Vibrant 4g - Vibrant General

So what if we swapped the antennas with the antenna from the epic 4g into the vibrant?
T-mobile vibrant 4-g!!!
Humor me..

except then you'd have to use sprint's ****ty network. which is as much '4g' as t-mob's hspa+.
a g2 radio on the other hand....

Except different networks different technology.... actually you have a good idea. Pull out the antenna from the vibrant, then duct tape the epic internals in its place

wait so we can just change the antennas without messing with software?... So we can take or buy a mt4g antenna solder it on in our vibrant and will get hspa+ speeds?

you are not making any sense
you are not making any sense inside is a wire for an antenna about 4-5 inches long. The antenna isn't the problem. it would be the radio and how the algorithm is configured to see the signal. The real benefit is in the latency improvement between station to station. So, in theory. the vibby should be able to have its software and radio reconfigured to accept the faster signal. Bear in mind My signal where I live is 3-4mb down and 1.5-2mb up. That is fast enough to do almost anything. So where you live and what kind of and how new the towers are around is probably going bear heavily on speed regardless of the phone.

Haha, guys it was just speculation. I figured that the radio could be flashed but I didn't know if the antenna's had different chips which allowed them to connect to hspa+ or not. Just some thought that popped into my head.

Vibrant
Samsung is actually planning on releasing a vibrant 4g that should be able to take advantage of the full HSPA+ by mid 2011

remember guys... "theres an app for that" and "droid does"

Are you people playing dumb or are actually dumb?
Just replacing a antenna won't do crap but make you unable to recieve ANY network at all.
All carries have their own type of antennas, and there are other things used to support and make them work.
Its like me saying i'm going to take out the CPU of my vibrant, and put it in my iphone 4 to make it faster.
IT JUST ISNT POSSIBLE UNLESS IF YOU REPLACE TONS OF OTHER THINGS AS WELL.

GA users...4g?

I'm in warner Robinson (mid ga) and appear to have 4g now. Speed test is around 5mbps but doesn't seem faster. Weird. Can anyone confirm this?
I'd like to know about this, I'm not in that area but will be soon!
http://clear.com/coverage
Looks like your in the testing phase and they are starting to roll out. Enjoy!
Yeah, it doesn't look like it's perfected yet in my area...in Atlanta 4g is amazing. Still sketchy even though I'm connected and getting upwards of 3mbps, it doesn't seem completely stable yet. Great news for us though. Hopefully testing will roll into "getting **** done" lol

usually once the dark green gets on the map its 'official' and you will be able to actually connect indoors
This actually pisses me off somewhat. Looking at the map theyre installing in Macon, Warner Robins and LaGrange. LaGrange has a population of what, 50K? But they cant fill in the million gaps in coverage in Atlanta???
I agree. Atl is hit or miss with 4g coverage. Some spots, I've hit 11 mbs though. Inside its another story.
I'm just dumbfounded that Augusta doesn't have Sprint 4G yet. Hell, we just finally got T-Mobile HSPA+.
I was actually at the sprint store off of Russell Parkway this weekend getting my wife a new phone and asked about 4g. Like most people have said, they are definitely in a test phase right now, with no official announcement. The lady i talked to did say some areas have 4g coverage. I turn on my EVO's 4g in the store and got 7mbs download speed versus 1mb 3g. Unfortunately i'm never on that side of town and I don't get coverage at my house south by HWY96.
I get pretty descent 4g speeds down in Henry Co. On average of 6-8mbps. I was a little surprised 4G worked at my house but it does..

Its also around the sandy run and moody road area. Also around Macon GA. I caught it near vineville and hardeman area recently.
I'm in Canton as well. I only get 4g on 575 starting at exit 11 going south but it's hit or miss like everyone else.

New Sprint Network

We all know their network sucks right now, including myself, but Sprint is working on this. They are rolling out what's called "Sprint Vision" (and forgive my lack of technical know-how) basically they are adding some "boxes" with multiple "cards" that can be inserted in them allowing for better/faster coverage in multiple directions that can easily be fixed if one goes down by simply replacing this "card" (something to this degree). The full "vision" has not been rolled out yet and is mainly the cause why the speeds suck right now.
Oh God.... This sounds like they're trying to whip up a janky version of a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System).

I read the announcement on this... its actually pretty good. The towers will now only need one refrigerated smaller box to do 4g 3g and 1x(saves energy and space) they will use fiber cables to the top instead of copper for less signal lose. They will need less towers because this one can do all of it.

What's wrong with this setup? The cable co's use it, and in most instance it works well. The issues occur when there's over saturation - not enough blades to handle the load. Speeds go down, noise goes up, speeds go down more so... Perpetual cycle.
In fact, I recently had an issue with my cable provider where during prime time hours, speeds would drop 25-40% or more. At first look it would appear to be a capacity issue, but in my talks with the head of local operations, that wasn't the case. Plenty of capacity in this area to go around. Turned out during prime time, due to additional load, a failing card/blade (not the one I was connected to) was generating noise, which ultimately was causing my issues. They replaced the offending part, returning my speeds back to 20mbps at all times of the day.
Bottom line, who cares what method they use to increase speeds and bandwidth, so long as it works and is consistent.
Well it makes sense here..whatever it is...they might have it done in my area of Chicago....because a couple weeks ago 3g improved in a major way. Data downloads fast here now.

I'm not an ATT but reception was fine, but mainly depended on your modem. Some modems gave great reception and data speeds, but gave poor battery, while some gave mediocre reception, with great battery.
As long as you live in a area that has wcdma 1900, the vibrant should work fine on at&t.

I have found that I get the best signal when driving over 120mph. My emails loads like you wouldn't believe, and text messages seem to send and receive much better at those speeds. Although the new KB5 modem may let you go a little slower. Haven't tested it as I drank too much before I got in the car after flashing it, and I forgot which pocket I left my phone it to see.

Yeah, except Sprint was the last one in the spectrum pool, so they ended up with the 1900 mhz spectrum, which doesn't penetrate buildings and cars as well as the 800 mhz spectrum that the other folks are playing with. And don't get me started with the 2.5 gHz spectrum that WiMax is living on.
+1 on crap signal everywhere
+1 on the 1900 PCS band being garbage
+1 on 2.5 ghz being even worse
Higher the freq, higher the loss....
I carry an Epic, a Captivate and a 7" G-Tab. I keep my epic permanently roamed on Verizon for voice services, leave the tab on Sprint for unlimited data and the cappy is for work. Verizon by far has the best call quality and highest signal levels. Even when in a spot with full bars on all of them, big red calls sound the clearest.

Network Vision is Sprint's attempt to become the most dependable (if not best) network by 2013. They're converting EACH of their towers to multinode frequencies. So, each tower's radius will be increased along with the amount of capacity it can handle. Those areas where you have1 bar should increase dramatically (and it should all be done by 2013-2014).

I can appreciate what they're doing to fix this problem and I appreciate you giving this info. But like I said in a similar conversation yesterday, I can't wait until 2013 to make a reliable phone call. Patience is one thing, but waiting 2 years to make a phone call from my desk is a bit much. Once winter hits I won't want to go stand in freezing tempretures to save 20 bucks a month on my phone bill.
Edit: I know this pic is blurry, but it shows 1 bar of Sprint vs full bars of AT&T. If AT&T can make it in here, I deserve at least 2 or 3 bars from Sprint damnit!

I was in a building today where the opposite is true. Zero service from Verizon and 4 bars from Sprint. It just seems funny to me when people make these complaints. If you don't get service where you spend a majority of your time, you picked the wrong provider. If AT&T was the only company that had good service where I live, i'd be paying a lot more for cell service. Fortunately for me, all the major providers are pretty equal in Portland, so I can go cheap lol

I don't think that will be possible. The part of the 3G spectrum Sprint owns is not very good at penetrating buildings. The best you could hope for is that with a stronger signal strength they'll be able to compensate for that technical limitation, but it won't be as good as what other carriers offer in terms of building penetration.

You can always put a Wilson wide band antenna on the roof and run a wire down to connect to the phone for a strong signal. You will need a pigtail to match the phone or use a small whip from a wi-fi router to couple the signal to the phone if it doesn't have an antenna connector. Keep the leadin wire to 20' or less to limit loss. Here's an antenna you can get on Amazon that works well for all cellular bands.

Anyone recommend a good repeater/signal booster?

NO NO NO!!!!!
If you haven't already plugged it into your phone DON'T. It could damage your phone's internal antenna and void the warranty. READ THE WARRANTY BOOKLET THAT COMES WITH YOUR PHONE. I tried it on my phone (LGC800 mytouch Q) and it broke the internal antenna, and I had to buy a new phone. Look it up on Google its not a once in a blue moon thing, either.

I tried it on my phone (LGC800 mytouch Q) and it broke the internal antenna, and I had to buy a new phone. Look it up on Google its not a once in a blue moon thing, either.
