[Q] New Widget Download - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New Widget Download
Hi. I'm having very big issues with my new myTouch 4G.
This whole downloading of widgets worked for me couple of times since I bought this phone. I was able to download some widgets for my GMail, called "Gmail 2.3", also "Facebook Android", "Stopwatch 2.3", and many other ones (games as well). The way that I would download them is: I would long press on any empty portion of any screen/tab or even go a totally empty tab, after I would get a little menu with choice of out of four (4) items -"Shortcuts", "Widgets", "Folder", and "Wallpaper" and all four (4) items have a little arrow down - button (to select it). Since I would want to install some widget on my screen, I tap arrow-down next to "Widgets". It brings me up all available widgets that are already preinstalled on my device (T-Mo or HTC puts them there), if you don't find a widget which you need, out of preinstalled ones (and most likely you won't because there are 30 of them there TOPS), you can press on "Get more widgets" (in the list along other 4 choices) and it allows you to do a word search/title for a widget that you want. BUT for me - it doesn't open up that search box, anymore. Instead it says in white letters "Unable to download widgets. Tap to try again.” Now when I call T-Mo they don't understand what is it that I want to do. They tell me, how you can ONLY use widgets that are pre-installed on the device, and it never allows you to download any more. I had this issue once before, and I got scared so I exchanged my device. I just bought it back then; only 6 days had passed, so I was still able to return/exchange it. I was within the return/exchange period back then, but not now. And the problem is back
Do I need to install some update somehow? Or what do I do?? If YES for the update, then how do I install one?? This has to be some issue on T-Mo's side, because this is another phone already.
Thank You All! For your help!

Thank You for moving it.
ANYBODY with any ideas?? Or maybe this works or not for somebody else??
Anybody else BUT me has the same problem?? Can anybody add any widget they would like?????? Come On People. Am I alone with this problem???

That 'download more widgets' message is an HTC add-in. From what I've experienced, they usually create a portal to allow users to download new widgets for their HTC Sense skinned phones. However, it appears that this portal is either not created yet, or is not functioning.
You need to use the market and search for 'widgets'. Then they'll show up in your widget list.
Market is for widgets and apps, 'download more widgets' is for HTC sense widgets.

Thank You. If I understood correct - you are telling me to search "Market Place" for................ ??? What again??
I want to be able to search for more available widgets. It worked for me when the phone was first released. I bought it 2 hours after it hit my local T-Mo stores. Facebook notified me.

The down-arrow on my Evo still works. brings up a lot more HTC widgets, so we know their portal is working!

No, sorry, i don't, but in terms of better twitter apps, have you looked at SWIFT ? It's been the new rising star in twitter clients on android.
On a second note: Since I have not yet received my Desire, could you pleas post either screenshots or a list of settings/preferences that DO show for Friendfeed? I ask specifically about setting intervals for refreshing the stream. Does it provide separate refresh rates for each of the feeds, or just one main one, or none at all?
I ask because this is predictably going to be the biggest battery drainer on the Desire, so I am just getting a leg up before getting my device :;
Sorry - i spoke too son and not even checked out:
http://levelupstudio.com/touiteur
looks like a great twitter client -- and what i just found out is it supports the "twitlonger" API, which makes it, to me all the more useful.

Why twitlonger?
http://www.twitlonger.com/about
Ok, my wife is the one with the Desire, but from using latest version on my Hero.
Just go to Settings> Accounts & Sync
Click on Twitter, then simply click on 'Remove Account'
That will remove all twitter from FriendFeed.
Then simply use whatever other app you want, either by clicking on the app icon to start it, or by installing the app's widget if it has one.

Thanks for this, but I would like to continue using the friend feed, just not use peep as the default app when opening a post from the friend feed.
@quicksite - No settings I can see for refreshing at all...Battery life was pretty poor yesterday, but i did play non stop with my new toy for like 8 hours

FB Update Sometimes say Via HTC Sense?

Hey guys, I googled my question and XDA-d it pretty hard before asking. So if I missed it, my apologies. I just noticed that sometimes when I post pictures from my "albums" it will say "uploaded via HTC Sense" below it, which is badass of course. Other times though, it wont say via HTC Sense. Its really 50/50. Uploading a picture or Status update Via the FB app for Windows Mobile will say "Uploaded via Windows Mobile," obviously. Just wondering if anyone has found a for sure way to update their status (and upload pics) so it says "Uploaded via HTC Sense" instead of Windows Mobile all the time? Not that Im ashamed or anything....
Thanks if anyone else has had this "problem" and has any advice.
*note*
I did try the following link but nothing I didnt already know or tried.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696007
did you try just using the facebook integration in sense to do the updates and uploads? and not using the windows mobile application ever? Just an idea, not tried it myself but it may do the trick.
I was aware the facebook integration and the windows mobile app were the same thing? Cuz the HD2 did come with the FB app but if there is a status update somewhere in sense Ill search more for it. Thanks for the tip
nope they are slightly different. Two ways of doing the same thing.
Found it. If anyone else in the future needs help with this-
For status updates:
- go to your contacts
- Click "Me" (or whatever your FB account is linked to on your contacts list)
- Scroll to the bottom and click on the area below "Facebook" and it will show "Whats on your mind" (status update) and the button to "share"
I just did two updates within the hour and both show "Posted via HTC Sense"
Always sexy.
Good stuff.
Thanks MEPH for motivating me to look a little more. Hope it helps someone else in the future.

Mine does it too... AFAIK HTC is having some speedbumps with this phones launch, but they should be ironed out relatively soon...
Plus we just got full root... one of the devs will prolly come up with some sort of fix (assuming its a problem on the handset vs their server)

So you say "Wait, and it'll be resolved"?
I just bought my MT4G today, and I'm experiencing the same problem. I have not been able to download any widgets yet, so I'm looking forward to this working for me.

Does your DHD do this too?

Load up the people widget.
It'll ask you to select a profile like favourite, co-worked or similar. Select favourite for now. Add someone to that fovourite prifile by pressing the + button on the bottom of the widget.
Now that person is stuck as a favourite forever. There is noting you can do to remove them. If go into the details for that person it will say Group = favourites. Go to edit the contact to remove them from the group and you won't have the option.
Sense 1.72 is one buggy bit of software! That with my SD card dismounting every five minutes, weather not updating my location and the sms bug, i kinda wish i hadn't upgraded.
(Note to self, only upgrade a month after release after keeping an eye on this forum)

Yeah I noticed that "feature" in the People widget too. Which is why after about the first two minutes of using it I decided that the People widget is useless and removed it from my desktop.
It amazes me how such a basic feature as removing a contact could be missed by the HTC developers. Almost as bad as making a top-end phone and then deciding to put an arse-end speaker in it.

Totally not true. You need to 'click' on the person's name (not the picture) then it brings the contact card and on the bottom you have 'edit contact'. Select that and then just edit the group by selecting 'favorites'. Easy as that.
Oh, and by the way - Sense rules .

Thats my point, editing it doesn't work. despite removing a contact from a group, it will still appear in the widget even though you have deleted them from the group. Try it...
Pick the widget up and drop it on the edit box, the one next to the remove box. Now tap favourites. Job done. I admit its not the most intuitive way of doing things but the functionality isn't missing as you claim.

I did and it works as it is supposed to. Removes the contact from the widget the moment it's removed from the favorites group. BTW I use the widget with the grid positioned contacts (the first one)
Edit: maybe you have uninstalled something from the preloaded HTC software or disabled something. The widget works.

Make sure you are not editing a linked contact, that has happened to me before.

It won't work if you do it like that. What you need to do is go to the People app, go the Groups tab/column (for me it's on the right of the individual contacts tab), go to Favorites, touch Menu, select "Delete group member" and then mark the group member you wish to remove. Confirm and then it'll effectively delete the said group member from the list and the People widget.
I have Android version 2.2.1, updated on December 23. I live in the Philippines but I believe my Desire HD is from Spain as even the box and the Manual is in Spanish and I got the update for 2.2.1.

I use the widget with the grid contacts taking up one homescreen. =) And no, I think he's just... confused. I mean, I guess there is a bug but I seriously have not thought of doing it his way and the contact is certainly not stuck forever as a Favorites member.

No, I do it exactly the way he describes with one exception - it works. I think he can't figure out how to remove someone from a group. He just needs to unselect the favorites group. HTC Sense gives you the option for one contact to be in several groups (which is great), and so there is no option 'none' in group selection menu.

Updates in the 2.3.4 leaked Update (Updated with more info)

UPDATE FYI: As far as I can tell from what I am hearing, this update is the same as the one in SOAK right now. I do not know if this is true, but the version numbers add up. Once the update goes live, we will see what happens.
I figured I would put this little change guide up for some of those who are on the fence about updating. So far I have updated and couldn't be happier. I will continue to update this when I find a new change or feel like going into more detail on some of these items.
Changes in 2.3.4
- Revamped UI: New MotoBlur, Different Color Scheme, New Icons
- New Apps: Rich Location, New Tasks App, Music Store, Help Center, Mobile HotSpot
- Updated Apps: Gallery App, Camera App, Camcorder App, Email App, Task Manager, Text Messaging App, Music App, Calendar App
- Profiles option: Choose between Everyday, Work, and Weekend
- New Settings: Media Audio Effects, SD Card Notifications, In-Pocket Detection, Unknown Sources and others
Motoblur -
- UI: The update implements the New Motoblur that has been seen on a few other phones. Included in this UI update is the ability to use multiple profiles. The Menu Dock has changed along with some locations of settings and menus.
We Also have some new Icons for several programs such as the Internet Brower. The Transition screens and the lock screen effect has also changed. When you turn off the screen now, it acts like the Gingerbread animation (CM7). The apps drawer also has sorting features now via a drop down menu.
Update: New feature added to the Notification Bar. You can now remove individual notifications from the list without affecting the rest of the notifications.
New Apps -
- Rich Locations: A new app similar to Google Maps that gives you local places, couples, and even local singles (match.com). You can even view local singles profiles.
- New Tasks App: Included is a tasks app that is rather quick and easy to use. Gives the option to send notifications to the task bar, and persistant reminders. Several different options for priority. No sync to google tasks though.
- Music Store: Well this one is rather obvious and if you don’t know how to use an app store or music store, please return your phone and purchase a dumb phone.
- Help Center: Guided Tours, Tips and tricks, User guide and FAQS.
- Mobile Hotspot: I have not tested this one, but from the menu options you are able to manage the hotspot information and the actual devices allowed to connect by typing in their mac addresses.
Updated Apps -
- Gallery App: Now shows Facebook photos, Camera Roll, My Library, Online Photos from Facebook. New Layout.
- Camera App: Changed the buttons to match the rest of MotoBlur
- Camcorder App: The HD video can now record more than 30 minutes at a time (using the full size of the storage medium), extra click to turn on the LED lights.
- Email, Calendar, and Text Messenger: Just UI improvements
- Task Manager: Seems to have small improvements, but basically the same as before with just a UI revamp
- Music App: Similar Changes as the Camera App. However there is now an option that allows Moto to identify your music and send “anon” info about your music preferences to Moto.
Multiple Profiles-
- Profiles: You now have three profiles to choose from (work, Everyday, and Weekends). As far as I can tell the same ringtones, silent settings, and what not apply to all three profiles and can not be individually set for each profile. It looks as if the Home Screens are the only things that change with the profile (widgets, background, app shortcuts).
The widgets in multiple profiles along with any live wall paper may contribute to battery drain similar to using multiple launcher. I have not tested this as I need my phone and do not want to waste battery testing it when I am still using it. If anyone wants to give it a go and post their results, please do so.
New Settings-
- Media Audio Settings: Multiple settings that include bass boost. May have been on the Froyo version but I have never seen them.
- SD Card Notifications: You can finally turn off the damned sound notification when your SD card is added or removed and when you boot the phone.
- In-Pocket Detection: It locks the phone when you put it in your pocket.
- Unknown Sources Checkbox: Yup it’s finally here and you can now check it and install the amazon app store without having to root your phone.
- Windows Media Sync: Allows you to choose where to sync your media from your PC.
- Secure Network Notification: You can now be notified when a secure network is available
- Peer to Peer (Ad-Hoc) Channel: Choose a channel to setup a Adhoc network.
- Text Message Reply: Gives the option to turn off the Send a text message to a phone caller.
- Contacts Settings: Allows you to change which contacts are visable. Rather nice if you ask me
Updates:
- SD Card Data Encryption: Finally a feature we all wanted!
- Device Encryption: No more police officers looking at your phone...at least in some districts.
- Blue tooth Bypass: Allows you to bypass your bluetooth device and use the voice commands on the phone vs. the bluetooth.
- Advanced IPSec VPN: Not entirely certain if it works or not. We all know it didn't before, so if anyone can test it and let me know, that would be great.

For the most part, rich locations is an rss feed app mixed with a gps mapping system that gives you local information such as restaurants, coffee shops, local singles ads, and coupons from various websites such as yelp, match.com and so on.
Sort of like places on google maps but with a twist. I doubt I will use it often around town, but it would come in handy when I was on vacation and what not.

I am enjoying my update for what it's worth.
New Blur!
I have to say, I kind of liked Motoblur's functionality in Froyo, but it was just so damn slow... The new Motoblur (or whatever they want to call it now) is finally usable, and looks very nice
Some parts seem a bit slower now (e.g., the integrated webpart in Pulse), but still very smooth.
I don't regret updating - finally a Moto Android worth having!
it's awesome.
I am really liking the new screen off animation.
Anyone's Timer section of the "Alarm & Timer" app not working?
