I am thinking hard about flashing to a different rom because I see all these different roms and they seem cool, but I don't know where to even start. Anyone willing to point me in the right direction?

Ok, I will start there also ty.
What do you want?
Eclair or froyo?
TW or no TW?
lag fix or not? (no need in my opinion)
oc kernel or stock?
Answer those and it's a pretty easy choice. Read a lot first.

my idiot friends did it i signed in on his comp
start by looking in the guide wiki page read everything you cn in there so that you completely understand what you are doing. then the first thing to do is root.
use the pre-kitchen. it's the easiest way to get root on your phone.
find it in the ROMS sticky wiki.
ROMs are also in the sticky wiki. i'd say go with fresh 1.1 or gumbo 1.5c for now, and when you get a better knowledge of what's going on then maybe test on like 2.1 and stuff.

I have uploaded some Desire ROMS, they are older roms but I am sure they will be good for the community to have access to them. So here they are.

What are the differences between theses roms there are a lot to choose from ?
TIA
to be honest I have no idea, but they will be older stuff, so more than likely wont be has useful to everyday users. But if something happens to your device, you have the stock versions there where you can downlaod and restore to device.
But I am not an android developer and i have never looked into the files, and so I can not tell you what the difference is.
Just saw you post this on twitter too, thanks conflipper

yea me too id hate to lose my root
Already downloading it, haha, I'm running the leaks so no problem with root here
Someone asked me to load it up.
It appears to be the same one that is on this site
THIS SITE
So I would not recommend doing this, cause it looks like it will UNROOT your device.

O well nevermind then, Thanks anyways though con.
I think you should probably rename it to "leak2" or something, as to not confuse anyone
OKay, thanks for the tip it is done, I really wasnt sure what was in the file, so I just took the file name has it was.
Heey guys, first topic here

You shouldn't have deviated from stock in the first place. I would even go as far to say you shouldn't have even rooted your phone. You're going to get flamed....... You should have searched, and that tutorial is pretty basic. Figure the **** out

I agree.
However, I will admit that "tutorial" makes my eyes bleed. I cringe every time I have to link to it.

Click the link in my signature.
Instead of the zip files in my thread, download the zip file from the shipping ROM thread (" You may get the Original Shipping Image from HERE or thru Modaco HERE. [22607 build] ").
before going back to stock i recommend trying cm.5.0.6 rom, its 10x better then stock.
This may not be to your liking, but why not go with Cyanogen? Its UI is optimized for the Nexus One. Combined with HelixLauncher it's even more kick a$$.
Maybe i should try cyanogen
I heard that its really good :] And it is full version? not alpha like desire ROM, right? :]

its not an alpha version, everything works.
Just follow the steps in the guide...
I hope someone updates the guide and puts some screenshots...
here u go... i use this alot and has helped me in the past

they're not buggy but compared to cyan the battery life just sucks. I don't think many people use those ROMS as their primary OS.
Is it as easy as taking a Nandroid backup? Just curious as i am making a Rom tailored to my liking, nothing special as i am just putting together bits and pieces of others peoples work, and would like to share (and give credit where it is due of course!)
Thanks!
Good question. I would like to know also if there is some kind of tutorial out there but that is probably a stupid idea. I'd even be happy with learning how to create a flashable theme...
Such is life...
Good luck!

Other than using a JK6, instad of JK2 for froyo... no. I do not even know where to begin when it would come to things like that. I leave that to the pros.
anyone? should i post this in the dev section?

Heres a good place to start: http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
I dont think there is anything written specifically for the vibrant yet, but there are lots of other guides floating around for other phones and while they wont be exactly right for our phones, they should at least give you an idea of whats necissary.
and heres a good starting guide written for the hero: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551711
And from Cyanogen himself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667298
Just went over to sprint the other day and got this version that ha 5.1.1 installed out of the box. Been searching around and have yet to find anything that even list this version/build but see many others listed.
Is there a root/Pre-root rom that will work on this variant?
I second this! I have been searching for any info on rooting this specific device without luck! I don't mind doing research on how to do it and finding out how my self, just can't find anything at all to do so thus far!
Root for SM-G530P
I third this someone please help...
Before you get into flashing anything on the device....please be sure to enable OEM Unlocking under developers option.
Also, there seems to be a twrp recovery, however, I have not tested it out myself yet...when I do so I will let you all know if it's success or not.
Another thing, I think it's highly possible that the phone will require a "permissive" kernel...not too sure yet. I will advise shortly...
Ok I got news. The phone has been semi-rooted, I was right...it requires a permissive kernel in order for the phone to boot up once more. The people that come in mind when it comes to permissive sprint kernels are Freeza & Djvoleur. They can probably cook something up if they have the source code for this phone already.... also, we need a working twrp or philz recovery.... the ones provided do not work... meaning that it would be redundant to have a permissive kernel...if we don't have a working custom recovery to flash it over with.... unless there's another way to flash the zip file or maybe just the boot.img? I will keep updating this if I find anything further...

Wow sounds like this is it! Can't wait to try it when I get back home. Thanks for the updates guys!
EDIT: It works great, thanks for looking out and thanks for the work put into this to bring us root to our devices.
Now if I could just find a ROM for this thing that would make it a bit less bloated and run a bit smoother that will make it all worth while.

Nice walls phunkee, like the fractal ones, very retro! Only weird thing on my handset tho, is when i apply the theme using hdwalls, i have to switch off / switch on, to get the top and bottom curtains to change. If i simply do a soft reset, it puts standard grey top/bottom curtains up. Happens with all downloaded themes, ones ive made myself, everything. Odd!
