I'm new to the Glacier scene. And I've read through some of the rooting threads. It looks like they're a couple of different methods for rooting the Glacier, although it looks like some people with newer devices seem to have problems with a couple of the methods.
All I'd like to do is delete some of the stock bloatware. Do I need S-Off to accomplish this on the 4G? What would be the easiest way to approach this? At this point I don't see the need for an OC, or a custom rom, etc... I know before root/S-OFF was obtained on the G2 that people figured out how to go in and disable the stock apps. Is there a way to do this on the 4G?
You'll need root access to delete the bloatware, but it's relatively easy. You can use grankin's s=off root script visionary method (which can easy be reverted with the PD15IMG.zip file) in the resource bible and then delete what you don't want. I've deleted a massive amount of apps, more than any guide I've seen, with no side effects. The positive of rooting the phone is that you can install CW recovery and backup your phone before making changes, so even if you delete something important you can restore and not lose data.
Thanks! I know that someone (cyan?) used to publish a list of applications that were safe to remove. If I remember correctly it was a list of applications and all of their dependencies. Is there anything like this for the 4G?
I just google searched at first, found one on androidforums. Then I just got experimental and started deleting anything I didn't use. As long as you keep that backup it takes about 5 minutes to get yourself back to a working state after making a mistake. I never did, kept it simple and only deleted things I recognized and had a market replacement for or never opened.

Cool that works for me!
Correct me if I'm wrong (of course you will), but simply rooting the phone and deleting the apps doesn't actually do anything. Its more of hiding the app from the menu. To truly get rid of the bloatware, you need to install another ROM.
I've rooted the phone once, deleted apps, unrooted and sure enough those apps were back.

You are correct. if you do not turn s=off you are only hiding those applications v. deleting from the memory bank of the phone. If you turn s=off you can truly delete them w/o worrying about them returning.

I believe that, that's what happens when you attempt to delete apps with S-ON; they'll 're appear' after a reboot.
You need S-OFF for true write access. You don't need a custom rom to delete apps with S-OFF, because you've got true access to your device. You can delete whatever you want with S-OFF. That's my understanding anyway.
once you root your phone, you can uninstall all the bloatware you want with titanium backup
i just downgraded my brother's vibrant to 2.1 update1 so that i can root cuz i couldnt get it to work with 2.2. and now when i do the update.zip file it doesnt seem to work. i get a superuser app but i dont have root. idk what is going on. i have tried everything from one click root to manual rooting. whenever i go to the main recovery and hit reinstall packages the yellow bar doesnt go all the way before it says it's finished and reboots. could this be an issue? please help.. p.s. i know i'm not rooted because i go to titanium and it says i dont have root access. and i have searched but havent found anyone with an experience like i'm having
Just a tip
I actually had this happen to me on a evo. Not 100% certain that its your same issue. But I have had Titanium NOT get root access even if the phone ACTUALLY IS rooted. Try downloading another app that requires root access and see if it has root privileges. Like wireless tethering app. If any other rooted apps work then you know its just titanium. It has problems getting access to root sometimes. If you DO have root access then simply uninstall titanium and reinstall until it gains access. Remember to go into super user and delete the saved root permission to titanium so it can RESAVE the permission once it works. If nothing else gains access then obviously you are not rooted. Hope you figure it out.
You can try to root with z4Root, I have the apk for it. PM me if you want it, all you need is apk manager to install it then it should root your phone no problem

Have you started from scratch with Odin again?
Try use the toolbox.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954509
Odin back to stock JFD 2.1 then root with superoneclick. After you root it may require you going back into recovery and reinstall packages. reboot then go to the market download Rom manager, open it and you should be good to go... this works every time
WAIT
if the only reason you say you arent rooted is Ti Backup, press "problems" to download busybox.
That alone may fix your problem.
because i have no shame, i'll admit it. this is my second root ever. first was on my droid 2 r2d2 to remove the crap that wasnt necessary.
using this tutorial, just google samsung continuum froyo, and its on addictive tips. I followed the directions properly.
Basically, I used odin3 with a custom froyo rom, i did everything correctly, and i began to use titanium backup to remove some bloatware. what i removed was the GO Launcher stuff and now my homescreen is just a black screen. I've tried using recovery mode and restored that way. i've done that 10+ times. i cant get to any apps, only pressing the bottom ticker to access my text messages and notifications slide down bar. thats it. no apps. at all. can someone tell me how to revert back to the original software? then i will re-root again and this time NOT remove anything. or someone can show me properly how to remove it.
thanks. itll help a lot!
Go launcher (in most roms for the continuum) the ONLY launcher installed so when you got rid of it with TiB you screwed the whole UI. Try booting into Recovery wipe data fact reset wipe cache. then reboot. pull battery reflash on odin, make sure repartition is unchecked. let it reboot. should be back to normal.
can you explain that in a different way. i tried wiping in recovery mode it didnt work
Are you using <2e> recovery (samsung stock) or CwM?
You removed the launcher, this is why. You probably deleted a file called TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
You have a few options now, do you have CWM installed? If so go download another rom, put it on your sdcard some how then install it. It will save you much time and you don’t have to remove the bloat as it’s already removed.
If you aren’t familiar with CWM(clock work recovery) I would suggest researching it s you will be dealing a lot with it.
I would recommend reflashing via odin so that you have all files again. If you want to get rid of bloat, install nuckin or eco07-clean they both are good basic roms. I am currently working on a rom which is called miunia it is as minimalistic as I can make it. It is still in beta forms but it can be installed through odin. If you want the launcher I suggest flashing one of mine for the time being..

if you deleted the actual file, just rebooting the phone won't fix the issue. you will have to replace the launcher or factory reset.
For future reference, another option is to get on android market from your computer and download a launcher. It will send it to your phone and install automatically. Then, when you hit the home button, it should run the launcher.

I know this has been asked but i am new to Android. This is my first device i am tring to root and cannot root i have tried using Iconia root and Gingerbreak. Both do not work on my device. I don't want to take my device (Acer Iconia A500) to a older android software. and was wondering if somebody can point me in a direction of a valid way to root HC 3.2, i would be in your dept.
Again i am sorry for making this tread i know it has been asked and asked and asked but there is alot of bogus things and/or solutions for older software for my device.
Unfortunately, to root 3.2 due to the new acer bootloader, you first have to rollback to an older version of HC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Not that it can be a little bit unstable, but most folks were able to work with it, and have success.
After you get your root, you can flash most of the 3.2 roms in the dev forum for the 500.
It seriously is not as bad as it sounds to roll back to the 3.01 software, root, and then install your custom rom. once you get the files downloaded, you'll be good to go in less than 30 minutes (probably less than 15 if everything goes flawlessly).
Yea I was surprised at how quick and painless the process was, and some of the custom ROMS are far better than the Acer OTA one. The rollback to 3.01 I believe is the simplest but I think I read before of someone rooting 3.2 without rolling back. It was a very complicated procedure though and I wouldn't recommend it.
yea
This is what i feared is i had to go back to a older system, but i understand and i may do it. All i need to know is does going back to the old software delete all my files on here and if so whats the best backup program to use? by files i mean apps, music, and settings.

Anything on the sd card is safe (if you keep your music and fotos there). As for apps, the Market always remembers paid apps, and the newer market usually remembers most of the free apps you downloaded (I believe the apps are synched to google), so when you flash a new rom, it usually (in my experience) starts to download them all once you login to your account on first boot.
Out of luck on settings though. Installing a different rom will wipe away all user data. App settings, etc. You can use a backup app like Titanium backup, and backup like game data and app settings, then restore them after flashing a new rom, but really, I feel it's better to get a fresh start on a new rom

If you are worried about backing up your apps, there are free apps in the market that will create backup files of your APK's. As for music and files, i find that flashing a new ROM they are still there, but just to be safe you can transfer them to a usb stick or something if you are worried about losing them. As for settings in the apps, you might be out of luck. I don't know a way of keeping them, but at the same time I never really cared to.

I used method #2 in this link and it worked great for me. Then installed one of the rooted 3.2 roms in the development section and was up and running in no time. No data was deleted and all my apps were ready to go. When you first boot after the downgrade you will get a bunch of force closes, don't worry that is normal. Just follow the directions, install and run iconiaroot1.3, then install the cwm recovery through the acer recovery installer, then install the rooted 3.2 rom and when you boot up everything will be working correctly and you will be rooted. Here is the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Also, I downloaded and installed the iconiaroot 1.3 and the acer recovery installer before downgrading so everything was ready to go. After you install and enter the cwm recovery, only wipe dalvik and cache before installing the 3.2 rom. If you wipe data you will loose all of your data. Took me about 10 minutes for the whole process and I didn't loose any data or have to re-install any apps.
tring but not success
i downloaded the zip file and installed the files in the zip file to my external cd card......then when i try to reboot using the power+vol-down keys it starts to load files then the android emblem comes up loads to 3/4 the the bar goes away and the android stays and now has a caution symbol in the middle and then the tab boots normal with all normal software......and help as to why i cannot flash the old software
Sounds like the file got corrupted. If you downloaded from a PC, try downloading it again. If you downloaded from the tab, try doing it from a PC and then transferring it to the tab.
Am using Tibu to back up apps now, but am going to 'attempt' to flash a new ROM that's rooted and just in case it doesn't go as planned and I lose root, I'd like to know if there's a app or whatever that allows a unrooted phone the same or near same options and ability to back up apps that Tibu has. Any animal like that exist???
No, Titanium Backup is as powerful as it is because of root access. Without that, there is no way to get the same functionality, no matter what app you're using.
And if you're trying to flash a rooted ROM to a phone that's already higher than 4.4.4, you aren't going to find success...

This shouldn't even be a concern.. You're missing the most important step in flashing a new ROM. It should be in every single ROM thread, for any device here on XDA, its usually the first on the list of instructions...?
MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT ROM!!
You do this in your custom recovery, TWRP, CWM or Phils...
This restores your system exactly as it was, when you made the backup, your call logs, messages, apps, app datas, even app caches, if you select it when making the backup..
Backups are one of the main purposes for a custom recovery, if you screw up, you can always go back..
Were you not aware of this till now??
Unless you're intention is to stick with the ROM, that's not rooted.. Not sure why you'd want that, but everyone's different, so I'd recommend using Helium instead of TB, root isn't required with that app..
I'm not on a developer edition. It does not have a unlocked bootloader, so not sure I can 'go back' if the thing doesn't work right. Maybe I'm wrong. But I've heard once you flash past 4.4 there is no going back to root and I'm going to 6. In the past on unlocked units I've had no problems going back. But locked is another animal...it's rooted but not unlocked...
