hi i just bought myself a brand new vibrant and switched back to tmobile from spriny n got rid of my evo i loved my evo but sprintys customer service sucked and i had problems with the evo .i have had lots of android phones and i am loving the vibrant so far i just want to sday hello and ask a few questions . what is the best method of rooting i have noticed there a few methods for the vibrant . i wna have full root with nand unlock so i CAN FLASH CUSTOM ROMS N KERNELS . another question is what is the best rom in ur opionion as far as speed and stability ? is there a cyanmod 6 for the vibrant ? or a froyo rom with all features working ? thanks in advance i appreciate it
I used the earliest root available (the one involving the update.zip) and that was incredibly easy. To answer your other questions, there aren't many ROMs out now. You can use Vibrant4 Eclair which I've heard works really well, but I'm still using stock. Cyan is in development and should be out soon. If you are desperate for Froyo you could try one of the builds originally for the European Galaxy X, but not everything works on that build.

LOL.........
okay...we already knew this was true, but i have a question.
When the real froyo comes out, will we have to flash back to the DI18 stock w/ Odin or will we be able to update the manual way like we did for this "test"? (I know it wouldn't show up in the system updates notification)
Since ur probably gonna root and load a custom rom anyway, pretty sure u can just wait for the rom packages to be updated and go straight from dk28

Yea, but doing that will inevitably lead to problems. The best way to do it is to return to DI18 and let Android update you the normal way, then root, then install whatever rom you want. If DK28 has taught us anything, its that trying to take the shortcut leads to non functional GPS and other problems.
Which means we'll probably be getting the final build of froyo in a few months judging by the current rate of progress. SOOOOOOO tired of waiting.
I checked the Sprint forums.
One of the admin suggests that the official update will be released within 3 weeks at the least, unless there's problems. Which...there will be -_-
I rooted my shift so i can use wifi tether. When, if htc releases 2.3 for the shift will i be able to load it or do i have to use a custom version? I rooted using the instructions on this site. Thanks in advance.
To be able to use the HTC drop you should ruu first, but I would just stay rooted it offers far more perks then being locked down

Don't load the ruu. Load a stock rooted rom. It may be a long time if at all before an official update is rooted.

Maybe im an idiot but if i thought if you were rooted and let it update with an official update i thought you were screwed thats why i said if you want htcs unroot if not flash one of the htc leaks which is out gingerbread with the new sense so it will get an update

As far as I know, any "official" update will break root.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Usually someone will post the update but remove only the crap that breaks root. Wait until that is available and use it. It will be tempting to load the official update when you see posts around the various websites mentioning that it is going out to people BUT DON'T DO IT!!! You may forever lose root....as it seems the Shift was fairly involved to root the first time around I wouldn't hold my breath for the next update to get rooted very soon, if ever.
Also, based on the EVO 3D apparently having an encrypted bootloader I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last HTC phone I ever own unless they make a future Nexus phone.
Looks like we are finally gonna get the official GB update.
It will start pushing the 20th but as of the 17th you can manually update by going to MENU>SETTINGS>SYSTEM UPDATES>HTC SOFTWARE UPDATE

well I just hope it is not like the damn evo 4g gingerbread update full of bugs lol
Noob question but this means we will have to get a new root process right?

Well yes if you install the OTA .. No if you wait for the great Devs to make a stock rooted ROM
Thanks for the heads up. It's about time they said something. Sounds good, but I'll wait till our Devs get there hands on it. Don't want the same issues some people are having with the EVO 4G update. Don't want to lose root, and have to wait.

Actually the EVO 4G owners are getting an update to fix the GB issues the same date that the Shift is getting the GB update
Well on the plus side netflix should work =)
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Netflix works for me and I've been on 2.3.4 for a while now. What I want is an updated kernel source for our devs to play with. Remember, HTC is listening. Tweet, Facebook, email them or whatever and ask that they please release the source

Yes, but if you do the OTA and have the new HBOOT you have to wait to root. I'd raher just wait for the Devs.

Also, looks like updates could be pushing out as early as the 17th

hope it has the updated sense. and we dont get the same exact thing the evo did
i'm running GB shift deck ROM and the android version already says 2.3.4... is there a reason why we would want to update via OTA if we already have that version?

The leak that is over in the Android Dev section has sense 2.1. I wouldn't expect the final release to have anything different.
This will be good once the kernel source comes out, and we can get some overclocking going.
Also, once the kernel source comes out, this should give the kingdom rom port a shot in the arm, as we will be able to OC that rom, and make it run like it should run.

Shift deck is AOSP, right? This is the sense rom update. You should only update to this rom if you want a sense rom again.
I will be waiting to install it as well. The root process on this phone is already involved enough. It will probably be a long time, if ever, before it gets rooted again after they patch the root method we are currently using.
The one thing I am curious about is if we are stock rooted will we be able to ignore the notifications about updating or is it going to constantly notify us to update forever?
According to Sprint's twitter account, the OTA is available now. I'm rooted, so I'm not going to mess with it, but for anyone who isn't rooted, and wants it, go get it...

If you turn off update notifications, you will never be notified.
Menu > Settings > System Updates > HTC Software Update (uncheck box)
Not showing for me. We need someone to get it and pull the .zip so the devs can root the update...

Hello my name is Melvin. I have a HTC EVO 4G. I had previously done a temp. root with unrevoked. I had 2.1 OS, and i think i may have screwed up. I new the new 2.2 was available, so i unrooted (temp.)To get the new FOTA. Now im interested in a custom rom, (gingerbread-deck-evo). Im obviously new at all of this. So, tell me did i screw up?
Or can i still root with unrevoked since it was only a temp root for tether purposes?
Im a noob!

Well Melvin. Your screwed. Assuming you took the 2.3.3. OTA, since 2.2 dropped last year, there is no root for us. Welcome to the club...

We need a poll to see how many of us are out there waiting...
Now then I just looked at my firmware version and it shows Android 2.2 when I took the update it said FOTA 2.2 . If that's the case. And its 2.2 . Then I need to learn how to get a custom Rom and flash it, since I'm a noon and all.

well if in case you do have 2.2 Froyo then you're still in luck with the rooting option.
in most of our cases we were either dumb and did the OTA update to 2.3.3 or like myself got an upgrade from my LG Optimus S to the Evo 4g and BAMMMM 2.3.3 out of the box which blows.
on the other hand I have heard rumors that Google recalled the 2.3.3 updates and no the Evo's that havent updated wont receive the update yet and are still rootable.. Could it be that the reason to that is all the Talk about Google unrestricting the bootloaders?
