Hi, I dropped my G1 and the screen now only displays white and colors when turned on.

I was hoping for a way to get back information such as stored notes, shazam tags, and contacts!
I am able to access the phone and get a shell with ADB.
How can I emulate the phone and still have access to everything inside as before?
Or better yet, a good method to fix it.
I don't want to buy an LCD and then find out that theres still issues.
Thanks a bunch.
It's possibly just a dislodged ribbon connector.. grab the service manual:
http://mikechannon.net/PDF Manuals/HTC Dream SM (A04).pdf
You should be able to open it up and reconnect it pretty easily if that's the case.
Until then, you could use screencast to recover whatever you need from the phone:

My phone seems to be working fine, but it is hard to tell since the screen usually won't turn on. I say usually because once or twice a day I can wake the phone up and the screen will work, but as soon as the screen turns off again it usually won't come back on.
I am wondering if I wipe the phone back to stock if that might make it work like normal again, but my question to you is, Can I restore the phone to its original state without using the screen? Every time I try to boot to recovery or bootloader the screen stops working and I am stuck. Can I use ADB to do everything? If so, I need to know the commands to type in.
Is your ribbon cable loose?

It doesn't appear to be. Is there a good way to check?
Same problem I had. Sent it back to HTC and they fixed it free

I followed a PDF a member called strawmetal made, didn't need the screen, returned it to stock and sent it in

My phone also has a problem that sometimes appears.
Sometimes, the screen won't turn on at all. I would use the phone normally and lock the screen. Then, all of the sudden, when I pick it up again it wouldn't turn on at all, it's like it shut down.. After pressing the POWER button, it reboots and then works.
I am still thinking this is a software glitch rather than a hardware problem. The screen came on the first try this morning and I went into Our Groceries to add something. When I backed out of it the screen turned off, and hasn't come on since. Also, last night it was also working and I went into settings to lower the screen brightness. No matter what I set it to it stayed the same, and the Auto setting was unchecked. I think I need to just reflash the rom but I don't know how to do that without the screen being on.
Some phones have problems handling low voltages in sleep mode if you have underclocked it. On one of my g2's i had to 384mhz or something like that for the screen to turn on.
I think it was the underclocking, not shure. But something with the screen voltage

If all else fails, flash it to a stock rom. Try to make sure all the overclocking features are turned off. Try finding a rom that's just a clean and rooted stock rom. Do that first, then if that doesn't work then flash to stock.
Remember overclocking isn't for every chip on every phone. Not all chips are made equal, and some can be amazing at overclocking or under volting and some not at all.
That is what I am wanting to do, but how do I do that without being able to see the screen? Every time I boot into recovery, or even bootloader, I have no screen to see what I am doing.

If you can't see the screen even in recovery then it must be hardware. You might have damaged the flex cable to the LCD+digitizer. You can try to flash it to stock with HTC's tools. I remember doing it to my phone without needing to touch it at all. So long as the phone is on and charged, you should be able to do it. Just do a quick search on the forums, but make sure not to flash a rom that you can't root.
You can get it on Ebay for $26. They sell them with tools for a bit more if you don't have the tools.

Wow. So the cable is actually user replaceable? I guess I need a YouTube video or something to show how it's done. Of course, my screen works SOME of the time, so I don't know if I have the guts to perform this type of surgery without a viable backup plan if something goes wrong. This looks like something I would try after I have a suitable replacement phone already. Still, I find it impressive that this part is so easy to find! Thanks for the links!
If you decide to replace the ribbon, go ahead and replace the hinge spring as well, worked wonders for my G2.
i replaced the screen ribbon and the spring at the same time.
it wasn't too hard. takes about 15 - 20 minutes to do it the first time.
you can buy the entire ribbon assembly for pretty cheap. just be VERY careful with the USB/SD card ribbons on the side of the main board. one is a clip, the other is a pull tab. if u dont know which one is which- the phone will not have SD card capability when you break them :-(

This is the dirty secret of smart phones, in that nearly everything is replaceable, and usually for cheap.
Damaged the phone physically = housing = $60
damaged screen = lcd + digitizer = $50
Even the speakers are like $3, and I know cause I had to replace mine. The only thing that'll make you want to throw the phone away is if the main board or logic board is damaged. Even then you could probably find a broken phone that at least has a working board for cheap. I actually bought a $15 broken G2 that I plan to repair and give it to my sister as a gift. I have enough spare parts to make it work.
As for changing it, there's plenty of guides on how to replace the digitizer on YouTube. You have to replace the cable to get to the lcd+digitizer, so just follow the video up to that point.

I have an issue with my screen. It is blank or grey or white lines. The phone works, just cant see the screen.
Anyone know why? Does anyone have a link to disasemble the G2?

I just wanted to say Thank You to everyone who helped me on this. I bought the ribbon, watched the YouTube video, and now I have a working phone again! $25 sure beats $350 for a new phone, and it was more fun , too.
Now my screen has trouble displaying colors with gradients. It looks like it isn't showing all the colors, so there is a weird muddy area between the dark and lighter portions, sort of like playing an old Sierra computer game from the 80's. Did it revert to only showing 65k colors instead of millions? Still, not a deal breaker in any way. The phone works and i couldn't be happier!
Hey guys,
So I've been loving the crap out of my nexus 4... that is, until a random stranger on a crowded subway knocked it out of my hands as I was taking it out of my pocket. So the front of the screen is messed up pretty bad glass-wise; the lcd works fine but the digitizer is messed up so I can't use the touchscreen at all.
I'm going to have to shell out on a new screen soon, but I'd like a workaround in the meantime. I figured if I could get a bluetooth mouse connected I could at least navigate around my phone, but of course I need to use the touchscreen to pair with the mouse. Or maybe not, that's why I'm posting.
Can it be done? Through adb or some other means, could I pair a bluetooth mouse without using the phone directly? The only method I could think of might be to pull the bluetooth address config file and insert the MAC address of the mouse into it to potentially trick the phone into thinking it had already paired with it. Does that make sense? Even if it does, I'm most likely going to need some guidance in figuring out how to actually pull it off.
Let me know if it can be done somehow, and thanks! :fingers-crossed:
should have knock the guy out and drop his phone...sound like a fair deal...eye for an eye

Ha ha maybe I would've, but the station was so busy that I couldn't tell who bumped into me... It was on an inclined walkway so the phone actually slid away from me by a few feet, by the time I got it whoever did it was long gone

Use the play store webside to load a remote desktop app on it so you can take over it's screen (assuming those apps exist and it's not stuck at the PIN entry screen)
I haven't found any screen sharing/control apps that don't require me to use the phone to generate a code/url, but I'll keep looking
well I figured it out... for future reference you can use the input keyevent lines to navigate around the phone. It's a bit tedious but it's only until I connect it to a bluetooth mouse
Hello peeps,
I had just recently got this phone, its been 2 months exact and yesterday this happened. It was upside down when it rolled over it (was on the road), I was surprised to know that its back merely seems damaged (see pictures to have better idea).
- Speaker seems to be working fine. (SIM working in it!)
- LED indicator is blinking too and working as it should.
- It turns on/off without any problem.
- The power and volume buttons are also working fine.
I had lock screen passcode on so can't access the data, but it connects to computer fine. I wonder if replacing the display and screen digitizer will be the only things I need to make it work.
PS : I had no screen protector/back case or anything on it.
EDIT 1 : Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones.
EDIT 2: Data accessed!!

Don't think a tempered glass would've saved his phone from a truck lol. I'm impressed by how little damage it took actually
Please keep us informed if you find any damage other than the screen and back.
Wow sorry about that but also glad to see how it was able to withstand a beating like that :banghead:
Make a youtube video. It might go viral if you can show it still works ie: sound phone call. You might make enough money to buy a new phone.

If you had usb debugging enabled, you can completely remove the lockscreen and access your data. There is a reddit post detailing how to do it step by step. Please Google because I don't have a bookmark. I did this to my Z3 when i got damaged. If you didn't have USB debugging enabled, you'll have to find some hack to do that before attempting.
Also replacing the screen and maybe the digitizer (if damaged) should get your phone back up and running.

Hey if USB debugging was not enabled, you might have to find a way to do it. And I did try doing some Google search but couldn't come across anything! Really sorry but the thread was on Reddit and you should probably search for it there. I'm not sure of the exact keywords I used!
Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones. I can try entering the pattern now, but I don't remember if I had to like swipe after pressing the power button or double tapping the screen or it was just the code straight away after pressing the power button or tapping the screen, could someone please help me with the two options as how they work and also just send screenshot of the lock screen with pass code on so I have the idea about it and all?
EDIT : @thedisturbedone : I managed to pull the lock away as touch screen is working haha!
Is there anyway possible that I can use it via PC? Asus PC link requires the app running in background. Also anyway possible to backup the contacts now?

Hey there, thanks for sharing...been away on Thanksgiving. You want to save your data? Hmm...good question. Here's what I would try to do:
- Contacts should be backed up in Google - so no worries there...you can access via. http://contacts.google.com I think
- Connect the phone to PC, Install ASUS PC Link. You should have the app running on the phone.
- I would then try to drag all the files you need to your computer,
- Or the other thing you can do is if the information is crucial....And I don't promote doing this, and this is not an official ASUS fix...because you will void your warranty..sooo anything issue that happens is on you and ASUS will not help you if something goes wrong...is to root your device, install Titanium Backup, and use that to save all your data (apps and everything) into Google Drive, or Dropbox. Then, you can restore that data back to your phone when it's fixed.
What about micro USB to HDMI and then follow on the big screen what you're doing?
@ASUS_Khang : I wanted to have your attention for the giveaway thing as my story is all posted here. Thanks for the input anyway.

I have recovered the data from the phone itself, the remaining things are notes/contacts which I can't do via connecting the phone to PC now and I had backed up contacts already so no worries.
Haven't read the whole thread, not sure what your plans are, but thought I'd share a recent experience.
My wife knocked her phone off a table at a restaurant a few weeks ago. Landed on the corner when it hit the tile floor. Screen shattered. Was still usable, but bits of glass were flaking off.
I ordered her a new screen & digitizer from amazon. Took about 3 weeks to show up. I replaced it using a plastic spudger tool I had from an old iPhone screen replacement kit, and some patience. The screen replacement kit I ordered came with some double sided tape to reseal everything. Took about 90 minutes to complete as I was taking my time. The replacement went flawlessly and you can't even tell her screen has been replaced. I'd recommend trying that before replacing the phone, unless you want to.

Theirs probably little to no support for my phone here anymore but my screen is acting up in a way that makes the phone nearly useless, if for example I tap on an app to open it, the phone will think my finger is still there and act as a long press to move the app to another location when I just press and release to open the app, typing is a nightmare, If I type something then need to backspace itll hold the backspace and delete everything I type, I'm really hoping it's not the digitizer and hopefully it's just a software issue that I can fix by rooting and running lineage or something on it. I am not using a screen protector and the screen is not cracked or chipped, this is how the phone was when I got it and I would much rather use the v20 than my A10e, I really hate my a10e lmao. Any help would be greatly appreciated! PS: Ive already tried a full reset and that did not fix the issue, thanks!

Sounds like a hardware issue

Are you using a case?
Is your usb port dirty?
Hidden water damage?
Is the battery swollen (bulged)? Try using it without the back cover on.
Try running in safe mode to see if any user app is interfering.
Those are my only thoughts besides a hardware issue as mentioned above.
