Hello
Can anyone tell me if I get a plan with Verizon 1 gb plan? Is text free or do they charge for each text you send or recv?
Thanks for any help.
It is free text messaging through Google Voice.
You would have to purchase a separate text plan from VZW. They asked me when I purchased my Galaxy Tab if I wanted I text plan. I declined, but I believe it is possible. You can send / receive messages, but looks in my Verizon account like it will cost $0.20 each... which could add up quickly.

I am considering changing from Sprint CDMA Hero to the T-Mobile Vibrant, and think I saw an app once on the android market that would let me send and receive SMS/MMS messages using the Data plan and save me the $10 a month for the specific SMS plan.
I'd love to save money and hope someone can answer my question.
Thanks!
Text plus is awesome. It's free and it let's you send txts via WiFi or data plan. But no mms yet.... Who knows maybe the devs working on doing that. Heck you can even call with just a data plan. There's a bunch of texting or VoIP apps for Android which is amazing. So with the $10 data plan you should be good. Just try it out and if not you can still text via WiFi.

Google voice does this too.

Thanks for the replies.
Can you give me some help regarding how to setup google voice to handle my text messaging and ensure that I do not get charged by tmobile for texts sent AND received.
I saw a setting in Google voice where it says to notify me of voicemails via text message.......does this send a text to my cell number? If so, then tmobile will charge me for every text received.
In addition - I have many friends who will choose to text me, and I don't see how either Google Voice or Text Plus can manage the incoming new text message as default? My friends will often use my contact details in their phone to text me, so it will come directly to my cell number, so I don't see how Test Plus can intercept the text before the default phone app does? Then I get charged by tmobile (they charge for incoming and outgoing text).
Help appreciated....
I want to avoid being charged by tmobile for text messaging.
When you want to use Google Voice to text, you have to give your friends your google voice number to send their text messages to. You can text using the Google Voice app for android. Just disable notifications of voicemail via text message to avoid that problem.
Unforunately, you can't do MMS with google voice. And if they text your contact number, the regular one for your phone, you will get charged for hit.
Hope that helps.
hurrpancakes...thanks for the reply.
This clears things up nicely.
I think I will give tmobile the $10 a month for unlimited text.....I sometimes text friends overseas, so it has that benefit.
Does anyone know of an SMS app that prevents text conversations from appearing on the cell bill
check out google voice if you want to keep your txt hid this is the way to go
your text msgs show up on the bill?
Does this mean if you send 1000 text msgs, you'll get like 100 pages worth of your conversations?
yes..I get my bill paperless now but it is still crazy long...I use about 5000 texts a month...
LOL. I bet ur girlfriend loves it...
Wow I never knew a cell company actually prints out your text convo's... Just for future reference, What company are you with?
Google voice is definately the way 2 go and just download the GV apps available here in xda.
...the google voice showed up on the billl as an 800 #...thats ok...im is cool....
I get a paperless from at&t it just lists the phone # time and is the mms/sms was "sent" or "recieved"...thanks for the suggestion though
I use Google Voice since I have unlimited data and don't have unlimited messaging ($20 per month, 24 months, that's almost an off-contract phone!). However, Google Voice's SMS widget looks like crap. Is there any way to make the HTC messaging app send from the GVoice number? I don't want to send through my own number since that costs money.
Thanks.
Anybody?
I wonder if there is a way to integrate GoSMS or some other third party text app to work with Google Voice.
Wasn't quite sure where this would go in the forum. Feel free to move it Mods.
I recently purchased a Nexus 4 from the Play Store and started a Monthly4G prepaid plan through T-Mobile. Everything works perfectly except for Google Voice. I add the T-Mobile number to the forward settings in Voice and it sets up calling just fine, but when I attempt to send text messages I get nothing but messages being "queued." I attempt to view messages in my inbox on the device I get an error saying "Network Error." Ever since adding this number I haven't been receiving notifications for new texts in Growl Voice and the Google Voice website doesn't load my inbox or settings either. Any ideas?
Thank you.
Hey guys, I have been researching this a bit but I can't seem to find a clear explanation of the process. I am currently on an AT&T post-paid plan and would like to ditch AT&T and migrate to the T-Mobile $30 pre-paid plan. I currently use Google Voice for voicemail and would like to continue to do so. I have heard that because T-Mobile's pre-paid plans do not support conditional call forwarding, Google Voice will no longer be able to intercept calls and route voicemails through its service. To get around this, I was thinking of porting my AT&T number to my Google Voice account and then adding my new T-Mobile prepaid number as one of the devices GV routes calls to. GV charges 20 dollars to port, but I would be willing to do it if it means I can continue using it's voicemail features. My question is, does anyone see any problems that may arise with going this route? Basically, my gameplan looks like this: Initiate a port of my current number to Google Voice, activate T-Mobile pre-paid plan, link T-Mobile pre-paid number to Google Voice. I would then set the Google Voice app to handle all calls and texts. Did I miss anything? I know this is not related specifically to the Nexus 4 but I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to offer.
Also, how will MMS be handled if I choose do pursue this?

This was my plan too, but MMS doesn't seem to go through using this. Doesn't get forwarded to email, and the sender doesn't get any notification. As far as voicemail, that should work if you disable tmo voicemail. But you might want to test before. Or maybe another user has advice...

I remember calling T-Mobile a while back and they would not disable my voicemail. Because of that, it's hit or miss as to which mailbox the message will go.
Can't help with MMS...don't use it.
If I were to go with the Straight Talk $45 prepaid plan, would I encounter similar problems with voicemail? If Straight Talk supports forwarding (allowing GV to handle voicemail) I wouldn't need to port my number to GV and could basically continue with the same set up I currently have with the GV app handling voicemails and the phone handling the rest.
I did what you are suggesting, during my 3 weeks on the T-Mobile 30 plan. (I dropped it because the voice - never mind data -coverahge is too spotty in my home area.)
The calls and Google voicemail worked well. I called T-Mobile to deactivate its voicemail without any problems.
Can't comment on MMS, since I never use it.
Text messages did not showed up on the SMS clients, though I got them forwarded to my Gmail. Not sure if this had anything to do with my GVoice settings, though I didn't see any obvious culprits.
