Hello,
is it possible to replace the standard Apps for example SMS, Email... before i install a android build?
My other question is:
Is there a way to delete some standard apps that i don't need?
I want to do this at my computer.

Use Root Explorer and delete whatever apps you dont need in /system/app/...but always backup whatever you delete, cause sometimes it might cause force close errors after deletion.
sure , you want to cook your own roms... theres threads on how to do that....
search.
otherwise, learn adb, or use root explorer...

sorry for the double post
Curious..........when we install .apks do they alreadly know where to install its self. some apks i can completely move to the /system/app/ and others go straight to /data/app where most apks go and cannot be moved without FCing
IS there a way to force all data that i want to system/app/
just wanted to know if this is possible...would be sweet
TIA
As far as I know if you install them manually you can install them wherever you want. System or data.
While rom building I've put non-standard apps into the system/app folder with no problem.
If you put them in the system/app folder you might need to make sure the permissions are set right.

I'm probably out of my league here, but I would guess that you should be able to add in the new keyboard (to the SYSTEM folder), select the new keyboard as your default keyboard (using an SMS app or something), then once it's selected you're good to go. You may be able to even delete the old one at that point without any errors?
However, you mentioned cooking and baking so this is what's over my head. Sorry if this doesn't help you.
Also, like that other dude said... "other" apps like the ones installed from the Market usually go in DATA. I noticed that when some ROMs have Maps installed in SYSTEM and you go to update it, it will install the newer version in DATA. I remember seeing in the logcat during boot that the phone detects both versions and just ignores the older version in the SYSTEM folder.

I have used that exact keyboard on ROMs in the past. I did a straight install from the SD card using a file explorer, Astro to be exact.
Maybe I'm missing what you are trying to accomplish, but that's how I installed it. I'm not up on the cooking and baking, but maybe it's different if you are trying to add it to the ROM prior to flashing?
To remove the standard HTC_IME.apk, I would install the new one first then go into adb shell and remove it that route.
The only way I know how to change permissions is by using the Root Explorer app. If you have that you mount r/w and navigate to the apk you wanna change. Then you long press it and go to permissions. It looks like all the ones in /system/app are "User: Read, Write; Group: Read; Others: Read". Hope this helped!

Anyone know how to uninstall apps that came with the hd2? for example transformers & telenav? I do not see them under settings and applications.
afaik transformers is just a video file on the sd that can be deleted. Regarding stock apps installed to internal memory, you cannot really "uninstall" them, you can at least try to manually delete their files, yet the cleanest solution is always to flash a custom bare rom, but only if you feel up to the task

Some of them have an 'update' option. If you use it, the updated version will appear in the 'Remove Applications' list and you can remove that. The old 'built in' app will no loger appear (but it's still cooked into the ROM)

That could cause problems, and he might delete the wrong files by accident. I'd suggest installing a clean rom to your device, as it will only have the basic "essentials" for your device!

If I delete the MobiTV folder from the Program Files folder, how could it cause problems? What else would be using those files? If you just stick to deleting the folder for the program you want to delete, I don't see how there can be any problems. I deleted four different apps on my phone using this method as well as deleting the associated shortcuts in the Start Menu folder and haven't experienced any problems whatsoever.
I'm currently running cmylxgo stock desire rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901576 and am loving it but have one issue. Lately I've been getting alerts that my phine is low on space. I delete any unused apps but pretty soon ill have to delete ones I use. Is there a way to be able to download as many apps as I want or delete any of the stick apps ill never use like facebbok, twitter etc.....or does anyone know if any of his other roms allow for more space?

Search for 'move to SD'.
Search the Market for App 2 SD
App to sd opened up about 25% more memory. Thanks guys
You can also try Darktremor a2sd script. It should allow you to move not only apps that can be moved to SD card but every apps along with the dolvik cache and user data files.
I haven't tried it on my HD2 yet and I know its still in beta, so I can't guarantee you whether it will work or not. But at least it worth a try. If u wanna try it do a nandroid backup first, just in case it mess something...

You can delete unused stock apps by purchasing an app called 'Root Explorer' from the market (or install any root-enabled file explorer really, i just like root explorer the best lol) and delete the .apk file of whatever app you don't want from /system/app directory of your phone. If your rom loads the system to ram memory, you also will have to delete the .apk from /system/ram/app directory or it will re-appear

I got root explore and did the following. clicked on root explorer then went into sysytem then app and deleted the facebook and twitter apk. They still appear in my apps though. Is there something elseim supposed to do?
Still no instructions on how to delete stock apps via root explorer? I found this on the thread to my rom but dont know how to install it. I got it on my desktop but now what? Can anyone help?
If you wish to gain an additional 27MB for apps in /data/ you can install the my new partition layout MAX[Build.v1.1.7]. This is NOT required and you can use any of my other partition layouts with build v1.1.7. However if MAX[v1.1.7] partition layout is used with older builds your Phone will not boot. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Hello!!!
i am another happy owner of the Ideos X5! New to android but i read a lot, before every step.
Here is one problem that i can't find a solution.
My device has preinstalled the app "Documents to go" v 2.5004 (748). I got the "documents to go" v 3.001 but i can't install it. :S
I used Root Uninstaller to uninstall the app, it said that the app is uninstalled, but i still can't install the newer version.
I got a message that says that the app is not installed.
what should i do? :S
with root explorer go into system/app folder and see if there is any trash of this app left... also check into data/data folder...
in the first directory there aren't any leftovers and the second is empty.
any other suggestions?
maybe you can use a new room?

that's the most difficult solution, for a simple problem.
finally i switched to OfficeSuite v4.0.351.
the portuguese model have the stock apps in the folowing path:
cust/tmn/pt
The "TMN" is the company name, soo you maybe have some like this.
You can go in this path and delete the apps with Root Explorer, Mount R/W and long press on the app and select Delete.
Sorry about my english
As syckopt says, you can delete the .apk files via Root Explorer, but the directories may vary depending on which carrier you have (and which country).
For example, my directory is: /cust/Dialect/SE/app
@ syckopt , sebgus
The Greek model has most of the stock applications at this directory: system/app/
while at the /cust/wind/gr/app/ there are only three (GreekPack.apk , Layar.apk and TouchPal.apk)
there are some applications, they say that they can "freeze" some stock apps. what exactly is freezing?
please check out and my other active thread: [Q] how to migrate to a new SD card?
thank you all for your help!

Freezing is basically the same as renaming the app or removing it. Its just allows to to unfreeze it (or rename it back to original name again), which is a lot easier than using something like root explorer.

which is the best app to do this?
Hello,
I've got the same problem. As it is not possible to update the pre-installed Documents to Go via Google Play (I always get error -104) I uninstalled that app using Titanium Backup. But unfortunately, it is still not possible to install ANY version of Documents to Go. If I try to sideload the APK file, I only get "App was not installed". Google Play gives me various errors, mostly -4 or -104, refusing to install the app, either.
In System/apps, there is no remnants of Documents to Go as far as I can see, a directory named cust does not exist.
Please help.
Thank you very much in advance and kind regards,
DAC324
Hi guys,
I have just started using kik messenger and registered a few accounts.
But i nedeed to rest one of my accounts now i cant remember the e-mail for it.
My question is there a way to see what i typed before on my phone or what i typed in that app.
If im correct there was a file in root files that saves wifi passwords,is there a file for specific apps.
I need to learn it somehow.
Every app have a data base on the phone
You will need root access to see these files
Look for kik folder in data
But I dont know specifically where to find the file
