[Q] Music organization with Android? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Not a big compliant, but just wondering if this is fixable. I noticed that upon installation of Android some sound mp3s show up on the Music library. It really clutters up the Music library so I was wondering if there is any way to make it so the music library doesn't detect these specific sound folders/files that way they aren't detected and shown in the library. Anyone have any ideas?

do a search for ".nomedia" and you'll find the solution. easier than retyping the whole thing for you.

BTW is there a trick so that Windows Mobile also doesn't detect these files?

btw I can't really get this to work. I create a txt file named .nomedia on my PC to transfer onto my card. If I try to create this file on my device it says it can't because of the file name. Also, the "." in front of the folder name doesn't really do anything either.

Works perfectly fine for me, I have the blank .nomedia file in each folder I want my media player to ignore and I get none of the android mp3s in my music playlists. Remember Android creates a cache (basically a copy) of all it's notification mp3's in a folder called cache as well.

The problem I have with this is after adding the .nomedia you can no longer select them as ringtones/notifications either.
Anyone else get this?

its called "media hidden" , in the appstore , it'll do it all for ya

Did you create a text file? or does it have to be a specific type of file?

WMA as ringtone!

Last night i sent a song (wma file) via infa-red from my friends laptop my my xda ii, i cannot set this as a ringtone, can anyone help!
ive tryed add new ringtone and the file does not appear on the list, ive searched for the song but the only way i can find the file is if i go to windows media player and go to playlist (im not sure where the actual file is kept), but there is no option to set as a ringtone.
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
have you tryied to copy it in the windows/ring directory ? i guess it must be in there to be considered as a ringtone.
How do i do that as i cannot find where the file is kept?
How do i do that as i cannot find where the file is kept?
then do a search on the name of your file
your xda is like a pc in that way
you cant just place files where you like and asume
that every program search the whole mem looking for all files of formats it knows
well if you have a soft like resco explorer you can make a "find" on the device to look for wma files, i do not know exactly where IR files are stored, look in the temp directories or my documents ...
Ive done a search for the song name but no items found the only way i can find the song is by going into windows media player and going on to playlist! Does anyone know where files are copied to when recieved via infa-red, maybe that will help?
my bet is that they are put somewhere in the my documents dir
if you go into the playlist of mediaplayer
and click the I icon
you get the info of a song / media file
then scroll down a bit and it display the path to the file
It cannot be found, if anyone knows where songs are kept when sent over via infa-red please let me know!
Thanks!
Rudegar ive done that and it says location /My Documents but when i go to my documents theres nothing there (sorry bout previous msg, sent before i got yours)

i just did a test trying to use the find in the start button to find a file and it dident work
then i tried using total commander to search for the file and it found it all 3 places i had the file
i would if you dont feel like browsing after the file using file explore

Hidden File?
Hi,
without checking, it just popped in my mind.
Maybe your file is hidden.
Have you tried the 'show all files' option (thats if you use the standard file explorer).
In case you don't know how to activate, just tap and hold inside the directory and select 'show all files'
Hope this helps....

The XDA2 uses WAV files for ringtones. i got a free file converter off the net and turned wma's into wav's. I use the cradle to transfer the file directly into the windows/ring folder and it always works, neva used the beem function as its not great. Good luck wit the problem

Nope, it can use EITHER WMA or WAV formats. I use a WMA file personally, and my phone came with some WMA ringtones pre-installed
Well, i can only say from experience what has worked. If the problem was with WMA then possibly try WAV but again its your own choice.

Windows Media player

I love the audio plug in on m phone except for some reason, Windows Media player doesn't see my Storage Card anymore.
I say anymore because at one time it did. But I removed the storage card to put more songs on it and now it doesn't see it anymore. I wish I can manually point to it but I can't.
When I hit Library Update, it seems to see the audio files but doesn't add it to the library. I can Open the folder where the files are and can play the files so I know the songs aren't corrupted.
Very strange problem. Has anyone encountered this?
Thanks alot,

Backing Up Playlist

As I mentioned in my other thread, I'm playing with different ROMs at the moment. I use the built in TF3D music player and I am wondering if there is a way to backup playlists so when I change roms, I don't have to keep making my playlists?
Thanks.

I use SPB Backup and it automatically backs up my playlist for me. Saves me loads of time as I flash bascially everyday
As this is still an issue, I'm bumping it.
I had a look at SPB Backup, but I didn't like the look of it, I couldn't see how to just backup the playlist?
Surely when you make a playlist it is stored somewhere? I see application data/HTC/AudioManager_Eng there is a playlist folder, but it remains empty...

I think if you have playlists created with .asx files using WMP for some reason the HTC Audio manager will use these instead of it's own .txt file playlists. Not sure of a way round this without further dabbling Maybe you can just add .asx to the .txt playlists (if you have them) and use it that way, then back those up? Manual back up I mean to storage card from device wich is the only back up I ever use.
No, I don't even have the txt version I don't think. If someone can post just a clip of one please, I can probably edit it to suit me

Here is an example of one of mine which you can open in a text editor. My usual ritual after flashing is to copy my playlist folder to the Application data/HTC/Audio manager folder. However, since I have been using Media Player with WM6.5 I notice that HTC Audio Manager chooses those .asx playlists instead. You could also create a one song playlist with HTC Audio Manager, locate and open the file and use that as a template in a text editor maybe.
Ok, so I made my own with 4 tracks in it. I tried with no file extension, with .asx and with .txt and none work. Strangly, I see a playlist called 'Playlist' in HTC Audio manager, but when I go into it's empty. I add some tracks, they don't appear in the file when I bring it back off the device, it still has the 4 I put in myself.
Any ideas?

My own experience is that HTC have chosen not to make this easy. Sometimes I have copied the playlists into the Application Data Folder and I haven't been able to use them for sometimes more than a day. I think soft resetting and pulling the storage card in and out a lot helps. It's not quick and simple. Might be something else though.

Hide media from media scanner

Hi all,
is there a way to hide certain media (in this case: videos) from the media scanner so they do not show up in the media list?
I do not want my wife to know what kind of p.0n I'm wathing on my phone
To be precise: Nothin' illegal, just the usual stuff, but she's almost fundamentally catholic
Just make a file called ".nomedia" and put it in that folder
From my Galaxy S loonie-phone
I would be quite interested in this too..
And how do I re-run the media scan?

Or connect USB and mount the drives, then dissconnect, scanner will run automatically
reboot phone, kill two birds with one stone, mostly reply in case this helps a future viewer.
Put said videos in a folder starting with . for example...
/sdcard/media/.secret/stuff/
The content in .secret will not be visible in any normal file explorer or file chooser, appear in galleries or media scanners. You will have to use a file explorer that has a "show hidden files" option to see these.
Optionally you may use .nomedia to hide these in a general sense. However not all third party software will honour these tags.

LOL I like that you don't want her to know what kind of "p.0n" you are watching... presumably that means there are some kinds she would approve of, but they aren't the kind you have on your phone

LOL, ack! She's into the "normal" stuff that we watch together, but I also like... well, that doesn't belong here, but anyway I'd like to explicitly state it's nothing illegal...
You could also use "Vaulty Free" app that moves selected images and videos into a virtual vault which then requires a password to open and view. This also ensures that they do not show up in gallery and video player.
Hope this helps.
Look at my signature.
Put all your secret files in /sdcard/.secret/Secret Stuff.jpg
Then use my app to start the media scanner when you need to scan.
Look at the link in my signature.
so how would this work if you wanted to hide media in game directories? its quite irritating to have the media player list the thousand small wav and mp3 files that are part of games i have on my SD, and renaming the dir to one with a dot in the front will break the path to it.
any suggestions?

Agreed....
I have several .nomedia files in different folder Apps that contain graphics.
Stops them showing up in the Gallery App.
Using a .nomedia file works fine for video game folders but if you add one to a music folder to hide the album art thumbnails from the gallery then this also hides the music files from the music player !

I think you can get around this by embedding the folder art into the music files themselves - I had to do this to my entire collection as my car player would only see them in the MP3s and not as separate files

That's exactly what I do. Mp3tag is a good, free program for doing this.

Try changing the album image's name to albumart.jpg (or watherver file type it is). It is no loger shown in the gallery. Only problem is you can only have 1 image per folder. I have not tried with variantas such as albumart_1 and so on, but it may work...
Thanks, .nomedia worked fine for me, but I think there really should be an option in the OS to either leave the scanner on auto (so it could scan all the phone's storage), or to manually select the folders that contain my media files.

EDIT: I opened-up a ticket here (I took the liberty to include some other ideas I found in this thread).

How can I hide files from v20 music library?

SOLVED.* Hi, all. I usually have a ton of audiobooks, seminars, etc on my sd card and I listen to them via a separate and dedicated audiobook app.
It'd be so great to start my new phone with more ease/less clutter: I'm really tired of slogging through hundreds of spoken word files when I open my music player to choose music.
Any way/any player that will let me hide tracks selectively so that only my music shows up?
Thanks in advance!
* EASY SOLUTION
Put everyday music like in separate folder. Alsoake sure player only uses that folder. For other files you need to pit a .nomedia in folder so players ignore that.

Thank you -- I'd never heard of the .nomedia concept before!

Thank you -- I'd never heard of the .nomedia concept before! Could you help out with one further thing possibly? I dunno how to make one or where to get one. Feeling kinda dumb, but if you could direct me one last time, I'd be quite grateful.
I always keep separate folders, so that's done. SD card has a folder for audiobooks, and SmartAudiobooks already knows that's the root folder for those.
I also have a music folder on the sd card, and, ideally, that'd be the only folder I want a music player to look for music.
When you mentioned the .nomedia file, I looked it up and saw that google play offered some for this purpose -- but reviews all complained that those apps were useless as the sd card was not searched. So I searched on how to make one or find one elsewhere and I guess my search skills are missing something.

You can also place a period in front of folder name to game similar result
A .nomedia file is just a blank text file but has the filename of ".nomedia", any text editor can create a new file but make sure you save it with the .nomedia filename.

*SOLUTION Much heartfelt thanks to repliers!
The easiest way to do this is to download a handy app called ES File Explorer from the play store, install it, then open and go to the folder whose media you wish to hide. Once there, click the upper right dotted menu, choose new, then file, then rename the file .nomedia. At this point you are asked to rechoose the folder you wish to hide. Choose it, and you're done! SmartAudiobooks still recognizes all my audiobooks but the music app blissfully ignores them.
What's best is that ES File Explorer makes the .nomedia file work on the SD folders ... after learning about .nomedia from the helpful folks on this thread, I made the file using my desktop but I could NOT get the music player to ignore it, and had a hard time making the PC allow me to name it with nothing before the dot.
The ESFE solution was a painless breeze, and I am now a happy listener
Thanks for teaching me something wonderful, you guys!
