ROM Manager/ClockworkMod Recovery issues. - Fascinate General

Hi,
I have just rooted my Samsung Fascinate via the z4root one-click application and have the "Superuser" icon in my drawer.
I then downloaded ROM Manager (free), clicked "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" (Galaxy S Fascinate) three times and then clicked "Reboot into Recovery".
The phone reboots, but when it gets to the "Android System Recovery (2e)" screen, I get the following message:
--Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Since then, I have cleared download cache and re-flashed and also uninstalled/reinstalled the ROM Manager application with the same results.
I then found the guide on XDA posted by "Fallingup"
I followed the Mac guide. Downloaded the file in thread, opened up the "readme.txt. Plugged in my phone, selected the "USB connected" in the drop down window and pressed "Mount". From there I copied the "Zimage" file to my SD card as instructed in the text.
Doubled clicked the Zimage file in the SDCard and was prompted with the following:
Last login: Wed Nov 17 22:03:46 on ttys000
/Volumes/SDCARD/zImage ; exit;
Taylor-Hodgkins-MacBook-Pro:~ thodgki1$ /Volumes/SDCARD/zImage ; exit;
-bash: /Volumes/SDCARD/zImage: cannot execute binary file
logout
[Process completed]
I was unable to enter the codes that followed in the Readme.txt.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds to me like you didn't install CWM Recovery correctly. Here's a link on how to install it correctly using Odin.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/35726-clockworkmod-recovery.html
Follow everything namebrandon says in his first post and you should have CWM Recovery. Hope this helps.

This is the Windows installation. I have a Mac and this followed that guide as mentioned in my OP.

Ahh i'm sorry, i can't help with mac issues. I just saw the error message and then skimmed the rest, figured that Odin and CWM recovery worked the same way on both macs and pc's. Hope someone who uses a mac can help you resolve this issue or you can find a way to solve yourself.

This belongs in General. Good luck getting that figured out, though.

I'm in the same boat man. Instructions for Mac tend to be less tedious than windows so I'm surprised there hasn't been any. The ones that do exist aren't solid.

Now if you guys would search the forums you would see that my original guide for installing clockwork mod has instructions for both windows and *nix / mac
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788099
And this should be in Fascinate General. Dont post these questions in development

Please do not assume that we didn't search the forums--if you have read my OP then you would see that I have tried Mac guide that you posted and I get an error doing so. Please see my OP for a better description of my problem.
Apologies for posting in the wrong section, I just posted in the section where I found the guide.

You have to use adb shell via the terminal to push and install the files on your phone. Follow the instructions in the readme.txt file and it will you.
You don't double click on the file.

Hi I performed the procedure describer in forum.androidcentral.com with Odin, but it stopped and said Compete(Write)operation failed, the phone did'nt reboot. I repeated the procedure and Odin said All threads completed, but the phone is not working anymore!!!! A phone icon and a computer icon appeared; I had to unplug the battery to shut down the phone. Now when I try to turn on the device only a Sansung screen appear and the device doesn't boot anymore!!!!
Please Help me!!!! Any solutions?
Another info: A few days ago I installed the Recovery mode 3e as described [FIX] Release: 3-button combo fix for any firmware version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201, but now it runs the recovery mode 2e.
Should I try to repeate the "3-button combo fix" installation? Or flash the entire ROM? With what?

Noob trying to learn how to flash roms

Ok guys, not sure if this should be in General or in here...
I am very new to Android but I'm loving it so far. I have my Epic rooted and I have the clockworkmod installed. I have download Tha Boss Rom V.02 to try out as my first ROM.
I just a few questions?
I have the ROM on my sd card and I renamed to update.zip(not sure if I needed to do that)... I then open up clockwork and hit update ROM from SD Card, point it at the update.zip.
It reboot and goes into the Android system recovery screen and starts to install the package. It gets to Verifying update package and stops and say:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
What am I doing wrong. Do I just have a bad file and maybe redownload it? I think I may try Andromeda Galaxy v1.0.3 next just to see if it's a file issue...
Thanks if you took the time to read this.

Boot ypur phnoe into clockwork recovery (vol. down + camera + power) then select "install zip from SDcard". then "choose zip from SDcard" then select the update.zip file.

it seems like you guys dont have clockmod installed correctly. are you guys doing the one click method for root and clockmod? do any rooted apps work? dl rom manager from the market. use that to install the newest clockmod recovery. make sure you selet the samsung epic. use rom manger to boot into recovery? it should be green not blue
I was having a similar problem booting to cwm from rom manager. Rooted with one click 2.2.4 then one click clockwork final then installed rom manager. RM would not boot into cwm. Dled and flashed cwm from inside RM and still didn't work. I could get to it via the 3 button method. Next I flashed Mixup kernel and still had the same issue. Went back into RM and clicked DL Clockwork again and it instantly says its successful and now I can boot into cwm from RM.
Could somebody please make (or HAS somebody made) a guide that addresses the following two scenarios? I think it would go a LONG way towards encouraging others to experiment with the ROMs that are available now
1. My phone's rooted. I want to experiment and try out the available ROMs... but first, I want my phone backed up verbatim, so I can put everything back the way it was if things don't work out. What do I need to do?
2. I had fun trying out other ROMs, but for now I just want to put everything back the way it was before I started. I followed the instructions for #1. What do I need to do NOW?
Ok all this what I found was my problem. I believe it was Windows 7 64 bit. I tried to get clockworkmod running on my work machine that is windows 7 32bit and it worked like a champ. I actually decided to start from scratch and unrooted my phone, reapplied the DI07 update then rooted again, did the clockworkmod first try... then I did the last try.bat and rebooted and that seemed to work. I am doing a ROM back as I type this.
There is a good thread on it in the Epic Android Development forum called:
[TUTORIAL] Updating to DI07, Obtaining Root, and Flashing Custom Recovery [FIX]
I'd post a link, but I am a new user... and so no links in post
Hope this helps everyone.
Can someone post a link? I did use search, turned up a million (yes, I am exaggerating) threads but can't find this one.
Thanks.

I rooted. Where do I go from here? ROM Manager problems

Okay, so I got my Fascinate yesterday, and rooted last night... It went perfectly. No hiccups other than driver installation for the phone... but I fixed it. So now I have Titanium Backup, Rom Manager.. For some reason the Market won't let me download Root Explorer or SetCPU or TiBu donate.. So that's on hold for now I guess.. But I read the steps in HOW TO:Root, Install Clockwork, Remove Bloatware, Integrate Google, Un-root, and more which has a link to Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix but I can't find Odin anywhere? I've been looking and the link in that second post is broken for both Odin and Clockwork mod. Now, I believe I DID finally get Clockwork through ROM Manager... But still no Odin.. And when I select "back up current ROM" on ROM Manager it says:
Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
And then I have some blue text toward the top that says
Android system recovery <2e>
Samsung recovery utils
- for BML -
(the following is selectable)
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
I don't believe I have an update.zip on my sdcard..
Sooo, what gives: How do I backup with ROM Manager? I think I have already backed up my apps and stuff with Titanium Backup.. But I'm still curious as to what is going on.. And How do I get Odin? Is there like a central place I can find all of this info on Odin, flashing, recovery, kernels, etc? I think I've picked most of this stuff up fairly quickly.. But now I'm at a wall. How do I proceed?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: D'oh I just noticed I posted this in the development section and not general. I apologize. If a mod could please move it?
Ok, I know where you are, you have to flash clockwork mod through odin. Then you have to select "flash clockworkmod recovery" in rom manager. To get odin, have you googled it? Im on my fascinate right now so I cant post it from my pc. Also, the wonderful people on IRC #samsung-fascinate could probably have it up in like 2sec. You'll be good to go once you odin and flash clockworkmod. Good luck

Thanks for the quick reply.. I have googled it, and most of the links I found were either broken, seemed outdated, or didn't seem to be the steps for the Fascinate, so I've been kind of scared to get them... I haven't noticed an official site for Odin. Is there one? Also, do I need Samsung Kies? What is it?

[Q] Shot self in foot, edited build.prop now N7 won't boot

I was testing tablet UI mode by editing the /system/build.prop file. The N7 went into Tablet UI mode OK but I didn't like it so I reedited the /system/build.prop file to undo my edits, and now the N7 doesn't boot properly. It goes to a black screen and just sit there.
I can boot into recovery and I can get adb to work. I used the pull command to get a copy of the build.prop file and it seems OK but I'm not 100% sure if I made any other edits by mistake. Of course like a fool I didn't make a backup of the original.
Can anyone make some suggestions on how to fix my N7?
Thanks.

reflash your ROM. it'll replace your build.prop with a good copy. don't wipe a thing, just reflash.
I'm rooted but on stock. Can I just download a copy of the stock rom and flash that with CWM?

rooted stock ROM yea. I've also flashed a pure aosp ROM over stock without any reprocussions.
Before I go ahead and reflash I just want to make sure I'm getting it right. I've downloaded the stock rom, extracted image-nakasi-jro03d.zip. I should push this file to my internal storage, then use CWM to flash? Or should I just find a pure aosp ROM and flash that?
Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to make things worse.

I don't know what you picked up, but here's a stock/rooted ROM that you can flash in your cwm recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776330
Aosp works too, its your choice
if you know how to use adb you can just boot to recovery and push the stock build.prop to your tab
I downloaded a stock copy of the stock build.prop, used the adb push command to push it into /system rebooted and nothing. Still hangs on black screen upon boot.
I then downloaded the stock ROM which simms22 kindly pointed me to, used the adb push command to copy the zip file into /data/media/Firmware, used CWM v6.0.1.0 to "install zip file from sdcard" and I got an error, here is the output:
Installing:/sdcard/Firmware/Nexus7 - JRo03d-Odexed-ROOT_4.1.1_signed.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update package...
E:Error in /sdcard/Firmware/Nexus7 - JRo03d-Odexed-ROOT_4.1.1_signed.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
I tried both the Odexed and Deodexed files, both gave same results.
Am I missing a step in the process?
It's working now!
I was afraid I was messing up some of the adb commands so I downloaded the Nexus 7 Toolkit 2.0 (Great tool for someone like me)
- via Toolkit re-transferred the odexed and deodexed ROM files, reflashed, same errors as above
- via Toolkit re-installed CWM Recovery 6.0.1.0, reflashed, same errors as above
- via ADB Shell used CHMOD to modify file rights of the ROM files (stab in the dark), same errors as above
- downloaded stock image from CWM site (JRO03D_grouper.zip), pushed via tool kit, flashed via CWM....WORKED!!!
Everything is as it was before, no need for a full wipe! I'm going to do a backup right now!
Not sure why the other ROMS would not flash, but at this point I'm not going to mess around to try to figure it out.
Many thanks to simms22 and PhxkinMassacre for getting me pointed in the right direction.
prly a bad download.
after pushing the file you need to set the correct mode:
Code:
adb shell chmod 644 /system/build.prop
Me too - also hosed my own build.prop

Ok, I did the exact same thing and followed these instructions but haven't had any luck.
First, thanks lbloo and the folks who have responded for all the info here. I have downloaded JRO03D_grouper.zip and I am grateful for the tip to the toolkit.
When I have pushed JRO03D_grouper.zip to the N7, it appears to have worked, but I can't find it on the sdcard. I am pushing from the default location to /sdcard/. I then select "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard" but the only zip there is supersu (from Day 1).
For reference, this is CWM Recovery v 6.0.0.6.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
Jack
Looking back I don't recall resetting the file rights after modifying the file and that was likely the root cause of my problems.
You should try the chmod command a couple of posts back.

Yes. And, to further test, I created a little zip file called test.zip and pushed it to the tablet. I can see it just fine. It's just the grouper zip that I can't find.
Thanks
Jack
I just noticed a diff in filesize between the JRO03D_grouper.zip file I am using and one shown in a Youtube video entitled "how to put a rom to flash on a semi-bricked nexus 7 with recovery" by Youtube user metroid031993. (I'm too green to post outside links on XDA)
Mine is 261814702 bytes, the one shown in the video is 32650144 bytes.
Perhaps this is my problem, an invalid zip file. What do you think? And, can someone please tell me the correct size of JRO03D_grouper.zip?
Thanks
Jack

Well, I got the grouper zip into /sdcard/ and was able to upgrade without losing anything. w00t!
Theory:
I was in the same adb "session" this time since I was using adb from the command line. Meaning, the daemon was still running from the first push I did. So, while I couldn't see the grouper zip after the first push (consistent with your experience, dark_samus), I could see it and upgrade with it after second push (also consistent). And, perhaps my previous attempts didn't work before because I was closing and opening the Nexus 7 Toolkit each time, therefore stopping and restarting the daemon, which meant that each push attempt was the first attempt for that "session."
I don't have any solid technical basis to support or refute that theory, it's just one possible theory that, if true, would result in the experience I had.
My problem is resolved. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this, I truly appreciate your help!

Either replace the complete system partition using 'fastboot flash',
or, probably less intrusive, boot into recovery mount system partition writeable and push build.prop manually using 'adb push'.

Need some help

hey guys
Need some help for my Dell Streak 5
I tried installing custom rom but it gave error that signature not found
So then I installed Rom manager from ClockWorkMod
It asked for root
So then I installed Superuser
But some how it dosen't seem to work
Where am I getting it wrong?
I am completly noob in android now
What recovery are you using? Sounds like CWM. There's an option within CWM recovery to toggle signature verification. That should turn it off and let you install whatever ROM you want. Also, ROM manager is known to not work with the Streak. Not sure if that's changed with the latest versions of CWM for the Streak.

But I have problem using guide
Because I am trapped in loop
CWM wants me to be root and I can't be root
because when I try to flash Superuser.zip as update.zip
it's giving error signature not recognized
so without root I can't use cwm and without cwm I unable to root the phone
:crying:
You need to read and follow the advice given to you in this thread earlier by Edrill.
In Clockworkmod 6.0.1.2:
1. Select "Apply update from .zip file on SD card".
2. Select "toggle signature verification" and make sure the bottom of the screen says "Signature Check: Disabled".
3. Select Superuser.zip and flash it.
Your device, for whatever reason, has the signature check function enabled. As long as it is enabled you will not be able to install unsigned zips, like Superuser.zip apparently is. So disable it!
All my zips are signed and the signatures are valid.
His version is either modified or corrupt, he never stated where he got it from.
He also stated he's using rom manager, so there's likely other issues beyond that.

Cant Update to 4.2.2

Hey guys,
my phone just informed me that i could update to 4.2.2 but i am/was running a rooted n4 with stock rom and franco kernel. Franco posted how to properly upgrade to 4.2.2 (flash stock kernel, remove power.xxxx.so (cant remember the name atm)and rename power.xxxx.so.fbak, then reboot and flash zip) but it didnt work for me. i flashed stock kernel and removed the power file + renamed the backup power file but when i try to flash the update.zip im getting an error that looks like this:
assert failed apply_patch_check( /system/lib/hw/power.default.so
Error in /sdcard/update.zip (the .zip i downloaded right from google servers) (status 7)
what could the reason be? id appreciate any help!
and yes....i did look up the other threads that had similar problems but that didnt fix it.
thanks in advance!!
Your "/system/lib/hw/power.xxxxx" file didn't pass the check.
I guess the original one was overwritten with a custom one before being renamed, by a different kernel install.
well i did exactly what was stated in the guide:
1. Download stock kernel from here:
forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2024982
2. Flash it in recovery.
3. Boot into android.
4. Go from root explorer to system/lib/hw and
i) Delete power.msm8960.so
ii) Remove .fkbak extension from power.msm8960.so.fkbak so it looks like, power.msm8960.so
iii) Fix the permissions to rw-r--r--
5. Reboot
i even tried it with the .so file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147427

You need to reflash the system image. That's where it is failing.
Read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Specifically question #1 in the Q&A Section. Then look at Section C.
Try this one.
I got it from a 4.2.1 rom.zip i have had on my desktop for 2 months.

It seems like you are having trouble locating the exact files the need to be replaced. An easy solution is to re-flash the system.img in fastboot. You won't lose any data.
The Q&A section at the bottom of the OP.
any zip flashable version of the system.img around? couldnt find that one
I am having this exact issue. Any luck?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
after some trying i got sick of it and just flashed a nandroid backup. but now im facing another issue.... im using wugfresh's kit and usually that kit performs every reboot into bootloader etc. itself but somehow it doesnt :/ i manually have to shut down / start the fastboot mode then it works. but i really dont like that solution.... just looks like smth is broken to me any idea abotu that?
That did the trick
Have same issue as OP'er. Flashing system.img via fastboot did the trick. I was then able to install the OTA no issues. No data loss.
