UK HD2 data loophole with US T-mobile? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I’ll be blunt. I am from California, USA, however, I use a UK HD2 on T-mobile. I’ve never had the urge to use 3G on my phone; I have wifi everywhere I go. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t, right?
Anyways, I’ve recently had an urge to try out data on my phone… First, Is it possible via t-zones or web2go? Knowing that I can’t use t-mobile’s 3G (my Leo doesn’t have those frequencies) can I use t-zones or web2go? ?
T-mobile has not been able to catch/record my phone-type on their website. They don’t even know I have a UK HD2. For all they know, I could be using a DUMB-Phone. I’ve had my Leo for more than a year now. Haven’t been caught.

Just switch the wifi off, lol. Your phone will default to mobile data as long as that's switched on in the options.

Caught doing what? You think they give a **** what type of phone you're using? You could use a couple of cans and a piece of string for all they care, as long as you're paying them your monthly blood sacrifice.

Do you have Tzones or web2go on a line already? If not, it is very difficult (but not impossible) to get it added b/c it is a grandfathered plan.
If you already have the plan (or get it added) then yes it will work with your phone. You will of course be on 2g which is painfully slow however. I bought my HD2(US version) second hand and have been using it with my Tzones plan since April (running both winmo and android). On my.tmobile.com they still think I am using a dumbphone.

thank you, but my question is: will i be able to use 2G even if i have a UK HD2 under US tmobile????

I'd imagine so, if you get data enabled they'll enable it, you're paying them they don't care what you're using, however depending on what bands you can use I'm unsure, I have gsm 900 1800 and wcdma I believe (2g 3g and hspda). If you're network works on any of those you're good to go

2G yes
3G no
I don't see why you feel what you are doing is so covert and sneaky. I have a European HD2 and was in the US for a few months this year, bought an AT&T pre-paid sim and used it, simple...why would they care?

USA SERVICE PLANS

Just wanted to know what service plans would be good for JasJar in the USA.
I use T-Mobile but of course we americans are lagging behind on mobile technology communications. I find I cannot use half of the features and it doesnt even have EDGE support. So wondering if any of you have T-Mobile in the USA and what service/internet plans are you using? :?:

That's a bit of an exageration. The only thing you cannot use is 2100MHz UTMS. Everything else works fine.
You really only have Cingular and T-Mobile from which to pick in the US. Cingular has more coverage, but there are some 850MHz areas where the JasJar will not function as a phone. The TMo $20 unlimited gprs plan is pretty sweet. As others have lamented, the only thing this phone is missing (mostly for those of us on this side of the pond) is a quad-band radio, and EDGE or 1900MHz UTMS.

I definitely have to second this. I've looked at other plans, Cingular as well as going something "non-sim" before I got the Jasjar, and nothing seemed to come close to the $20 unlimited data with TMo. My minutes and data combined with TMo are less than the unlimited data alone with some others.
It all depends on your needs though. I don't spend a lot of time in areas that aren't covered by TMo, so that issue is moot and price can play a larger factor for me.
USA service plans
ahh I see your point. I just got the $20.00 unlimited data plan. Is there anything special needed to get it started. Does anybody know if Tmo will start coming out with 3G networks?

Unfortunately, the news on 3G networks in the USA is not very good for us Universal owners. Cingular has already started to implement their 3G service in a few markets in the US and will be expanding their 3G service in 2006. I haven't heard anything about T-Mobile's 3G plans yet. Unfortunately, however, Cingular's 3G network works at 1900MHz and T-Mobile's most likely will as well. This means that even if Cingular or T-Mobile provide 3G service the Universal won't work with it, because the Universal only supports 3G at 2100MHz.
In the US, the 2100MHz band currently belongs to the US Military and there are rumors that that band may be made available to cell phone providers in 2007, but even if that happens, but the time the band is available and the service providers start using it I'm sure that my universal will be obsolete.
I'm using a Universal in the USA right now, but I don't expect to ever be able to use it on a 3G network here.
Brett
EDGE on MDA Pro/JasJar
So you're saying EDGE won't work on the MDA Pro? According to T-Mobile, EDGE is already in place in most of its US network. Also, GPRS to EDGE from the providers standpoint basically involved a software update. Can this be done on the MDA Pro as well?
One final question. Anyone know how I can find out if my MDA Pro has the latest rom and where to get updates. My phone came from Germany (T-Mobile)?
The Universal does not do Edge afaik. The HTC Wizzard does do edge. So the only difference between the two for US users (who cant use 2100MHz UMTS) is the low res screen on the wizzard, and the fact that the wizzard is a whole lot more portable. Oh and the mini SD port!
Here in the UK, none of the networks support edge, which is a bit of a pain for wizzard owners! I would have had a wizzard for the smaller size if edge were available in UK, or if wizzard was 3G !
Nigel
Thanks
If I choose then to sell may MDA Pro, what would you recommend as being the most comparable item that will at least work with EDGE and UMTS @ 1900 in the USA. I am otherwise very satisfied but one reason why I paid a premium price was to have something that would not be obsolete too soon, be able to work with the next generation (3G) and be downward compatible (EDGE, GPRS).
I am happily using T-Mobile in the USA. I bought the jasjar knowing that I would be limited to GPRS on the data side. Its many other advantages make the compromise worth it to me.

US Carriers
I too am using my JasJar with T-Mobile in the US and am quite happy with the service. I recognize that I will not be able to use 3G with this device, but I'm OK with that. For me the features of the device far outweigh that single drawback.

Straight Answer on US Carrier Support

All;
I'm trying to find a straight answer on US carrier support for the HD. So far; I've read that there is:
1)No support for the HD in the US
2)Support for GSM only in the US
3)Possible support for 3G depending on your area
4)Working 3G support in some areas
So; what's the deal here? Do we have a "CONFIRMED" working HD in the US? The questions I'd like to have answered in one thread if possible:
1)What carriers are people currently using SUCCESSFULLY with the HD?
1a)What area is that working in?
2)How is the internet speed on it?
2a)If 3G is working, what kind of speed differences are you seeing?
2b)If 3G is working, what area are you in that it works for you?
3)If it is working for you in any form; were custom ROMS needed; or any sort of hack short of plugging in your SIM card?
3a)If needed; links would be great!
4)Any reported and confirmed 'show-stopping' bugs / problems using the HD in the US.
5)Any items or information we need to be aware of when trying to purchase this phone for US use? (Don't buy from EU...don't buy from AUS, avoid certain model versions...etc?)
Answers so far ((so you don't have to go searching for them!))
1) T-Mobile & ATT
1a) Wisconsin -ATT | Chicago - ATT
2) Edge = ok
2a) No - Wisconsin, Chicago
2b)
3) No hacks needed - plug in SIM card, possibly might have to select network from list
3a)
4) Problems sending MMS on AT&T. 99% send then fail.
5)
I'm using T-Mobile in the US.
Didn't have to do ANYTHING special at all to get it running. Stuck in my tmobile sim, it asked which carrier I wanted to use (T-Mobile US or Tuyo or something like that). I selected tmobile and wala.
Don't know about 3G as I do not have a data plan right now (it's $25 / month and I have Wi-Fi 88% of the time).
Have flashed and hard-resetted many times since with no problems.
ONLY PROBLEM: MMS will not work. I have searched all over and made sure that I have all the correct settings. However it will not work no matter what I try. Sending usually makes it to 99% then fails. Sucks.

The HD will work in the US on either T-Mobile or ATT.
I am using ATT in Wisconsin and can confirm the phone will not pick of 3G.
EDGE internet speeds are pretty good. I wouldn't go streaming youtube, however. Wifi is around in more places than you think...
I'm using the ROM that came on the phone. I popped in my ATT sim card and all the settings were detected and it worked in a matter of 30 seconds.
I am in Chicago area on AT&T and it works fine. No 3G data but edge is fine. I am streaming video using a slingbox and it works ok.

It's not the phone that won't pick up 3G but the lack of a network or cell masts transmitting a 3G/HSDPA signal. So people, lets not blame the phone if you subscribe to inadequate networks. 3G has been around for over 10 years. I can't believe americans still need a tutorial.

it's both the phone and network's fault, the phone for not having UMTS 850, 1700, or 1900. And the networks for choosing those frequencies over umts 900 and 2100.

Wow, a little full of yourself there? It's not like I climbed towers and decided to put 850 bands in America.
I believe if I made a $750 purchase, I would know whether or not the phone was capable of picking up US 3G bands or not.
But I guess your right, I should move to Europe to take advantage of the "adequate" networks.
There is no need to be a jerk about it.

I'm using mine on ATT, use mostly wifi which has been good, EDGE is good the few times I've used it (based on what I've heard from people using 3G on other phones, it's not that much better than wifi, but I'm sure that's location dependent). I'm using it in NC and surrounding states, have only sent/received MMS a couple of times but haven't had any problems yet. Didn't have to do anything except insert the SIM and choose ATT. I haven't seen the 3G icon pop up so that means no 3G compatibility where I'm at.
TMobile USA is great
I am an airline pilot and use my HD nationwide and it works splendidly in every city I have been to. EDGE is much, much better than GPRS that I had on my Imate Jasjar (Universal) but I would agree that the only drawback is to streaming YouTube. YouTube on EDGE is functional but it uses the lower quality mode.
I am successfully using MMS on TMo here in the USA so any trouble with it might just be a setting that needs to be tweaked. Having had some trouble with that on my JasJar in the past I just set it up manually and did just that when I got the HD. I didn't even try the default MMS settings, just deleted them and put my own in that I knew worked.
As for 3G, didn't work on my JasJar and not on my HD but for me it turns out to not be a deal breaker at all. Having had four different WM devices over 6 years, the HD is blowing me away. I really love it's speed, screen and size. HTC did a really nice (not great) job with the TouchFlo UI and hope that a few updates will make it great. Now that I installed the new Resco Explorer (GSFinder before) I don't need to use the stylus at all! I like that the most.
For those of you in the USA, give TMobile a try. I don't think you would be unhappy with their service and pricing.
Regards,
Gordo
I'm using iWireless (Owned by Tmobile) in Iowa. No problems getting it to work like all the others here. I don't have a data plan, so haven't tested that out yet. And it's just commonly known that the HD doesn't support US 3G.
It supports 3G, but we cant use it because the antenna is set to receive 2100 and 900.

You may need the data plan for MMS to work properly. I have T-mobile in the US and here is what I did. I signed up for their $9 amonth TZones (now web2go) package. Don't tell them you have a "smartphone" or else you will have to really fight to get it.
It is not great. You have a choice between 100 MB a month or 50 MB and tons of messaging. Since I mostly use WiFi the 50MB was enough.
If they tell you that the $9 plan won't work on their phone, don't fall for it. It will work on any phone.

WOW. That is WAY great information to know. So the $9 / month T-Zones is REAL full data / internet browsing? Not some stupid V-Cast like thing?
I have been dying trying to figure out what to do...when I signed up I thought unlimited data was $6 / month (it was some web2go thing for $5.99), then I find out that they discontinued it right after I got my phone and it's now $25...ridiculous. So I have been wondering, should I:
A. Switch to ATT.
B. Have an HD w/ no internet plan.
C. Go back to my vogue on sprint evdo rev a fastest mobile internet in us.
Are you pretty positive about that then? I could sign up for that right now and get 50mb browsing full internet for $9 / month as long as I tell them that it isn't a smartphone?
THANK YOU SO MUCH. AWESOME information for my situation...
Jim.
Uhm... perhaps I am missing something obvious but.
If i go to phone, then select "Options", then select "Band".
I can choose between network type "GSM" or "WCDMA".
Also for GSM/UMTS band I can choose between:
1) UMTS(2100)+GSM(900+1800)
2) UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
3) UMTS(800+2100)
Does that option have no effect? or what?

Can the HD2 T8585 Work on U.S. ATT 3G At All?

We just bought the T8585 touch HD2. Of course it's an amazing device and I know it has always been said to be limited to Edge here in the states unless you buy the new T9xxx HD2. I'm just looking to verify this though because I've read for days now and want to see some real world responses. So:
CAN THE HD2 T8585 WORK WITH AT&T 3G IN THE UNITED STATES? What radio/rom/rilphone.dll combination would I use to make this work or can it just not be done?
Thanks so much in advance!!!

HD2 T8585 will not work with AT&T 3G since AT&T 3G is running 850MHz and the HD2 T8585 only supports 900 / 2100 MHz.
Yes, the Aussie version T9xxx WORKS with AT&T 3G.
Thanks a lot. That's the response I was looking for to validate my thoughts. If anyone has a different experience, please share.
The T9193 does work. Any rom with complementary radio should do the trick. Does not need special radio. I have sea wwe 1.66 installed on mine. No issues at the moment. At my home I pull in speeds of 1600kbps on H (3G+). You might want to check with ATT to see if your area has 850UMTS as not all 3G areas do. The T9193 will not give you 3G on the 1900UMTS band.
so agoattamer your sayin that if i got an t8585 changed the radio and all tha other stuff that i can get 3g if my area pulls the 1900umts BAND?
No I never said anything close to that. The Telstra T9193 is UMTS850+2100. The European T8585 is UMTS900+2100. Nothing can change or takeaway the bands.
I said the T9193 can get UMTS850 for ATT in the US. But only if ATT has that band available in your area. Niether phone has the UMTS1900 band.

Hey there,
Just wanted to let you know that although "we" have a T8585, don't feel left behind by the T9393 just because we can't use 3G for U.S. At&t.
there is a known and proven workaround to tweak the EDGE speed if you are using U.S. At&t. I get about 750kbps - 900kbps using my T8585 using this tweak.
Please read this thread --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627318
in my case, since my last device was a 2g iphone, im only paying $20 bucks with 200 text messages for the EDGE unlimited plan, compare if i have a T9393 which i will be required to purchase the $30 bucks data only plan (and not all places here in East coast has 3G, so i think it's a better choice for me to have a T8585) and having this tweak, makes my HD2 experience more exciting.
I have been using this tweak for over a month and reviewed my most recent bill to make sure im not going to be charge off by doing this.
So,..... enjoy!!!!

You must not have heard right or she answered a different question. ATT does NOT have UMTS on 900MHz. ONLY on 850 or 1900, and by the end of the year it will be ALL 850.

Why in the world would you run the old edge unlimited plan on a device who's IMEI isn't in atts data bank?
If one is using a device att doesn't have on their network, you can get the media net unlimited plan for $10-15, which gives you unlimited access to 3g, tethering, and all other features for much cheaper without any risk for att adding a $30+ a month smart phone plan.
Honestly I ran that same plan on my Tilt, Tilt2 and fuze without issue.
Paying more for edge just doesn't make sense to me.

why? because 1st, its like i have a choice coming from an iphone 2g plan? 2nd, att still have my phone listed as the iphone 2g and FYI, if i try to register another phone, they would then need an IMEI., and if i ever provide a regular old flip phone and sign up for the $5-$15 EDGE MEDIA NET ulimited plan and GOT A RANDOM AUDIT CHECK??? how will you explain almost or more than 1GB of data used in a month having a registered device that transmit cant even transmit 20mb a day???
have you ever read the Att terms and condition? a relative of mine in this case got charged off for 5 months of unrestricted use of data using YOUR IDEA and ended up paying for it. 11.xxx GB to be exact.
imagine At&t charge 1cent per kilobyte????
Besides, iphone 2g would be the closest and cheapest plan that can transmit such amount of data without question.
lets just say, "i would rather be safe, than sorry", and besides???? who will jump from a regular flip phone with unlimited plan to an expensive HD2???
all pda or smartphones plan alone from att cost $30 bucks and paying $20 bucks with a whopping 200 free text message and unlimited data is a true golden!
ATT data plans are $30? I thought I was getting screwed for being legacy. [email protected]$25 woot!
Some people are just so paranoid and scared to stick it to the "man"
Had an iphone 2g 3 years ago then i got me an unlocked g1 downgraded my att net plan to media net and been paying 10 bucks for all access internet with my corp discount.
and even used a samsung blackjack as a 3g modem for my pc's.
Where there is a will theres a way.
3 years and counting.
This might sound like a stupid question
Im from the UK, so if i came to the USA with my HD2 and UK Sim for a holiday i couldnt use 3g data on any network?
You would likely roam on ATT so no, you would only have EDGE. Plus, data would be bloody expensive anyways
Ok so I am confused now. I was just at Fry's and they have an HD2 GSM Unlocked for roughly $600.
But on the box it shows the 850 and 1900 bands..... It says its the T8585, will this connect to AT&T 3G
GSM bands are not the same as 3G bands, though the numbering is the same

[Q] HD2 USA and AT&T

Hey I'm gonna buy a tmobile HD2 from a friend of mine and I want to know if it can be use with AT&T.
Also do I haave to get a data plan with this phone?
Yes it can be used with AT&T but you will not get 3G speeds due to the specific bands the phone has.
I have an international HD2 and am using it on AT&T without data plan because AT&T does not have the IMEI for my phone in their database and thus cannot automatically add the smartphone plan. I'm not sure if they have the T-Mobile HD2 IMEIs.
I too have an international HD2 and am runing it on AT&T. You can't use the T-Mobile US one - the bandwidth doesn't work on AT&T only an international version will work.
I was going to say the same thing they said
You can use an Australian HD2 with AT&T and get 3G speeds. Mine works just fine.

I am running an unlocked TmoUSA HD2 on AT&T and it works just fine. Other than the fact that I have no 3G with this on the AT&T network. I am very happy with the performance since I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. I have to drive 15 miles to get into 3G coverage area.
Yeah Baaaby AT&T .... not!!
When in the hell is AT&T going to take expanding their 3G coverage areas seriously? I wonder what it feels like to be the AOL of the cellular world, all those customers and so little speed. This really sucks bigtime!

Do not put your AT&T sim card into a T-Mobile HD2. They will automatically "upgrade" your account to $30/month blackberry data. I had a $10/month unlimited that disappeared and I can't get it back now.

I used a T-Mobile HD2 for 5 months on AT&T without any problems except for no 3G. I used the $10mo data plan and still am. I now use a Telstra HD2 and enjoy full 3G coverage on AT&T. Both HD2's are unlocked and yes, the AT&T sim works fine. Just don't walk in to their store and expect them not to hammer you with the $30 data plan.
There's a real nice fellow from Australia that sold me my 2 HD2's. Very honest and reasonable. If you want his eBay ID, anyone can PM me and I will forward it. Beware of other internet store sellers! Some are selling the same phones for $100+ more and some people have been either screwed out of their money or have gotten refurb/used phones. Honesty is in short supply these days so be careful.
I unlock it... Just call T-mobile and ask for the pin that was yesterday and today got it by email.
Now the phone is for my girlfriend and I she doesn't have any data plan and she doesn't want any....Can this be done? have the phone without any data plan on AT&T?

if they happen to add it on there (by doing a maintenance sweep daily), give them a call and demand that they put DATA OPT-OUT on that line.
Thanks ill call before putting the don card in....I thought that it was mandatory with the phone.

It IS mandatory, that applies to ANY smartphone. Whatever you do, DO NOT tell them you are using any smartphones. iPhones are all in their database since they were the exclusive dealers for them so it's impossible (as far as I know) to use an iPhone on AT&T without them nailing you for a $30 data plan since all the IMEI's are pre-loaded in AT&T's system. At least with the HD2's and other non-AT&T branded smartphones, they don't have the IMEI's and can't just hit you with the data plan.
It's in their contract, any smartphone use requires a data plan. Of course, they also hit you for a tethering fee as well for the privilege of using tethering (computer to smartphone connection) even though there's nothing special about it nor does it use the data service any differently. Just another way for AT&T to stick it to the consumer.

Tmobile US htc hd2 unlocked to use $10 unlimited data plan for non smartphones?

I was wondering if i can use unlocked tmobile htc hd2 with the $10 data plan (unlimited) that is available for non smartphones. Will tmobile realize that i am using htc hd2 and upgrade it to smartphone data plan? i am gonna make a contract with a non smartphone and add that 10 dollar data plan to use it on my htc hd2 Do you have to have an Unlocked htc hd2 (not tmobile branded) to do that? is it even possible either way?
Yes it is possible to do such a thing, but for how long is currently unknown. T-Mobile has recently started denying people using the non-smartphone internet with smartphones internet access as it is a violation of the TOS...so good luck!
So i can do it with the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2? but dont they know that i i am using htc hd2 if i use the 10$ data plan and automatically upgrade it?
Yes they will know you are using an HD2, and yes, it is possible that they will upgrade it automatically. My advice; just opt for the 20USD unlimited smartphone data from the start...you won't have to setup the proxy or live in fear that your plan will be upgraded.
Isnt it 30 USD? if it was 20 then i can probably get the data plan but i am pretty sure the data plan is $30. Wait so if you dont get the $10 data plan on the tmobile branded unlocked htc hd2, will they know its a hd2?
There's no way to get around it. They will know what phone you're using. I do not know if they will make a change to your plan without confirming with you.
I don't know how you will actually enable the $10 plan in the first place though.
Thats a good point aswell. You have to have a device that supports the 10USD plan to even add it to your plan, so you may not be able to anyways. And the full internet is either 20 or 30 depending on your contract arrangement.
I recently got my phone and it's working for me. I get HSDPA speed with the $10 internet.
Yeah it should work.... just so you know you are defrauding the T-Mobile network. There's still a lot folks out there that are apparently still on the T-Zone plan as well....
Actually if you know or are familiar with those Asian run phone shops and ask nicely you don't even need a dumb phone to setup the $10 plan, the reps that work there will just call T-mobile and defraud the whole system for you.....
Yeah... that's just jolly.

Does it really bother you that somebody else has a good deal going with t-zones on the HD2? If it makes you feel better, T-Mobile will probably be forcing users to upgrade their plans starting this Wednesday.
Yeah to me it kinda does, because they know they are screwing the system but continue to do it. Anyways I formally ask that this NOT turn into another debate about the morallity of people using the 10USD plan versus the correct one. Thanks.

Bother me, nope.? I don't even have data plan... i refuse to pay for it when i can get free wifi @ my home/campus/work....
The OP asked a question and i voiced his options, all of them.... whether he chooses to to take the dark route or not is his business. In addition i don't see how you can justify calling T-Zones as "has a good deal going" when you are in fact defrauding the network, which i have clearly pointed out in my previous response. My advice is pretty much borderline crack pot shady... but it's been discussed about here numerous times and t-mobile has done nothing to fix his loophole.... yet...
Just to add about the $20 internet plan. I have it for my HD2 (part of family plan), the rep added it when we were renewing the contract and ordering the phones (my sister got the 3G slide which came with the $25 plan). So if you want it, try calling them and talking to a rep, they should be able to add it for you (YMMV).
T-mobile can block you at any time since they do have a database of their own IMEIs and they know what device is accessing their network by it's IEMI that is transmitted every time the phone accesses the network.
It would be a very simple task for T-mobile to block the non supported devices for that data plan
Well here is what happend when I upgraded one of my lines. I just upgraded to an HD2, a couple days later theytossed on a 104 web plan. Which is fine cuz I want to use the web anyways. when I first was using my HD2 it said that it needed a subcription to access the web, blah blah. So, i changed the wap settings to internet2.voicestream.com and it works great. 3g speeds and everything.
Why did you change to the slower proxy?

The stock epc.tmo doesnt work when you have the 104 (non smart phone plan). The speeds are the same with the internet2 settings. unless you know of a different one that works a well. It works just fine.
I had a phone recently, Nokia 5530, and had the 10 dollar internet plan and I noticed depending where I was in the country I sometimes would get full internet access and other times I would get off the standard tzone areas and it would show subscription upgrade required message.
I think it might depend on where you live for this to work. Perhaps the WAP settings might also work.
There is a way to get the $10 t-zone plan on your HD2
Here is a simple way to get the t-zone on your HD2..
1) Login to your t-mobile account via the web.. register first if you haven't do so.
2) when you login, T-mobile might choose your phone (maybe HD2 already selected).. at this moment, change your phone to any non-smartphone.. like samsung T509 or any non-smartphone as your default phone.
3) go to change service and add the $10 t-zone internet to your plan
4) set your HD2 with the right APN setting you're OK.
5) For me, if you're using internet2.voicestream.com in Winmo works OK and in Android works OK.
This is a cheated way or gray area... Either way T-mobile make extra $$$ from you. I think T-mobile knows this loop hole, but they keep it open because they don't want to upset us cheapie????
my 2 cents
did they get rid of this? I do not see the option anymore.
