Hi Guys!
I've seen soo many post: "Use a Task Killer for better battery life!"
But I've probably seen that much post: "DON'T use a Task Killer... The continuous killing of tasks drains the battery! Android manages the Tasks internal..."
So now I'm confused
Should you use a Task Killer or shouldn't you?
I haven't used a task killer in ages. With the latter kernels and builds they are pretty irrelevant I feel. There is better memory management and CPU usage with the latest kernels to make task-killers all but obsolete.
You don't have to use them anymore. If you want to have more free RAM you could use Auto Killer (free in the market). There you can set the presets to Optimum. But I have to say that my data drops have reduced since I don't use it anymore.
It's a little off topic but what I wanted to ask you, do you have lots of drops in the Swisscom network? Because I think those drops only happen if you have a bad network connectivity. Btw. I'm working for Sunrise

agreed i only see the use for a task killer if it gets stuck on exit of the program or task
Ok... It seems I won't need a task killer... But I'm using now AutoKiller with preset to Optimum

About the drops... I'm using this build (PPP) now for about one day^^ - But until now it's working like a charm (mobilespeedtest.com gives me a bandwith of ~2000kbps - 2Mb file tested)
In previous builds (RMNet) it worked quite good too, but sometimes it wasn't really fast... But I haven't had a full data-drop (You would need to reboot to solve it don't you?)
EDGE-Data doesn't work at all... (But E-Data Logo is in notification-bar). Probably an APN-Setting is missing or I don't know. I don't really miss it in daily use. Just in trains it's sometimes annoying...
What happens to programs that you "close" is that they are put in the RAM and saved for later use to switch quickly to them. However, most programs don't use the CPU (therefore don't really waste much battery life). Therefore, actually closing and opening the app wastes MORE battery life than just leaving it "open". The only time you really need a task killeris if you start running out of RAM (which is HARD on the HD2).
theres a game named pocket legends , theres no exit button(as most of the android apps) , if i put it in the bg with home button , my phone will stutter all over , even contacts list is laggy becuz of high cpu usage ... what would u guys do who have no taskiller in a situation like that ??

This is kinda true, but I was more talking about Automatic Task killer.
I use SystemPanel Lite as my Taskmanager and System control

If a program doesn't have an exit button, use the back button, as this will normally close the application or game instead of pressing home, as this leaves the app open.

Same for me, I'm using PPP now for about 1 month (mattc 1.8, a little older but this build is it really worth, soooo smooth). And you are right, here in Swiss the connection is always very good (except you live somewhere in the "pampa" )
If you have a drop, just go to airplane mode and back, that always solved for me. EDGE does work for me, but it is veeeeery slow.. kinda annoying. And as you said, this only happens in trains.
It's really pretty simple I think.
(Have a task killer ATK free for me).
Set it to ignore almost everything.
Don't have it auto kill
Still don't have it auto kill
Open it when you need it to kill buggy, stuck apps.
Is there anything you can argue with about this approach? It seems that people are arguing past each other because one side says "don't have a task killer" and the other side says "how can I kill problem apps then?". These aren't mutually exclusive.

Never used task killer, only AutoMemory Killer to optimize Froyo memory management. coming from computer we thing that "more free ram you have, more fast it will be", this is not true on Android.
It works in the same speed if you have 200mb free ram or if you have 5mb free.
When it reaches some values, the system automatically freeup ram closing not more necessary tasks.
You can change those value when the system act, using Auto Memory Killer

I'd close it manually, Settings > Applications > Manage Applications then force stop it. Sounds to me like that's one buggy piece of software tho. If it's in the background it shouldn't use CPU time, only a bit of ram to suspend it.

Hi,
Just writing because i experience my Tattoo device to be extremely slow reacting. I have used it for 14 days now and to begin with it reacted fast but now it is very slow when touching widgets, scrolling in contacts, opening apps and so on. Has anyone got some advice? I have added some widgets and apps from Market, but could this really be enough already to slow device this much?? (It acts as my old HTC Touch GSM with WM6, which should say a lot).
Regards
Anders
Do you pwer cycle your phone regularly, and try downloading taskiller if you havent already. My tattoo is very speedy, but its running a wwe rom instead of a carrier one.
Task Killer
Yes,
Task Killer is the perfect app for speeding up the tattoo.
Make sure to enable "Kill All" when screen is turned off
Also ensure to add applications such as clock or music in the ignore list so that it does not kill it.
If clock is not added to the ignore list, then Alarm will not go off. Hope you get the picture

What is the real name of task killer with settings for kill tasks when screen is turned off?
And are we shure it's real necessary? Try to read this article
I have use Task Killer.. yes, it is very good app. it can improve battery life, can speed up. But my morning alarm never ring again after using this.
And one more question, why all android apps are consuming so much system resources.. I mean all of them always try to run in the background even when I do not require them consuming so much system resources, like RAM and battery??

hi all,
i m new user for Nexus one, i wonder what is the best task apps to auto kill when the phone in sleep mode in order to save battery. My phone havent ROOT yet, shall i do it? After i have update the Android 2.1 i found it very good compare with iphone.
thank you very much
Killing tasks won't help to save battery... don't buy the hype. Android will manage your apps for you.
No killing tasks can help your battery. There are many apps on the market that are poorly written and drain battery.

Well that makes sense... but I don't run any poorly written apps. And neither should you.
If you absolutely have to have a task killer, just download Astro File Manager. You'll need a file manager on this phone anyway, and Astro has a built in configurable task killer and can also back up apps to SD.

I try not to. But sometimes I get curious and download some random apps haha.
I use Advance Task Manager since I bought it when I had a Cliq.
It works good when I need to kill something to restart it or if I need to do a batch uninstall.
Astro is amazing and no one should have an android phone without it.
Thks all,
If so, i shall just leave as it is and not install any of those task killer or auto task etc......
But anyway to min the battery drain since there are so much apps running on RAM when the phone is in sleep mode. My battery can only last for 8 hrs from 9am till 5pm (i am so distracted, i do turn on my BT and talk on phone for at least 100mins-150mins a day.)
Thank you

while this is true, I notice that android's threshold for closing programs is lower than I prefer. It seems to start closing programs at around 25 mb free (on stock kernel and rom) as reported by ES strong's task manager. At this level there is a noticeable amount of sluggishness on my N1. Of course this only lasts for perhaps 10 seconds or so as I am switching apps or whatever until android closes the processes to free up some ram.
I've read comments like yours many times, and I go back to not using one for a while thinking I must just be paranoid. Each time I return to the task manager because I get ticked about sluggishness.
If you manage your ignore list carefully to avoid closing stuff you actually want running in the background you lose nothing. The phone is fast enough that it loads apps quickly even if they're not sitting in the ram, so I prefer to hit the autokill widget once in a while or after using something like the youtube app or other resource hogging apps that I don't use on a regular basis.
I haven't noticed a difference in battery life, but the task manager improves my experience with the phone. It seems that as long as the free memory stays around 40+ I don't see the sluggishness.
Which task killer you use?

I've got over 400 hours of uptime without closing ANY apps with a task killer, and haven't had ANY sluggishness. So if you're really noticing your phone slowing down (and be honest), then I'd exchange it. Frankly, I think a lot of people just "think" their phone is slowing down...

Yeah, I'm sure you're right.. it's all in my head.
Couple of things OP:
1. Bluetooth is a battery hog!
2. How frequent do you have email update, weather update, et al set to?
3. Did you properly calibrate your battery meter when you got your N1? (Two ways to do it, 1) follow the in box guide and charge the phone before using or 2) run down the battery until the phone shuts itself off, pull battery out, put it back in. Now, without turning it back on, put it on the charger and leave it on for a couple hours past the green light coming on, take off charge, finally turn back on)
4. Do you have WiFi running? GPS? Streaming anything?
Have you downloaded any apps from the market just on a quim? There are some pretty bad apps that will never close until you uninstall and do a soft reset, and sometimes uninstall again.
Killing apps is actually going to hurt your battery. It takes more juice to power up the CPU to open an app then it does to hold it in the RAM, unless it is a crap written app that keeps running, and running, and running... but you shouldn't be using those apps anyways.

It most likely is... even when apps sit idle in RAM, the CPU usage for them is 0% in almost every case. Like I said... I don't have those issues at all, so it's either in your head or you have a dud.

Those of you running auto killer in your roms, did you use the aggressive settings or custom?
I'm just curious to see if anyone increased the auto kill.
I use either the aggressive or custom depending on the Rom honestly. DC ROMS= Aggressive. FRESH ROMS= strict. and all others = custom

I've been using Aggressive on Fresh 2.0d and it's been running great.
I tried Moderate for a while at first, but Homerun Battle 3D wouldn't even startup consistently. Once I changed it to Aggressive it has been working great.
Another quick note. I know Autokiller is supposed to reapply the settings on boot, but I'm not sure mine is. I haven't rebooted for a day or so, but the last couple times I rebooted I couldn't get Homerun Battle to run. Then I went into Autokiller and applied Aggressive again and it would start. Anybody else having similar experiences?
I used either the aggressive or strick on Fresh 2.0d. So far everything is running the smooth and fast. This the way HTC hero should have come out of the box.
What does each preset do? Is this for speed or battery life or both?

Damn. I wish Homerun Battle 3D would run great for me. Problem is I get crummy service at work and with it going in and out of 1x and EVDO, causes the game to lag.
I have noticed sometimes on first opening HRB, it force closes but it always opens the second time.

i'm running aosp 1.6 from gbhil and i used custom autokiller settings.
the way i see it they made these phones with all this ram may as well use it, what good is it to have all this free ram?
1536,3072,4096 (all default) then hidden app is 7680. content provider is 8960 and empty app is 10240. i normally run around 40-45 free ram thats about where i like it. the phone still runs fine all the way down to 20mb free but any less than that it starts going downhill.
so, im MB my settings are 30 then 35 then 40. runs great!
yeah, I get some lag now and then if I don't have great service. Playing offline seems to work fine though. I think it's just the online play that it effects. A co-worker has a Droid and his lags when playing online as well if he's in a spot without good service.

Autokiller does have a built in task killer but its real use is to tweak memory settings at boot and then shuts itself down (so Android can take care of the rest). So, in reality it is not really a task killer per say.
Fair enough, but it's still entirely pointless. I trust the device manufacturer and Android far more than I ever would the random numbers that I might otherwise delude myself into believing were somehow better.
Just let Android do its thing all of the time. It doesn't need any additional help (particularly with the process management in 2.1). Stop including this garbage in ROMs.

It actually very useful for making roms run smoother. By default the memory numbers are very low, which lets a TON of apps run at the same time. The higher the memory numbers the more it ends apps that you werent even using. It gives what you are currently running or recently ran more priority. Even if you dont use AutoKiller, which is just an app to adjust the memory setting, every rom comes with an edited memory setting other then htc's default. Its most commonly known as gumbo's memory settings.
Also in AutoKiller you can adjust the settings to default, or just really low like htc would have them set.
Its really not a bad thing to include in roms because most people want there rom to be smooth and as close to lag free as they can get. AutoKiller helps achieve that by ending stuff you dont currently have up making the phone run faster. Thats if you have a decently set setting. I run mine on optimum, and it doenst close unnecessary things like if im on the web it stays running.
I can understand an app like Task Killer which just terminates the apps. AutoKiller is just setting the memory setting of your phone, which end apps the same way as if the phone were running normally. Just if the numbers are higher the more apps it will end quicker freeing up more space.
Also you really trust htc and sprint?? haha good luck with that

Either way it should be a choice made by the USER not someone who decides what I need or do not need on my phone. What I choose to have running or not running, there is no need for this garbage for the average joe who just wants something that does not look and feel like Sprint garbage. If its such a great and useful thing put it on the market and let users have a choice.
Hi
Ive just got this app (really to save myself some battery time)
On launching for the first time it presents me with a whole bunch of stuff including my clocks
Now i'm sure this maybe a pretty dumb question but if i kill the htc clock App will that stop the time and weather updating correctly? (i have my weather set to update hourly) and also if i kill any app like K-9 or Peep (that i have an update schedule set for) will it stop that schedule till i manually launch the app again or will it auto launch when it reaches the sheduled update time?
Sorry for the (potentially) stupid questions
Cheers
The only thing you're going to achieve with using a task killer, is lowering performance and causing even worse battery drain. If that's what you want to do, fine, but otherwise, I wouldn't bother if I were you.
Here's why:
Android's memory management is nothing like Windows Mobile. Applications you've finished with are MEANT to stay in memory until they really are completely finished with, and just because YOU aren't using them, doesn't mean the phone has. If they've been inactive long enough, or some other program needs the RAM, Android will tidily close them down.
If you close them prematurely, then Android will have to load them back up again, so that whatever was using said program's services, can continue to function. This noticeably affects phone performance, and puts an extra load on your battery. Do you REALLY want to do that?
I'm not using any task killers, and my phone runs great, and battery is up to 2.5 days.
Hmm interesting, i might try that, im killing all instantly and repeately, thanks for the tip

would an app like task panel work?
you can add apps that are system apps etc to the ignore list and have apps such as games on the force to kill list or is it just best not to have any task killer apps installed at all?
its strange that there are so many task killer apps and its bad to run on your device. There must be some reason as to why there is an app for this purpose?

They exist, because people think memory management on Android works like it does on Windows Mobile. It doesn't, and never has. Think if it like the so called "memory manager" tools you can get for XP that claim to be able to free all your RAM and speed up your system... Every single one of them is nothing but a placebo designed to part you from your cash, and often end up CAUSING problems, just like task killers on Android do.
Avoid them.

Guess thats a good enough reply lol
task killers can work fine, but you need to know what is running and what is using it.
for example, if you have the music widget on the homescreens, then the music player process will be opne in the background.
likewise friendstream will keep people, facebook and twitter open in the background.
if you kill those processes, they will just get opened again.
As long as you are careful, using task managers will not decrease battery life, you just need to know how to use them properly. randomly killing everything in the background is NOT the way to do it.
and you should never close clock if you want your alarm clock to actually go off!!
Might be worth making a list of what apps should be ignored and what apps can be forced killed?
When i had an app killer installed, i used to only force kill games and sat nav apps, the rest i asked it to ignore but after reading this thread, i decided to delete the app killer app =)
Ive put a bunch of stuff like clock, weather, Peep and facebook etc on the ignore list and have used the task killer to only kill off frivolous apps like Spark (for xbox friends) streamfurious, photos etc...Nothing Major!
I unhooked my phone from the power at 7:30 am on the 13th April, its now 16:36 on the 14th april and it still has 30% of the juice left, and i always have wifi and mobile data connection on too...phone is always left on with facebook connecting ever 4 hrs and peep once a day and mail set for every 2 hrs (besides which i do check and update them manually a couple of times a day)
I'll try all this without task killer installed and test how long the phone can run before charging
As you say, it could well be a combination of the battery coming up to speed and a placebo effect.
However, surely it cant do more harm than good to kill an app like Spark !
However, im no Phone Genius so im sure someone will soon tell me that im completely wrong
But so far so good....like i said, ill test things without task killer installed
I've stopped using the task killer now and my battery life has improved very noticably.

im not so sure about this.
im using a task killer when i want to close the browser or something using internet, as we all know internet drains a lot of battery and even if the browser or market is in the background it still probably has some active connections = draining battery

If you want to close fast the browser or any app, you should have a try at taskOS and launch it with the search key whenever you want...
Binned this app in favour of Juice defender, my new battery saving app of choice, seems to be working as it should too...nice

but then that works pretty much like a task killer
can anyone correct me about the apps i.e. browser using internet while not active(in background) is this true or not? of course having the sync/updates turned off
Task killers can be handy for those times when apps seem to have crashed but aren't forcing close. for example, i've had times where ebuddy just doesn't want to even try to sign in. Task kill it. Try again. all is well. And last my internet browser wouldn't let me click any buttons. Again, killed it - restarted - all is ok.
I've had to use such an app countless of times due to unwanted/unneeded apps running, hanging FCs and black screens, checking/closing net related or sensor using apps, and numerous times when 300KB apps wouldn't install citing 'low memory' when I have more than 70MB free, but it was the RAM being near full causing FCs in apps like Market, and halting the installs. I only use Androids built-in TaskPanel widget for this though. Everything routine is set over to the ignore list so that I don't accidently hit and close that (single hit closes the app). Additionally I use this app to check and to switch to an opened application that is running (when it's not in the recent list).

This is the route I've taken naturally. I'm using jkAppSwitch on my longpress search key, mainly used for switching but can be used to kill problem apps.
Full task killers are being proven to be useless on the Desire.
I would recommend using an app that monitors the cpu usage(watchdog etc.). This way your can see which apps put a drain on your phone.
Thank you for the information. But I do notice a considerable improvement in battery power with Advanced Task Killer.
I hope someone can provide me an answer.
Many people say it's harmful using app killers, especially on android as it may interfere with important system resources or close important system files and can do harmful damage in the longrun such as errors, things not working, etc...
When you open various programs such as file manager, picture gallery, etc you then see a list of all running programs in system/task manager.
Many of these running programs are ones you have recently used and are draining ram/cpu/battery.
Is there not ANY safe app to use that will ONLY close apps that YOU have used?
There must be some app out there that closes/kills open apps, not system or phone apps but only the ones you have installed and used?
This could be a ram killer or maybe a simple app which is not dangerous and will safely close running apps not needed.
Looking forwards to seeing what others recommend.
Thanks in advance guys,,,

yes, there are, but android just restarts them after they have been closed (froyo only)

Names please of a good app that kills ONLY programs you open, not system files.
What if I was to install an appkiller, but instead of having it on autokill, I was to manually click apps I opened and kill them?
Surely this way there is no danger as I'm only closing selected apps, not system files?

The point is, even after killing your own apps, most of the time froyo will restart them
I very much like ES' offerings - ES File Explorer and ES Task Manager. They're both free, give em a birl.
You can install Advanced Task Killer (free) and there you can perfectly select which apps to close and which not... still I rarely use it
for example your homescreen widgets are always unchecked when killing tasks, so unless you check them, they won't be killed...
Hmmm, ok.
What is the BEST way to preserve & save battery/cpu & free up as much ram as possible without harming/interfering with the phone??
When I used to use the task killer app it would consistently give me around 400-424mb free ram.
Without the app killer I would only have around 100mb of free ram since all the programs are running in the backround.
So to all you experts out there, what can I do or what options do I have in which I can safely free up as much ram as possible and safely close running apps not needed when not using the phone?
I just want the best and most effective way to make my battery last longer.
I'm having to charge my phone every day, it struggles to get through the day even when hardly used.
Looking forwards to hearing some expert opinions based on the above.

There's definitely a problem there but you're not going to find it chasing free ram. I have approx 20Mb free ram at the moment, the phone hasn't been rebooted for at least a week but I'm easily getting through 2 days with light use. Task killers / app killers are not the answer, (in froyo at least) free ram is wasted ram.
The programs that are 'running' in the background are not actually using CPU resources unless they have a service running (see the eBay app/service for an example). Your best bet is to check the running services (settings/applications/running services) and battery usage to work out what process is hogging the CPU time. Also check your sync settings, though I'd imagine you've already tried that.

Maybe it's the anipet fish aquarium live screensaver...
Systempanel is good, I use it to stop a bad app thats using to much memory..you should never kill your apps with froyo, the OS wasn't designed like that, thats the whole point of Android, it looks after the apps perfectly well by itself, systempanel is just there as a....just in case method.
Saving battery power is a common misconception, Task killers actually get in the way of Android handling memory management as intended.....a pointless app to have with 2.2 which actually drains you battery quicker.
The LCD screen is the biggest drain on battery power, turning the brightness down, stop using a live wallpaper, turn off wifi, bluetooth, GPS ect....
With all that said the 1250mah battery is just not powerful enough to run this device period...but then most of us knew this before we bought the phone..we needed a 2000mah battery really, its just a lipo battery and can be easily increased, maybe next year we will see an improvement in the new smartphones.
