[Q] Augmented reality - Galaxy Tab General

One of the cool things from the GT video, is augmented reality.
http://galaxytab.samsungmobile.com/
I cant seem to find any app on my Galaxy Tab that does this...
Anyone care to tell me?

Try Layar - it's supposed to be augmented reality or something.
But it's rubbish.

Do you know if Layar is the app beeing used in the video?

Yes, the app running in the video ads is Layar indeed.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk

There's tons of augmented-reality apps on the market. Few are useful though, at least not with respect to my usage patterns. There are also a couple of games that use the combination of haptic feedback, camera, GPS, compass/gyroscope and 4-axis accelerometer. None of which are as entertaining as Angry Birds: the novelty factor wears out quick, the gameplay is too compromised.

N.O.V.A HD. – Next Generation Gaming with the Galaxy Tab

I've done a mini review of the amazing shoot em up style game NOVA on the Galaxy Tab. Copied the text of the Blog Post below, FULL post and youtube Vid can be found here: "bilal-mobiler.blogspot.com"
I'm a new user so I can't post up links in posts! Otherwise would have put it all here..!
-----
N.O.V.A HD. – Next Generation Gaming with the Samsung Galaxy Tab
The 20 man (and-women!)-strong team of Samsung Mob!ler’s have each been gifted a Samsung Galaxy Tab and we’ve been putting it through its paces over the past week or so. Our first task has been to check out the gaming potential that the Galaxy Tab has to offer, and I’ve focused this post on N.O.V.A. - the outstanding 1st-person shoot ‘em up style game from Gameloft.
I must say from the outset that I framed the Galaxy Tab as a mini-computer/multi-media/internet/email/phone sort of device, i.e. not something I would play games on so much; maybe just some basic freebie stuff. However N.O.V.A has surpassed my expectations and blown my mind open to just what the Galaxy Tab can offer.
Display
With graphics and gameplay on par with (if not greater) that that of a PSP, the Galaxy Tab and N.O.V.A make quite the match. Bringing back memories of the classic N64 Goldeneye, the game comes alive on the Tab’s 7inch TFT HD display. It runs smoothly with no lagging or glitches. There’s an ominous storyline throughout the game, and you get to watch a series of videos and radio messages as you follow the story of a retired marine called back into duty following a surge of alien invasions.
Gameplay and Controls
Whilst there is a degree of repetition throughout, N.O.V.A makes for a challenging and entertaining game. The controls are intuitive, simple to grasp and really put you ‘in to’ the game. There is a virtual touchscreen analogue stick that moves you about and the direction you ‘face’ can be controlled both via the touchscreen (anywhere on the screen) AND controlled gyroscopically with the Tab’s accelerometer. This means you can look around the game environment by moving the phone up and down and literally point and shoot the bad guys. With buttons to fire, reload, throw grenades, switch weapons as well as well as a host of other interactive (and customisable) features, N.O.V.A can really suck you into the game. With the gyroscope in full action you’ll look like quite the crack –pot playing this on the train or bus, but just think how much fun you’d be having at the same time!
Extra features
There’s various little extra ‘bits’ to N.O.V.A that begin to explore just what potential gaming on the Galaxy Tab could be like. Whilst these are not fully developed, they show a lot of promise. Some of them include:
- There are mini ‘hacking’ games, which are essentially little puzzles that you work through and unlock ammo/progress in the game.
- There are some cool features where you have to interact with the environment in a really intuitive way. This could be sliding an arrow to make the lift move, or spinning/moving parts of the walls/doors to open them. I guess you have to see this live… Check out the video!!
- Multi-player mode – Connect over wifi and play death matches with strangers across the world or just play with your friends over a local network! This is an amazing facet to the game, very fun and very addictive!
Conclusion
There’s a lot of ‘wow’ factors to N.O.V.A, as I’ve advanced through the game it opens up various new tasks, weapons, and ‘missions’ from sniping to drive-by’s. I just didn’t expect this level of gaming to come from a tablet. Really impressed.
There’s still a degree of repetitiveness to the game with the same sort of ‘baddies’ appearing and attacking you in the same predictable way. It thus becomes a bit too easy sometimes. There’s a good amount of detail given to the terrain/environment, although this could easily be expanded upon and is largely wasted.
All-in-all, this is a game you just have to see in action! Better still, head down to a Mobile shop and put it through your paces yourself! You will be impressed and I just can’t wait to see what else is in store for the Samsung Galaxy Tab!

Is the version of NOVA on the tab a full version or Trial?
If it's full, that'd be annoying as it went bye-bye when I updated the firmware.

Gutted....hoping I can find a way to get them again...
i bought now the nova hd game, and im totaly dissapointed..
probably im too stupid, but is there really no option to invert the Y axis??
i mean.. WHAT THE ****, i need this, or its totaly unplayable :3
did i really waste the 5$ for nothing now?... (NO i will not learn to play non-inverted.. NEVER)
If you want the apk pm me

[Q] Does Flipout have a good game/app support?

I'm considering buying this smartphone for my sister who is 14 years old. I have a Motorola Milestone, and am very pleased with it, but I have no experience with lower resolution phones. And obviously she is a teenager so the main thing for her is games and fun apps on a phone. Will she be able run most of them on a 320x240 res? Thanks for help in advance!
The quick answer is no.
Many apps just don't show up in the store for the flipout. One can install a hacked market that allows you to install apps that weren't cleared by the developer for your resolution, and then most of them run. A simple example is angry birds. At first, I had to use this hack to install the game, after which it played mostly ok (other than the opening screen).
In addition, many of the games that rely on the accelerometer don't work well because axes are flipped.
If she's a hacker teenage sister, she might enjoy the chalenge, but otherwise, I don't think this is the perfect "play the cool games" phone.
Thanks for replying, you absolutley answeared my questions! She is smart for electronic devices, but I don't want her to waste time on hacking the phone (especially because it is supposed to be for fn only), thank you! Thread can be closed by a mod.
I guess she'd probably love it cause of physical keyboard. I had two touchscreen-only phones before this and forgot how much i love mobile speed writing. She probably spends more time on social networks and messages than on games.
Re. Axes, i guess they are just fine.
You only have problems with some portrait only apps but in that case you only have to close the phone, no real problem.

Opinions

I have a friend thinking of getting one of these phones and I wanted to get some opinions whether this is a good phone or a peace of junk

The games that are made for the xperia play are crap but you can run a lot of emulators on it that work really great with the hardware keys.
yes the emulators are great on the play
with a great gamepad
the games on the xperia play are just as good as on any other android phone
while there are better spec phones out there
the games for them can run just as good as on ours with chainfire3d
Lol ya except they cam play them without staring at fingers ad thumbs and only being able to see a small portion of the screen. Seriously though tell your friend if he likes game he will destroy everyone who doesnt have a play in multiplayer.

If you play games at all, get the Play. If you don't play games at all, then get whatever the hell looks cool, i dunno, iPhone cause why not, everyone and their mom has one.
I'd recommend this phone for serious gamers only.
Especially those who love old school emulators.

I agree and also disagree . This phone has a nice big screen and playing the touchscreen games off the droid market works as well as on any other phone out at the minute. The game pad is just an added extra for me. I enjoy/play with the emulators & fpse alot but even if you forget the gamepad it is still a good phone.
After rooting mine and freezing the bloat. Nothing i have thrown @ the phone has caused it any trouble apart from some fpse games, but thats the same with most phones even dual cores ones. Nothing is perfect but this phone does an above average job as a normal phone with the added bonus of amazing game play on emulators or any game that supports the game pad.

I do agree it is a good phone but they should have put a much nicer screen on it. My Iphone 2G had a nicer screen. The Play's screen is impossible to use in sunlight. It's just a bit of a shame. Other things lacking would be HD video recording and a top of the range camera. But don't get me wrong, it's still good and I love it.
ps. what have you froze mate, just rooted myself cos I was sick of the phone stuttering and general choppiness on the likes of Gameloft games. Looking for ways to improve performance.

Indeed in full on sunlight its not the best but indoors i thinks it is really a fully decent screen.
About what i have froze i followed the safe apps to remove thread here. Just froze most on the list i dont use and froze some not sure about to test if the phones ok after freezing (still figuring out what i want to be frozen as well). Mainly tho the following;
Moved all gameloft/preinstalled games to sd via titanium backup (free)
Anonymous useage stats
Iplayer
chinese keyboard
both the digital clocks
everything facebook related
google maps
media server
postcard
retail demo
setup guide
store
street view
support
talk
anything timescape related
twitter extension
+ a few others i have forgot
But i have not filled my phone full of crap i dont use. Just kept the stuff i use regularly and will install others as i see fit. Currently Internal Memory: 161mb used / 219mb free. Ram: 120mb used / 254 mb free.
The Good -
- Hardware Buttons work GREAT with emulators. Honestly this is an emulators fan dreams come true.
- Hardware buttone work GREAT with Gameloft games. You think they are good on the iphone? They are 100 times better on the Play.
- Android Market Games are starting to work pretty good with the Play. Lots of games support the D Pad even if they dont mention it.
The Bad -
- Auto Brightness still cant be disabled as a stock feature.
- Low RAM means sometimes games stutter a little bit. (This is hardly an issue, but if you look close you can see it in some games, so it's worth mentioning)
- More games need to start appearing
Conclusion -
I personally hate using touchscreen for games. My finger prodding on the glass gets completely agitated to the point it drives me insane. The hardware buttons as controllers is an awesome feature.
You get all the Android software working excellently as you would on any Android phone.
It is a solid gaming phone, but does have room for improvement. The screen has an excellent display, but it's not as good as some phones. The auto brightness is a part of this reason.
Battery Life is decent. However it's unlikely you can last 2 days without charging. You will need to charge every night.
Speakers are very decent. The loudest on a phone i have ever heard.
Gameloft games are cheap and plentiful. Forget almost every other developer though, decent games other than Gameloft games are almost non-existent.
Basically if you love gaming and enjoy Gameloft + Emulators, then this phone is most definatley for you. If you dont care about gaming onphone and just want a quick touchscreen game every now and again, then go for something else. Either an iPhone or a powerful Tegra 2 chipset.
Gamer's Phone
The obvious reason to get this phone is the controls.
Basically, if you game on your phone, get the Play. If not, get something else. It really is that simple.
The controls rock. Emulators are perfect. Nothing better than playing old school NES or Sega games. The gameloft games run great, and lots of games in the market have support but dont mention it. I sit at work and play all day long.
The analogs work better than you think they would although it takes some getting used to. I
As a phone I have no issues. Its just like any other android I've had. Dont let the specs fool ya, its pretty quick, camera is good enough for me and I've only used the front facing camera once. It was fine. Mine came with a class 2 sd card so I bought a class 10. Made a little difference. Noticeable at least.
I like it.

I beg to differ, the iPhone 2g had an inferior screen.
The Play's screen may not be good in the direct sunlight, but it's still far from the worst. I have no troubles reading stuff in direct sun. Sure, colors go to ****, so pictures and videos suck, but as a phone it's still completely usable.

[Q] What are the best and essential app for Honeycomb 3.2?

guys am new in the honeycomb, I have with Android for smartphones, I would like to know the opinion of you which are the best apps for tablet honeycomb?
Zynga Poker is a good, free poker game that works wonderfully on our big screen.
Pulse news reader and fuugo video are my fav apps at the moment.
gReader
IMDB
Dropbox
Evernote
Feedly, tapatalk, multipicture live wallpaper, thinking space, tunein radio pro, evernote and dropbox are my "must haves"
Best apps for you will depend on what u want to do with your tablet
Sent from my EPAD using Tapatalk
It's all about what you want to do with the tablet. Do you use it for gaming? Work? Productivity? If it is a good app for your phone its likely a good app for your tablet. Some make better use of the large screen than others but the only real apps that didn't really work for me were the odd game that relies on the accelerometer. Some accelerometer games work fine but some of them seem to have the controls flipped.
TuneIn Radio Pro is the best app I've used. Problem is that, once CBS decided to prevent streaming of their stations via any other app but Radio.com, TuneIn Radio Pro is much less compelling which is not the apps fault. It's amazing how many stations are owned by CBS. One reason there used to be effective media monopoly laws which apparently are no longer enforced.
Google Sky Map is great if you are into astronomy as is Star Chart, a similar app.
Random Factor MahJong is a great implementation of MahJong if you are into those tile games.
If you like HP calculators the best implementation I've found is HP12C Emulator by Rafel Dipold. It's the financial one (not the HP-15C scientific) but it's way worth the few bucks it costs (especially in comparison to the hundred or so a real one used to cost.) It's HUGE on a tablet but hopefully ICS will fix the scale issues between phone-centric and tablet apps.
If you are rooted, there's no comparison to Titanium Backup Pro.
ES File Explorer is my favorite file manager (Root Explorer is also good).
Without those apps, my days would be less productive or fun.
I quite love LogMeIn Ignition- it's expensive but well worth it.
JuiceDefender is pretty great- I can let my A500 sleep for a lot longer now.
MX Video Player is just boss- playback is perfect, and it's one of the few video players that you can add the external SD card easily.
Thumb Keyboard is really, really comfy.
And Google Voice is amazing (tablet interface could be a hell of a lot better, though).
(edited to add: Photoshop Touch is beautiful. Best thing that's ever come out of Adobe, IMO.)
Sent from my A500 using xda premium
big pictures look neat on these tablets. full screen. still blows me away.
Tablet Worthy
So I find that taptu is a great Reader app.
Open sudoku and shortyz crossword is super necessary as far entertainment.
Grooveip as a voip for your google voice account.
I agree, photoshop touch is super nice.
There are a bunch of good apps for honeycomb 3.2!

A cardboard app that mess up your mind

Hi there. We want some feedback.
We made this cardboard app to make "VR-goggles" less nerdy and more enjoyable for everyone presents.
youtube.com/watch?v=OGRZWKvhV-o
(It called VR Party Game at Google Play)
The idea is that this experience is something everyone can take a part of, on the users behalf. So far it have been a success at partys and social gatherings where everyone have a great time laughing when someone is trying to solve even the simplest task. Even some times people challenge each other with two cardboards
The features is messing up with the users real view with mirror vision, delay vision (2 second back in time) or upside-down vision.
We had some challenge with the lag, but now the camera pass -through flows pretty well. And we experience that the users only uses this for a short time while solving their task.
What do you think about this? Is there any feature you miss?
nice app for video
I think Var's vr video app is nice to watch videos. I like to watch video on this app and i feel
very good.
