[Q] default.acdb - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

1. What does the default.acdb file do?
2. Is it a kernel or build file?
3. How to open and edit?
Why i`m asking:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839383

I'm not 100% sure but..
1. Controls the microphone gain sensitivity
2. I have a feeling its a kernel file seeing as though
"Release r7.7 - 27/10/2010
- Merged the main tree as usual (stuttering fix, acdb changes, etc)"
3. You can delete/rename it using astro ( /system/etc/firmware ), unless you're talking about actually editting the file itself, then im not sure.. sorry!

1. And nothing more?
2. Thx.
3. The problem is that when i rename it it creates som issues in android. So if i only could open it and make some sense of it i could edit it to fit my needs.

Is there a way to lower the in-call volume?

When someone calls me and they are talking everyone in the room can hear what they are saying, even when I vol-down to the minimum. Is there an app or a patch I can apply to fix this? This has been the case on virtually every Android ROM I have ever used. Maybe an APK, reg edit, or root folder file would be awesome, I've searched and couldn't find a workable solution.
Current setup:
HSPL3
2.15.50
running HD2ONE (cm6 ROM) from SD via MAGLDR
NAND full of WP7
Uuuh.
This described many many times before and have thread too.
1. go with RootExplorer (or something else) to /system/etc/firmware
2. delete default.adcb and htcleo.adcb (make sure you have mounted read/write in the folder)
3. just copy the defaut.adcb from the attached file
4. restart the phone (not hot restart)

[APP] Mms.apk Contact Box Fix for CodeROM

I patched a copy of the Mms.apk to remove the green bars behind the contact photo.
Tested with CodeROM NexusAce and CodeROMv2, should work CodeROMv1.
Note:
Skins feature is disabled.
Instructions:
1. Download the modified Mms.apk (Attached file)
2. Make a backup of your old Mms.apk in /system/app (Use Root Explorer).
3. Mount /system/app as R/W
3. Copy the modified Mms.apk to /system/app
4. Set the permissions to ---rwxr-x
5. Chane the file owner and group to 0 - root
6. Reboot
7. Hit the Thanks button if it worked
Update:
- Smaller file size.
Maybe i can help or give you an idea:
1. The Skin Option in menu is activated via the preferences.xml included in the MMS.apk file (you can copy from XXKPE, and try to install the MMS.apk, however whatever skin you select it does not change) which i think you need to do the next part.
2. The actual implementation of the skin is under the coding of classes.dex, which i dont know how to decompile.
thanks, it works
i will be waiting for the update for the skins
worked for me!
Thanks a lot!

thanks for this, can't get past this one though...
I found out that there must have been a miss declaration of an image res file in the class.dex or in the Mms.apk's before compiling. Its calling progressbar_indeterminate4.png instead of quickcontact_badge_small_unpressed.9.png or quickcontact_badge_unpressed.9.png from the /system/framework/framework-res.apk file.
Updated the first post.
- Smaller file size.
- Still no support for skins [May not be updated to support this feature. Sorry]
help!!
after reboot message icon in now inside menu and gone in the launcher, however the green thing is gone.
now there are only 3 icons in launcher ( keypad, contacts, menu )
update:
thanks i got fixed it myself, btw it is working but no skins.

The problem is in the classes.dex of the apk.
I copied a properly working classes.dex from another version of the Mms.apk and patched the res files to match the appearance of CodeROM's Mms.apk. But the new classes.dex either does not support the skin features or there is something in conflict.
As mentioned by vertcam9, preferences.xml activates the skin selection in the settings part of the app, but does not apply any changes whatever skin is selected. Proper classes.dex is necessary.

PUMa (Patch Utility Manager)

PUMa - Patch Utility Manager
The program is designed to install patches in the most universal applets\libraries firmware of Samsung-communicators. It works with both odexed, and with deodexed components of many firmware of devices I9100/I91**,I9300,I9500,G850,G900*,G920*/G925*,G928*,G930*/G935*,N7000,N7100,N900*,N910*,N920*,I9001,I9250(Galaxy NEXUS),I8150,P5100/5110,T310/311. Likely to install some patches and other communicators based on the Android OS. It works with external patch (the description of the format and work with them, see Puma_extpatch.txt file.. while only in Russian). Optionally, the added ability to load external data from internet. Information about loading the file is stored in the archive dllink.bin.
The following types of downloads:
• Modem FW (modem firmwares)
• Dump FW (dump stock firmware (aka the contents of the folder /system))
• Dump Content (content dump the firmware, broken into pieces by certain categories)
• Camera (camera firmwares)
• Firmware (common firmwares of devices)
• Program (program & tools)
Working with the program:
0) program preferably placed in a folder without spaces and in the Latin alphabet
1) before running the program in the folder "In" place the files that need to be applied patch/es or used submenu Necessary files for to obtain the necessary files
2) in the program indicate the type of device, AndroidOS version, the class of the patch on the right side select desired patch and click Apply. If you install the patch unnecessary, it is necessary will be shut down and run again, showing only the necessary patches.
At the end of the program components can be patched to pick up from folder "Out". Also, the after applying the patch, the program may specify a update to flashing with help ClockworkMode. While working with a patch program provides information on the processed applet\libraries as follows:
Installed - the patch is applied
Present - patch is already installed in the object
Impossible - impossible to apply the patch to the object
Partially installed - installed only a few points of patch
Mismatch - firmware version of the object is failing the established type device/AOS patch
Attention! Due to the fact that some antivirus programs (Norton360, NOD32, Avast,...) have a somewhat paranoid algorithm for determining the virus, they "found a virus" in PUMa.exe. This is a lie, because the program simply packed EXE-packer to save space. Place the file in the Exceptions PUMa.exe antivirals, so it will not annoy you. Also below is a MD5-hash of the file PUMa.exe, according to which you can verify its correctness, upon receipt of any sources

v 4.8
- Added Value_Res tool (Tools-Working with resources-Value_Res). It allows you to change resource values of APK-file (variables of xml-files from the folder res\values) without decompiling\recompile the applet. Currently supported by work with variables of type bool, color, dimen, integer. The algorithm works with the tool:
1. select the apk-file for editing; will automatically upload the names and values resources in the tabs
2. double click on a line change\edit variable (value changed resources are marked in bold)
3. at the end of the work click the Save button (a new file will be created with the current name, the old file is renamed to *.apk.bak)
- Added tool Obfuscation (Tools-Smali-Debug-Obfuscation). In the current version implemented methods of obfuscation of class names, methods, fields on algorithms Mirroring, Numeric order, NDP and Randomized in smali-code (the name and the algorithms invented by me). Distinctive features of the algorithms on a 5-point scale:
a) readability (1-good..5-bad)
b) difficulty in decryption (1-simply..5-impossible)
c) final code length (1-more..3-same..5-less)
Code:
(a) (b) (c)
Mirroring: 3 2 3
Numeric order: 2 4 5
NDP: 4 3 2
Randomized: 4 5 4
For general use available obfuscation method field names with algorithm Mirroring. Tool results on other methods and algorithms are only available by personal request.
- Changed algorithm decompilation\recompile applets with multiple dex-component
- Font in the program changed to Tahoma
- Supplied with the program added to the external patches:
N910*_6.0.*
N920*_6.0.*
G930*/G935*_6.0.*
• System-Removing the signature verification applications
• System-Increasing the speed of response Automatic Brightness Control (ABC)

AURORA mods/addons+Connect to ad-hoc hotspots guide+decompile/compile/edit apks guide

*THESE MODS ARE FOR AURORA! USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK ! SEARCH THIS THREAD FOR BAD REPORTS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ! SAY THANKS IF EVERYTHING GOES OK !*
*REMEMBER TO REBOOT YOUR PHONE IF YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES AT YOUR /SYSTEM/ FOLDER WITH A ROOT EXPLORER, IN ORDER FOR THE CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT
REMEMBER ALSO TO SET THE SAME PERMISSIONS AS THE OTHER FILES OF THE FOLDER YOU EDITED
IT IS SUGGESTED TO WIPE CACHE & DALVIK CACHE BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING
CWM 5.5.0.4 IS RECOMMENDED FOR FLASHING THESE MODS*
YOU MAY ALSO SEE THIS VERY USEFUL THREAD
ALL MODS UPDATED TO 5.0 (and compatible with any of the small updates, since they don't interfere with SystemUI, framework or android.policy.jar)
WAKEUP-WITH-VOLUME-KEYS:
UPDATE: Do you want this mod for your official 2.3.5?? See here
Hi there. I've modified a file of the dzo's aurora release in order to enable the "wakeup with volume keys" feature, when the phone is locked. I've been using it since the 1.6 dzo's release without having any problems and it has been tested also by other users without a problem yet. As many of us are having trouble with the nearly dead power button I think it may be useful. I have to pinpoint that this modification is NOT AN OPTION. IT IS PERMANENT. The only way to disable it is to reflash a regular (dzo's) aurora release, older, the same or newer, it doesn't matter or to flash the attached "stock_android.policy_(xxx)_flashable.zip" file.
So... the file that needs replacement is the /system/framework/android.policy.jar. As long as dzo doesn't make any changes to that file you can replace it without any problem at any aurora release. If any change is made I will update a new patch.
I suggest the following procedure to apply it:
1) Download the Aurora release you want.
2) Open the aurora_xx.zip file you've downloaded.
3) Navigate to /system/framework/ folder
3) Drag and drop inside that folder the "android.policy.jar" from the flashable zip attached. Replace if asked.
4) Flash the new .zip as usual.
Alternatively, you can try coping the android.policy.jar file with a root explorer to the same folder from your phone. Users have confirmed that this method works ok. I suggest the flashing method described above though.
EDIT: Flashable version added at the attachments. Flash it through clockworkmod normally. Thanks to sks976.

ADDING SYSTEM APPLICATIONS:
Some other changes you can do is to add the applications you want at the /system/app/ folder. After flashing or copying, these application would be "system applications" and the only way to remove them is to delete their xxxxx.apk file from the /system/app/ folder of your phone. You can do that easily with a file explorer with root permissions (ex. Root Explorer). So these applications better be worth it. I do that for Nova Launcher and Apex Launcher. IF YOU COPY THEM MANUALLY REMEMBER TO SET THE CORRECT PERMISSIONS (rw-r--r--) AND REBOOT!

REMOVING SYSTEM APPLICATIONS:
You can also remove applications that you don't want from any rom, simply by deleting their xxxx.apk file from the /system/app/ folder of the rom's flashable .zip or from inside the phone (after flashing) with a root file manager. Just be careful with which you remove, because it may be important for the system to work properly. Here is a list of POSSIBLE unwanted applications. I haven't tested all of them, but there are reports that removing them won't harm anything. It's up to you.
OpenWnn.apk (Japanase IME) - safe to remove if you want
PinyinIME.apk (Chinese IME) - safe to remove if you want
BackupRestoreConfirmation.apk (Google's backup and restore - see settings->Backup & reset)
SharedStorageBackup.apk
WAPPushManager.apk (process incoming WAP Push messages, supported by your provider) - safe to remove if you want
PermissionToAccessLocApi.apk
PrivInit.apk
com.android.inputmethod.pinyin.apk
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk (sync's your bookmarks from pc chrome if installed) - safe to remove if you want

Exchange.apk - If you use only Gmail)
Feedback on more apks and descriptions much appreciated!!

vold.fstab - CHANGE THE DEFAULT SDCARD: -thanks to julle131
There is this file named vold.fstab at your /system/etc/ folder, which controls which of your sdcards (Internal/External) will be mounted when you connect your phone to the PC. The last 2 lines are the only that matter. These are the two possibilities:
EXTERNAL SDCARD MOUNTED (DEFAULT):
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.4/mmc_host
dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard1 14 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host
INTERNAL SDCARD MOUNTED:
dev_mount sdcard /mnt/sdcard 14 /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host
dev_mount emmc /mnt/sdcard1 auto /devices/platform/msm_sdcc.4/mmc_host
change them as you wish with a root explorer or before flashing.
Record Videos in .mp4 file format
I edited the /system/etc/media_profiles.xml in order to record all videos in .mp4 file format. Download it and replace the stock one on your phone with it. Remember to set the same permissions and reboot.

Speedup wifi speeds - thanks to sbasil for the patch
Some reported that this works some didn't. Just try it if you have wifi speed problems. You can find the patch here
It replaces the /system/etc/firmware/wlan/qcom_cfg.ini file. The only difference from the original is at this line:
gDynamicPSPollvalue=5
that is commented out like this:
#gDynamicPSPollvalue=5
so you can do this change manually.
Ad-Blocking hosts
There is a file inside /system/etc/ folder named "hosts" which is responsible for blocking incoming links from the web. This can be used to filter out annoying ads from inside an app or at the browser. Flash normally without wipes. It's permissions must be rw-r--r--

GENERAL GUIDES
GPS FIXES
CHANGE THE GPS SERVER - gps.conf:
There is a file at your system/etc/ folder named gps.conf. This file has information for your GPS in order to work properly. If you open this file the first lines look like this:
#Test
#NTP_SERVER=time.gpsonextra.net
#Asia
NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
#Europe
# NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org
#North America
# NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
These are the servers your gps is communicating with. By default a server at asia is chosen (everything after a '#' symbol is a comment and isn't "executed"). So if you are in europe you should change the default server to be the european one for better behaviour of the gps. I always do this change and my gps works good and locks really fast. So this is how you should change these lines for the european server (you can use any root explorer to open the file as text):
#Test
#NTP_SERVER=time.gpsonextra.net
#Asia
#NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
#Europe
NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org
#North America
# NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
and for the american:
#Test
#NTP_SERVER=time.gpsonextra.net
#Asia
#NTP_SERVER=asia.pool.ntp.org
#Europe
# NTP_SERVER=europe.pool.ntp.org
#North America
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
CHANGE THE GPS INTERMEDIATE_POS - gps.conf: ON 2.03test DZO MADE THIS CHANGE - THANKS
Do this only if you have problems with gps.
Inside the /system/etc/gps.conf file you will find a line
INTERMEDIATE_POS=1
change it to
INTERMEDIATE_POS=0
save and exit. Report if it works for you...
ADD YOUR BOOT ANIMATION:
It is very simple to add your own boot animation. Just copy/replace the desired bootanimation.zip file to /data/local/ with a root explorer. Set the permissions to rwxrwxr-x and reboot.... Done! This will not delete your stock bootanimation, it just replaces it. To revert delete or rename the file you pasted...
To find boot animations search google for "ICS Bootanimations" or "Android Bootanimations" and you will find many of them. If the file you find is a flashable .zip DON'T FLASH unless it's compatible for U8800. If it is for another phone (for ex Nexus), just extract the bootanimation.zip file from it and do the procedure described above! Make sure that the file you paste is named exactly "bootanimation.zip", else it won't work.
Here is a boot animation developing thread for dzo's aurora releases. Credits to kostasvr :

CONNECT TO AD-HOC HOTSPOTS GUIDE - FOR ANY ANDROID VERSION:
I finally figured out how to connect to ad-hoc hotspots (hotspots from your pc) since android has disabled this, by filtering out the ad-hoc networks from the list. The best way to do this is to recompile the wpa_cli file removing this filtering but since I have no idea how to do that I found another way to bypass it. The idea is to manually create the profile of your wifi inside your phone and let it connect automatically! In order to do that you need a root file manager to edit the file : /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.
Lets say the ad-hoc wifi you have created is called MyWiFi and it has no password. Here is the guide:
0) Disable your wifi
1) Goto /data/misc/wifi/ and open wpa_supplicant.conf as text
2) Add this entry somewhere:
network={
ssid="MyWiFi"
mode=1
frequency=2412
key_mgmt=NONE
priority=50
}
set priority as you wish. Wifi connects automatically to the lowest available profile
3) enable your wifi and let it connect automatically!!!!
If you need encryption to your wifi (WARNING: only plaintext and static WEP) you have 2 ways:
1) Add at your wifi sharing options on your PC, MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of your mobile. This way only your mobile would be able to connect to your wifi and no changes are needed at your phone.
OR 2) Set a WEP encryption code from your computer and add these lines inside the {...} of the above code:
proto=WPA
key_mgmt=WPA-NONE

This is not only for Aurora, it is for any AOSP android which has ad-hoc filtering. But since MIUI and CM have this disabled I post it here and added it at the name of the thread.
BEWARE. WHEN THE PHONE IS CONNECTED TO AN AD-HOC NETWORK (MAYBE ALSO WHILE WIFI IS ON AND AT STANDBY) IT WON'T ENTER TO "DEEP-SLEEP" STATE NORMALLY, CAUSING GREATER BATTERY LOSS. I don't know why this is happening but it is a known problem!

I will support this thread with any other fixes-updates-tips-mods I find.
Thank you very much and CREDITS TO DZO FOR HIS WORK!
Enjoy!

AURORA ICS- "wake with volume keys" + mods/addons + Connect to ad-hoc hotspots guide
As promised, this is a complete guide on how to edit apk files. It is not only for AURORA. It is a general guide!
TOOLS YOU NEED
- apktool (It can handle .jar files too)
OR
- apkManager: Uses apktool to decompile and compile apks but offers easier UI and other options, such as signing apk. Rcommended!
You can find any of the above tools for your platform (linux, Windows, MacOs) at google or at xda threads.I won't put any links here because there are many editions. Find what works for you best. Attached you can find the version of apkManager I use (only linux compatible, and with some fixes).
UPDATE! New version (4.3.1) added that supports decompiling framework-res.apk! Enjoy!
MOD APKS
To edit any apk you need to decompile it. This process will create some folders which include the .xml files, the icons and the .smali files of the apk. The .smali code is a pain in the ass to understand but it is the only "safe" way to decompile and recompile an apk without destroying it. To edit an apk you have to do the following:
STEP 1: You need the framework-res.apk of the rom you are editing, because it contains necessary information for the apktool to decompile or compile. Copy the framework-res.apk of the rom and paste it at the same folder with apktool (if you are using apkManager, apktool is inside its "other" folder; copy it there)
STEP 2: Open a terminal/command line and navigate at the directory of the apktool
STEP 3: type this command
Code:
./apktool if framework-res.apk
This will install the framework-res.apk to your system. In linux it installs it at ~/apktool/ . I don't know for windows .
STEP 3: Decompile an apk. Lets say you want to decompile the SystemUI.apk.
If you use apkManager copy SystemUI.apk (or any apk you want to decompile/compile) at the "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder and run the Script.sh and you will easily find how to decompile, compile and sign the apk.
If you are using apktool copy SystemUI.apk (or any apk you want to decompile/compile) at the same place with apktool and execute this at terminal
Code:
./apktool d SystemUI.apk
and you will find at the same directory a folder with the name of the apk you decompiled and all of its files inside.
STEP 4: Edit anything you want to edit!
STEP 5: Recompile...
With apkManager follow the on screen instructions of the Script.sh and also sign the apk. You will find the apk ready at the "place-apk-here-for-modding" with the the name "repackaged-signed.apk". Rename it as the original and you are ready to rock.
With apktool execute this command:
Code:
./apktool b SystemUI/
SystemUI is the folder of the decompiled apk. It could be any other apk name instead. After that you will find a folder named "dist" inside the SystemUI folder and inside of it a an .apk file which is the new .apk with your changes. In order to sign your apk you need some extra tools. You can search the web on how to sign an apk. I don't know what are the consequences of using an unsigned apk. Probably it would work ok but I haven't tried it.
STEP 6: You are ready to put the new apk at your phone. Remember if you are replacing a system apk to set the correct permissions after pasting.
Cheers

How to Change Battery in ICS ROM - thanks to fergie716 and his guide here
After you got apktool all set up with ICS resources installed get the SystemUI.apk from your ICS ROM, decompile it.
Make sure you have installed framework-res.apk in apktool prior to decompiling ICS apks
Navigate to your decompiled SystemUI folder, go to /res/drawable-hdpi/
This is where the battery png's are in ICS. Copy/paste your battery png's. To make it more easy, make sure your png's follow the pattern (stat_sys_battery_1.png, etc)
If you plan on changing the png's for charging animation make sure you have the correct png's named stat_sys_battery_charge_anim0.png etc
(optional) Delete leftover battery png's, if any, from stock ICS
Once all your png's are in place, you need to modify the corresponding xml's
Those are found in SystemUI/res/drawable/stat_sys_battery.xml and stat_sys_battery_charge.xml
The first is responisble for the look of the battery while discharging and the second while charging. The form of them is like: When battery=20% show stat_sys_battery_20.png (random example). if you have percentage icons with all the values (0-100) you need to have a stat_sys_battery.xml like the attached named "stat_sys_battery_allpercentage.xml.zip".
For the charging images you can keep the stock stat_sys_battery_charge.xml or you can create a new based on the stock in order to show all percentages (if icons are provided). Attached you will find a charging animation .xml named "stat_sys_battery_charge_allpercentage_anim.xml.zip" which needs charging icons for all percentages in order to work properly.
If you have made mistakes at one of the .xml files the build will probalby fail or you will lose the battery icon. Your phone will work ok though and a flash of the stock SystemUI.apk will fix everything. You can decompile and use .xml files from other SystemUI.apk as long as the filenames match.
Now that you have your png's and xml's in place, go back and recompile.
How to Enable Lockscreen Rotation (ICS) - thanks to fergie716 and his guide here
-decompile framework-res.apk using apktool
-navigate to decompiled folder, go to /res/values/bools.xml
-change "config_enableLockScreenRotation" to "true"
-recompile framework-res.apk
HOW TO CENTER CLOCK - thanks to fergie716 and his guide here
-decompile your SystemUI.apk
-navigate to your decompiled folder and go to res>layout>status_bar.xml
-look for this line:
Code:
-press "enter" to create an empty line
-place your cursor at the beginning of that empty line and paste this line of code:
Code:
-make sure everything lines up (see the attached xml below)
-lastly, find this line:
Code:
name="notification_header_bg">
#00000000 would be fully transparent, #ff000000 is fully opaque.
[SIZE="5"][B]Lockscreen animation - thanks to fjsferreira for the guide[/B][/SIZE]
decompile framework-res.apk
go to res/values/bool.xml
change line
[CODE]true
to
Code:
false
Disable Unlock-with-menu-key - implemented by dzo on 2.05 and later
You may have noticed that if you are at lockscreen and press the menu key the phone unlocks. If you want to disable this do the following:
decompile framework-res.apk
go to res/values/bool.xml
change line
Code:
false
to
Code:
true
Enable ICS screen buttons
decompile framework-res.apk
go to res/values/bool.xml
change line
Code:
false
to
Code:
true
SystemUI.apk - bools.xml
After decompiling the SystemUI.apk you will find the bools.xml file inside res/values/ and it's stock form is this (I added descriptions, trueN, falseFF):
Code:
[COLOR="YellowGreen"][/COLOR]
false
[COLOR="YellowGreen"] [/COLOR]
false
[COLOR="YellowGreen"][/COLOR]
false
[COLOR="YellowGreen"][/COLOR]
false
[COLOR="YellowGreen"][/COLOR]
false
[COLOR="YellowGreen"][/COLOR]
false
Change them in your desire and report if you find something.
ENABLE VOLUME WAKE:
1) decompile android.policy.jar
I use apktool 1.4.3 for linux.
with the command:
apktool d [dir-of-the-.jar]
2) go to the apktool folder where the decompiled version is.
3) find the KeyguardViewMediator.smali source
4) change this:
...
.method private isWakeKeyWhenKeyguardShowing(IZ)Z
....
:sswitch_data_8
.sparse-switch
#0x18 remove
#0x19 remove
0x1b -> :sswitch_5
....
5) save and compile again with the command:
apktool b -f [dir-of-the-decompiled]
- ...more to come
Cheers
hey mate.
Just flashed 1.9, but forgot to change the android policy jar file
Well, tried to do it just moving it to the /system/framework, and it worked great, after reboot
thanks
Thanks spirosbond, REP+
thanks a lot. works great
Thanks for the feedback guys.

One thing you could add here (If you want) is a list of "bloatware" in this rom. The un-needed keyboards and some things. It would be easier to find the list from this topic than searching the post in ICS aurora topic.

Modifying the layout of the Joying Radio app

Modifying the layout of the Joying Radio app.
version 0.2 See changelog at the bottom of this post.
This works in essence for most apks. There are some differences where the layout is defined in xml files or in json files.
Requirements:
java runtime version 7 or better.
apktool: (https://ibotpeaches.github.io/Apktool/)
Editor that handles unix LF correct. Any linux or Mac OS/X editor will do. Notepad on Windows does NOT. On Windows use Notepad++: (https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/) for example.
Optional: ApkPack: (http://mirrors.gtxlabs.com/joying/3_Misc_Tools/ApkPack/)
Read(!!) the basic apktool Basic, Decoding, Building: (https://ibotpeaches.github.io/Apktool/documentation/) documentation to get a general understanding for the apk structure. It's about 1½ page and prevents a lot of questions.
Knowledge of working in a terminal / command box (some people still call this a DOS-box). These actions are not done using a nice graphical interface/program.
Installation of requirements:
Java: Either use Sun java: (https://www.java.com) for all platforms, Openjdk: (http://openjdk.java.net) for linux, or Mac OS/X's own java version (make sure it is version 7 or better)
apktool: See here: (https://ibotpeaches.github.io/Apktool/install/)
ApkPack.exe: This one can be used to pack/unpack the Allapp.pkg. This allows you to get the apks. Another option is to "adb pull" the original from your unit to work on.
apkPack is a windows binary but runs fine under wine.
General note
An apk file is actually nothing more than a zip file. This means that you can also unzip/rezip an apk. For only modifying buttons and other graphical elements, this is sufficient. When you also want to modify the layout of the main screen or sub-screens, you really need apktool to decompile/compile. If you want to do minor code changes, you also need apktool. (Also a java jar file is also nothing more than a zip file).
Note for Windows users
Text files contain lines (obvious). These lines end with CRLF ("\r\n") line endings on Windows (and MAC versions before OS/X). On linuxes/unixes they end with "\n".
For some files inside an apk this really matters! That's why you need an editor that can handle that correctly, like for example Notepad++.
Android is Case sensitive! Uppercase and lowercase characters do matter and are different (unless when used in strings)
Getting the radio apk
Copy one of my radio mods.
Use ApkPack.exe to get the apk out of the Allapp.pkg.
Use adb to copy the apk from the unit like "adb pull /system/app/JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0/JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0.apk ." (the last "." is not a typo). This assumes you already made a connection via USB or tcpip
Download the apk from "http://mirrors.gtxlabs.com/joying/1_Firmware/".
Install framework-res for use in apktool
This step might not be necessary for the radio apk, but is necessary if you modify apks that use system functions. It's anyway better to do this step.
Every Apktool release contains internally the most up to date AOSP framework at the time of the release. This allows you to decode and build most apks without a problem. However, manufacturers add their own framework files in addition to the regular AOSP ones. To use apktool against these manufacturer apks you must first install the manufacturer framework files.
Inside the 5009_60.zip (or previously the 5009_20.zip), you will find inside "/system/framework" the "framework-res.apk". Extract that one from the zip.
In a terminal window, you do on the command line:
Code:
<path_to>/apktool if <path_to>/framework-res.apk
You need to do this step for every new ROM upgrade from Joying.
Decompile the apk
Create some folder where you want to work on the apk.
Inside that folder do inside a terminal:
Code:
<path_to>/apktool d <path_to>/JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0.apk
(Change forward slash "/" to backward slash "" on windows.).
This will create a folder "JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0" containing the decompiled apk including the from-binary-to-UTF-8 text converted AndroidManifest.xml.
Code:
AndroidManifest.xml (file)
apktool.yml (file)
assets (folder containing "all kind of things" needed by the apk, but not belonging to the standard res structure. This can be images, files, scripts or even other apks)
original (folder containing original AndroidManifest.xml)
res (folder containing layout, graphics, translations, etc.)
smali (folder containing the decompiled code in "smali" format)
The "res" folder contains a large amount of sub folders.
The three most important folders are:
Code:
drawable-land-nodpi-v4 (contains resolution unspecific graphic elements for landscape mode)
drawable-nodpi-v4 (portrait version of above. Only needed because the original apk contains a corrupt png and can't be recompiled)
raw (contains screen config/layout in json formatted files. Most apks have the config/layout in straight xml)
Initial steps when using the original apk
When using the original apk (instead of one of my mods), you need two extra steps:
- Copy the "ic_point.png" from the folder "drawable-land-nodpi-v4" to the folder "drawable-nodpi-v4". As mentioned: that png is corrupt in the original "drawable-nodpi-v4" which makes that you can't recompile the apk.
- You need to make a small code change in smali to get rid of the "PS:" prefix in front of the PS-text containing the station name.
Edit the "smali/com/syu/radio/RadioController.smali" in a good editor! (NOT Notepad).
Search for the string "PS:" which is in line 1557.
Change:
Code:
const-string v3, "PS:"
into
Code:
const-string v3, ""
Relation between the graphical elements and the layout definition
All the graphical elements like buttons, the frequency ruler and numbers for the (big) frequency are in "res/drawable-land-nodpi-v4".
The layout definition is in "raw/radio_ui.json". The "radio_ui.json" determines which graphical elements are used, and how and where they are positioned. The "radio_ui.json" also determines which texts in which font and font size are used and where they are positioned.
Examples:
The big frequency ruler is named "type":"HorizontalRuler" in the radio_ui.json and defined by the graphical element "drawables":["bk_ruler"], where "bk_ruler.png" is the image. Note that in the json file no extensions (.png) are used.
The "type":"StationView" determines the 6 buttons with inactive (unselected: *_n), active (current selected: *_p) and "on_click/on_tap" (*_p) state. Note also that you will find a ' "extras":[30,0,0,0],' in these sections. This will offset the x-postion 30 pixels to the right. If you want to center the text, change it to: "extras":[0,0,0,0],
The Frequency numbers and the buttons left/right around it. The frequency numbers are the images "num_0.png" to "num_9.png", plus the "num_point.png". The buttons left/right are the "drawables":["ic_freqm_n", "ic_freqm_p"] (down) and "drawables":["ic_freqp_n", "ic_freqp_p"] (up).
The PS, TA, AF, PTY etcetera can easily be found. These do not contain "drawables" (images), but are defined by textsize and text color.
All elements are positioned in a "X0,Y0,X1,Y1" or "top_left_X, top_left_Y,bottom_right_X, bottom_right_Y] rectangle.
Actually this is all.
You can play with it to change the layout.
If you want to change color or form of buttons, ruler or other elements, you have to modify exiting elements or create new elements in either Gimp or Photoshop or another package you are familiar with.
Note1: most PNGs are stored in "optimized" color mode (only store used colors) instead of "RGB" color mode (use full color palette). On small PNGs this can reduce the files by a factor 2, thereby reducing your apk size from ~2 MB to ~1.5 MB. This also means that in Gimp or Photoshop (or whatever), you first need to set the color mode to "RGB" before altering the elements, and before saving them back to "optimized".
Note2: Remember that Android is case-sensitive. When working with the layout or the graphics, keep this in mind!
Recompile the apk
When you are done "playing" and you want to experience the great and glorious app you created, you need to recompile it.
In your folder where you have the unpacked folder "JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0", you do a:
Code:
<path_to>/apktool -c b JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0
- Note that you specify the folder name, not some apk name
- the "b" is for build.
- The "-c" is to use the original AndroidManifest.xml
If you see errors, please first google for it before asking questions. There is so much to find on this stuff on the web.
If your apk compiled successfully (don't mind the warnings), you will find it inside "JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0/disẗ" as a new "JY-JY-1-C9-Radio-V1.0.apk".
Push the apk to your unit.
Simply use one of the scripts from my repository. Make sure to have adb in the right place (windows) or change the script accordingly. Read the Readme: (https://github.com/hvdwolf/Joying-RootAssistant/blob/master/Radio-Mod/Readme.md) on my github repository inside the "Radio-Mod" section for info on how to use the scripts to install it on your unit.
Troubleshooting
Q1. adb or adb.exe can't be found.
A1. Make sure you have adb installed. Use the proper path to adb.
Q2. I can't get a connection to the unit.
A2. Search the web and find out how adb should work, see also the readme in my Radio mods. On 6.0.1 first activate adb over tcpip, or conect via USB.
Q3. You get an android icon instead of the Radio icon and when you tap it, your unit says "application not installed".
A3. Reboot, check again and try another time to copy it to your unit. If nothing works (after a couple of attempts), reboot and copy the original radio apk back in place, reboot again.
Q4. You rebooted the unit and you hear music, but you don't see a Radio icon.
A4. Same as Q3/A3: so do the same. This is due to the fact that the Radio function is a 2-step approach on the Intel joying units. The CarRadio.apk (hidden) does the real work. The Radio.apk is just the visible "tweak and go" app.
Changelog:
Version 0.2, 06 June 2017; few typos and rephrasing; Add reference to working in terminal / cmd box; Add paragraph on installing framework-res.apk as dependency for apktool.
Version 0.1, 05 June 2017; first version
Do you need to pull the framework file from the unit and load into apk tool first?
https://ibotpeaches.github.io/Apktool/documentation/#framework-files
I ran into issues on 6 with apktool until I loaded the framework.

Did you have issues with the Radio app or with the SofiaServer apk?
I tried with the framework that came with apktool (inside the jar) and with the framework-res.apk from the joying unit.
Apart from the issues you can encounter on this 6.0.1 version, I didn't notice differences for the Radio app.
I can imagine that with SofiaServer being a real system app, that it also might need the framework-res.apk.
However, normally when decompiling you get an error if you miss a "framework" type apk. It will even mention which apk you need. (Had that on my previous Samsung phone which uses a lot of Samsung only resource and framework like apks.
I will at least add a 5th Q/A section describing how to do that.

I had issues when I made changes to the SofiaServer apk. I initially built against the 6.0.1 ROM using the 5.1.1 framework. I didn't see any errors, the apk just would not work when loaded on the unit. Now, I pull it from the ROM and load on every ROM update ( just to be safe).
