Brazilian Galaxy Tab has digital TV tuner - Galaxy Tab General

Remember that empty space in the teardown of the Galaxy Tab?
Apparently its where the digital TV tuner goes.
The Brazilian Galaxy Tab is one of the few versions in the world to have digital TV tuner built in.
Here is a video of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHrzdd4eDNM
EDIT: Forgot about the Korean version.

The korean version has it too I believe.
T-DMB or something.

VERY cool.
But..
Bah, the US models are /really/ being cut down in functionality.

It'd be great to check where that tuner is. Maybe it's hidden, maybe it can be added later, I guess it probably won't happen but I won't believe it until someone takes apart a brazilian galaxy tab and show me that damn tuner

Nobody in North America is using DMB though...so it'd be worthless here, or anywhere besides Brazil and South Korea.

And Norway. Unfortunately, the Tab was not released here with DMB functionality. No antenna either, so not sure if it would matter if it had the chip anyway.

WOW
Im amazed how edition has this tablet...
L;M;Sprint;T-mobile...;P1010..

Thats amazing. But i *think* it says it pick up not only digital but ALSO analog channels!

Yep
I have this model, the signal is very poor indoor but I think it's better outside, it has analog and digital reception.

Which SGS has all the components?

After reading through this forum on many many topics, it came to my attention that localized version of SGS for America (USA/Canada) seems to have missing "features" like camera/flash, smaller storage, but they have the addition of the Gyroscope, where the international version I9000 has everything but the Gyroscope, but is compensated by the other sensors which the I9000 actually has 4 sensor instead of 6...
So, in the end I'm still not sure which model is better, but it'll be good to know.
Does anyone have a side by side comparison list of the different sub models for the SGS ?
I've already ordered the European/Asian I9000 version, I'm quite sure it's the best one out there, however i might be wrong, specially the CDMA sprint version has the Keyboard/4G that non of the other versions have.
4G is not a biggie as the North American infrastructure doesn't even support it yet, but having a Keyboard is a huge bonus, but i'm sure it'll weight more.
Why can't we just have it all in one single version?
The Epic 4G is the ONLY model that has all the features +LED Flash +Sliding Keyboard +4G modem
The other 3 models are basically the same in that they don't have front facing cameras but the Verizon fascinate model has a flash on the back.

Gyroscope ? Which model has this ?
It's not *actually* a gryo. It's using an accelerometer and geo-magnetic sensor together that can determine 6-axis of control.
And all 4 versions of the phone have this six-axis sensor.
Edit: That isn't to say that this method of six-axis control isn't as good as the iPhone. I honestly don't know how it fares against it. The only thing you should take away from this is that it's actually more efficient. The iPhone uses four sensors to: Accelerometer/Magnetometer/Gyro/Proximity. Whereas the Galaxy S uses 3 sensors: Accelerometer/Magnetometer(+gryo-ish axis)/proximity.
As far as I can see, it's just a gyro smashed together with a magnetometer. Something like this: http://www.global.yamaha.com/news/2006/20060726.html
So, I want to say that it would deliver the same fidelity as the iPhone 4's Gyro, however, I couldn't tell you. Also, I don't think that Android has an API's that currently make use of full six-axis control. So developers would have to do it all themselves.

Actually if you give swype a try you'll find a physical keyboard to be just bulk... Sprint's does seem to have everything: Flash, keyboard, and front camera... I read something about it not having a lot of internal memory though.
@kolyan
Hope you didn't take offense.
@aeo087
You are correct. The Epic 4G is said to have 1GB of usable mem and the Verizon Fascinate is only supposed to have 2GB. Obviously they can all be expandable with MicroSD storage.
Also the keyboard is a negative to my wife. She just like candy-bar style.

The answer is none.
Please be specific with your question.
but what exactly is "all components"?
AT&T 16gb, No FFC, No flash, gyroscope
Tmobile 16gb, No FFC, No flash, gyroscope
Verizon 2gb, No FFC NOT SURE, flash, gyroscope, Wi-fi Hotspot supported
Sprint 1gb, Yes FFC NOT SURE, Flash, gyroscope, Keyboard, wi-fi hotspot supported
International 8/16gb, FFC, no Flash, gyroscope (not sure)
As you can see there is something missing in each one.

only US model with a FFC is the Sprint one. and afaik the Sprint one also has the wifi hotspot feature enabled as well albeit extra per month
and reason why they took the FFC out of the ATT Verizon and T-Mobile ones is because those networks dont support video calls. end of story

well its more an issue of bandwidth, 3G can technically support it, but isnt enabled on T-Mobile AT&T or Verizon atm. T-Mobile will most likely be next in line considering they are HSPA+ 21mbps which is faster than WiMax. Plus they just recently launched the Nokia E73 Mode which has a FFC, just video calls not supported currently.
EDIT: My theory as to why ATT Verizon and Tmobile left out the FFC is because unlike the iPhone they cant dictate whether or not its a wifi only feature because of the nature of Android. So since they dont currently have the bandwidth they left it out instead of leaving it in.

well like I said bandwidth issue at the moment. By the end of the year with HSPA+ available to most of its network I think it'll be more commonplace.
How important do you think the camera flash is? I want to take decent photos but don't know how much the flash plays into that.
Also the Epic 4G is the only one with a dedicated camera button.
How do you think the sliding keyboard be? I'd be concerned that it'd be too flimsy and break easily. I'd like a keyboard but not one that is weak.
All in all the Sprint Epic looks like the one for me. Except for the keyboard question.

the international i9000 doesn't have 3g 850 (it has 900 instead of 850). Also, the digital tv thing will only work in brazil due to their tv infrastructure (from what I've heard).

IPhone goes for similar prices, it's due to three things, last just being a rumor:
taxes
*competition/market size for high end phones @1000 you wont have many *customers (percentage of population-wise), adding an extra 400 won't cost you that many but will raise your profitability by a lot
*bundled services (rumor)
Maybe the needed hardware (except the antenna... obviously) is already in the rests of galaxy s's? Someone has compared the disassembly of both versions? Maybe it can be activated some day lol
If it's in there, hope it is dvb-h (i'm in europe)
this price is not uncommon at all here in brazil. All no-contract phones goes around 1000 US$.
I have tested the brazilian galaxy s and tv reception is fantastic. Worked flawlessly inside a shopping center.
Here in Argentina either. I bought my unlocked SGS (european version) for 900 bucks.

Gave up on phone on Tab but New 7" Tablet from Shenzhen can make phone calls

Hi guys... after returning my Tmo Tab a couple of weeks ago, I still occasionally do searches for tablets with phone capabilities and lo and behold... I found one tonight. It's called the Kinpad I600...
Shanzai.com did a favorable reivew...
http://www.shanzai.com/market-mayhe...he-7-kinpad-i600-tablet-or-is-it-a-phone.html
It's $399 through merimobiles.com ... a website that is well-reviewed from US buyers.
This page lists the specs (altho it does not have a USB port as is listed here)
http://www.merimobiles.com/Kinpad_I600_7_Android_2_2_Flash_10_1_Capacitive_p/meri0540.htm
It is Android 2.2... merimobiles reports it will get 2.3 update.... and uses these radios:
Built in 3G WCDMA UMTS/HSDPA (2100MHz), GSM/EDGE (850,900,1800,1900MHz)
Merimobiles is sold out now, but they are supposed to be in stock at the end of December.
It has a 1024x600 capacitive screen, front-facing camera, 30-pin processor out, 4200 mAh battery, and a Freescale IMX515 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor.
I'd appreciate your thoughts... I'm thinking it looks good, and it worked well in the shanzai video... it also has a 1 yr warranty.
Not too much to spend for a functioning 7" tabphone?
This doesn't have 1700 mhz support so no tmo 3g if you go this route.
Yeah, I know... it'd have to be AT&T...
I'm just wondering if it'd be cheaper to get this than getting the AT&T and then flashing, etc etc...
It does have access to the full Android Market... but I doubt it would be upgraded to Honeycomb...

I thought AT&T 3G was on 850MHz and 1900MHz - if that's the case, this won't work on AT&T 3G.
This looks pretty good from the video - definitely borrowed its looks from the Galaxy Tab.

Did you see the specs I posted above? It has quad band, including 850 and 1900... so it will work on AT&T...
I'm just wondering about the freescale processor... never heard of it before... it's an ARM 8 so should be okay I guess.

IMHO, what you've been told by AT&T is utter rubbish.
If what AT&T told you was true, you could all be using GSM HTC Desires, or HTC Desire HDs on AT&T 3G over there because they are both quad-band GSM supporting 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. You don't though because they only support HSPA/WCDMA over 900/2100 MHz.
There's no difference here.
I'm not arguing - I'm offering sincere advice.

Dave
I was just reading a review of the Nexus S... and it has the same bands listed for it and they say what you are saying... that the Nexus S won't get AT&T 3G.... I will check with merimobiles or shanzai to see if what they have posted is correct... and if so won't be buying.
Thanks for the heads up... won't be buying it til I know for sure.
isn't att's 850/1900, which means it wont work right?
AT&T 3G is not on 2100MHz. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility (I assume this info is correct)
I would take a good look at the display before I buy such a tablet. I've seen some tablet (and actually used some) and my major disappointment was always the bad readability of the screen. I ended up with the Tab because I thought it had the best readable screen of all android tablets on the market right now. (I think it is also better than the iPad, but that's a different story).
BTW I noticed that the software on this tablet is very basic. I don't think they did put much effort in addapting the apps to the 7" screen. Did you see the dialer? I think it is just the standard android dialer with just a little adjustment by displaying the keys in the center. They didn't even bother to make the keys larger.
The Tab comes with a collection of apps specially written for the tablet, with Honeycomb-ish layout switching when rotating the device from portrait to landscape mode. Also they put a real effort in making the "built-in" apps compatible with the 7" screen. That's a big plus if you appreciate it.
So to be fair, I think it is not really a tab killer. But if you don't need the extra tab apps and the display is good, it could be well worth the money.
Just my 2 cents

SGS 3 for AT&T and TMobile USA

Wow, if the pictures end up being accurate, that would mean that they kept/plan on keeping the home button, which would be great news imo.
Edit: Disregard. Generic images. Too early-- can't read.
Still looks like speculation to me so don't get your hopes up just yet.

We’re expecting the Samsung Galaxy S3 to arrive on the big 4 carriers here in the US, but unfortunately, nothing’s been announced yet. Well, here’s some good news for AT&T and T-Mobile customers. Both versions of the GS3 have just made their way through the Bluetooth SIG, revealing not much other than their BT capabilities, and corresponding model numbers (generic images have been used). All this article told us is their model numbers really.

Ah, good catch. It's still early.
I was just amazed that they already have the model #'s for the North America already. Makes me believe what Samsung said about June of this year as having models ready for release, which is shockingy fast comapred to the previous Galaxy line. Seems Sammy is on fire. I know the pics were of the generic model and hope they keep it like that and not make it buttonless as previously. Personally I dont care as I am getting the Int'l version but I know alot of people will wait for the Carrier branded versions.
I'm just hoping that If we do get the Qualcomm S4 instead of the Exynos, That they will throw 2gb of ram in there, or something just to make us feel a bit better that we aren't getting the quad core versions. We always get the dumbed down versions.

Yea. Sad that LTE and AWS compatability is still a problem for Exynos. I'll take the 2gb of ram though.

Galaxy Note II ...with a TV antenna!!!

^ I got the video from the review thread and wanted to start a separate discussion since the review threat isn't for conversing. Anyways, I watched the video and was impressed with the split screen option, but then completely wowed by the tv antennae and being able to watch live tv. Will the American variants come with the antenna as well? If not, will the International version be compatible with T-Mobile's HSPA+ network and the US's TV channels?

I'm pretty sure they are only available in Korea

If that's really the case, is the Korean version compatible with American TV airwaves and with T-Mobile's HSPA+ network?

Nope.
I can confirm that the American Galaxy Note II will absolutely NOT have the TV antenna. As a matter of fact, every Galaxy (S, SII, SII HD, SIII, Note) ever made released in Korea has a TV antenna. Even in Korea, the TV broadcast work on different technologies among the 3 different carriers LG, SK, KT so just imagine the difficulties and the impossibilities of getting it working in the US.

product of korea
Ever since the digital ATSC changeover I've been waiting for a smartphone to come out with a basic antenna and ATSC tuner. There is no excuse to not include it on ph/tablets, in particular. The manufacturers don't seem to agree.
