Root for Motorola Milestone 2? - Milestone 2 General

Does anybody know if root is already available for the Motorola Milestone 2 or when it is coming and who is doing it?
Thanks in advance!

Is the Milestone 2 even out yet?

Nope.

So why would we be talking about rooting a phone that nobody has even put their hands on yet??
IMO rooting should be very easy (it was for the Droid 2) but Bootloader will pretty much 100% guaranteed to be locked. Even the Droid 2 bootloader is locked despite the original Droid being wide open

I got my Milestone 2 yesterday I guess we'll have to wait for root, but who will do it???

Where do you live?
I see that the UK has received the Milestone 2 a few days earlier than the planned 18th launch.
Try the universal Androot method. The M2's bootloader should be locked like the Droid 2.

I live in Germany and got the Milestone 2 from o2 (no contract).
I tried the Universal Androot but it didnt work.
I'm wondering who is / will work on rooting (and Nandroid, OpenRecovery) for the Milestone 2.

I have Milestone 2 on order and want it rooted so am hoping this one works

z4root works for MS2 As far as Cyanogen and stuff goes I have no idea. Good luck to anyone who gets that working haha.

@SedaG,
did you use the Permanent or Temporary root option in z4root for your M2?
I've tried the temporary and that does not enable root access and I've been holding back on the permanent root option before it has been confirmed working.

How much?
I was deciding between original MS, G2, HTC Desire Z and MS2. They're the only ones that are high-end and have qwerty and usable in Aus (GSM).
I heard the Droid2 WorldEdition is SIM-locked and unable to be used here.
If only the EPIC 4G had a GSM radio, they could remove the 4G aswell if they keep the 3G radio ... that is all I want. But damn it to hell, guess I'm stuck without a qwerty till the PSPhone

Ok, root confirmed on the M2!
z4root (install directly from Android Market) works our of the box for Milestone 2 (model A953) if you use the Permanent root option, temporary root won't work. The process may take up to 5 mins...

No, the D2G can be unlocked(either calling Verizon up and asking nicely or a third party method to get the unlock code) to use on any GSM carrier except in the US(expected because Verizon/Vodaphone rather you use it on their carrier instead of the competition).

Just one more confirmation that Z4root works. My phone did freeze up once while running it, but after a battery pull everything was fine and I had root.

We need a new forum for the Milestone 2 development
Hi,
I dont know if any moderators from xda is looking but we need a separate forum for the milestone 2...
AS WE HAVE ROOT..
then hopefully Cyanogen..

I have been hearing about something that is quite serious...
Is the bootloader still locked as it was on the Milestone 1?
Is there any way we can confirm that the bootloader is not locked (maybe a droid 2 rom ported to milestone 2)??

The bootloader is locked, all Motorola high end phones will have a locked bootloader going forward (you don't even have to ask).

got one...
I got my milestone 2...unfortunately, i live in the states and cant use it on the AT&T network. i only can use it on the "Edge" 2G network.....kinda sucks
Wondering can i get this Version.62.2.16.A953.Retail.en.GB Version off and run an US Version will it fix that???
Thanks, any help would be great

Bootstrap for Droid 2 works on the Milestone 2, doing a backup now

Has anyone found news about 2.3 for us???

I wake up everyday looking for news about 2.3 getting released. I am on 2.2.1 so I lost the ability to root. So i hope this comes out soon and if anyone has any info please post.
Officially it should come out in "coming weeks" as this tweet suggests - http://twitter.com/googlenexus/status/16974464310845440.
But there's a way to root your 2.2.1 anyways. Follow this guide:

Just unlock your bootloader.
I have tried the super one click no luck
Other than unlocking, which is the preferred and safest way to do it. You could just follow the guide that was linked here. I did it for my friend just last week because he was afraid of the official way to root for some reason. It worked perfectly.
Yeah I did it the rageagainstthecage way.

Works fine for me. Did you get stuck at the looping problem after following the steps in the OP?
The way around that, as many of us have discovered, is to turn the phone off then run SuperOneClick and select 'root'. Turn the phone back on once 'waiting for device..' is shown in the program and then just leave it until it finishes.
Ensure USB debugging is enabled before you get started and that your PC has the required drivers installed. (Check Device Manager).
To be fair the Original Post needs updating as the instructions aren't very good without the above being mentioned.

Dumb question but, does that method allow you to install custom roms (e.g. CM7) without unlocking the bootloader, thus keeping the warranty?

Using exploit to root allows you to get rooted device without unlocking the bootloader. However, I cannot tell you 'your warranty is kept' for certain(as long as bootloader is locked and you can revert to stock, I think it's okay).

This does not unlock the boot loader....... and, yes you can flash roms once rooted.

If you do revert to stock there should be no way to tell you ever modified the rom, isn't that right?

His question isn't about relocking the bootloader. But as long as you reflash the stock ROM and recovery, then I don't think there would be a way to tell without further examination. Regardless, HTC isn't too strict with the warranty claims, as many members on this forum have claimed warranty and sent back rooted phones to HTC. You should be fine.

that's 3 weeks. "coming weeks" being a PR equivalent of more than a month, we should be waiting for gb another 2 weeks at least...
It's only 5% of GB, but you can have the keyboard from it. A definite improvement and works perfectly on my N1 with 2.2.1 (no root needed):

Calls for Devs, Euroxoom?

Guys, Euroxooms are becoming expensive paperweights pretty quickly.
The boot image is what is bricking the devices as its not compatible when Root is being done.
Obviously we take the risks when we root, but im slightly PO with it Just kidding, i have faith in XDa and i hope to donate soon for such a worthy cause.
My question I pose to the devs is the following, Can someone source out a boot.img to recover back to Stock, for the Mz601 model? (3g / wifi Euro variant)
I see all the recovery and root for the Verizoom, but nothing for our Europe brothers here
Has there or is there, any work being done on recovering bricked devices?
A shot into the dark here .... have you attempted flashing the US system image?

I rooted my UK Xoom without problems but when I tried one of the BigDX Xoom themes I got loads of Force Closures.
I had no option but to flash the boot.img and system.img files taken from the Canadian (MZ604)
At least this recovered my Xoom to a working version and now works fine now running a rooted Xoom with the latest Tiamat Xoom 1.4.0 kernel.
I have now made a Nandroid backup using ClockworkMod Recovery should I have problems in the future.
Hopefully, someone will pull the recovery.img, boot.img and system.imf files from the UK Xoom???
Cheers
Ody

Guys be patient, I have a stock system and boot image for us, we just need to get a recovery, DO NOT ROOT using the methods here, I will post a rooted boot for euro as soon as I can get it tested.
I have asked the people posting the root instructions to mention that it should not be used on the euro xoom's but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

may i suggest that the Devs sticky this for the benefit of the European Xoom.
I bricked mine, bought in york, took to Portsmouth CPW and they replaced it there and then, you might not be so lucky, but i think we need to be careful with bricking it lol ,
On a lighter note, how do we dump our roms with boot, system image files, for the benefit of all those who want to unbrick their uk / euroxooms?
How did you brick your Xoom? You did'nt try and relock it? As I said no problems rooting my Xoom from PCWorld? PUP!!!!

That'll explain it! I may be wrong but to re-lock it, you would need to flash UK image files (boot.img, recovery.img and system.img). I'll leave my UK Xoom unlocked and rooted until Motorola release a proper recovery flash file?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
haha, yeah might be a good idea, you have a DHD too? XD, what you running on it ?
im currently on CM 7.0.2 xd , nice phone :_),
How did you get your root on your tab? i am desperate to root it as TitBAckup is a necessity xd plus i want to experiment, do you think its worth waiting till the files for the Eurotab are released?
When i try to boot my tab after the one click root, it was at that point it was bricked, i didnt try to lock it until after ,
weirdly enough though, i could still use fastboot after to do one click root, etc, and lock and unlock and install CWM,
Yep DHD running HDMix Gingerbread! To be honest I don't think you bricked your xoom if you can still get Fastboot? I don't know why one click root didn't work for you but did for me? That said Titanium isn't working for me with the latest Tiamat 1.4.0 kernel.
Also just to say my UK Xoom is WiFi only (not 3g) might explain why I could root mine?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
yeah if you have a wifi only xxom, thatll explain why you have bee able to use the 604 canadian images.
Quick question for you EU zone Xoom wifi owners... on the back of your device where the CE mark is, does it also list an FCC ID? If so what is it?
yes it does, erm, it would vary with the wifi model obviously, ill have alook abd get back to you

I really should have asked if there was a TUV registration number and FCC ID. (CE mark is a certificate of self conformance).
What I was trying to determine is if the hardware between the euro spec wifi xoom and the us spec wifi xoom are the same. If they are then both units could share the same fcc id. In theory the wifi Xoom could hold both a TUV ID, and FCC ID since there is in theory no need to make engineering changes between the units to meet compliance regulations, and because of the costs involved most companies tend not to make engineering changes if they do not need to.
The 3G units will obviously have variations because of the different Rx/Tx frequencies for the various cellular carriers, but
My WiFi FCC ID Number is IHDT56MT1

[Q] Silverstar Droid/Milestone X MB809 2.2.2 - SBF to Verizon firmware?

I have a friend that moved from the Midwest with Silverstar Wireless (http://www.silverstarwireless.com/)
He got a contract on Verizon, but got a crappy Samsung Gem. He's hoping I can get the Droid X to work. I'm hoping I can put a Verizon 2.3.4 ROM on his phone so it will work properly.
BEFORE everyone asks, YES, I spoke to Verizon Level 2 (or 3?) tech support. The tech worked with me for almost an hour trying to get the phone unlocked using the stock Silverstar software. I have all of the unlock codes. Voice and SMS will work properly, but we could not get data to work at all. 3G is completely dead. *228 doesn't work. The tech thought it wasn't communicating properly with Verizon towers; maybe the baseband is bad? Verizon WILL take the device, however, and the IMEI is accepted.
Any ideas? I'll try third party ROMs, such as CM7, etc, but for the sake of ease, I figured a stock rom might be easier.

a) I'm not positive but I think if the phone can work with Verizon, it can do it without being rommed.
b) If you fix it, let me know what you did because I'm on an actual DROID X and started having the same problem late last week (except that I'm not switching carriers). Both Verizon and Motorola seem to be clueless as to how or why.
EDIT: In case they didn't tell you - ##PROGRAM is how you get to all the low-level stuff (password is 000000 I think). But DON'T just change it on your own or if you do make sure you write down what you changed it from.

Yes, thanks, these are the codes I had. As I mentioned, a VZ tech walked me through the manual programming, and we got voice and text to work, but no data - basically defeating the purpose of a smartphone. At this point, I'm guessing I need an MB809 SBF, but I somehow need to change the baseband/radio to a Verizon file. Assuming, of course, that I can unbrick the phone...

[Q] Unlocked bootloader on Razr M?

Has anyone unlocked the bootloader on their Razr M retail version yet? It's been mentioned on some other forums that you can get the unlock code from Motorola website. This should then allow a recovery to be installed onto the phone.
So has anyone attempted it yet?

No, he's an Aussie , our RAzr Ms are unlockable.
My Australian Telstra branded Razr M spat out an unlock code via the motorola unlock website just like the dev edition phones do. It says right on that website if your phone is ineligible you will receive an error. And I got the code, not the error.
Ausdroid also says explicitly they have confirmation Aussie Razr M is unlockable via moto website.
PJcons, I notice the same discussion on whirlpool, seriously if you don't believe this answer then go and try it yourself, no point asking repeatedly esp as you are confusing people here who have the US CDMA verizon version not the aussie GSM/LTE1800 Telstra version. Also, there is already an existing thread (me lol) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964862
However re: actually unlocking, I can't confirm the last step i.e. actually doing it. The only reason I haven't actually gone ahead is because there is actually no point at this stage as we don't have access to any remotely mature custom ROMs, and the only CWM floating around is not confirmed working on our variant (though as long as it doesn't touch the radio, theoretically it should). But I'm reluctant to do anything without having a stock Telstra fastboot image as a last resort roll-back option, years and years of flashing droids has taught me that if nothing else. Theoretically though I do not see how it could possibly fail if you have the token.

But what are the changes that causes the lock down.
Is it a Physical chip that has been changed or is it a 128Bit encryption that stops ppl from Unlocking the Verizon version ?
Pretty sure it's encryption... I remember seeing an article on how it was done, but no idea where...

I think I read somewhere that Motorola uses 256bit encryption, but I could have dreamed that for all I know.

1) It's impossible to understand anything you're trying to say.
2) English only.
3) Your pic is down.
4) The MS2 doesn't work on verizon. That's the Droid 2. Period.

my question is if there is a milestone 2 that the bootloader is 70.13? does the Droid 2 also has the same bootloader Milestone 2?
Try asking in Droid 2 or Droid 2 Global forum. It can't be Milestone 2 unless someone changed cover.
