Ive got a Samsung Galaxy S unlocked on 3 Network using Gingerbread 2.3.3. What ive done is i tried to gain access to the SuperUser account using the CF-Root method. All went well until i wanted to see if i could remove the SuperUser account because when it comes to Christmas i am wanting to sell the phone to a Friend. When i used GingerBreak 1.2 to UnRoot the Phone the SuperUser app uninstalled it self but the CWM and Tweaks app was still on the Phone. I attempted to remove the Apps going through Settings > Applications > Manage Applications but then i noticed it was locked into the phone unable to delete (FACEPALM). So i tried to Re-Root the phone using the CF-Root method again but it didnt give me back SuperUser access nor did it install the SuperUser app but the Odin Application claimed that it was successfully installed.
So what i am wanting to do is remove them two applications from my phone (CWM and Tweaks).
The Plan was to Root the phone and then install Darkys Rom since it looks Cool and Green But since ive never done anything like Rooting the phone or Jailbreaking an Ipod i really didnt have a clue what i was doing. Youtube help me to root it but then i messed it up.
Hope someone will know how to fix this phone and maybe get back on track on installing Darkys Rom
the tweaks and cwm apps are baked into the kernel.
If you want to get rid of them you'll have to flash a stock kernel

Well flashing the stock firmware is actually quite easy but there's loads of them out there depending on what country you're in and network. If you're in the UK I'd go for I9000XXJVQ which I think is still the latest, I'm using it anyway.
Sign yourself up at http://www.samfirmware.com and you can go in to the firmware section, then in to android and then the I9000 and there's a whole list of them there.
They've also got guides in there to follow on how to use Odin which is the flashing software, oh and bit of advice I'd go for Odin V1.3 if I were you. I've heard a few rumors about problems with V1.8. I alway use 1.3
Good news is its actually quite difficult to really kill a galaxy S so take it nice and easy and follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Anyway the best way to learn is fixing it after its gone wrong he he.

The latest stock firmware in the UK according to Kies on my phone was JVQ.
I took it right back to the original JM1 it came with and that's as far as it went for me.
i am amused how do you try to help not knowing what is going on, thank god noone said put the phone to fridge for 5 minutes

but cfroot untouched itdelf should give you su as long as you will not try to update it via market - if you will lose su after that or due flashing some newb kernels use above link to regain it

Problem: I am going abroad and will not have data. I order to have a clean phone and delete any data consuming app, I just decided to factory reset. I did that using OCW. Reboot, and see if you can get superuser access on titanium backup.

I tried this but still no good. It seems like the tab didn't even get rooted. Root Tester tells me it isn't although Odin appears to have done its work. It seems like something is preventing the file from being transfered.
Well thanks for your help. Slept over it and decided to install overcome.
Except I didn't go all the way. I just used the stock JQ1 gingerbread firmware (which is better than Telstra's btw) and tried to apply the root from here.
It worked.

But I do have some questions.

1) Once this is done what's to stop some update from my carrier un-doing it all?
2) If that were to happen how much pain would I be in for?
3) If the only way to protect one's self from this is to somehow disable OS/firmware updates... is the only way to get future OS updates through a ROM?
4) This TWRP thing seems to be a backup/recovery tool?
I gather that it also enable ROMs flashing, etc?
I've read others like "Titanium Backup" because it can freeze/remove the bloatware.
Are they both kinda the same thing?

Am I correct in my understanding that the TWRP leverages nandroid - or are they comepeting solutions.

TWRP - is a recovery, so you can perform nandroid backups, and to flash roms, and to restore backups. Nothing more, nothing less.
Titanium Backup is a app you use within the rom, to backup and restore apps with, you can read more on this going to the market, it will explain this app's features and what it does.
They are not the same, 2 different programs, that do 2 different things.
Question 5 & 6 answered in #4 answer.

Also if one were to ODIN back to stock... and get an update... and then re-root...
I assume you could get an old backup from an external storage area and try to get all your "stuff" back?

Once you root,, it changes the rom status to custom, so the update see's that and does NOTHING. if you odin back to stock, un-root, you can force updates, but be careful with updates, carriers are patching things so we can not do what we do, and that is to run custom roms on phones THAT WE OWN!
And btw, if this person xBeerdroiDx gives me a thanks, he is saying I did ok... If you seem to have anymore questions, his guide is one of the best....

In the past on my S2, I would flash a lot of roms. maybe after every 5 or 10 I would odin back to stock, boot it up, re-root, re-twrp, then flash another rom. just to get a very clean slate in a sense.
If I were to do this with the S4, you dont think the ATT update would get pushed in the 30 mins to an hour that the phone is in its stock state, do you? I dont want to get mf3'd.

hehe it could, but highly unlikely, and if you feel that it may happen, do what I do, remove the sim until you get rooted, and then put the sim back in and complete the setup. Your not going to get calls in that time period anyways.

I'm just throwing my limited experience out. I have never went back to stock via Odin simply to get a "clean slate." Completing a full wipe including a system format in recovery will be sufficient for a clean OS. I would reserve Odin flashing as a last resort for when problems aren't being remedied by a full wipe and format via recovery.

TWRP - is a recovery, so you can perform nandroid backups, and to flash roms, and to restore backups. Nothing more, nothing less.
Titanium Backup is a app you use within the rom, to backup and restore apps with, you can read more on this going to the market, it will explain this app's features and what it does.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but its my understanding if you're rooted and still stock the MDL will still update to MF3 unless you either completely flash a custom ROM or rename the OTA files that At&t have on our devices.

somewhat, but as soon as you root, your phone status is custom correct? therefor how can it update? Yes, it is better to do a custom rom, but you can still stay on MDL and never get updates, freezing the samsung update will work, but I gave the easiest way in his situation.

Hi...I'm another noob with a question about this. I also just used CASUAL to root my phone yesterday. I am definitely rooted but my Device Status actually still shows Official. Following the info in another thread, I used ES File Explorer's Root Manager to rename the wssyncmldm.apk.

The thread was actually written for a previous update, but renaming the apk should still be relevant.

I was just rooted and it showed custom status after, so no updates, you must check the status. just flashing a kernel will change the status, if you are going to root and install a recovery, some things are to go without saying.
Btw, I have learned, that nothing with information is an overkill, if you haven't notice xda is a bunch of peoples ideas and such, and many do not work for others, it is a hit miss.

Yeah...maybe I am referring to the wrong thing, but I was surprised that Settings > More > About Device > Status > Device Status still said "Official" on mine. I know CASUAL succeeded. TWRP is installed, SuperUser is installed. And I was able to use ES File Explorer's Root Manager to change system to R/W and rename the apk. So even though I'm very much an android novice, I'm pretty certain I'm rooted. I don't necessarily plan to flash a rom yet...but since I was still on MDL I wanted to retain the current ability to do so!
Is there some other place that it would show Custom as opposed to Official? That's actually why I went ahead and renamed that file.

if you are paranoid then there are 3 files you can freeze. i cant remember which ones, but one is att update something something, thats all i can remember.

I am using an old samsung galaxy s4 that my grandma bought from a pawn shop. It was rooted when she bought it. I want to unroot the phone because I really have no interest/experience in having a rooted phone, and one of the apps I use frequently is Snapchat and I can't log into Snapchat when my phone is rooted for some reason? So I looked up a tutorial on how to unroot using Odin and it seemed fairly simple so I tried it and I keep getting a red "failed!" in the box. Am I missing a step? am I doing something wrong? I don't understand. I am new to this I have no experience rooting phones what so ever and I'm scared I'm going to mess it up but it's been fine all 3 times I've tried, it just keeps failing. Please help me. I mean I don't absolutely need to have snapchat so if there's no way I can unroot it successfully I'll just give up, but it would be nice to be able to use it again.

Having root is like having administrator rights on Windows, it does not harm your phone or anything unless you do something like flash a file that is not made for it. Snapchat probably just needs to be uninstalled then reinstalled.
Anyway...
There are 2 ways to unroot. The first method is to download the superSU app from the Google play store. SuperSU is a root management app and has an unroot option built into it. The next method is using ODIN like you are using, however you have to find the right ODIN stock .tar file for the bootloader you're on (or a compatible .tar that lets you downgrade like NB1). Once you have the right .tar file, just flash over what you have and it should get you back to 100% stock without root.

Okay, so I downloaded SuperSU and did the unroot option. It loaded for a few minutes, then the app closed, I rebooted my phone and SuperSU was gone. I really don't know how to tell if it's still rooted or not? but I think it is because snapchat STILL won't let me login. in order to tell if it was still rooted or not I redownloaded SuperSU (bc Idk any other way of knowing if it's rooted or not) and now when I open the app it gives me an alert saying "root undetected" and the only option it gives me is "how to root" and I can't do anything on the app. Thanks for the help.

No problem, always glad to help. You can check to see if your phone is still rooted by getting the app called "root checker" from the Google play store. Since you did the unroot via superSU and it disappeared, I am guessing you're now unrooted. However, you should go download root checker to be sure.
