I love using the Engadget app to keep up with daily news, but no matter what I try I cannot watch the embedded videos within the stories.....
The ones that link to YouTube are fine as you can choose the browser or the YouTube app.
But their native videos don't play for me. I currently get the choice of viewing through double twist or streaming media player, both of which say "Sorry, this video cannot be played".
Anyone any idea what format these endgadget videos are in? And how I can get the engadget app to choose a player capable of playing them?
Moved to Themes and Apps. Also deleted your post in General.
Please only post one thread on the same subject, and try to post in the correct forum.
Thanks.

how did u get to view you tube on your 8125? i have orb 2.0 and it keeps asking me for some codecs.
You have to download certain codecs and install them from there website. The codec that i installed to get the youtube videos to play was the ffdshow codec.
what do you guys mean? go to tinytube.net on your phone and you can download any video from 6 different sources, including, google, myspace, and break just to name a few.
its awesome

I second that. Nothing to install, just download away.

You CANNOT view youtube videos with tinytube.net. Plus it seems im always being queued to view a damn video. Orb is faster compared to the quality...only downside is you have to have your computer running. Which I dont find to be a problem personally
but most youtube videos are on google and myspace anyway
It seems that none of the offered solutions properly play streaming video. Anyone found any other way to do so?

I followed these instructions and the work very very well on my WM6 Kaiser.

Kind of off topic, but a little similar... Is anyone having problems downloading streaming media from these sites? I have an AT&T Tilt and whenever I click on a streaming link that is flashed based, Realplayer will come up and tell me this file format is not supported. But, there is no option anywhere to uninstall this thing! I also tried adding all associations /w TCPMP but still no luck. Anyone else running into this?
I'll be new to Android, and don't really know what is available. I did a search for Android Marketplace, and got "This is a showcase for some of the featured and top ranked applications and games available on Android Market. For a comprehensive, up-to-date list of the tens of thousands of titles available, check out Android Market on your handset."
It's not particularly easy to find stuff, when you don't really know what you're looking for. I will find out tomorrow what the marketplace is like, on the EVO.
But, in the few remaining hours before that becomes possible, I wanted to find a few applications to install and play around a bit and try to get a feel for the system.
So, what should I/will you install tomorrow (or later)? I'm sure I'll find some cool stuff on my own eventually, but some suggestions from current enthusiasts would be welcomed by me, and others I'm sure.
I figure everyone's got a favorite app or 5, how about some suggestions?
one of the neatest, but only useful in clear sky at night, outside, preferably in the country, is google sky maps.
fring rocks for syncing up skype and gtalk. you'll dig it for the new vid call thing, i'm sure
weatherbug elite is my weather app of choice
andexplorer is what i use to navigate through my sdcard
cubed is a good music app. very nice looking (app actually spelled with superscript 3, if you go looking for it on market)
chrome to phone is good for sending links to the phone, but i think it needs froyo
google navigation should come stock, but it's a rockstar
vlc remote
terminal emulator
others - where, layar, wikitude, and adfree for sure, if you're rooted
Excellent list, thanks!

Thank, but I am looking for something to play my locally stored music and videos, not streaming.
I found and installed the cubed app, but it just says it can't find files in the playlist or some such thing, and the only choice I have is to exit. So a no go on that one also.
I'll keep looking
let me know when you find it the player!
im kinda disappointed that there is no flash viewer (*.flv) for files that reside on the sd card. unfortunately it looks like we have to wait for coreplayer to come out.

Just out of curiosity, since the X10 doesn't support flash (hopefully, that will change someday), then how is it possible to watch videos on youtube with the youtube app?
Does it stream the content using h.264 or something similar? Is the youtube app a standalone flash player?
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find anythig but rants about the X10 not supporting flash when I searched the forum.

good question maybe is like in winmo
or because youtube and android are from google maybe a trick is hidden there xD idk
You could ask the same of USTREAM , BBCi PLAYER and MPLAYER (beeb player) and how does SKYFIRE stream media from sites?! as they all do the same
the mobile app essentially streams the 3gp version of videos from the mobile version

to my knowledge, it uses some mediaserver thingie, which apparently worked on my dumb T700 as well..
THAT phone certainly doesn't support flash, and when it failed to stream it says failed to connect to mediaserver..
The videos on youtube are all converted from the original format to various other formats including H.264 and that's what is streamed to modern phones.
On the flash player they're playing a .flv file, which is just a container for the H.264 video. (Also, youtube always keep the original file on their servers in case they change change something and need to reencode, eg. if they increase the max resolution or something.)
Thanks for the replies everybody. Now I know.
/and knowing is half the battle.

Hi , I have recently Installed the JIT compiler and from then my pre -installed Youtube is not working properly. As soon as click on the video from Youtube app...it keeps on saying loading video and never loads..i installed the custom app from other sources but no luck .help me in fixing this issue.
I just downloaded mobo player and the codec file for it. I wanted to play video's directly on the internet on my xoom. I thought downloading this would help me but video's are still not playing?
I do not understand the media directory thing is there anything I am missing.
I picked media directory to be my downloads in my Astro file. This is right out of the box. I have done nothing to unlock or root this device.
Can anyone please explain to me what I need to do to play video's from a web page on the net. For example I went to a site for Las Vegas wanted to play video of Terry Feder show would not play?
I'm pretty good at following directions. I understand PC very well just learning about cell phones and tablets.
I only downloaded the codec file because the video still wasn't playing.
I do not want to do anything that will mess up my xoom?
Sorry I think I should have posted this in questions forum.
Did you try tapping and holding the video you want to play then selecting soft decoding? You have to do that to a large majority of videos for the xoom.
Yes I did. When the video appears on the screen there is a small blue dice in the center with a ? on it. There seems to be lots of videos that won't play. Is there anything in the codec file that I need to change. I saw the soft decoding for one of the video extensions?
Just found something that says default using soft decoding in settings I checked it. Still no luck. You tube videos play fine
When I tap the video the screen turns light blue but nothing comes up and their are no options available to select.
you said your trying to play videos from a site. What site and what video format? Link?
Go to metacafe.com any video it does not work. That is just one of the sites. I cannot tell what the video format is? How can i see that. On the right hand bottom of my screen it says autoplay ON. I do not know if that is from Mobo app or something else.
took a spin around the world wide web and seems the videos on your site metacafe are FLV files.
go to the market.. install one of these in the list and see if any will work.
not sure which ones are compatible with the xoom so just go in and check on the tech details. better yet go there with your xoom so it will filter out which ones will work.
you can also just search "flv player" w/o quotes in the market and see what you come up with.
https://market.android.com/search?q=flv+player&so=1&c=apps
That site seems to use a bunch of different kinds of video. Hulu videos wont work, but the flash videos will if you install flash, obviously. Moboplayer is for mp4, avi, mpeg, and other types of video commonly not found streaming on websites.
Just called Motorola and figured out that Flash Player needed to be downloaded. Do I feel stupid. I thought it came with it and was on it when I got it. I then went back to the site and the video played.
Do you think MoboPlayer will interfere with anything on my tablet. Should I remove it?
Or should I leave it. Don't even know if it works on the xoom. It did not work to get the FLV file working that is supports. Any input would be appreciated.
keep it. it can play other movie formats.

amazing that an XDA member of a xoom tablet has not heard about moboplayer. thats wild.. rockplayer is made by the same dev that made moboplayer. mobo player is a really great video app! a must have..
alright guys. need some help here. I have an Iconia n have the at&t verse app installed. I have downloaded some videos for my kids to watch when we go on vacation from the app. yet when I try to watch them I get a native video player error. I guess my question is is there any way to watch these videos within the app or thru a different player???
Presumably, your videos are in avi format. The native player can't handle that, you need to either convert the video to a compatible format, or download one of the many apps that can playback different video files. I am using rockplayer, others have suggested moboplayer. You should be able to find them both in the market.
