[Q] myTouch 4G Recovery Issues! Please Help!

I checked through 100s of post tonight and could not find the answer to this and am in need of some help. I attempted to install a Cyanogen Nightly tonight through Rom Manager with no prior knowlege of the issues with CW 2.5 vs. CW 3.0. Stupid I know.
So natuaraly, when the download finished and Rom Manager tried to install, my MT4G just hung at the white boot screen. Through previous posts, the directions were simple to reflash the previous CW Recovery through Fastboot and reflash the Rom.
Well thats where the problem is.... When I attempt to flash ANY Rom earlier than 3.0.0.5, it will say OKAY in CMD, however the phone will never boot into the Recovery. I even tried fastboot erase recovery then reinstalled and still nothing.
So i decided to go a different root and reinstalled 3.0.0.5 to see if there was any work around through there. After i install 3.0 through Fastboot, I am able to go into Recovery, however when I select ANY option no matter what, the hat and the gear icon stay in the background and nothing happens.
I am very confused and lost and am hoping someone here will have had the same issue and can help me get my phone back in order.

I havent had that issue exactly, but I might be able to help wlk you through getting this fixed. Ive had problems more than once myself on recovery, and helped a couple others solve other issues on here. If you want, add me on google talk (same username as on xda), and Ill walk you through it. Might have to wait till the morning, though, as Im probably gonna head to bed soon.

Fastboot 2.5 recovery and reflash froyo rom. If you decide to install CM7 again - read,search and make sure that you understand what you're doing. It has been stated at least few dozen times that Rom Manager is useless with gingerbread until Koush updates it.

I believe my issue sounds similar.
I tried to go from Iced Glacier up to CM7. When I did I attempted to use the Clockwork Recovery 2.5 and of course it didn't work. Then I tried to upgrade it to 3.0.0.5. Now when I try to reboot into Clockwork recovery the phone just stays on the MyTouch 4G splash screen. The only way to get around it is use the Power/Volume down button and click on FASTBOOT and then select REBOOT.
The phone then boots in Iced Glacier. I have redownloaded ROM Manager and attempted to FLASH CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. But it still won't load into recovery.
Essentially I need some step by step help to get back to clockworkmod recovery. I'm not too worried if I need to wipe everything. Just looking for the ability to restore again.
Alternatively I'm interested in upgrading to CM7 but not sure how I could do that without recovery working. I would also ask if you can give step by step instructions it would be much appreciated as I'm still pretty new to this.

I also have the similar problem. I have installed the Clockworkmod 3.0.0.5 and have rooted my phone before i was trying to install the gingerbread version. I made a recovery backup. i tried to restore the phone with that backup image but it still hung up with that "t-mobile mytouch " white splash screen.
What should i do now ? i have no idea how to bring my phone back to life :/

Sounds like both of you should of never of done this. This has been discussed a few times, and the end result is always the same.....
Download the correct Recovery image (which can be found in the Development section) and install it to your phone by using the ADB commands, in the fastboot mode. you can find a quick and painless way to set those up in my signature. Once you have installed the recovery image you can boot into hBoot and select recovery. from there you can flash CM7 and the gapps. Once you have done all that download the official clockwork ROM manager from the market and flash his current recovery image.

My phone won't get passed the t-mobile mytouch 4g screen. This happened after I backed up my stock rom using rom manager and did a full wipe to start clean ut no after I went back and restored my backup, my phone is stuck on the mytouch screen and won't get pass that. Is my phone bricked? or can it be saved? can someone pls help me? I just got this phone yesterday and rooted it with no problem. All I did after the root was add a custom kernel. Everything was going great until I restored my backup. Pls help. Thanks in advance.

try going into the bootloader. press power& the volume down button at the same time. then let it load, select the option to boot into recovery. once u do that wipe all cache, data, and restore the backup u made. but if it doesn't boot up again then it might be a defective backup. might have to start fresh with flashing a new rom. but keep trying once u boot into the phone tho. goodluck!

I tried that and still not working. Is there away I can get a stock rom to flash?

Now I can't even boot into clockworkmod recovery. Now it boots me to the stock recovery. How can I get clockworkmod recovery back? I can't flash a rom without it.

The phone still says s-off so I don't know what is wrong and since I bought the phone yesterday I can take it back to t-mobile to get a new one but won't they notice the s-off and not exchange it?

Use Fastboot. It is like adb, but only uses the bootloader on the phone. If you don't have the SDK installed, you can get adb and Fastboot from TrueBlue_Drew's thread in the dev subforum.

Is there an official update.zip I can probably apply through the stock recovery?

Thanks Jaylito and Jggimi for your help, was able to get into cwm recovery and flash a new rom. It looks like I had a bad backup. Thanks again to you both.

[Q] Do I have a brick?

I was running CM7 RC3 fine on my phone, then I decided to switch back to my nandroid backup to stock ( I have done this wil ICed glacier/CM7 RC2/RC1/Royal Ginger etc with no problems). And I have been stuck on the boot splash screen the "Tmobile Mytouch 4g" screen for 20 minutes now without any action... is this a brick? I know I should not worry, but I tried wiping the dalvik cache the acahe and reset to factory setting.... still nothing
How do I go about getting the phone to work?

are you running recovery 3.0.0.6? have you tried a battery pull?

need 3.0.0.6 to run stock or royal glacier. or 2.5.1.2. need to reinstall cm7 and use rom manager to flash recovery. or at least its the eaisest way for me.

unfortunately, I am not being able to go back to royal ginger (its on the toyal ginger splash screen now) I am downloading CM7 RC3 again, but have no way to put it on the sdcard coz I do not have a card reader at this point....... so frustrated.

you can use recovery to mount usb and it will mount the sd card and can tranfer files from computer to card. if you can get to recovery its not bricked. make sure you format boot sys data and cache in mount screen before trying reflash.

Push the cwm 3.0.0.6 recovery image to your phone via adb

Google easy way to get 3.0.0.6 and it should be a zip file u flash in recovery called clockwork_recoveries.zip or something like that. You go into rom manager pick all recoveries and flash 3.0.0.5 and reboot into recovery and it should say 3.0.0.6 now u can flash any rom and restore without getting stuck

Your phone is not bricked. As others have stated, you need to re-flash a gingerbread ROM (like CM7) in order for it to boot.
Best thing to do is install ClockworkMod Recovery version 3.0.0.6 because it can flash both gingerbread and froyo ROMs. You can do this in two ways:
1. Re-flash a Gingerbread ROM. Download TrueBlue_Drew's .zip file from his thread in Development and follow his instructions to be able to flash the included recovery images from ROM Manager.
2. If you have the engineering bootloader (0.85.2007, also some people call it ENG SPL), and if you've set up ADB on your computer, then you can use the fastboot utility to flash recovery images directly to the device. I personally prefer this method. If you can't find instructions to do this, PM me.

Hello. i am new to the android family
i have a nexus s GT-9020T
i have rooted my phone but without setting the clockworkmod reovery.
today i was playing with the rom manager and downloaded one of the rom from the list. after installation i was unable to start the phone only seeing the google logo with the unlock logo.
i went back into the recovery by typing flash recovery recovery.img etc.
run a restore and restart the phone but still not work
my nexus s is 2.3.4 by the way.
please assist

Model: i9020T
Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1
That'll revert your Nexus S to the latest completely stock 2.3.4
Then you can flash recovery again and go back to clockwork mod and go flash another rom or whatever.
Remember when you're flashing a new rom you need to wipe data and cache and dalvik cache.

i run an restore from the backup that i made before installing the new rom using clockwork mod recovery, its part of the option when installing the rom using the rom manager * click box - backup * etc something like that

Next time don't use Rom Manager to make backups or flash roms. It's stupid and can get you issues like you're having.
Anyways, try wiping data and cache then restoring the backup, do it in Clockwork Recovery.
Let it boot, first boot always takes a while, 5-10 minutes. If you see the boot animation freeze, stop and restart, then yeah it's screwed up, otherwise, just let it is.
If still not working from your backup, do what I said in previous reply, just restore to stock 2.3.4 then re flash clockwork mod and start over with the rom you want to flash.

thank your nxt. i have found the real problem. it was not my backup problem or the rom that u provided. it was the version of my clockwork mod recovery. i was using an 2.x.x.x to restore the phone which is why it doesn't work. everything work fine now after i flashed with an 3.x.x.x and restore the phone. one question thou, where can i always find the newest clockwork mod recovery release ? thank you very much

Or just use ROM Manager to get the latest.
That's the only thing I use ROM Manager for... getting the latest Recovery.

thanks again nxt. if you don't mind really ...i have one more question. i know the phone intend to uninstall clockwork mod recovery once its restarted. i know there is command type into the cmd to avoid the phone uninstall the clockworkmod reovery and make it permanent in another word. I didn't run those command when i root my phone because i don't know if its good to make it permanent like.... hmmm like if there will be a 2.3.5 coming next month..just saying ok... with a permanent unofficial recovery will cause a problem?

Are you running custom ROM? If you are, it's already made to not revert back to stock recovery. If you leave it stock recovery you'll get notifications for firmware updates by Google, but remember that applying those to a rooted phone might screw things up too.

Help! Flashed stock recovery and now dead tablet

Hello i downloaded the stock recovery for my nexus 10 because i wanted to go back to stock for the sooon to come 4.3 android update. I tried using the command to flash but it didnt work so i downloaded flashify and used that to flash. It said it completeded and told me to either flash more stuff or reboot. I rebooted and it went to a dead android with a warning in the chest area :crying: I tried holding power to shut off tablet for 30 seconds but it turns right back on into dead android image. I can get into fastboot if i hold volume up while it turns on but now the only choice is start and it says downloading do not turn off target. If you know whats wrong please help me. Is there anyway to fix this without flashing stock?

There might be. Using onboard flashing tools is not a good idea since it doesn't seem like you know what you're doing (no offense) with the low-level tools. You should be able to dirty flash your ROM from stock (although you do realize that the stock recovery will be useless to you if you're trying to update to 4.3 over a custom ROM, right? Or if you're on a stock rooted ROM that flashing will unroot you?) to leave your /data partition intact.
When you said "the command to flash", I assume you're referring to "fastboot flash recovery <path-to-recovery.img>". You will need to rerun that, probably flashing a custom recovery. If your system boots correctly after this, then you can go ahead and reflash your stock recovery (and the problem would likely have been a messed up partition). If not, then you can try to boot into the custom recovery to do a dirty flash of your ROM (i.e. a flash without using factory wipe). If that doesn't work either, you can open up a .zip of your ROM and use "fastboot flash system <path-to-system.img>", pointing to the system image in your ROM. That should generally get you at least bootable again.

Yes I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm on stock. Anyways I'll try what you said about flashing custom recovery again and thanks for the reply. I just really don't want to lose all my data or else I wouldve flashed stock by now

Not a problem. These tools are really useful when they work, but it's definitely better to know how to do it when things go wrong (and they almost always will at least once). Just keep a level head about it and don't panic. Fastest way to lose data, that.

ok thanks. Well i got it booting and i decided im just going to back up everything with titanium backup and reflash stock with wugs toolkit

OK I'm a big idiot I did all this for no reason. I flashed back to stock with wugsroot kit and apparently it wiped all SD data so I lost all my titanium backups as well as pictures and apps and everything. Damn I'm stupid. Well I guess now that I lost all my data I might as well flash a custom ROM :banghead::banghead:
