Sorry for misspeaking for the masses when saying chicagoland area, although my observations for SOME of the area seems to be right, according to this thread it may not be entirely accurate for the entire area. However NWI - Portage and surround areas to the west seem to get this good signal. Sorry guys =(

Hey guys! I can hardly contain myself. Since launch day I was plagued with HORRIBLE cell reception and had the 3g/edge switching issue. New radios always seemed to help little by little as they were rolled out, and eventually I just gave up and went to WiFi at home all the time. Dropped calls and such happened frequently.
The cell signal for the past 3 weeks-ish has been weird and flaky. I've never since January have been able to get more than 800kbs and that was full bars. More times than not it was 300-400kbs.
As of this week.... 1700kbs!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jesus Christ this thing flies now. I've been missing out on a lot. THANK YOU TMOBILE!
If anyone else has some awesome success stories with the N1, post in this thread =)
congrats, hope they upgrade the Las Vegas area soon.
do you get a different icon on the home screen when on HSDPA? Like instead of 3G?

no you will not get a new icon unless you are using a modded rom.

I'm currently using the stock Froyo test build so no icon. I love moving about the town and have steady 5 bars though. =)

What part of town are you in? I never had any problems with reception in Lincoln Park, through max download speed was around 800 kilobits.
Edit: Just saw that you said Chicagoland..never mind.
im in the chicagoland area. I just got 450kpbs down on my speedtest.
Talcott and Harlem pushing 1300kb myself
I wonder how long it will be before it hits down here in Bloomington/Normal
Although were not that big, we have a lot down here. Illinois State University, Illinois Wesleyan University, State Farm Headquarters, Country Companies, Nestle, Mitsubishi Motors

so now that you have solid service, do you look back and maybe were you one of the people who complained about the nexus one poor reception and all this, and now you got solid coverage so you see how those of us with great sesrvice dont have those issues!

I was in Roger's Park and my downstream was 800kbps~. I recently moved to River West, (like Grand/Halstead), and my speed was around 2.7mbps. My upstream is the same as before 350kbps~.
In westside Los Angeles, getting around 2.8mbps down. It's damn nice that TMO is stepping it up.
Just checked, I'm getting ~50KB/s down up. Slower than before.
I'm in the western suburbs.
In the Oak Lawn/Alsip area and speeds are the same as always 800kbps is peak but usually slower.
Well I live in Portage area and took the SS in the other day and was fairly consistent on the way. Perhaps I should get this edited. Sorry guys, I could of sworn it was rolled out for the rest of ya.
As for the complaints and such about low speed/choppy speeds. Its night and day. I had it and now I don't, ever. So I can see how big of an ordeal it would have been to straighten out this signal issue from tmobile-google as its not consistent
Where are you in Chicagoland area? I don't notice a difference. I frequent Chicago/Buffalo Grove/Highland Park areas.

I haven't seen speeds like that anywhere in LA.

Are you on the 2.2 test ROM by chance? The test rom was missing some info in its build.prop file which may leave your phone unoptimized for cellular data.

im on froyo maybe thats why im not seeing hspa+ then
This is the best I've seen in Austin:
Connection Type: Cell
Download: 4921 kbps
Upload: 1500 kbps
Ping: 76 ms
I can consistently get over 3mbs down.
Searched the forum, but didn't see a similar issue to mine.
Phone: T-Mobile N1
Stock, not-rooted, FRF91
Got the phone about 3-4 weeks ago, and it was rock solid up until 3-4 hours ago.
Since then the internet has been super crappy. Thats odd considering I've run speedtests in this same location that average about 3.1 Mb down, and I'm also at 4 bars of 3G.
Texting seems to work fine, though sending messages is also taking longer than normal.
Rebooted the phone several times, took the battery out a couple times. I'm fairly sure its not T-Mobile, since other people near me aren't having problems.
Any thoughts?
You hit your 'fair use' data limit and t-mob have throttled your data connection?

Nah it wasn't that, I barely break over a gig a month. It seems something was up with the cell tower. Once I left work, everything was fine. Though it was weird no one else seemed to be having issues.
Problem solved lol.
Dude I'm getting the exact same issue over here in Moreno valley California! Wtf. I guess their testing stuff out things with the hspda + to make it official ... I went form 3mb to 512kbps

At some points I couldn't pull any data. Tested -0 in dl/ul on the Speedtest App, lol,
I've been getting the same problem in nj just outside nyc. I used to get pretty fast 3g but two weeks ago it really slowed down.

It doesn't sound like a phone problem, more like carrier problem.
I am also having this same problem. Live in suburb of Boston and we are just about ready to turn on the HSPA+ network from T-Mobile. I figured this was due to all the work on the local towers in my area. Come on T-Mobile please just flip the switch.
hmmm check sigy, so is it true 4g towers on wallmarts?
crap update siggy omg

yes.........
Now that you mention it, the only time I get full 4g bars is when I am close to wal-mart. Wonder if its just coincidence.
sweet!!! i cant wait to get the official Froyo on mines since i get already good speeds and will be moving soon very close to a Walmart!!
well if you might have saw on engadget there was talk about sprint and walmart having a deal for ever walmart to put up a wimax tower on roof. but i am not sure that there was any more talk other then that.
so if that is true i am going to test it out as soon as i go to walmart.
My 4g reception has greatly improved and my 4g speed has almost doubled over what it was in the same areas I had tested prior to 2.2. I too almost reached 9 mb when I was previously lucky to get 4.
So far, that alone has made this release very much worth the wait.

in St Charles MO no difference. i get 1 Bar and I am 1 mile from Walmart so not all have towers at least yet.
I did do a couple of test and found something else. If i select the St. Louis server best i get is 1500 down (20 miles away) if a select Chicago (450 miles away) i get 2800 normally with the best being 3500. I am think some of the test servers are not setup the same
I get the same thing. The Houston server is less than 20 miles away but I can never get over 4. If I switch to the Dallas or Austin server which are like 200 & 300 miles away I can hit 9. Guess its server limitations.

im in salt lake, when i use 4g, speed test thinks im only 50miles away from austin texas, when i switch to wifi, speed test has my correct location, so its something screwy with 4g servers but i don't care as long as **** works.
We all know their network sucks right now, including myself, but Sprint is working on this. They are rolling out what's called "Sprint Vision" (and forgive my lack of technical know-how) basically they are adding some "boxes" with multiple "cards" that can be inserted in them allowing for better/faster coverage in multiple directions that can easily be fixed if one goes down by simply replacing this "card" (something to this degree). The full "vision" has not been rolled out yet and is mainly the cause why the speeds suck right now.
Oh God.... This sounds like they're trying to whip up a janky version of a CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System).

hell id be happy with that lol im getting 100k or less some times
I read the announcement on this... its actually pretty good. The towers will now only need one refrigerated smaller box to do 4g 3g and 1x(saves energy and space) they will use fiber cables to the top instead of copper for less signal lose. They will need less towers because this one can do all of it.

What's wrong with this setup? The cable co's use it, and in most instance it works well. The issues occur when there's over saturation - not enough blades to handle the load. Speeds go down, noise goes up, speeds go down more so... Perpetual cycle.
In fact, I recently had an issue with my cable provider where during prime time hours, speeds would drop 25-40% or more. At first look it would appear to be a capacity issue, but in my talks with the head of local operations, that wasn't the case. Plenty of capacity in this area to go around. Turned out during prime time, due to additional load, a failing card/blade (not the one I was connected to) was generating noise, which ultimately was causing my issues. They replaced the offending part, returning my speeds back to 20mbps at all times of the day.
Bottom line, who cares what method they use to increase speeds and bandwidth, so long as it works and is consistent.
Well it makes sense here..whatever it is...they might have it done in my area of Chicago....because a couple weeks ago 3g improved in a major way. Data downloads fast here now.

Yeah. Right.
If you're in an area where Sprint leases tower space like I am, you'll likely see this around the 34th of Never.

Didn't Sprint sell off all their towers to TowerCo in 2008, and leases all of them?

They do lease them. They still get to decide what goes on the towers.

They didn't even have any to sell here. IIRC nTelos owns all the towers Sprint uses in WV.
I can vouch that my 3G signal is much, much nicer, it was upgraded in my area about a week ago. (And no, I'm not using an Airave.)

I have been unable to connect using 4G. 3G works very slowly. I can click the 4G widget to establish a connection, I get a 4G icon at the top with full signal bars. But unable to connect to any web sites or even the android market.
This seems to be happening in a lot of places. NYC is trash right now.
Mine has been quite goofy lately. It will connect with bars but like you said, then nothing will connect. I noticed it the last week trying to run a speed test to show a friend. It couldn't connect to a server, so that demo went REALLY well.
EDIT: Popped your Cherry
4g philly has been horrid all day until like 10pm...... try connecting to 3g by the art museum? impossible
YES in philly my 4g just dosnt work... Neither does my fiances on her evo... I got full bars but can't use it.... Glad I'm not the only one.. Means it'll be fixed soon
Edit: the independance day show was great

I'm not in Philly but maybe 1hr northwest in Reading and that happened to me yesterday. 4G on and couldn't connect to the net or market and even tried a little speed test and nothing. I did noticed it back around 9 or 10 in the night, so maybe it will be a half a day for you guys.
I'm currently about 5min outside Philly but I hit a tower in the city for 4G. I'm able to access sites but randomly pages will fail but if I reload they will end up loading the second time. I've heard issues in other cities so maybe it's a Sprint problem.
Update for 4G
3996 kbps down
1369 kbps up
In north Philly today
