I cant wait until a rooted rom is available
How come the branded versions appeared first !!!
Don't understand this as well. My unbranded simlock free phone said that it's software up to date (1.31.405.5 ) despite trying to manually update...
Same here... Unbranded Legend, T-Mobile Croatia. No update on sight yet!

I'd imagine you're going to have to update to 2.03.405.3 before you can update to Froyo anyway...
But I also don't understand how branded ROMS can get an update first? That is despicable!

I'm also waiting for the corresponding file ....
2.03 is the software number for vodafone (i think) . Nobody in Poland was updated to 2.xxx and I don't think it's a requirement.

2.03 is the generic unbranded WWE rom. And if you didn't get the update to it (I didn't here in South Africa either, had to flash it myself), you can bet your ass they're not going to release a Froyo update for you either... You're going to have to do it yourself I think.

You may need to create a Goldcard and then you will have to run the RUU for 2.03.405.3 to update to latest version. Then only can you update to Froyo as I'm not sure if there is going to be an RUU for Froyo. Then after that you'll probably have to manually download the Froyo OTA update too (when it is released), rename it and put it on your SD card (think this is the process, anyone else care to elaborate?). Some of these steps are complicated, but search the forums - I can't post links yet it seems...
When could we expect the OTA will be released for other carriers and countries?

ok.
so, for OTA update, in each case we have to create a goldcard?
Aha, HTC had a deal with Vodafone. This sucks big time! They held back the update for the Vodafone customers to get it first and only then the full paying customers might get an update. Money rules! In my view HTC lost two points...

Nope, once you've made a goldcard once you won't have to again.

After installing the new 1.66 ROM, is it necesarry to install the peviously released hotfixe's, or are these already implemented in the newest ROM?
Already integrated.
Depending on your language, however, the latest SMS fix (of 24/01) has to be applied, too. If you are using a cooked rom with 1.66 base you'll also have to install the latest SMS hotfix.
Doesn't say it's for the UK WWE 1.66 ROM and it's not on the UK support page so not gonna bother unless it appears...I delete every SMS after reading anyway so never been an issue...
EDIT: OK, I lie it is there, didn't see it beneath the ROM update itself. Might give it a go, can't hurt can it?

If you are using the version they have in their support section, you as UK client don't need to apply it .
It is in the support page BUT if you click on the download button it goes back to the Support front end so guessing it's not needed as I've got the new ROM...

It normally states in the update which ROM it applies to. Which means that all of them (excluding the Valendar View) don't need to be applied to 1.66.
The only one which doesn't is the Calendar View update which says
"Note: This update is only applicable to all ROM Version" now I don't beleive this as they would surely apply it to a ROM.
Maybe someone else can help whith this one.

Yes, because the UK version has been released AFTER the SMS update, you are already good to go and fully updated. However, in other countries the ROM update came earlier and the new SMS fix is probably not in those yet.
Thanks for the help.
I'm on the Norwegian ROM, so i guess I'm ok then. (Sms update has been removed from HTC site after the ROM update came out.)

I second that. Send a mail to HTC yesterday to make sure the WWE rom update I was about to download already contained previous updates and they replied that it wasn't necessary to install them again. (It was in Dutch so that's why I'm not attaching the mail).
what version after hard-reset?
i have a question. I had update the ROM with the 1.66 version. If i now execute a hard-reset what version should i be with? 1.43 (original) or 1.66?

1.66 (if flashed officially).
and via HSPL?
HSPL = Hard (flashed) SPL so it will be 1.66 still..
Thanks!
Greetings to you all...
I apologise ahead of time, my noobness is about to show through...
I will be getting my HD2 on the 3rd from Phones4U with a Vodafone contract and will be wanting to do the ROM update to 1.66. I am wondering about the following things:
1. Has this gone wrong for anyone and should it go wrong what is the fix?
2. Having never done this before and not wanting to get it wrong - does the downloaded update have all the tools I need to do the update? Or is there a specific piece of software I need from HTC?
3. Tried to follow this thread regarding the new SMS update and am not sure regarding the outcome - if I am on ROM 1.66 do I need to do the SMS update as well?
Thanks in advance for all willing to answer what are probably basic question - this is my first real smartphone and I am keen beyond belief but also do not want to mess it up...
P.S. Is there a manual in the box? (ROLL ON WEDNESDAY!)
Scott (In anticipation)
Double post - sorry!
Hi,
I got my HD2 from Dial-A-Phone (Phones4U) and it was an unlocked version so all updates from HTC are available. It'll likely come with the 1.48 ROM on it so first thing to check is whether this is correct. Go into Settings>About phone>Software version and it'll be in there.
Assuming yu are on 1.48 then go to the HTC UK support site and download the ROM update from the 25/01/2010. The other updates are rolled into this so you don't need them.
HTC UK Support - HD2
Now, charge up your phone and connect to your PC. If using Vista/Windows 7 it should recognise it being a Windows Phone and connect up using the Windows Mobile Device Center. Once done, make sure it says connected and then run the ROM file (which is an .exe file) and follow the instructions.
If, however, the phone is already on 1.66 then nothing more is needed!!
Excellent - really appreciate your feedback - I am, for once, wishing my weekend away so that Wednesday will get here quicker...

Um.. sorry if this is a dumb question, but my Hero's version is 2.73.405.5 and that's the latest ROM Version according to htc.com/europe/
so.. is that version getting the update or is it just the 2.73.751.13 the Taiwanese version and 2.73.405.5 the European one and both are practically the same?
Hooraaay for 2.1 (party)
Update consists of series of binary patches, so probably it won't apply to anything but 2.73.751.13

It upgrades to (Android 2.1 3.31.751.1) from 2.73.751.13 OTA.
It's doubtful you'll be able to use the image as is from another ROM. But rooted users should be able to use a repacked version with no problem. It comes with a new radio, so care would have be taken to make sure there is no funkiness with current engineering SPLs.

First update to 2.73 will probably include some patches for the OTA client.
Not wanting to put a downer in this but haven't htc always told us we'll see a small ota update before the offical update to 2.1.
This sounds like it's taking them direct to 2.1

Im used to flashing nokias and iphones but this android is totally new to me so i want to do it properly.
Thanks for any help or links to the things i need and topics on this
P.s Or do people recormmend just updating though HTC Site ? ( although i wud want 2.2 on these when ever that becomes avail ) hehe

Its about time this update came out. I don't see why the Droid Eris got the update months ago yet the GSM Hero has take so much longer. This is the reason I sold my Hero and got a Desire.

Replace recovery.img and re-sign
I downloaded the rom. The script calls for the recovery.img to be updated. If somebody could replace /system/recovery.img with amon's recovery.img and re-sign with test keys, then rezip, I think we could be trying this puppy out in about 30 minutes...
Just remove the lines that update the recovery...
It will only apply to 2.73.751.13 or very similar ROM, because it consists mostly of binary patches.

It's update only, we need base ROM (2.73.751.13) to make full rom.
Not sure if this it true but thought it was worth posting anyway, I have been speaking with Orange techs everyday for this last week on another matter and have been periodically asking about the update for the hero.
This morning the agent said they got an internal update about it yesterday and we can expect an update to be rolled out starting 3rd July.
There is already a thread ** Official 2.1 UK UPDATE Thread ** .
Keep posts in the same area regards to this update then everyone can find it.
Dude he is talking about a carriers update not the generic one from HTC.
So I think a separate thread is a good idea

me three. You'll just get loads of orange rom threads appearing. No point in having a specific (potential) answer to a problem hidden away in a thread about the generic rom.
Me 4. I've been trawling through loads of posts to find Orange updates.
I have gone back to stock ready for the official Orange 2.1. I've had a variety of ROMs for 6 months, just want an official 2.1, as I've never been happy with stability of any, or there's always one thing that doesn't work.
Gav.
Does anyone know if we will have to have the newest orange rom to get part 1 of the update, (ROM Version:2.73.61.66 released on 2010-02-04).
I never bothered with it at the time as it didnt seem to actually do anything different from the ROM they released in November along with all the other rom updates, (Rom 2.73.61.5).

I can see the reasons for keeping everything together and normally I would agree, but as this nugget of info was specific to the Orange build and I thought a separate thread so Orange customers can see it would be more useful, burying it on page 50+ of a thread about the generic (and rooted ) build didn't seem the right place for it.

Yeah right!!!!!
It'll be out when Orange sign it off and finish filling it up with their crap.
As for whether you'd need the latest ROM? yes you would. FOTA updates are deltas and only work from the most recent ROM.
Good idea!
I am normally against fragmenting topics, but I agree, when it comes to Orange UK, the ROM updates are always a bone of contention!
I now own a HTC Desire but my partner has the HERO on Orange and I am waiting anxiously for this update to get cracking on making this phone useable again.
*** My question however is this: I have paid Orange to unlock the handset to any network. Will I still have to update with an Orange ROM or will I get the 2.1 update unbranded now?? ***

I dont think you will.
My contract is coming close to an end so will technically own the phone outright so I asked HTC if it were possible to flash their generic stock rom on the phone to remove the Orange branded version and they said its not possible and I will only be able to install roms provided by Orange on the handset.
I think its time to bite the bullet and get rooting...
After all this is the last chance to do it, if we install the official version we will be locked out forever and the Hero isnt going to be getting another official update after this one.

I can't understand why people are still hanging on. Rooting is well easy and the roms better than the official releases.
do you know?
i'm running my hero with modaco 2.8 rom
will i have to revert to the stock orange rom for the update?
sorry if this has already been asked i have been on nights all week and don't have the energy to read through all these threads
cheers people
Still Waiting...
I have a HTC Hero on Orange...
This whole thing is very frustrating to be honest!
I am a total noob when it comes to rooting, but I think i might just go ahead this weekend and put villain v12 custom ROM on my HTC Hero. Worth a shot¬!
Its taken them ni on a year to release this update, and when they finally release it, the people stuck on locked phones have to wait even longer!
Still, I really like HTC Devices and Google android is the shiz! So its all good!

If I were to root my Hero, would it be unlocked from the orange network? I've been researching all the methods before I jump in to rooting it, and I've come across people having to reflash to an orange rom because they weren't able to use their Hero after updating. I was looking at VillianROM 12, but I didn't want to do anything if I had to default back to Orange after my efforts. They have a wiki with step by step instructions, easy enough, I'm just kinda weary as I've never rooted before. All I want is the newest update and be able to use an O2 sim.
Although the update for the HTC legend is available and many have successfully updated their phone to version 2.05.405.2. I did not get this update!
I have contacted HTC support and they said:
"Dear Mr.Mrdja Thank you for contacting HTC. Kindly note that your device is up to date and there is no other ROM update available for the moment. Please check our website periodically and search for the latest updates. If you have any other inquiries , do not hesitate to contact us again. Please note that you can contact us via support line For further details, please go to http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx Thank you so much for using HTC products . It's down to the carrier (your telephone company) to release it is it not?

If it was branded! Unless I am mistaking?
If it's rooted, flashing an OTA would remove the root and then becomes more complicated to get it back (needs to downgrade back that 1.31 again)
So you may just want to flash it yourself with recovery/ClockWorkMod

I am aware of that but my question is why there is no OTA update for this release keys? My phone is not rooted.
same here, guys. Any solution? I have no OTA for 1.31.405.5 CL154058 release-keys ...
I have the same problem aswell. HTC support suggested a factory reset, but that didn't help.
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App

I don't understand, that makes no sense: the latest updates are only available for Asia and branded devices (vodafone) wtf!
And look the last one:
Checking update for 2.10.178.1...

How the hell can anybody have the 2.10.178.1 version if there's no OTA to get it... and no RUU...
I don't understand that stupid updating system...

2.10 is a Vodafone AU rom
1.31.405.5 is a WWE rom
Somehow, there's no upgrade path to get to 2.03.405.3
Kwen, thanks for the information.
I've contacted with HTC support and this is what they say:
Kindly be informed that the latest update released for your handset is the 1.31.X version, for the time being, there're no further upgrades for your handset, please note that the HTC Legend is one of the devices that received the Android 2.2 upgrade, however, for the time being, there's no information regarding its date of release.
Please note that the update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks’ time.”

I don't see the point of the branded devices getting updates that stock free devices don't get... very strange: I thought that first an official OTA update comes out and then each company modifies this update to put it's ****ty logos and shortcuts.
So... the latest WWE version is 2.03.405.3, but im still on 1.31.405.5 ... !!! WTF !??!
Is there a way to manually update my phone or something or some guide for RUU ... ?!
Froyo is on the way and i don't think i can get it without the latest update!!

For some reason there is no direct upgrade path from 1.31.405.5 to 2.03.405.3. The 2.03 RUU is here.
But at this point I have no idea which WWE versions they're going to release OTA updates for - because I'm assuming many people do not RUU their phones and are therefore still on 1.31 like you. Also some others are on the 2.05.405.2 ROM that was faulty and therefore that OTA update was pulled!
Thx dude !
hi guys,
I've done some research on this forum and found out (if I'm not mistaken) that HTC must have pulled the OTA update to 2.03 off their site because of the SMS bug. So basically there's no official (direct) way of updating from 1.31 to 2.03/2.05, if you want, you can still download the shipped one from shipped rom and flash it manually!
I'm considering waiting for froyo or updating my (rooted) 1.31 to (rooted) 2.03 though.

Why would you update to 2.03 instead of Froyo if your phone is already rooted? Check the Development section. There are several rooted Froyo ROMs out and you can still revert if you don't like it.
Wondering about 1.31.405.5 Froyo
Hello everyone,
I love this script on zubu.ca/legend/fota_check.php and I've lost the count on how many times I pressed F5 while on it, but still no luck for me.
I've got an HTC Legend (unbranded with carrier Vodafon). It's got build 1.31.405.5 (CL154058 RK) and according to the FOTA-checker there's no update available.
My question is basically: Why is there no update, and do I need another update before I get the Froyo update? I know HTC stated that every Legend will have Froyo by the 5th of december and it's not the 5th yet. But still, many Legends have it already and like I said I'm bad at waiting XD
Thanks in advance.
