Outlook on android? - Vibrant General

Can i do this.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

yes you can

Outside of manufacturer provided solutions (like HTC Sync, maybe Kies if you can get it to work correctly) and third party applications, no.
Android doesn't support Desktop ActiveSync/WMDC and you can't drag/drop Outlook data to USB Mass Storage.
Best thing to do is move everything to Google or Sync this data to the phone using Exchange ActiveSync.

[Q] Using the Dash 3G on a mac?

Hi all I am new to windows mobile 6.1, well windows mobile period.I have a Macbook and do not have windows on a desktop available at all, which is really starting to bug me. I love this phone but have no real way of using it for what I would like, one of my biggest problems is that I cannot mount it as a USB drive on my mac and therefore have no way of transferring large files to my sdcard. I have tried bluetooth, but cant get it to work right and the only solutions I can find for mounting are $40+, money I really cant spare just to connect the phone to my computer. Any solutions or suggestions, thanks all in advance.
I am also a Mac user (most of the time). Here are some tips:
-I take photos directly to the storage card and just pop it out to transfer them to the Mac. When you plug the card into a regular USB card reader, it will mount.
This way you can also transfer large files back and forth.
Yes you have to take to back off, it's annoying I know.
-I have a corporate Exchange account so there is no need for me to sync locally. I never do. All my organizer data is synced over the air.
BUT if you need to sync it, there are a few choices:
-Buy "Missing Sync".
-Sync over the air to your Google account. Google now gives you OTA Activesync. There are also tools to sync your Mac into your Google account. Basically Google becomes your master DB.
-No experience with this, but I bet there are WiFi network sharing utilities. That could be another way.
-Bluetooth File Exchange is also available (though a bit slow).
Look at the Mark Space Missing Sync programme for mac, it will sync everything and allow you to mount the memory card if you wish.
there's also an apps called SyncMate for mac.,

Though without the pro version, no way to copy programs.
search wm5storage + install cab. your phone is now a mass storage.
HTC makes a program called HTC Sync, Its for MACs to sync HTC Devices, I believe it is still free

[Q] Mac sync development/status

Warning Will Robinson!!! I am not a developer, nor am I all that smart, so please bear with me on this.
I am considering getting the Vibrant through TMO, but I need to confirm a couple things and I bet folks here can help me out with answers simple enough for a 3rd grader to understand.
First - What is "rooting"? What does it mean, what do you get out of it (especially for a non-technical guy like me) and how complicated is it?
Second - The Vibrant is capable of tethering, but only through USB, correct? Is there some update that is on the horizon that allows wireless tethering? Or is there some app already out there that enables that function?
Third - Can the Vibrant sync with Mac OS X/Microsoft Entourage? Or is there an app in development to do that?
Any comments of a simple nature are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Missing Sync ans SyncMate
I am currently using Missing Sync from Mark/Space and it seems to work pretty well. The calendar and Notes Sync are tied to their own Fliq software on the device. I don't use these as our Exchange server is all I use to keep sync'd. But it does work well for iTunes and folder sync. The sync with Missing Sync is directly between the Mac and the Android device. Think iPod.
Some additional features of Missing Sync are a Ringtone creator and bluetooth/wireless sync.
SyncMate support for Android was also recently announced. Their solution is to sync back to the Google cloud and then have your Android device sync from the cloud. The Expert version will allow syncing of iTunes and folders and such.
ok so the answer to my third question is yes, with Missing Sync, correct? I don't care about syncing music, videos, etc - just contacts, email and calendar.
The other thing you mentioned through Google is not desirable for me.
Thanks.
Rooting gives you administrator access on your phone. This allows you to so all kind of useful stuff and allows you to use many programs that require administrator access. If you are an advanced, power user though, you probably don't need it... Unless you wasn't wireless tethering.
If the vibrant can tether via usb out of the box, that is news to me. Though I guess it might be possible, since my vibrant does show up as a modem on my mac.

I was new to rooting when I got this phone, and it went very smoothly for me following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723479
With root you can, among other things, remove unneeded apps like telenav that were installed by Samsung/Tmobile; you can wireless tether (haven't tried it, not sure how well it works); and you can install custom ROMs like Cyanogen when they are released for this phone.
FYI, on a Mac the phone won't show up in Finder unless you enable USB debugging (Menu>Settings>Applications>Development>check Enable USB debugging).
Also, Android 2.2 allows wireless tethering, and is supposed to be out for the Vibrant this fall as a wireless upgrade.
@ texaslonghorn1 -
Please, note, SyncMate allows you syncing Contacts and Calendar between Mac and Android for absolutely free - uou are welcome to try it!
You can find detailed How To about Mac and Android sync here http://mac.eltima.com/sync_mac_android.html
You can configure your address book on the Mac to sync w/ google. Now you have best of both worlds cloud & desktop back-up. As far as media I'm thinking doubletwist, I haven't used it yet but looks really good because it loads iphoto and entire itunes library (not just playlists), and the UI is not bad either.

Regarding Mac/Google address book syncing, I tried this via preferences and there was no option to sync to Google - only yahoo and one other, mobileme I think, maybe it was something else. Google definitely was not there for me though.
A quick Google search on the issue revealed some permissions hack's which I applied to no avail. Running leopard 10.5.something (whatever the latest is) on a G5 ppc.
As for me, I was resistant to the Google cloud as well when I bought my vibrant, but it seemed the best option for syncing without buying additional software.
I kicked my address book out via a csv file (using address book to csv exporter) and imported to Gmail, then synced ical to my Google calendar via ical prefs and that was it.
I'm pretty happy with this setup and am enjoying using the Google services. The calendar sync is working well between ical, my phone, and my google calendar, now if I can just find a way to keep an ongoing address book sync I will be all set and a very happy camper.

[Q] Outlook Sync with current android builds

Can anyone recomend a working method for syncing my android HD2 with outlook as this is a key feature for me if i want to run android FT.
Mine syncs without any problem through my exchange account. As far as anything special to do it I use all the same settings as I did in WinMo. Works like a charm.
Are you having trouble at a specific step?
Sent from my Android HD2 via XDA app
It's not possible to Sync directly with USB as far as I know...not easily anyway.
What I did was install "Google Calendar Sync" and sync my Outlook with my Gmail account. This can sync Outlook to Gmail on a schedule so it stays updated.
Then in Android, sync with my Gmail account.
gsyncit
i use gsyncit, which syncs calendar, tasks, notes and contacts. it's not free, but very good. since this solution i didn't use winmo again...
SYncMyCal
SyncMyCal for me. Not free again but allows update to my Google account and works well. Haven't use ActiveSync or whatever it is called now for months....
Android-Sync ( PRE-ALPHA )
Exchange is the best way. Microsoft is supposed to be adding Exchange/ActiveSync to Live accounts. Some accounts already have access. Bing it.
Until you are migrated try gsyncit. , I use gsyncit for my kid's accounts and it works rather well.
Sent from my HD2 via XDA App (mattc 1.5 build)
I have the configuration below and it seems to offer syncing of contacts, calendar, and mail. However, i have a large contact database and so uploaded it to GMail to sync instead. Still, I'll look at these recommendations to see if they will work better. Right now, USB isn't working in most HD2 builds so the point is moot...
I found Android-Sync works for me. Very basic interface, but it's free ...and it actually does the job!
Guys, I use "Android PC Suite v1.3.1.7" google it.
During install it installs USB drivers so connect is possible and working.
Prog on chinese but tapping on the left upper corner and choosing third line in menu you can switch to english.
Then - Managment-Contacts-Import from Outlook. That it.
It is already released to PC Suite For Android V1.5.8.98 and you can download update here or autoupdate the old one.
http://download.pandaapp.com/?app=soft&controller=android&action=show&f_id=1892
pcsuite_for_android_1.3.1.70 would not run correctly under 64bit Windows 7. After installation, launch the EXE and then Windows says that the program shut down. Then, a process attempts to download an update which then fails with a timeout error.
pc suite thing does not work for me. i used energy android
I've confirmed that PC Suite For Android V1.5.8.98 allows me to transfer my Outlook contacts from my PC directly to my phone. My phone is running the FroyoStone build.
I was not able to transfer calendar items in this manner as I received a message that said a calendar connector was not installed.
Please note that the transfer of contacts does not appear to be a sync. During an experiment, I transferred one contact from Outlook on my PC to my phone. Then, I modified the contact on my PC. Next, I re-transfered the contact from my PC to my phone. The software detected a conflict and then created a duplicate record on my phone.
I think however that this software is a great work-around for folks who need to transfer contacts from Outlook on their PC to their phone without having to use their Google account.
Thanks to arturw for this suggestion.
I am using Froyostone V1 and Exchange syncs perfectly over the air without adding any app or widget. Guess Sense adds this? Why would you need usb sync?

Just tried zImage from 22.08 and HTC Sync v2.0.33 with Windows 7, but HTC Sync does not work at all. It does not see HD2.
Can someone confirm it works?

Go Android PC Suite
This is a fantastic application if you can handle the bad translations into English and the odd Chinese character. Does everything I need including Syncing APK's etc etc.
I am running [RE-BUILD][23.08.2010][mattc Leo+Froyo w/Sense 1.5b] w/1GB Data+Led+OC by Caedanne. It has been working like a treat.
Now with Android PC Suite I will shortly be able to tweak the phone and post my first Android Home Screen.
I am a convert
I set up my WM ROM with MS exchange and it imported the settings across when I booted up Haret. Therefore my Android is always up to date with the server list of contacts, calendar appts and email. It does however mean running MS Exchange which is not everyone's cup of tea.

Companion Link - Android Sync

I had been searching for a way to sync my work calendar in Outlook 2007 to Google properly so I can get my work calendar on my phone. Everything I tried would only sync meetings, appointments, etc. which I had created, and not items I had been invited to, or which were created by other people. The following software did a 1st class sync of my contacts and calendar:
CompanionLink
I am still using the trial which is 100% functional for 14 days, and it seems to do exactly what I needed. Thought I would share this with you. It's expensive to buy after trial, but if it continues to auto sync OK for me, I will be buying it.
If its a work calendar, I am assuming they use Exchange. Why not connect to the Exchange server directly?

Can't, company blocks Android ATM because it's not secure enough, otherwise I would do that. If you have BB or iPhone you can connect to exchange..........Android phone is SOL until possibly 3.0.
<edit> That's for company I work for and not a general statement. Every form of media I use from laptop HDD to thumb drives is encrypted.
I can't post a link but you can try syncing your outlook with google calendar. search for "sync with Microsoft outlook" on the Google calendar help and you'll find it quickly. a small little software that does magic!
or search for "Google Calendar sync" software...

Same with the company I work for so I use Google Calendar sync and it works perfectly.
I did use Companion Link initially, and actually they will even return your money if you decide that you don't need it within 90 days (don't remember exactly) . It is very useful if you sync Tasks, contacts, etc with Outlook, similar to what DM does for BB or Active Sync for WM.
If you want just the calendar then go for the Google Calendar Sync.

If you read the OP you would see I am offering up a way to do this, not asking how to do it! This software runs on my laptop and does sync Outlook with Google calendar! The Google sync application doesn't work worth a snuff.

Google's calendar sync isn't very good, and is poorly supported. I agree with you regarding Companion Link, and it has worked flawlessly for me since I started using it.
Thanks for sharing your experience CaelanT!
I've heard a lot good things about CompanionLink but can anyone confirm if there is a lag in opening the Deja apps (i.e., DejaContacts, DejaCalendar)?
Since you're not using the native contacts or calendar on your device, can you simply remove these icons from your homescreen and replace them with the CompanionLink DejaContacts?
Well, Google Calendar Sync works perfectly well for me!

Google has come out with a new version since I originally posted this. It still does not sync my meetings correctly. There are several known issues with this and outlook, exchange, meeting room manager, etc.

We do not use Exchange, but I do use Outlook on my desktop. I use funambol to sync calendar & contacts (inc photos), both ways. It has options to sync files too. You need a client on the PC/laptop running Outlook and an Android client.
It's free so maybe also worth considering.
I want to be able to sync between the Atrix and my PC, without going to Google Calender. I don't trust Google's contacts and calenders since I have read so many issues with them. Plus they are on the net, which means they can be hacked.
I will have to try CompanionLink and Funambol. When I initially set up Google Contacts from my old phone (Tilt) to the Android via Google, they got really scrambled. It was done at the store using their standard automated routine. So now I am real leary of Google's Calender and Contacts.
I tried many of these sync programs. I use tasks and notes, beside contacts and calendar. Just about evey program I found had issues. I finally found VCOrganizer Pro. It is a nice little package. It has it's own contacts, calendar, tasks and notes applications. It syncs with it's own applications and the native Google contacts and calendar applications also if you desire. It will sync with more than one PC and keeps the items seperate. This is great for people who like the seperation. I however like to keep the contacts and calendar in sync on both my personal and work PCs. I contacted Vecal about this and they said this is an improvement they are working on now and should be out soon. Right now, I sync my Atrix with my home PC and use my old Windows Mobile phone to keep my home PC in sync with my work PC, Once Vecal let me sync with both PCs and keep both in sync, it will be perfect.

own ftp for cloud storage

Not sure if anyone can help me out here (as its not just android related) but i´m looking for a way to use my own ftp as the storage space for syncing over the cloud. Something like dropbox but using my own ftp server. Should work on windows & android to sync music, notes, documents,...
So i need a software that:
support syncing over the cloud for android & windows with serveral different files.
Thanks
I am also looking for an app like this...
using titanium backup and media sync to backup right now in combination with drop box... Still, I prefer using a different cloud provider or a own ftp...
Is there any useful program ?
