And now with froyo there is the router-wifi option, so the question, is there any adittional cost when use that? I mean with vodafone unlimited plan should charge us?
wtf, noone wonders for this?
We should charge U for stupid questions!
Explain me this... how the hell could they possibly know that you are running Wi-Fi hotspot??? Besides if it is an unlimited plan it prolly means that it has no limits regarding the traffic...
Well let's see, if they offer a plan for 15-20 euros more per month and it gives you the possibility to use the smartphone like a modem to connect your pc to internet, i understand that they can figure out something, no?

I did a quick search on this and couldn't seem to find anything pertaining to this partciular topic, but I assume someone has thought of it before... I apologize in advance if this has been asked already.
I have a Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard) and currently am paying the 40$/month for Media Max Unlimited... What I'm wondering is if it's possible to use the 20$/month "SmartPhone Connect Unlimited" plan with this phone? I know Cingular claims that it only works with the Cingular 2125, Audiovox SMT5600, and Motorola MPx 220; however, I was wondering if it was possible to basically trick them into thinking you have one of those phones, hense getting unlimited internet for 20$ instead of 40$.
I hope this thread isn't against any rules, in which case please delete
I did some research into this a while back, and from what I got, it's possible, but risky.
From what I hear, they'll slap a lot of overage charges and stuff on you unnecessarily.
I don't remember how to do it, but it's taking a chance. You may save 20/mo, but you risk having to pay more each month in extra charges. In the end, it's up to you if you think it's worth the risk.
you can but
Hi,
you could switch o the cheaper plan, but if you go over the alloted MB's per month you might get an overage charge @ i think0.10/kb. If you keep it under the alloted amount then go for it, but you will rack up the KB's in no time. Better to be safe than sorry and end up with a larger bill.
Great, thanks for the info! Anyone have any personal experiences in trying this? (good or bad)?

Sweet. Any do's and don'ts for this? And do you know the process for doing so?
Anyone else have any more info on this? =)
I have a 8925 tilt and my plan is the $20 unlimited internet access with 200 txtmsg. works fine. if you want unlimited txtmsg is $30.
Do you know the name of this plan?
Switching from Media Max Unlim to Smart Phone Unlim will rid you of your Unlim TXT msg'ing if you choose to do so...but I'm sure you knew that . If you don't need your unlimited texting, I'd suggest just dropping down to the Media Max 200, it's the same price as Smart Phone Unlim with 200 txt msgs and will get you unlim surfing.
ANY of the unlimited data plans will work with ANY phone. You can even tether you PC and it will work. at&t doesn't have much of a audit system in place to monitor people that are not using the correct data plans. From what I can tell, mostly excessive data usage patterns are the only thing that will throw a red flag.
Think of it like paying to eat at a buffet. You have an adult price, and child price. Your PDA phones are suppose to pay the adult price (aka PDA plans), and regular phones pay the child price (aka Media Max or Smartphone plans). The only problem is, if you get caught eating at the buffet on a child’s price, you are liable to get slapped with some huge data charges.
It's up to each individual if they what to take that risk. I for one can't. I tether A LOT. So I pay the $59 for a Data Connect plan. I NEED to have internet for business reasons. One job for me programming some controllers can net enough to pay for a years worth of Data Connect. Those of you who use it for recreational purposes will find it hard to justify the expense.
Alright, so I have a Fuze. I assume I have "PDA Personal", which doesn't have a data cap. So... why do the others have data caps? Because of tethering?
With windows mobile wifi router, I can connect laptops to my phone for internet... so why is tethering important? Tethering seems like it'd be more complicated.
And what are these horror stories of people getting outrageous charges on their phone bill from roaming data charges? How concerned should I be about my bill being very large one day?
I don't know.
AT&T is full of ****.
I used to have a Motorola v9 and I used the MediaNet Unlimited plan that's $15 a month. When I got my HTC Fuze they switched me to the PDA Personal plan that's $30 a month WITHOUT TELLING ME!
I called and they said that because of the device I'm using I need to have the PDA Personal plan... So I called back until I got a really nice lady and told her I switched back to my old phone and I would really appreciate if I could get my old data plan back. She switched it for me and it works exactly the same as the PDA Personal plan only I'm now paying half the price.
I repeat AT&T is full of ****. ALL of the data plans do the SAME EXACT THING. The only difference is the prices and the data caps. So my advise is to just trick them into switching you to the MediaNet Unlimited like I did.
People do that all the time - but should I? Can I get in trouble? I don't really know what to do. I'd love to pay less - especially since it's 10 dollars a month now - but I don't know how. Some people say to put your SIM in a non-PDA phone first.

Well I haven't got in trouble... they haven't noticed yet and I got mine the day the Fuze was available. If they call me out on it I'll just plead ignorance. They did ask for my IMEI when I had it switched. I'm not sure if that allows them to verify if you have a PDA phone or not but I just put my SIM in my old Motorola v9 and gave them that one.
It's and unlimited plan and since both phones can tether over Bluetooth I can use just as much data on either phone. I don't see any reason I should have to pay twice as much just because the Fuze is PDA.
I have used about 700mb tethering my mt3g to my laptop. And need to tether about 1gb more. Am i going overboard? This is my first month having the phone so i dont have a pattern of internet useage yet. I really just want to know if this much useage will draw attention to my account. If this isnt considered alot what is? Thx.
I am pretty sure that T-Mobile is out of the "Stone Age" with their charging of serious usage. Lol.
Figuratively, the cannot charge for anything too significant. Especially considering, UNLIMITED actually means unlimited! Lol. You're in the clear, I use tethering all the time.
thank's dude thats what i was hopeing to hear. Didnt want to go overboard and get a massive bill.

Yes.. Unlimited suppose to mean unlimited but many times it's not such a clear as it seems. Many offers with unlimited options has a little text with * "fair policy apply" or sth like that or unlimited but only within their network/services. Once upon a time my uncle in England had unlimited internet in his mobile phone so via bluetooth i connected it to my laptop and using normally browsing web with very little downloads cuz I was careful and wanted to check it first. After about 2 weeks suddenly his phone has been blocked. He called asking WTF is going on. They sad his bill exceeded a limit. We had to pay 200 pounds (400$) bill for a stupid internet usage!!! It was my most expensive Internet browsing.... So if I were you I would stop for now and wait for the bill first to check is everything ok or call your operator asking for the balance..
PS. It was about 2 years ago but even now I see many offers for a wireless internet (usb dongle) via GSM that says UNLIMITED DATA TRANSFER only 35F/month but always at the bottom is very small "fair policy apply"...
read the terms and conditions, it states specifically what they are going to do if you exceed a limit.
The fine print does not state a limit. Only something along the lines of "unusual usage". It is ultimately up to them, but there wirelsess laptop stick data plan has a 5 gig cap on it, so 700 megs does not sound too bad to me.
the latest t&c states 10 gigs, and after that they slow your speed down.
Please respond here if you are using the portable wifi feature of your nexus one and getting any SMS or e-mail notification from AT&T that they want you to pay for tethering.
I hear stories about people who get the "unlimited" data plan and then straight up abuse it (by providing internet for their entire household), which is probably why this is happening.
150+GB a month is what I consider abuse btw.
I don't see why you should pay for tethering. I think its just another way for them to make more money. Maybe for some people they don't wanna pay to have a separate internet source when they can use their phones as their internet source. I don't tether since atm I don't have unlimited data lol.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
Should be free and only pay for data...just another reason why I left at$t years ago!
I have T-Mobile and as of right now my "unlimited" is still unlimited but once you exceed 5GB for the month is DRAMATICALLY slows down.
I just moved in to a new place with my wife and son and I'm trying to cut down on extra bills (I'm the only working parent right now) so I don't have internet, I just tether off my phone.
I just exceeded 5GB for the first time ever and its horrible. I'm moving so slow, on my phone that is, its unreal.

The only people getting flagged are iPhone accounts that are extreme abusers.
If you are abusing the service that much, then you should be paying for the higher package IMO.
I tether on my unlimited plan and have never had a problem, but I also don't abuse it. I barely break 1gb a month.

Because iOS's silly separate tethering config makes it easy to know exactly how much it's getting used. Not so simple on phones that route tethered data through the normal APN.
Yeah, I use tethering on my N1 on AT&T everyday and I haven't gotten anything from them yet. I don't abuse it, but where my house is, sort of in the woods (in Pennsylvania) where I can't get anything better than dial-up, so I use it just for basic email, Facebook, etc.
3UK now offer "all you can eat" data on Pay as you go. i plan to swap my T-Mobile SIM to my old 3 after this contract is up, i really hope the plan is still available then as i can see this being abused from day one!!
I tether my tablet to my phone almost daily, but it's pretty small usage. I am only using 300-400 megs a month on 3G now since AT&T took my unlimited away when they screwed with my account a while back. I mostly update or do stuff on wifi at home.

They don't allow tethering on PAYG. Same as Giffgaff, unlimited data without FUP, but no tethering.
I got a similar message from Cincinnati Bell Wireless, but they have not charged me. I don't really use tethering all that much.

Ah! cheers for that info
Doesn't mean they'll ever notice you doing it, of course
XDA is no longer worth my time.
What I am having trouble understanding is what evidence is at&t Mobility using to determine if one is tethering or not.
They have a few choices, but as far as I can tell, none of them are perfect and all will have false positives.
Dan
So I've been tethering in CyanogenMod on my Aria for about 18 months or more; then, just a few days ago, I get this letter from AT&T. What's ironic is that this is the only phone in my house with an actual AT&T smartphone data plan (currently $30/unlimited), the rest of the smartphones are non-AT&T devices (from Canada) and are on $10/unlimited dumbphone data. I occasionally tether on those and nothing has ever happened. Strange. Any idea how they figured it out?
uuhhh... yeah.
not too hard for them to do. all they have to do is look at the headers on the data packets sent over their network. if the header says "UDP"... they know it is tethering data.

The question is not can they (of which the answer is obviously yes, there are multiple methods including above) but do they, and if so, by what method. There is a long discussion over in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17858221 but it's difficult to say if any conclusion has been reached.
well they obviously do if you are getting charged for tethering, correct?
and of course they do. that is absurd to think they don't. how else would companies like sprint be able to charge for tethering? they need to know if you are doing it, and when, don't they? they monitor your data traffic every month (how much you use), so why wouldn't they, on occasion or if suspicious of something, look at the individual data packets being sent?
the answer is simply that they certainly do look at it. and not always will you get caught for tethering, but a buddy of mine had his sprint account suspended for tethering because he was using it to play xbox live.
the trick is to not run up 200+ mb of tethering data every day. you start doing it a lot, and you are more likely for them to investigate and find out what you are doing.. and they can easily do so.

The thing is that usage on this line has been approximately consistent over the past 18 months which mean something changed recently that triggered this for me and a flood of other customers. It's a shame, it seems like every single one of the carriers is working as hard as possible to stop customers from utilizing the unlimited data that they paid for in the manner they see fit.
it's pretty freaking lame, i know.
it will be a sad day for me when sprint stops offering unlimited data. it's bound to happen, i think....
i use at least 10gb of data a month. every ROM i download, over 4g, anything i download, done on my phone... plus i tether every now and then. but shhhh
if you have unlimited data, why do they care what you do with the data that YOU are paying for? it's annoying. just another way for them to make a buck, charge you with the cool feature of mobile internet.
ive never heard of sprint supsending an account for tethering he was probably roaming while he was doing it thats the clause u were talking about is when u go over 200mb daily of data roaming and its over a five month period before theyll send u a letter. but if your just tethering without roaming your fine with sprint.

ummm, no. not when you are using the tethering service when not paying for it. i think i wasn't too clear about that part.
he had been using the tethering service a lot... for xbox live, they caught him, he stopped doing it for a bit, then as soon as he did it again they suspended his account.
sorry man, but i was there. lol.
they will nip you if you aren't careful
im sorry but i have to call bs on that i was on sprint for months tethering around 20gigs a month and they never said a word and playing online does not use that much data at all when i was using it for my ps3 i could play mag and battlefield 2 all day long and barely use 150mb even with voice chat.
cool. well good for you. you got lucky. don't come in here saying i know this and i know that. he got his account suspended. not saying it will happen to you, just saying it happened.
why are all the verizon guys on here just a bunch of trolls. GTFO retard. act like you know anything.
"well it didnt happen to me, so it wouldnt happen to anybody else." ... idiot. that is the most ignorant statement i have ever heard.
