If your Roms have random 100% CPU peak problem. - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

If you 're using your perfect rom for a week and start notice cpu ramdomly become 100%.
check you alogcat if where are infinity GC then your dalvin memomry default as 24M might not enough. I have this problem and extend to 48M to eliminate it.

could you please put this in "noob" speak so I can do it. How do I extend it? This is the exact problem i am having and it is driving me nuts. Thanks you in advance.

alogcat is a program to watch log files (I guess it's available through Android's Market)
After installing that program you should check if you have lot of GC (Garbage Collector) entries in the logs. If you do, you need to raise your "dalvin memory" to 48M.
I'm still trying to figure out what "dalvin memory" means
Maybe he's talking about android's internal taskkiller: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=622666
But that's a guess. Maybe someone can throw a light into this thread.

thank you my friend. i downloaded the app. i ran it and then my eyes glazed over. I can't tell if the "dalvin" is 24, 12 or 60. I, like you, just need to know what app/program i need to change the number up (if neccessary). thanks. hopefully others to weigh in. i am sick of switching builds. this one is perfect - outside of this glitch.

you can change the value with root explorer. You have to find the build.prop in the /system directory. in it there is :"
# This is a high density device with more memory, so larger vm heaps for it.
dalvik.vm.heapsize=24m
just change it to:
dalvik.vm.heapsize=32m or 48m
i hope it will help.

ok, so i looked in the android folder. I don't have a system folder at all. I have data, android apps, cache, media and root folders. I did a search using SUFBS and it did not pull up "build", "dalvik" or "prop". Any idea where I might find it or is there something I have to do more with the root explorer?

That's your problem. System is NOT in the android folder. it's higher up. Click on the two period at the top to get back to the top. You will see it.

My apologies, I read your post wrong.
Make sure that in root explorer, you go to the actual root of the file system. Basically go "up" until you can't anymore. It's not in the "sdcard" directory.

This does not really solve anything.
It just makes all your apps take more memory...
With a larger heap and more objects the GC will most likely take 2x longer to run.
Total running time will be the same on prolonged usage.
TL;DR:
Don't do this.

Volatile Directory - 80MB

Hello Guys,
Today I installed a cab to my phone. Usally I have around 100MB free on my device. But today there where only around 10MB?
I searched around and found a mysterious directory in the Application Data directory called "Volatile" which exactly eats up the missing space...
I said to myself, mhh are you trying to move that directory to storage card and risk a hard-reset? I did it and my device still works.
But I want to know from where this directory "Volatile" came?!
Scilor
the app data\volatile folder is a system temp folder. clearing shouldn't be a problem (unless maybe you clear it before restarting after installing something, perhaps).
You can also reg edit the location to move it to your storage card, at
hklm\system\filesys and change the path.
Thank you, so what exctly it is for?

its the wm5 and above equivalent of \temp in wm2003. just somewhere the system dumps files, especially when installing and such like. so long as nothing is running when you do, just empty it now and again.
Keep it off!
As for the HD2 - you may NOT delete this folder!
Reason for my frequent hardresetting in the past was deleting this folder - directly or by third party apps to gain storage space.
If you did so - your phone won't be able to recognize soundformats - it won't ring or play anything after deleting this folder!
Cover arts will be skipped very fast, because sense thinks that tracks are played in no time. Very frustrating bug.
Discovered it this morning ... and wanted to share it with the community as none knows about that.
I never had a problem with this, I only deleted the content. But thank you for that info.
So I will now just move the files to my SD card
I emptied it regularly when I was on winmo, never had a problem.

[Q] Internal Storage Low?

Before anyone asks, yes I did search the forum and didn't quite find any thread with my answer, hence my posting..
I just got a warning that my phone's internal storage is low. So, I was looking at the Android System Info App and it is showing only 53M of storage capacity remaining. I then was browsing through my apps and there's no way that there is that much storage being used, so what is taking up all of this space and more importantly, how can I find out? I tried looked around in astro and root explorer and I cannot find anything obvious.
Any suggestions or has anyone run into the same problem? I have around 115 apps installed....maybe less than that.
Thanks for any suggestions or thoughts..
::EDIT::
Looking in Root Explorer under /system/app it says:
184.75MB used, 167.88MB free....
So, its not the apps...Any thoughts? thanks again.
Try DiskUsage, from Market
DiskUsage provides a way to find files and directories on storage card which consume a lot of space.
It displays diagram on which directories are displayed proportional to their size, also a few levels of subdirectories are displayed.

Are you using the stock email app? If so, delete data in settings - applications - email. It stores a lot of data. Try it.

Trying to understand file system

I use Solid Explorer and am not rooted. When I look at ways to get to a "file" at root, I see:
Root/sdcard/file
Root/storage/sdcard0/file
Root/storage/emulated/legacy/file
Root/storage/emulated/internal memory/file
Root/mnt/sdcard/file
Why so many and what does it all mean? Can I delete any of the folders? Any of them open in my browser if the file is an html file with file:///

I would not recommend trying to delete any of the folders; most of them are basically symlinks, and deleting them will NOT reclaim storage. As to understanding the filesystem after the move to 'multi-user android 4.2', I have problems in that aspect myself. Indeed, on my (rooted) nexus, I have difficulties in getting my folders visible for other applications (where on 4.1 they were very visible indeed).
As one of the cracks on this forum, Chainfire, who releases the StickMount app, has similar problems (he has not been able to make StickMount work yet on Android 4.2), I guess there are some real questions out there.
Chances are, within the next few days or weeks, more is known about the way the filesystem is working, and perhaps tips as how to make it better will come floating about.
For now though, I would just "sit still" if I were you, and just ignore all the other ways, and just use one of them.
(And which one? I guess I would go for /sdcard/file myself...
Kind regards,
Roel
Happy I'm not the only one. Before the update "Root/storage/sdcard0/file" seemed to be the path. Now it looks like each app chooses it's path randomly. I would guess many developers are pulling their hair out (or cursing Google)
I think I've got my head round the symbolic links but can't, along with tcat007, understand the reasoning. Another question that I hope is proper here is "How does Windows 8 (and earlier) decide what is "Internal Storage" - I've got a subdirectory that can be seen through either the sdcard or storage paths but will not display in W8.

Internal storage

I am developing a graphical password for android phones. After clicking on certain points on an image, the pixel positions should get stored in the internal memory of the phone or in a file, so that next time the user signs in, the values that the user puts can be compared with stored values. The values stored should not get erased. How do i go about this? Any function? ( Developing in eclipse)
You 'll find your way through surface view and open gl es it can provide x y cordinates of piont of touch see developer.android.com

First of all, welcome to XDA!
Second, you may want to take a look at http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/data-storage.html. I do not recommend writing the coordinates to a file on the internal/external storage of a phone (unless encrypted somehow) because anyone could easily look at it. Hope this helps!
Thanks all. I used sqlite / database handler.. helped me

So you put the coordinates into a database?
Well, you can also look up all values from a sqlite database: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.andsen.asqlitemanager
Encrypt them.
yeah..put them in database, once u pull the file from the device, i can read it using the sqlite browser.. Its working fine for the application. Encryption yet to be done. Just a novice

I think that encryption is important. Check this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2430412/what-java-library-should-i-use-for-cryptography

Internal almost Storage full. How to access more folders internal storage

I've been searching for this answer with no positive fix. I have around 20gigs being used up somewhare. This same thing happened on my old s7. I've cleaned cache in settings in phone and cleaned again useing cc cleaner. Nothing really changed. I need to find a app to look deeper into my internal storage whare the ghost data is being stored. I have tried useing total commander, disk info, disk usage, storage analyzer+disk useage, amaze file manager and x-plore but none of these seems to go deep enough into internal storage files/folders. Any one have a app or program they can reccomend. Or a known fix.
I'll post ss of what I'm looking at
Looks like I need 10 posts to post link of my screen shot links. Unless there's another way to upload here from phone gallery?

Do you have Whatsapp installed ?
Whatsapp stores all the media files in the internal storage. If you have Whatsapp installed, then you can try clearing the Whatsapp/Media folder in the internal storage
No I just use line app from time to time. Does it store similar to WhatsApp?
I was thinking root explorer might be able to find the hidden folders but I'm not rooted and would hate to run the risk or of bricking phone trying to root just to try out a app unless someone knows for sure root explorer would work. Or a similar app that does not need root access. But I'm kinda thinking I will need to be rooted to unlock the hidden folders to view them.
