Here is my list with the most useful apps for me at the moment, on rooted Android 1.6:
ADW Launcher (i like it much more than the stock SE one)
Advanced Task Killer Pro
Bluetooth File Transfer
Beautiful Widgets (for the home screen widget)
BeamReader (PDF reader)
Google Sky Map
Layar
Astro File Manager
Fast Dialer (a nice dialer with built in search for contacts, as OneDialer or Nubdial do not work on 1.6 devices)
IM+ (works well with Yahoo Messenger, since it's native client does not support the Donut)
Igo (works great and locks very fast)
I still use the stock Music player since it has everything i need
Rock Player (great for lots of movie formats)
System App Remover (I actually removed the Stock SE Homescreen from internal storage and some other apps i did not need. Be careful not to remove any sistem apps!)
Vignette (for a better camera experience, great effects. I alse liked Retro Camera and Fx Camera)
I use stock browser and gallery (both feel snappy and offer good user experience)
For the games, i play:
ExZeus (works great)
My Paper Plane 2
NFS Shift (plays smoothly)
Raging Thunder 2 (again very smooth)
The Wars (addictive game)
Parallel Kingdom (RPG using Google Maps)
ProjectINF
Angry Birds plays really well, but had some problems with the last version (freezez from time to time)
Linpack score: 2.8 MFLOPS
Quadrant Standard: 430-450
Overall the device does not lag even on Android 1.6 and I hope for the better once SE rolls out Android 2.1. (lazyyyyyy)
I am interested in what apps and games you find usefull and enjoy using, and what your experience is using this device.
great list!
i'm searching for a google rss reader app but i want it to be simple, with big fonts (or zoom option) and of course ad free

Suppose so, but my mind is on auto-ignore for ads... also, I have an Adblocker...
So Google Sky Maps works for you? I have issues with the compass when using any official Google-app. With all other apps like "GPS Status" or "OruxMaps" the compass is working fine, just not with any app by Google.
thanks a lot for ur list of games...
Try 3(cubed) music player Awesome UI (looks really cool,functional/great show off)
Replaced stock player for me
Dual file manager is better than other file manager. So easy and fast for copy or cut and paste.

Nuh uh, Root Explorer is better.

My favorite app on Android would have to be Tasker. The possibilities are endless!
Other handy apps are Smart Keyboard and Opera Mini.

Hi dude - thanks for your recommendations but I cant seem to find "fast dialer" on the market? can you point me in the right direction - Imn desperate for a decent dialer
What's wrong with the default dialer?
If you can't find it then it's probably not compatible with your phone.

1. Default dialer doesnt do speed dials (allocating numbers to contacts), nor does it have the smart dialling feature that most android phones have - this means that when on your dialpad you can type the names (or letters to the names) and the dialpad will display matching items. Once you ve used one of these its difficult to go back.
2. This thread states "current favourite apps for xperia x8" in the title which runs 1.6 as standard (at the mo) then states in the OP "on my rooted 1.6 android.
So thanks for comments but I still want to try the "fast dialer"
http://www.mobihand.com/product.asp?id=86769 find the dialer here. it is not free though but well worth it's price if you still have 1.6. Otherwise I would recommand OneDialer (I use it) or Nubdial.

I said that from experience, that's all. My Dad and I both have Xperias, I got a X8 whilst he has a X10 mini. Because of his smaller screen, he can't get all the apps I have, and so they don't appear in the market for him.
My list (on 2.1) :
Launcher pro+
APN On/Off (gprs switch widget)
Skype (works great on 2.1)
A Online Radio
Advanced Task Killer
Angry Birds (no problems at all)
Applanet (market replacement)
Csipsimple (sip client, works ok)
eQuotes (quote of the hour widget)
Fruit Ninja (game)
HyperJump (Great game!)
SpacePhysics (cool game)
SPB TV (liveTV)
U Connect (logics game)
Wifi Manager (wifi widget with network name + ip)
Winds of steel (nice game)
Audiowidget
What are the benefits of ADW launcher or Launcher Pro+ vs Sony Ericsson Launcher. How about speed? Will the phone "think" slower with ADW or Launcher Pro?
PAWserver
APNdroid (also have 3G Widget)
Meridian + Rockplayer
ASTRO File Manager
Unicode Map (for special char input)
to communicate with my servers:
andriodVNC
AndFTP
ConnectBot
for root:
Root Explorer
Titanium Backup
Terminal Emulator
any better choices are welcome.
I would really like to run Droid Wall or WellDroid (both are firewall GUIs),
but they need netfilters-kernelmod for IPtables. Eagerly looking for any help/info on that. Thx!
-Titanium backup
-Hanashi
-Hoccer
-Shangmail
-Dual file manager
-Quick office
-All call recorder
-animated weather

Good scrolling, nice skin, smooth animation.

Well..

put it in startup folder
pro:
- nice interface good scrolling e clear view
- nice the real clock with second even if it could be not so readable in day light (in the "action" menù it should be visible a digital clock or a more readable analogic clock)
con/desiderata:
- too many icon to scroll (all the apps and the settings) may be better if you can minimize the program and the setting list in vertical folders.
- nice interface it would be great if with a 2.0 release, dial, contact and messaging are integrated.
- with trinity and lasagna WM6 3.05 some problem with activesync, dunno if the same with other device/OS.
- does'nt display battery charging and sincronizing
- lack of usefull shortcut (music player, weather, or favorites call number)
- some problem with lanscaper/portrait switching
- no theme selection capabilities
- it could be great if you can choose from vertical or orizzontal kind of scrolling apps and setting (imo the orizzontal scrolling (like a book way) its quite bit more natural)
- check the sms/email/mms behaviour of the interface when system is Locked; When receive an sms or a mail the screen, should be locked even with the notify displayed if you want to interact you should unlock screen.
This is Quality Application! Makes my Touch look more like a mobile... kewl...
I agree with Dodba : this software needs a GUI messaging and calls.

This is a nice app I like the look of it. This is a trial version though a license cost 19.95.
Has anyone tried to Skin this?
I've located the skin files on the install directory, but had no success.
They are .bmp but I can't seem to open them or edit.
Nice app.
Is it skinnable? Any htc touch screen?
I think this is a great start and hopefully it continues to see updates because right now it works well, but a little more customization and organization would be nice. Having just every single program and setting link roped into one giant long page that takes 3 minutes to scroll down just isn't for me right now. I imagine if a version 2 is released that addresses the ability to organize it better i'd be all over that for 19.99
well.. skin masters!.... a htc touch skin for this??
The Time/Lock Screen must also show the next appointment. Then it would be perfect.

with you there!
Also a weather app would be nice!. not sure wether there is one or not but a slide to lock as well as unlock would be great! another thing that would be nice is a bounce back back to the top of the screen after a predefined time five seconds perhaps?
ouch! slows down horribly when running htc audio manager in the background! thats on my vario 2 with four programs in total running (including phone which it wont turn off!?) and with 8 meg of program memory spare and 11meg of storage mem on the phone.
Yes wecan skin it !
Just have to edit shell.bmp in photoshop (the other bmp file is for the about page) and save it in the same format. fushia color is for the transparency.
Only one default when changing backround to white to grey (for example) there is no icon transparency It's so ugly...
May attempt to have official skin or a pro
Its the same editing for Vito FunContact.
Some stuff are missing:
- What to do
- Calendar
- Weather
but it's a good start, keep working
Battery
I just LOVE this application...
BUT: it's a real battery-eater !
Cheers

I like it, but the lock feature isnt very usefull. When device is put to sleep with the powerbutton... screen is off

In my opinion we should split apps to several categories:
1. Apps
2. Widgets
3. Games
Here is mine list:
1. Apps
gtasks - simple note app that will sync with your gmail acc too
ASTRO File manager - as names says, in my opinion bast file explorer, it can unistall/kill apps too
FlashApp - allows you to use your HTC Desire as a flashlight, using your LED Camera
2. Widgets
BatteryLife - allows you too se temp/battery status on your homescreen
3. Games
Moto X Mayhem - nice motor racing game
Racing Thunder 2 - nice racing game
@benko, im not sure whether to keep it just for Desire specific apps though! anybody got any thoughts?

- GDocs - access your Google Documents on your device
- Gmote - control your computer with this remote
- Goggles - awesome software for finding information about anything - just take a picture of it!
- Google translate - ask no more
- gStrings - get tuned on the fly
- My Tracks - track your trips and share with your friends
- Navigon - great GPS navigation tool

Most of them are probably not Desire specific, but they are still great apps
I agree, I have most of them too! But this particular topic is designed to be Desire specific!

Need to be able to update status and be able to tweet. Also need to be able to comment and like on twitter. Good start though.
Facebook widget does work on HTC Desire 2.2 Launcher Pro. What does the "3" in front of the time mean? So "3, 11 09 at ... pm"..
Widget working on Launcher Pro is not correctly. Next version i'll fix it.
This is great. What a nice option for people who don't want to use launcher pro or sense. I would personally like to see the option to choose different colors or skins for the widgets.
I understand this is a work in progress, and I hope to see this mature into something amazing.
cheers!
I'm using the facebook widget and I just wanted to say that it's awsome.
This widget-pack deserves more attention!
Twitter widget doesn't work (all the others do).
HTC desire 2.2 using a HTC Desire HD port: tried several ROMs (Cyanogen, MIUI, Oxygen, DeFrost) and several launchers (ADW, Zeam, Go Launcher) so it's not a ROM or launcher problem... using latest version of course.
Edit: I can tweet, so login procedure seem to work! Widget doesn't fetch "only" tweets

not working for me
I'm running latest Evio from Kalkulin with ADW. Installed colorize widget but when I try to use it, just says "loading" forever and ever. Any ideas? Same thing when I try any of the widgets in the pack.

Hello guys,
as you might remember I posted a tutorial on how to remove Junk Apps for 2.3.4 firmwares.
A lot of people requested the same for 4.0.3 - so here it is guys
I decided to open a new topic to keep it clearly arranged for Android 2.3 and Android 4.0.
So let's get started:
How to delete the Junk Apps:
Go into "system/app" with Root Explorer, in that folder are all the Junk Apps. Now press "Mount R/W". Now you can delete the Junk Apps one by one or multi-select them. To have a backup of the apps, I'd suggest you to move them to the sd card. It's good to make a folder called "Junk Apps - name of the firmware" on your sd card.
Now select the apps, press move and go to the sd card and to the folder "Junk Apps - name of the firmware" and press paste. Done.
List of the Junk Apps for 4.1.A.0.562:
- adobereader.apk (Adobe Reader)
- antradioservice.apk (ANT Radio Service)
- chinesetextinput.apk (chinese keyboard)
- datatrafficswitch.apk (Data on/off widget)
- DigitalClockWidget.apk (digital clock widget)
- Home.apk (Sony launcher, only delete this when you have another launcher installed!!)
- JapaneseIME.apk (japanese keyboard)
- letsgolf_ay.apk (Let's Golf)
- livewaremanager.apk (Live Ware Manager)
- neoreader.apk (Neoreader)
- officesuite.apk (Office Suite)
- OmaDatasyncService.apk (part of Sony Sync)
- playnowclientarvato.apk (Play Now)
- POBoxSknPink.apk (skin for chinese keyboard)
- POBoxSknWood.apk (skin for chinese keyboard)
- Protips.apk (Android tips on homescreen)
- SemcCrashMonitor.apk (Crash Monitor)
- SEMCSetupWizard.apk (Setup Wizard)
- Stk.apk (SIM Tool Kit)
- storefront.apk (all the new stuff that has something to do with Fun&Downloads. Removes 3 items from the app drawer that belong to that game thing)
- Sync.apk (Sony Sync)
- Talk.apk (Google Talk)
- talkback.apk
- trackid.apk (Track ID)
- UpdateCenter.apk (Update Center)
- usersupport.apk (Support)
- WeatherWidget.apk (Weather widget)
- widgetanalogclock.apk (Clock widget)
- widgetcalendar.apk (Calendar widget)
- widgetdigitalclock.apk (digital clock widget)
- widgetonoff.apk (most on/off widgets)
- widgettimer.apk (timer widget)
- widgetworldclock.apk (world clock widget)
I've removed all these apps from my Xperia Arc and it's running fine and faster than before. Also you have more free RAM so your apps don't get killed as fast anymore when you minimized them.
This might also work on other Xperias when they are on the mentioned firmware, too. But I can't test that.
Thanks to:
doomed151 for posting a list of all stock apps in system/app for me
Do this at your own risk. I'm not responsible if you brick or damage your phone by doing this!
If this helped you, please press "Thanks"

Thank you for posting this Flo95, I removed some useless .apk files from my ROM.
Thanks button pressed.
Thanks that's what I needed!
I've also deleted an app called "Sakura" or something like this, I've seen somewhere that is related to the chinese keyboard but I'm not sure.
I've removed it and so far so good!
and yes, deleting this crap has helped my phone to be much much better in terms of performance!
I'm using Titanium Backup, would that be the same as the way with the Root Explorer?
I didn't have Sakura on my phone.
Yeah, Titanium Backup does the same.

Yes, but if want to you can flash the Power Statusbar Widget:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540084
It's more nice IMHO than a widget on the screen.
Tripov does have a point. It's a nice feature to have in your notification bar and on top you can customize the icons you need for whatever suits you. This eliminated the need for HD Widgets on my handset.
Very nice post!

Has all the apps in this list plus a few more.
Can install and remove these easily. I'll add more soon.

There are apks in /system/etc/product/applications, too.
You can delete those to free up system space.

I sideloaded HTC Gallery and Google Camera (because neither appear in the Play Store on my device). Gallery works great (and also installs Photo Editor) and Google Camera, unlike HTC Camera, still has photosphere, which works with Google Cardboard, as opposed to HTC Camera's only 360 degree "flat" panorama.
Kind of annoyed because they said we could download Gallery from the Play Store. Would be especially annoyed if I was a mainstream user and couldn't sideload it.
And what were they thinking with TouchPal? I just want the normal Sense keyboard back I will say though, I downloaded the light Android L theme and it is loads better than what they give you stock.

Also sideloaded the HTC gallery and everything works except when you go to try and save the photo in Photo Editor after editing it, it says SAVE FILE FAIL.
You have the save problem?
If you have HTC gallery, take a photo then look at it. Can you delete it or switch to the next picture?

No.
@B-Man2005
Its possible to install (http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/htc-co...music-widget-7-0-474487-android-apk-download/) but the widget does not update.

Yes, same thing happens, but that doesn't matter because I usually edit photos with Aviary, not the bare-bones "stock" editor with Gallery.

You are Sure you can delete the picture and swipe to the next when open the gallery from the camera app?
I only got a screen with the image and a "Details" button.
@mdxdave, definitely. Just did it several times without any hitches. It's possible that we're not using the same Gallery app's. Mine is 9.22.668813.
Mhm it's the same version on my phone.. [emoji52]
Did you deactivate Google App before you installed HTC Gallery?
You said sideload.... via adb?
I just installed the apk. So it's not a system App.
I've installed the Google Dialer, but when making a call it always opens up the HTC dialer and calls from there. Any trick to get it to use the Google dialer?

I tried those on S4 Mini (CM12/12.1/13) and they work fine, but those are Sense 7 app.
If you want Sense 8 themed apps download ICE for M8, use ZArhiver or something to open it, and extract all the apps you need. (They cant be installed on 5.1.1 on my M9, parse error, so i cant tell if they work or not)
