I just received my Desire HD today and since I don't have an unlimited data plan I wanted to disable my data connection but I can't find a setting to do this. Is there an easy way to disable the data connection?
Settings-Wireless&networks-Mobile network - uncheck
That`s all.
Enjoy your new Desire HD!

I'm fairly sure there's a HTC widget to do this already on the phone?? Under 'Settings' in the widget menu.
However if not try APN Droid from Market. It's a widget not an app so long press to add it to your home screen after downloading it.

I use the "mobile network" widget to control the 3g usage.

Also if you're not going to use data pick GSM only on network selection since obtaining and maintaining 3G WCDMA signals use more battery than just 2G.

I am going to the USA later this week and don't want to get stung with huge data roaming charges. Is there any way to force data to stay off, with an option to use wifi if needed? I used to use a program on my windows mobile called NODATA...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.
you can use my app "data on demand" for that (in the market). i would also recommend turning settings->wireless and network->mobile networks->data roaming OFF! this always worked for me!
I was just going to post the same thing...
Don't anybof the standard system settings provide the functionality to do the same? e.g. limit to 2g only and/or turning off data updates and/or data roaming etc. ?
Will check the app out though... If you do the keypad option, how do you then reenable or does it just come back on with a reboot meaning you have to do it each time you turn the phone on...?

Setting 2G only wouldn't stop data use, only high-speed data (though that would curtail the rate at which you can accumulate it). There is a setting to not use data while roaming, which should work, though entering incorrect data in the APN settings as I think these programs do would work too.

Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Uncheck Data roaming
That will disable any data use on networks other than your home-network! No other settings/configs are necessary!

Good. That's what I was hoping for/assumed it may do.

Install APNdroid. You can place a widget on the homescreen to turn on, off APNs:

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

I was wondering this also as i am due to go away, but i still want to send and receive MMS (as it is included in my allowance) whilst away. So the question is, if i choose not to have data whilst roaming will this also stop MMS as this is also data? I have a suspicion that it would, so, would the only other option be to just put some bogus APN settings in for internet but keep my MMS settings as it should be? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.
Don't know why people are going into this vast overkill....
Just go into your settings, wireless networks, ensure "Enable data while roaming" is unchecked. In fact, it will be unchecked by default, at least in the Bell rom.
This setting works perfectly (I just went to the US this past weekend), so i see no reason to screw around with the APN or reboot the phone or install other hacky apps. If this box is unchecked the instant you switch to roaming your data is disabled.
I was running bubby's aosp rom then i started to have an internet problem( I tried both 3G and WiFi) and when i use an app that needs internet connection(ESPN Scorecenter, Market, Dolphin Browser, Facebook) it won't work and i would get an internet connection error. After I Started having problems i flashed backed to stock to see if it would work, it didn't. Now i am on Jt Super Clean Rom and still doesn't work
Can someone please help?
anyone please?
? Can Anybody Please help me
Try dialing *228 then option 1. If that doesn't work then try a factory data reset from settings. There may be other options but those are the two I know.

Wipe data and cache. Should take care of it. From clockwork recovery if u have it

no dice it didnt work and i am not factory rest data because i did that alreadt any other suggestions?
Do you live in a former alltel area? I do & I was having similar problems with email apps. Vz tech support had me do *22899 and then change my mobile data setting from automatic a to automatic b in the wireless & network settings menu. This option is only listed in former alltel areas though.

Ya I think so i went on the altlel website to check an it said
"Alltel is now a part of Verizon Wireless in your market, creating America's Largest Mobile to Mobile Calling Family — over 80 Million Strong! We'd like to invite you to shop verizonwireless.com and explore the full lineup of products and services we have available."
ok so i have flashed back to stock everything via odin and i still get problems and idea's?
You could try going to automatic b. As I understand it, it allows use of alltel AND vz towers & sets their priority as well. You get to it from menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile data>system select.

All I have is home and automatic. Am I missing something?
i fixed my problem i flashed the stock recovery, system, and kernal in odin and then did factory rest via privacy settings and then it worked

Nope, the automatic b setting is only on phones that are in former alltel areas from what I was told.

I apologize in advance if this has been asked before. But search through tapatalk didn't find anything. I recently rooted and installed inspire-saga ROM on my Inspire 4G. Now I get an error whenever I try and browse using the mobile network. The message I get is this ... "access to this URL has been blocked" ... How can I fix this? I would love to browse off of WiFi. Thank you.

The network that provides the internet blocks certain website. You would have to phone the network and ask them to take the block off ..

This is all websites including Google. And only when I use the Inspire-Saga ROM. I can make calls and sent mms so I know mobile network is functional.

it's probably something to do with your APN settings.
Find the correct APN settings for your operator (in Google etc.) and then replace them on the phone.
Settings>Networks>Mobile Network (or something like that - I'm using MIUI at the moment.
I've asked this before but whenever I'm connected to gprs the icon at the top says that I'm roaming although I'm on the appropriate network. In froyo this doesn't happen is there possibly something I have to edit in build.prop or a ril file ?

Is it possible to create a separate APN for MMS? Im not sure it is possible for aosp/cm7 roms, but like they do with sense, I would like to split apart the APN so i have one for data and one for mms. Im thinking if i disable the data, i can still send mms, but have data turned off.
Does this make sense? if it does, does anyone know what the settings for this rom would be?
BTW - I am a noob with the APN stuff, and i did give it a shot, but epic fail.
Thanks ahead of time.
You can't. The APN gives you access to the data network, which also is the same route that the MMS uses. So if you shut off data, you shut off MMS.
Thanks, but it must be possible, they do out in the sense roms. If you turn off data you can still send mms

I know for royal ginger you can toggle the data off, and using wifi, with wifi calling turned on, mms will send. Hope that helps . Not sure about other roms. RG is best

Nope. I know how MMS works with the network, because I work for T-mobile. MMS uses the exact same pipeline that the web uses. That's like asking how can I turn off data and still get Pandora to work by changing the apn. They both use the same route to get and send the info.
The option of using WIFI calling that was mentioned is the only other option.

Thank you for the explanation. So how do they do it with sense roms? Every sense rom I have used has the ability to turn off data and still send mms. Check it out... Let me know what you think...
