Is it possible to reinstall the OTA onto the device to see if it picks it up after manually updating it?
I'm trying to read up if the OTA was usable on both the G2 and Desire Z.

Well that's what I did, I manually updated to ota, rooted installed the Z Rom but its not picking it up its doing connecting to tmo like it was doing on the vanilla froyo prior to ota so there are more files needed than the WiFi calling apk

Can anyone confirm that if u update with a official update, u will be unrooted
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Absolutely, and you may very well end up in a situation where it will be incredibly hard to get rooted again.

So u recommend not to update?

I wouldn't unless you are having problems with the phone or you are going to send it back to art.

I unrooted last week just to see if I could just in case I had to return to AT&T, it wasn't easy, but finally got it to work. I then used the LINUX(built a LINUX: UBUNTU bootable CD) method of rooting again, went flawlessly; no issues at all.
I un-rooted last night booting into Fastboot USB and running the ATT stock ROM given on the HTC website... finished in 5 minutes. Had to fix something un-related, but it was a good test to see if I could un-root.
Then I just used unrevoked3 to root again; no problems.
Ok I'm a rooted user here, but just a question, can I do the ota update via my phone and lose my soff setting from my root? Or will it properly update the device with keeping the soff? I was really thinking of keeping the royal ginger I have at the moment, but don't want to risk the soff going to son and thus screwing my phone, advice? Thanks.
One more thing, if I don't update via the servers how soon after will the port be avail with all the cool stuff I'm using now?

If your using royal ginger you will not be offered the update. If your on a stock Rom that's rooted yes you will be offered the update and it more than likely would come with a new hboot. Which means yes you would root and your s-off
Shouldn't take long if not minutes for it to be rooted again.

Hi everyone,
I got my new desire z two days ago. I am on holiday so i cannot get my device rooted with computer. I have read lots of topics and decided not to use visionary. Now i wonder if it is possible to do it without computer or just with an android based tablet pc.
Thank you for all now...
This is the recommended guide to follow (Gfree, no visionary)

That being said, there is no way to do it safely without a computer that has adb...

THIS! ADB is not required. I rooted my first G2 using terminal emulator on the phone, no ADB required.
I was fully aware of that thread, but I guess i should have emphasized the word "safely". The guide I posted is the undisputed safest way to do it

If you read down a little bit it says "WARNING: A few Desire Z users have reported being stuck on the HTC logo after following this guide. Without having a Desire Z myself, it is difficult to figure out why (since this simple automates known working methods). For the time being, I recommend Desire Z users obtain permanent root using one of the other guides out there." The op of that thread recommends using a different method. I would wait until you get back from your holiday and get to a computer.
I read all the ways to get rooted but visionary didn't work. I think device must be downgraded before get rooted. So is there a way to downgrade desire z without adb required?

Sorry to say that you need adb and your pc to start the process. I've been rooted only for a week now.

Sure i will add you when i need some help about adb. I am still on holiday so just reading topics about desire z. I think i will turn back home on 16th of July and get my computer again Thank you for helping me...
By the way, why it is so hard to get rooted on desire z. I had a samsung spica and advent vega tegra tablet, i only connected devices to pc and got rooted by one click. Are all desire devices hard (complex) to get rooted?

If anyone is going or went to the T-Mo store to get the update today and had the leaked version and the new update worked let us know. I have a feeling it won't. If it did, did they check the phone or anything before doing it?
Thanks!
I would call ahead to the store and check if they have received the SD cards yet. The store I work at still has not received them yet.
Or apply update yourself, download it from the tmo forums or xda, rename the file PC10IMG reboot into bootloader, holding volume down and power until it boots, then it scans for the file and continue from there.. its so easy

Does that really work ? I thought the update.zip file is different than the PC10IMG.zip. Will it work with the leaked 2.3.3?

They are different files. Renaming the OTA (update.zip) to PC10IMG.zip does not work. Someone will have to post the PC10IMG.zip from the T-Mobile SD card.

Oh ok, think i skimmed through and saw it posted like that.. probably was the leak version.. but either way, its basically like that.. rename it to update, boot into recovery.. then click apply update

I'm waiting for someone to post the PC10IMG.zip file myself. I'm running the leaked gingerbread but I don't feel like going through the trouble of downgrading to 2.2 so I can update to 2.3.4 when I can just load up the PC10IMG.zip file.
Eventually the files will get posted, I'm just waiting for the cards to show up at my store.
Just went to the tmo store by me. They haven't received them yet. But at least they seemed to know what I was talking about .

what are the odds the store update will work over the leaked version? I've tried everything to get my phone off the leak and it wont work. it keeps locking up at the debug step trying to temp root to do the downgrade.

It would probably have to, seeing as the leaked version was sent out on replacement handsets.

It worked. A store I went to in South Tampa where I live had it. Now if I can figure out have to root it.
I hope someone posts that file soon , I'm going crazy just setting up adb.
Edit: Ive quit even trying to set up adb, for whatever reason I'm too retarded to
even set it up, let alone use it.

it was a major pain...i got adb setup but the programming instuctions I had to type I got stuck on one part, not sure why. But the stores version worked thank god.
I got the whole adb downgrade thing to work , until the very end, where it didnt try installing the update, instead a adb failed and said my drivers wouldnt work
After 4 hours and combining steps from 2 different downgrading guides, I got it to work. I didn't notice anything really different between the leaked and ota.
Anyway I have a feeling the 4 hours of frustration was less painful than going to the store.

If it is the original file released by tmobile (read: not modified/altered), it will work on a factory stock phone.

My phone is rooted, clockwork recovery gives me an error (status 7) with file verification disabled. The file was downloaded to the /cache folder and moved to the sdcard root folder and renamed to update.zip. I was just wondering if naming it to PD15IMG.zip would actually make a difference or just would not even load.
PD15IMG.ZIP files should only be flashed in bootloader. Don't try and flash it in recovery. It won't work.

Do you know what the update file is called?
I loaned my phone to my wife for the day as she wanted to try it out, and she thought she would be helpful by downloading the update. She handed the phone back to me with the error screen - panicked for a moment...
Anyway, the stupid notification won't go away, and I'd love to go in and delete the update file so I can get rid of the notification, but I don't know what the filename is.
On a side note, why is my phone getting an OTA update anyway? I thought rooted phones didn't receive OTA updates?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
The file is in /cache and has a filename OTA_GLACIER_TMOUS... can't remember the rest of the filename. What I did was just choose the ”discard” option and the phone deleted the file and no more notification. I think we get the option to update since we are using a stock rooted rom and not a custom one.
That makes sense. Thanks.
Now to look for a rooted stock rom with the update built in....
What can I say? I like stock, I just hate bloat.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
There is a stock, rooted, debloated ROM in the dev section. Its a ways down, but its there.

Actually, I'm looking for just rooted stock with the update, untouched.
Bloat is open to interpretation.
Thanks though, I'll take a look and see what's available.
I'd actually consider cm in the long run, but I'm waiting for confirmation one way our the other for ICS before I make a decision.

Here is one with the latest update that is rooted. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20156306. Remember you have to be rooted already and create a backup to restore your settings afterwards.
