WIFI disconnecting when dormant HULK SMASH! - G2 and Desire Z General

Didn't see any posts on this, I'm sure someone will be more than happy to call me an idiot and post a link though.
Whenever I leave my phone dormant, like screen off for awhile, say a half hour or so and I come back to pick it up it's switched off wifi and gone back to mobile data. I have to disable and reenable wifi to pick up the signal again. I know about the setting in Menu>Settings>Wireless & Network Settings>Wi-Fi settings>Menu>Advanced>Wi-Fi sleep policy, but I have it set to never. It still disconnects itself. It's as simple as turning off wifi from the widget and reenabling it, but it's starting to drive me insane doing it all the time. You guys have a fix? A setting I'm missing somewhere?

Might be a bug.. try using the WiFi Keep Alive app in Market, its meant for scenarios like yours..

I use WIFI Lock from the market and it works great.... Give it a try.

or do this to keep it on without an app download
menu > settings > wireless&networks > wifi settings > Menu > advanced
then change the wifi sleep policy to never.

I had this problem on my G1 for a while until my wife picked one up that did the same thing. I tried numerous ROMs trying to fix it. It ended up being my router settings. I don't remember what it was as that was over a year ago but maybe look there.

I've already done this, said so in my post, but thanks for suggesting.
I'll check out those apps, thanks again.

Wifi keep alive doesn't seem to work for me, and that other one doesn't seem to do anything but set the sleep policy to never, which it already is.

I am having this problem, too. I have tried it on several routers, but it always disconnects when the phone is sleeping. I have the WiFi sleep set to "never," and I am running CM 6.1. It drives me crazy. In a similar thread for the N1, there was a Broadcom driver problem in the AOSP kernel. It might be something similar here, too.

Im on the Desire Z and I too have the same problem. It's quite annoying. The "Never" disconnect option is chosen and it still wont stay connected.

Well, after having no wifi issues with the stock rom I am now having this issue with CM6. On my G1, I was able to adjust router settings and fix this but I am unable to find a fix on the G2.
I have wiped and reflashed. It does it whether I am on a fresh install and no apps restored or fully restored after wipe. I have messed with my router. I have messed with my phone settings. I have tried market apps. I even went back to stock and had no issues but as soon as I install CM, wifi sleep policy turns to poo. I really dont want to go through this again like I did with the G1. It took me months to finally fix it on the G1. I would rather go back to stock than go through this again.
I am begging anyone who may know how to fix this to give us some insight. I love CM6 but the margin between it and stock is not enough for me to have to restart wifi because I looked away from the phone for a minute and when coming out of sleep my wifi is gone.

Wifi Keeps Turning Itself On

Ok about a couple hours ago I noticed my wifi would turn itself on multiple times, and I turn it off and it keeps coming on, I think it does it when I put my phone to sleep, im not sure. I think it started happening since I installed the Blue Star 5 theme. Any ideas?
Stupid question... but you don't have Locale installed do you?
Figured I would ask. I have mine set up so that it would automatically fire up my wifi because although I get 3G outside I can't get it through my mighty wooden walls where I live. Go figure. Every so often I guess Locale looses my position and it puts me on and off the network. Pretty annoying. So I disabled that and installed some apps to keep my wifi on even while my phone sleeps. There's a few out there, Wifi Insomnia, Wi-Fi Lock, KeepWiFi are a few that I have experiment with. Although since I have all three installed now... I'm honestly not sure which one I'm using.

Hmmm. Well... maybe try seeing if it does it in safe mode if that doesn't work. If it does it in safe mode too then I dunno. If it doesn't then it's probably an app messing with it.
I heard it could be ShopSavvy that is causing that.
If you have an app like keepwifi that basically keeps your wifi signal on, that might be whats causing it. If not, you might want to try other apps that require things such as internet access or access to settings.
We need an list of apps you have installed. Power Manager will do this also.
I too am having this problem!
Sometime the wifi doesn't stay on and I only knew it was turning on thanks to wifi toggle's symbol at the top.
I am running JF's 1.43 RC9 with root etc etc.
The apps I have installed are:
ASTRO
Download crutch lite
DroidFtp
Droidsans tweak tools
fBook
GPS status
JF updater
Meebo
PapiJump
Picasa
Pkt auctions ebay
Ringdroid
Scrambled net
Shazam
Shopsavvy (my suspisions are on this one!)
Skype
Sms awake
Toggle wifi
Thanks
Phil
Okay, figured out what it is. Its the theme u downloaded. Couple hours ago my g1 started turning on the wifi whenever it felt like it.I figured it was something I downloaded recently but I downloaded apps to check them out& then uninstalled them.apps have no effect after u uninstall them.then u mentioned the theme u just downloaded. Well go figure,I just downloaded the same theme wit a few others today.then my wifi started acting up.concidence? I think not.
Lol let me know how u do.
Hmmm, im not sure if its the theme, someone mentioned the setting on ShopSavvy, after I took it off it hasnt been turning on. I still have the theme on btw, but I modified it, so it may have been ShopSavvy
wifi not turning on
My problem is different my wifi wont turn on? if i start my wifi it will show a message that wifi failed to turn on... Can anyone help me on this
Weird, i had shopsavvy from day one, never encountered such a problem. still have it, and deleted the theme. Now the wifi is back to normal. problem with the G1 is, everyone can have the same problems or issues but different solutions with each device lol. the beauty of the G1.
Btw, does anyone know if the "shake awake" app really kills the battery?

ShopSavvy is a definite cause of this problem. I've been in touch with the developers over it, and they have admitted that there's a problem with the WiFi coming on randomly
they've assured me that the next update will fix it. i hope so, because ShopSavvy was useful until it started doing this
here you go guys............i posted this in the Tethering thread as well. this will fix the issue. it is indeed Shop Savvy, but heres the fix, just copy and pasted from my other post:

I never installed Shopsavvy. So that cant be the problem.
I didnt changed anything today on my phone

yes, this fixes the issue of ShopSavvy randomly switching on the WiFi and disconnecting ongoing sessions, but it completely renders the most useful thing about ShopSavvy useless.
I've been beta testing the latest version of ShopSavvy, and it doesn't seem to be doing this random WiFi anymore. It is also a version of ShopSavvy that is compatible with Cupcake 1.5.

Peep not picking up tweets?

The twitter app on my latest Hero (no.4) doesn't seem to be picking up tweets? Have I accidentally changed a setting somewhere?
check to make sure that you haven't turned off wifi and/or mobile data.
obvisouly if there is no connection to the internet, it won't pick them up. I believe it also suspends until you manually update and then it begins auto checking again
open Peep and press menu > settings
select send receive
make sure that it's not on manual.

I was abroad this weekend and noticed that while on WiFi only (without mobile data) my twitter feed would not update.
Thanks for the replies guys, the Wifi thing might have something to do with it, I set the incidence of replies to every half hour but it didn't make a difference. For some reason the backlight on my screen kept going dim when bringing the phone out of a locked state so I'm going to do a reset and see what happens then.
Are you using a task killer? If so and you kill Peep this will stop the Peep service as well as the application and stop background checking.
if you are only using wifi, you do know that wifi turns off when in standby unless you have changed the advanced wifi settings.....? if you haven't, and your device is in standby, then it won't update!
settings > wireless controlls > wifi settings > menu > advanced > wifi sleep mode
make sure that this is set to stay on when in standby
I think rhedgehog has it.
I should've waited before doing that reset!
EDIT: It does seem silly that if it's switching off the wireless that it doesn't note when it last checked for updates and then update accordingly. Peep was set to check every hour but it hadn't updated for four hours, I guess because the phone had gone into standby after being active for less than an hour.
I didn't like peep looks nice but that's about it. I have been using twidroid its not a hundred 100% perfect but its allot better than peep.

[Q] Wifi Error - Stock DK28

Ran into an issue with wifi on stock DK28. Wifi stopped working after two months on stock DK28. The settings>wireless and network>wifi settings menu shows "Error," and remains unchecked and grayed out, even if I try to toggle wifi on or off.
Other than the occasional reboot, the only changes I've made were to install the DialerOne app and Handcent, though I don't know how those could be related.
I did find these topics on the issue, but no solutions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=851934&highlight=wifi+error
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9630680&highlight=wifi#post9630680
Perhaps I need better search-fu, or just someone who can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance.
Happens all of the time on all of the roms I have tried that use DK28 as a base. One of the most annoying issues I have dealt with.
I've seen people report that, but it hadn't happened to me yet. Did you ever find a workaround?
Happens to me a lot. I find it happens most when I turn WiFi off after loosing my connection (ie leaving the house and then turning it off after I go out of range). This isn't 100% though. A reboot always fixes it. Sometimes an Airplane mode fixes it too, but not always.
I am one fo the fortunate ones that has not ran into this issue.

Airplaine mode and reboots haven't fixed it for me, but a battery pull did.
Thanks for the help, everyone.
It happens to me a lot after I shut off Wifi (as mentioned above).
I just do a power off and power on to fix the problem.
This method avoids having to reboot the phone to re-enable broken WiFi after a period of time.
Temporary fix/workaround is goto > Settings > Wireless and network > Wi-Fi settings > toggle on "Wi-Fi" checkbox and wait for services to restart.
Thanks for the suggestion. I should have explained further in the OP. When the setting showed "Error" I could not toggle Wi-fi on or off, e.g. I couldn't check the box you suggest. The option remained grayed out.
I have had the same issues, although it got to the point this week that it would just not come back even when before I could just click on the greyed out error in wifi settings. Reflashed AGAIN, including the modem with ODIN just for good measure, and now I have not had any trouble at all, which is awesome. Have no clue what is causing it though!
Quick workaround is holding home button to to bring up task manager, going to "RAM" and clearing the level 2.

WiFi issues with GSB v3.8

Seeing as the original thread was so abruptly closed, I guess I'll just ask this here.
I've experienced this from time to time on other versions of GSB, and even on KaosFroyo occasionally, but it has become way more prevalent on v3.8. Every time I turn on WiFi using the power control in the notification bar, the WiFi never seems to connect, even though the "open networks" indicator pops up. This would obviously mean that the WiFi radio is scanning, but the only way that it finally picks up the dedicated networks that I use is to finally go to Settings > Wireless > Manage networks, then the network finally appears and connects. What's up with this?
Like I said, I'm running the latest GSB, and the latest radio ending in .29 I believe. Not that I think it has any bearing, but I'm also running ZeppelinRox's v6 Supercharger.
If I've posted this in the wrong place let me know. Thanks in advance.
Sent from my GSB Eris using the XDA Premium app.
Regardless of the thread being closed, were others seeing the same issue ?
One thought I had was related to the WiFi scan interval,
Code:
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval=xxx
i.e. how often it "looks" for a WiFi connection. It's set in the /system/build.prop file and I've seen numbers from 30 seconds, 45 seconds, and so on. What would happen is if you were NOT in range of a WiFi signal and turned it on, it wouldn't look again for that time period. But, in the case of turning on WiFi and being in range, it should connect quickly and not have to wait for that time period.
Having been a longtime user of GSB I don't recall ever seeing mention of this issue, but of course given the breadth of that thread it is entirely possible.
I'm not thinking it's an issue with the scan interval, as it does notify me of open networks nearby after toggling it on. But instead of automatically connecting to the networks I use at home and away, I still have to manually open WiFi settings for it to pick up and connect. Kinda ruins the whole "automatically" part lol.

Yeah, we've talked about it on the GSB thread. In fact I think I've started several posts about it. There have been GSB releases that were less bothered with this annoyance and some where this happened more frequently.
I too am running GSB v3.8 and I find this happens to me about 50% of the time I turn on WiFi using the notification bar. In those cases where it doesn't connect, I either manually open the WiFi settings screen and turn it off/on again and it'll connect immediately... Or if I leave it alone and come back to check it 10-20 mins later, I'll notice that it connected sometime all on its own.
So it does connect back up, it just takes its time doing so. Who knows? \_O_/
Thanks for the heads up on that bro, I guess I'll just grin and bear it for the time being, at least until I can finally get my hands on the elusive Droid Bionic lol.
Sent from my GSB Eris using the XDA Premium app.
I've had this problem on several versions of GSB, including 3.8 but I'm not sure why. For me a wipe and reflash has always fixed it.
I have found that most times when I have problems with GSB if I flash another ROM then flash GSB it works much better. First I manually clear the /data/dalvik-cache folder using Root Explorer then reboot to recovery. Then I flash xtrROM because it formats boot, system and data I believe, then I enable USB and delete the android.secure folder. I do all this without ever rebooting then flash GSB.
I'm still running 3.8 and I have no problems with it. And I am running all 3 of Zeppelinrox's tweaks.
Edit: A day after I posted the above I see that my wifi is doing this again. It worked and now it doesn't. I made no changes; it just quit working and now says "scanning" until I open wifi settings and then it connects with no problem.

Possible fix for wifi freeze

Ever since I downloaded gingerbread I have noticed (and I know I'm not alone) a wifi freeze that would occur everytime my screen would turn off. I've tried countless factory resets, reflashing recoveries, and apps like wifi reassociate and nothing seemed to work. When I reset my phone it would seem fine till I uploaded my go launcher app . Since then it wouldn't work, so I tried uninstalling it and vuala it works again and flawlessly might I add. I use the wifi off Wm screen is off feature in advanced settings and once I turn on the screen within 5 seconds the wifi is on again as well. Hopefully this is a fix for others as well..

sorry but just to clarify, are you saying that wifi freezes with go launcher only?
because I think that many users here are using launchers that differ from go launcher and yet they are facing this issue.
btw I am using stock 407 since a week and never once the wifi froze (touch wood!)
What I've noticed is that when WiFi stops working after the Dell Streak has been on standby for a while is that if I switch the device to Airplane Mode, then off Airplane Mode, it works properly, till it's been on standby for ages again. Small annoying glitch, but I deal with it.
It never freezes while in active use.

Good enough for me, maybe this will be useful to someone else as well. Cheers.

The first few days it worked. But after awhile Wifi Fixer started giving me issues, specially using 100% of the CPU. I unistalled it. I couldn't take my Streak being slow.
The same thing was happening for me also. However, the problem went away after I re-flashed the 407 recovery and installed the Olleh ROM again on my streak. Fingers crossed !!
I was able to fix my wifi problems by setting up a static IP on the phone and router. I have a detailed post in the DSC Rom thread...

I've noticed a lot that with 407 the wifi shows as connected, but won't work until I turn wifi off and on again.
I hope this helps
I was looking into this WiFi freeze and ran into the XDA's crew. Is it possible to have mobile data working perfectly? I can't locate my sim card I believe its built in. My WiFi is set to off. My router will resume network if I turn wifi back on. The weird thing is. I have no data plan on this phone, its been down for years. I was shocked but it didn't help with the freezing, it was if I turned WiFi back on. Then the old Vibrate, Stall.ing, vibe one more time then the WiFi freeze thing.
Still on topic don't worry but that talk about go launcher. It "was" recently installed on my device. Till we all started doing data wipes Hahaa. My point is. As a fresh data restore no apps installed yet. My Google Search suggested that I use explorer, youtube or tubemate to view my search? I dont have that installed anymore I'm a changed man.. Thats why I brought up your Go Launcher theory. Maybe both launchers are interfering I guess, cuz I wouldn't know. I'm only here to give XDA's more Details so they can do what they do best...
My Samsung S738C is running 4.0.4 ics

Start with Go launcher or if there's anything this Noob can do. Won't be much
good job
thank you very much sir !
