Hello,
as WP7 doesn't let you see your mac address, it may be impossible to be connected with wifi to your router if you enabled a mac address filter.
It happened to a member of my family, so I had to find how to resolve it, and here's how, for any people who would need it :
You must access the hidden Samsung Diagnostic Mode : go to the PHONE menu, type ##634#
Now that you are in the diagnostic mode, type : *#1234#, and here you are !
I hope it's gonna be usefull.
Thank a lot.
I come from the *Other well known mobile OS that is not iOS* world and I test this phone for a week.
I don't like it at all... Why is that so complicated to get the Mac adress?

I'm running WP7.5 and you can find it in Settings>System>WiFi>click on the router you're connected to for further options>scroll down to Edit Network>Mac Address (at the very bottom)

** make sure that you have windows xp pro**
1. download this file onto your pda and run it.
2. make sure that if you are using a router the you open up port 3389... it has to be this port and no other
3. on your desktop goto start/settings/control panel/system/remote and click the box that says "allow users to connect remotely to this computer", that is it you don't need to click anything else
4. open up the program and type in your ip address without the port number then username and password - which must match your windows login and password.

All good advice but this may not work if your office PC is behind a firewall / your office network uses Network Address Translation or you need a VPN to access the network. Give it a go and see what happens but if the IP address of your office PC starts 10.0.0 or 192.168 or similar, it is unlikely to work. You will then have to use a remote access service.

Also if your IP's range anywhere within 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, the you're behind a firewall.

If you're just using 3G/HSDPA you shouldn't have any problems connecting.
If you've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address (like mine with Virgin Media) Just register and download the NO-IP software (www.no-ip.com - it's free) then instead of typing in your Ip address on RD you'll put "....no-ip.biz" - or whatever they assign you.
As already stated you HAVE to open up port 3389 on your router and assign it to the relevant pc. This number you will find by entering "ipconfig" in the cmd window. Be aware that if your router gets turned off you could find that the IP address of your computer changes, so you'll have to go back into your router settings and change it to the new ip address for that pc.
I've tested RDP on XP Pro, Media Center 2005 and Vista. I found it to be a little better when the host was a Vista pc - whether this is my imagination or because it is designed with Vista in mind I don't know.

Of course, this only applies if you are not behind a corporate firewall using NAT or other dynamic IP behind the firewall. Also, if it is a corporate network, opening port 3389 may be (a) very difficult to convince your IT dept to do and (b) not very secure!
If one iof the dynamic dns systems works for you, you might try dyndns.org
hello everyone, im a newbie to remote desktop and want to setup my u1000 to conect to my workstaion via wifi and internet as well. i just recently upgraded my u1000s rom ap3.
i could realy use your help pros..
u guys can also direct me to some link to useful info on settngs..
or any other replacement for remote desktop..
im sorry if thess silly questions doesnt needed a thread...
but i desperatly need the settings, as buy u1000 was one of my main praioriities
pls do help me frnds...
thanx in advance..
im no pro but i have it working here!
First off,to use it over the internet you need to make some adjustments on the pc end unless you have a static ip.
got to somewhere like no-ip.com register and d/l the software so you have a way of naming your dynamic ip.
Then you need to ensure that the allow remote connections is enabled on the pc and that your routers ports are forwarded if they need to be(mine did).
Then you should be able to enter the name of your ip (from no-ip.com) and password to logn from the rdp program on your dopod!
It should be similar over wifi on a LAN but instead of the no-ip name you just enter the computer name and password.
Forgive my terrible explanation of the setup but i can never quite explain myself properly.
Their are loads of tutorials on the net for setting up rdp and other tunnelling software like vnc.
have you tried ... ??
Sorry if this doesn't answer your question. However, I wonder if this might help. Check out www.logmein.com. I use it to connect with my desktop and it's free. You can remote adjust the settings to 640x480 and it works well -- even at 800 x 600. It's free!! (you can pay to upgrade to different features, but I never have.)
You might also look at orb.com. I can't get the video streaming to work well at all, but you can (also) connect with files on your computer and download them to your athena. It's also free.
As far as vpn tunneling, I haven't had much luck getting it to work. There's a company called hotspotvpn. Their service is cheap and works great with a regular laptop. They advertise compatibility with windows mobile, but I could never get it to work. I'd love to know if anyone else was able to do vpn tunneling and how.
Hope this helps somehow.
1.) goto www.whatismyipaddress.com that will tell you what your ip address is
2.) if you have a router you need to find out (follow me) you desktop ip not the ip address that the website gave you but the ip address your router gives you.... (you can find this by going to start --> run --> type in cmd hit ok --> then type this in with no quotes "ipconfig /all" hit enter it should be somthing like 192.168.1.1XX or 192.168.0.1XX
3.) goto start menu right --> click on my computer --> click on properties --> click on the remote tab --> half way down click the box under remote desktop
4.) goto router and tell it to open port 3390 to your local ip found in part 2
5.) open rdp on pda and type in ip from part 1

As far as I'm aware you cannot change a physical MAC address as it is hardwired into the network interface card, therefore, the only way you could change it is by swapping out the main board.
Why would you want to change it?
You can't change it it's embedded into the wireless hardware, why would you want to?
I found this program Macshift for XP http://devices.natetrue.com/macshift/.
Maybe someone can change it to work on wm.
but the same question exists...why do you want to change your MAC address?
the Mac address is a combination of the manufacturers code and the device serial number. The result being that no two devices anywhere in the world have the same Mac address....should this happen in real life..all sorts of problems can occur with web based communications.
this been asked since the first htc device with wifi was released search
networking forum for info
as far as i know nobody ever managed to do it
also it would be a problem as 2 devices with the same mac address (mac addresses being the only truly unique identifier for 2 network devices could mess up network traffic pretty much)
the other person whos ½ packets you may intercept and his yours giving you both network instablity may feel strongly against you chanting your mac address to the same as his
I'd still like to know why BenBen_ wants to change the MAC address?
Maybe he cracked the wep key of an access point which uses MAC filtering and then analyzed the packets to find out which MAC has access to the AP .. And now he wants to use that MAC.. ( I am just assuming )
My Hero ID shows up on my wireless network as UNKNOWN, is there a way to change this? I know there was in WinMo, but I can't find anything in Android.
Thanks.
Do you mean the hostname?
I've not tried it but try setting it in /etc/hostname, and add it to the end of the localhost line in /etc/hosts, might work..
Hi Sam, thanks for the reply. Not sure what you mean by hostname.
I'm referring to how the phone is identified on a wireless network. With my WinMo devices I gave the phone a name in the Device ID section. Then, when I go to my router, I am able to see IP address, Device Name, and MAC address.
I cannot find any settings in the Hero that allow me to specify a device name, so it always shows up as UNKNOWN on the network.
Linux / unix
Deke
a Hosts file is a file that links IP address with Names... Windows have them UNIX and macs... etc...
its a file you will rarely see in windows. but in unix/linux you very well could.. as Android is based on Linux i beleive the sugesstion mentioned is to edit this file on your phone and ad the Local host (the phone itself) in there with the name you want it to have...
In UNIX (which i use) i can totaly see this working but have no idea if this will work on the phone, and you will need it to be 'rooted'
this means have access to the Administrators privlages to edit files...
(in linux root = Administrator)
there are posts on the forums on how to root your phone and it will open up function to you but at the same time will allow you to happly **** up the system files if you dont know what your doing and make your phone into a nice paperweight...
hope this helps
Hi Bobro; very helpful, thanks.
So basically I can't do something as simple as give my phone a useful ID without rooting it? I would regard that as a fundamental requirement, so it seems a bit foolish to omit the functionality from Android.
I found that the MAC address changes everytime I reboot my HD2 WP7.
I set my wifi router with MAC address access list, so I have to get rid of the access list fuction and got a not very safe wifi enviornment.
Is there any possibility that have the same MAC Address in next HD2 WP7 verison?
Brand new forum organization, and still same old crap posted in the dev section.
Go to Q&A!!
I saw this too.
The MAC Addresses are:
00:18:41:xx:xx:xx
Is it possible to set permanent MAC address?
