had the phone a couple of weeks and never tried the GPS on it ,so this morning decided to give it ago
in premuim navigation or google navigation it just says searching for GPS all the time with m3g on or off, out side with 3g on i get a spot on fix in no via that in no time but if i try to get the gps to get a fix it just keeps saying searching for GPS
i know it normally takes longer for its first ix and then should be ok but i cant get a gps fixe and yes GPS is enabled
any help would be great thanks
Just a update with 3 g on good navigation provides a fix and directions but with 3g off Google says mobile data lost,on premuim navigation it just searches for god and can not provide directions even with 3 g on
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
just a update after a bit of trying things out today
got GPS in car panel after a while and now it gets a fix very quick
premium navigation works well on 30 day trial and is very acurate for proximity to junctions etc, this does work with 3G turned off no problem (although 3 g does need to be on to activate the trial)tried it tonight in awful weather and never once lost the GPS during the journey
google navigation again gets a very quick fix but will not work unless 3G is on other wise you get the voice saying loss data connection when trying to plan the route
google maps very quick fix and only needed GPS on
locations, not sure how this is working but im sure even with just GPS on i was getting acurate info or maybe it was pre-cached info not sure
Thanks, this helpful.
So after you got your initial fix, the next time you start navigation, the fix was quick?
Did you also test that without using 3g, so creating a fix without 3g, and if so, was that quick as well?

yes fix without 3g was quick
mine just will not fix the GPS....it finds 8 satellites in couple of seconds, but then just keeps "determining position"
without a determined position, my nav app can't do anything (copilot btw)...
Anyone any suggestions?

Locations sadly does not work without data connection, even with gps turned on.
So whats the use of preloading the maps?

Exactly! I pre-loaded with maps of Europe so as not to incur data charges - but Locations is useless without a data connection. How do you use the maps with GPS only? Does anyone know??
You guys are doing something wrong. I'm in Australia and Locations works fine without data connection after having downloaded the maps. It just takes some time to get fix (some 2 minutes) if it was a long time since I last got one. I can get directions fine without any data connection as well.
I'm also having problems with gps, worked fine when.I got the phone but now after I think the third ota update it just keeps searching if I only have gps switched on and not wireless networks. With wireless networks one (with or without gps, dosnt make any difference) I'm consistentlyplaced 2km away and it dosnt.improve the accuracy with time.
So I'm thinking that the updates have messed it up? Did email HTC support but nothing yet from that.
I'm always unable to get GPS fix, even if I'm in an open space. I used an app called "GPS Status", I was connected to 7/8 GPS satellite, but I wasn't able to get my position (in Maps, Locations, Latitude and Nav). How is that possible?

So you're not able to use navigation stuff? I'm still waiting to get mine, no availability here in Milan, but for me GPS is a critical feature, so if not works properly it will be a big deal!!! Let me know on that!!!
I've noticed that I am unable to get any GPS fix indoors, even when I am sitting close to a window. I presumed it was because I wasn't outside but this thread is worrying. I'll try to get a fix outside and report back. One thing's for sure - the GPS on the HD doesn't seem as good as the one on my Desire, which found GPS indoors.

I can't get the fix even if I'm outside. I was in Rome in the past 3 days, and I never got the fix! The iPhone 4 worked fine...
UPDATE: I got a fix, pretty quickly, outside (in a city) but it is still unable to get one indoors - including on buses and trains. My Desire managed this.
Does the HD's sat nav work in a car? Are people using it for in-car navigation?
I had problems getting my GPS to get a fix, so I downloaded GPS test from market and noticed I actually had 11 satellites that i was connected to. When GPS test showed how accurate the tracking was I exited out of GPS test, and to my surprise I got a fix almost instantly in Google Maps/My Tracks and even Locations.
I then took a drive, first with my DHD laying in the passenger seat on the first trip, and then with the DHD in my inner pocket of my jacket. Using my tracks I recorded the route and it had tracked me perfectly on both trips. Only time it stopped tracking was when I went in to a mall, but it picked up again when I left.
I live in sweden and the car is not a convertible, and 3G was off.
If the gps test thing actually helped I do not know, so feel free to test and report.
edit: I tried it again and the only thing about gps test "helping" is to see when the DHDs gps actually get a fix. It seems to be slow as crap on fixating but once you get the fix it tracks you very good. Right now I'm indoors(wooden house out in the countryside) and I had to wait about 2-3 minutes with 8-12 satellites in use and standing near a window before it got my position. After that I went back to where I tried before and it is still tracking me with 15-30meters accuracy and currently 7-8 satellites in use.
Those with GPS issues can try this, remove the battery for 10-15 mins then try GPS app again, ports can get messed up if we try out multiple GPS apps, removing the battery for a length of time should clear cache and or memory. Just try it and report back.
I tried alreay couple times, no luck, only fix is reset phone, but not happy, working fine couple days, and issue again, reset again, really not happy, this only one thing i am not happy on my dhd. ANY ADVICE or HELP ?? thanks..
Hello,
I have some problems too with my GPS. Some times the fix can be very quick but it’s not systematic.
What I noticed:
- When I activate the GPS option all the time, the fix is almost always fast. Sometimes it’s still very long: so in GPS status I reset the cache and the fix is after very quick.
- When I activate the GPS only when I need (turn on and turn off before and after using Navigation), I never get a fix. Resetting the cache in GPS Status or restarting Android does not solve the problem. So I launch several times GPS Status to reset cache and several times Navigation and after a while I can get a fix…. I think there is a real problem with the management of the GPS, because in GPS status I can see 11 satellites and Android is still searching!!!
Is there anyone who noticed that turning on and off GPS can seriously degrade the performances to get a fix?
I done few very similar things, clear cache, reset phone, but still I had feeling something was wrong, then I find I had faulty gps receiver, hardware issue, replaced for new one, thanks to very good store manager, and now I have black DHD, before was brown, and already new one is have all latest update installed, GPS lock in couple seconds anytime on open air, inside house It will lock in around 1 - 2 minutes longest, no more resets, no more clearing cache, working on 100 %..., this is just what I find myself, and I glad I had replaced mine old for brand new - and not just repaired..
Damned, I hope this is not an hardware issue ! Maybe you have some updates installed on your new phone which solve the problem ?
Is there anyone who noticed the same issues or I am the only one ?

Just received my HD and having trouble with GPS. I went straight into Google Maps and selected Use GPS but after about 3-4 minutes it says that no GPS was found. Going into External GPS settings and unticking 'Manage GPS automatically' results in Google Maps saying that no device was found straight away rather than the 3-4 minute wait.
Any ideas?
EDIT: going into Google Maps options > GPS Settings and setting it to Managed by Windows results in me getting a 'Seeking GPS satellites' message but it stays on 0.

ok now just be patient and go to a place where you can see the sky
getting a fix the first time takes some time. you can speed this up using the QuickGPS under programs. This downloads a satellite prediction map so the receiver can find satellites much quicker. Otherwise the receiver has to scan for bypassing satellites, which can take a few minutes to complete.

Thanks Gogem. I didn't want to but I gave a hard reset a try then went straight to Google Maps and still no luck. After saying it was looking for satellites for 3-4 minutes it said it couldn't connect to GPS, cancel or retry

as 6Fg8 mentioned you have to see the sky, inhouse or between tight buildings or in a canyon GPS isn't working. and.. this is by design of GPS (!) it can take up to 12 minutes to find the satellites! Technical background: all GPS infos streamed by the satellites have a very low power and data rate. QuickGPS can reduce this time. So be patient. Maybe a 3rd party app like "GPS Gate" (commercial, but 14 day trial available) may help.
Do you have another device to check the GPS receiving from your position, maybe your Blackstone is broken?

Thanks. I just installed Co-Pilot 7 and checked the GPS signal. It must be because I'm inside. I can get 3 satellites on the receiver screen so it obviously is working. I'll just need to take it outside and see how I go then.

in theory you need 3 satellites (of total 31 active today) to get your x-y position on earth and (optional) a 4th satellite to get your altitude. each satellit is running in an orbit of 20,000 km. therefore your max height can be 20,000 km ;-)
in praxis you may see ca 6..8 satellites.

yes in theory, but a lot of people mistake that as a hard requirement->when you pass, you must have a good reception for routing and such.
if you have seen the satellite graph, hte one with two or three con-centric circles, and satellite in or around those circles
you need at least two satellites in the inner most circle (45 degrees) to get a good lock, otherwise you woudl need more satellites to get a good lock.
the circles represent degrees from the verticle point of reference, ie think of you as the axis, and your feet is the origin.
Yeah in theory you need 3 points to triangulate. But I've never had a GPS give me my lat and long from just 3 satellites.
When I first opened my Polaris some time ago, it would not get a gps lock either. I had ordered an external gps antenna, so I hooked it up and got a lock real quick. Since then, I guess the gps chip in the phone knows what the gps signals taste like, so it always gets quick locks and works like a champ. In fact, it worked so well, I never used the external antenna again
LOL must be one of those new fangled learning chips you have there

thats the reason why software like quickgps exists, it lets the gps chip smell where the satellites are. kind of odor transmission tool ...

my touch HD gets signals indoors in three different houses. i was sitting quite far from the window, one of the building is my office -> thick concrete walls, etc. i know i should be cheering, but i'm very confuzzled... HOOOW IS IT WORKING with out a clear sight of the satellites?!?!
I was stunned (in a scary sort of way) just how accurate google maps got me based purely on mobile signal (before it tracked any satellites)...
It put the blue dot about 10feet to the left of where I was standing!
i dont know but i think gps is broken - i am loosing signal while driving in highway if i dont have hand up almost near roof - i made today almost 300km with avg speed 140km/h and touch hd gps *realyworking time* like 1/10 of whole trip. I realy think there must be some serios problem, because my co-driver with iphone google maps have totaly no problem
Hello,
I have Google maps and Tom Tom 7 installed on my Touch HD, but im having problems. The GPS seems to take ages to initialise and then when it does, it keeps dropping. When I go into the GPS settings in tom tom, its finding more than 3 satalites so in theory it should be fine....
I just wondered if anyone else has this issue or possible is my device faulty? Any feedback is appreciated.
Thanks
Cb25
I never have this problem with tomtom and iguidance. maybe your unit is faulty
what rom and radio version do you have? maybe changing radio version will solve the problem
Stupid question now but how do I find out the version of my rom or version?
Did you update the satellites with QuickGPS before u tried?!
I had the same problem with tomtom, it seemed to be fine when i disabled agps in settings
I experience this issue whenever i don't soft reset my phone after 3-4 days.
It takes longer than usual to get the satellite, and whenever it does, it keeps dropping. A soft reset fixes it up.
Inbuilt GPS
Thanks for that Psygnosis84! I was using Route 66 and could only get 1-2 or 0 satellites. I had used the GPS download program to update the ephemeris about 12 hours ago so it was not that! After a few hours of 0 satellites, I came home and my TomTom One found plenty and I've been struggling to figure out what in the heck could be wrong with the inbuilt GPS.
I did a soft reset and there they are again! So thanks for the advice! Boy, this is not a good sign about the inbuilt GPS if we have to do this regularly!
BTW: I have a (free) test program called GPS test (see http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=24687) and that was the ONLY way I could find out the COM port/BAUD rate for the GPS. When I rang HTC, they said "Oh, we just see if Google Maps works!" Would you believe it!!! Fortunately this program told me the GPS was on COM4 at 9600 BAUD.
Are there any other useful programs out there for testing/using the GPS? I am using Route 66 for road navigation and it is pretty good. I was told it has more up to date maps than CoPilot 7. I am also using Memory-Map for off road navigation and that is a really excellent (intuitive) program.
I've made it a habit that whenever my battery runs low after 2 days using it, i just soft reset it and then charge it.
I'm using radio 1.09.25.14 so it would be great to hear from people using the other radios to see if they are experiencing the same thing.
Regardless of QuickGPS being up to date and even AGPS turned off, after 3 days it just goes a bit crazy. I'm wondering why a soft reset fixes it up, could it just be a software problem?
Mine is driving me around the bend.
Using TomTom 7, it works fine for a time and then the GPS stops working. Exiting and restarting TomTom always brings it back. Time scale is random, it can work for hours before going tits up.
I've tried three different Roms, five different radios, two different versions of TomTom 7, AGPS is disabled, GPS mode set to 1.
It's starting to look like a hardware problem.

It's like every other Windows operating system. You have to reboot it at least once a week. Technicians go through training to learn to tell people, "Please reboot your computer", before any other troubleshooting
Hi Everyone.
I think I'm suffering the same problem as originally stated.
I'm using TT6 Nav (with WVGA Tool) which I originally bought for my N95 and used for 18month without much problem.
Using the HTC internal GPS I can establish a position easily but once I'm on the move, even down my road with between 6-9 satellites visable the GPS signal will drop out and come back several times per minute.
GoogleMaps works absolutely fine with the internal GPS.
I get the feeling this might be some sort internal comms issues between the GPS device and the TT6 rather then the GPS sat' signal itself.
I have an external GPS receiver (because it has much better battery life) so will attempt to use that but it's not as straight forwards as the N95 to configure so I'll build up some enthusiasm and see how it goes.

I may have fixed my GPS dropout problem by moving TomTom 7 program files from the device memory to the SD card. I did this as an experiment two days ago and haven't had a single dropout since. Fingers crossed, it's early days but looking good. TomTom runs fine on the SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=516219
Update:
Well running TomTom from the SD card didn't fix the problem, it worked fine for a couple of days and then started dropping out again.
These dropouts are totally random and may occur hours apart. Shutting down and restarting Tomtom always brings the GPS signal back.
I'm now beginning to think that the problem is in some way related to the carrier, although AGPS is switched off on my device.
My problems started on holiday a few weeks ago, with dropouts occurring whilst roaming in France and Italy, my switch to the SD card was whilst I was in Switzerland but the problem returned as soon as I got back to France and has since completely gone away now that I am back in the UK.
I tried just about everything after searching these forums for many hours and am at a complete loss, I've tried ROMs, radios, patches, registry changes, you name it, I've tried it. Now I'm back in the UK and on my home carrier (three), I can't test it as the problem has gone away but I'm pretty sure it will return the next time I cross the Channel.
I am in touch with TomTom tech support in the hope of obtaining the latest version of TT7 software that is certified for the Touch HD, but I really don't think it's a TomTom problem, so don't hold out any great hope there.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
have you already tried this? Enter the registry and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/GPSIntermediateDriver/Drivers/GPSOneDevice/PollIntervall. There you set the PollIntervall to 3000 instead of 1000. With this tweak and QuickGPS turned on I got my signal after less than 10 seconds and I never lost it.

Based on your experiece, that you have the problem in one country and not in another, I´m pretty sure it must be carrier related.
I live in Sweden and work in Denmark. I drive every day from Malmoe Sweden to Copenhagen. I have absolutely no problem on the danish side. But after passing the bridge to the swedish side, the gps signal get lost randomly. It can be lost up to approx 1 min. but always comes back, just to get lost again.
It could be some kind of interference due to the roaming - well, I dont know. I´ve tried everything. Change roms, software etc.
Can more people relate to this problem??
It seems to be okay if I lock to a particular carrier.
I spent most of last summer in France, locked my phone to Orange FR and had no problems at all. The downside is that if Orange signal is weak, the phone interrupts TomTom to ask if you want to change networks and you have to decline using small boxes whilst driving.
I was in France again in December and let it pick it's own carrier, I got dropouts again.
I'm off to France again this weekend and shall again lock the phone to Orange FR, fingers crossed.
Update:
It is to do with the phone/GPS interface.
I set it to manual on Orange F and all was fine until I noticed the GPS slowing down, then a phone message popped up asking me to choose a network (presumably because of low Orange signal), then the message disappeared, phone re connected to Orange and GPS went back to normal.
It seems that even if we disable AGPS, there is still some connection between the GPS and the phone section.
I got my streak 2 days ago and have yet to lock a GPS signal after leaving it outside for 15 minutes and keeping it on all day next to a window. I've tried turning on/off the GPS and rebooting with no success. Any ideas?
Have you tried flashing the ROM?
not that it helps but mine locks almost instantly. This was with 1.6 and 2.1 that i currently have. I use GPS daily and this was the first thing I checked...
Have you tried in an open area away from buildings?
You may be near a window but say the satellites its trying to lock on to are come from the other side of the building/house?
For example I used to have an apartment on the 3rd floor facing north and it would take forever to get a lock near a window or even out on my balcony. The second i left my apartment and went down the hallway to the window on the other side of the building (south side) i'd get a lock instantly.
Not saying south is the way the device should be pointing, but your location does help you get speedy locks.
I haven't got my streak yet but i'm pretty familiar with reg-editing windows mobile devices to get a lock instantly (cab in my sig for example).
Make sure you have the correct aGPS server and aGPS is enabled (i don't know how to do that on android yet but look through menus and see if you can find that).

I had a similar issue, I did a factory reset and everything works great now!!! Maybe that will help....
Still no luck...
I tried a factory reset over the weekend and still had no success. My old HTC Fuze works fine in all the same places, so it is definitely an issue with the Streak and/or the build AT&T put on it.
I called Dell about this too - they suggested the device was working fine since it picks up a location when you choose the "Use wireless networks" in Locations. I tried to explain that this data come from Google's database of cell towers and WiFi hotspots, not the GPS signal, but I don't think they understood. I tried several other GPS diagnostic apps and none of them pick up any GPS signal or otherwise work at all, so I know there is something wrong.
I asked to escalate the issue and to get a replacement unit, so hopefully that does the trick.
Have you modified APN? (Remember to enable "supl")
Did you turn on the data connection?
New unit works
The new unit worked right away. I picked up 8 satellites sitting on my couch within 30 seconds - no where near line-of-sight with the sky and where none of my other gps-enabled devices work.
Hi...
Up until Sunday, my Sat Nav on either Co Pilot or Google Navigation was perfect - it knew exactly where I was and was incredibly accurate (and I use it a lot!!).
On Sunday, for some reason, both sat nav apps can't seem to pin point my location and think I'm up to 30 metres away from where I actually am.. which then has a problem with navigation as it thinks I'm on another street (or if I'm on the motorway then it thinks I'm in a field!!!)
I tried re-installing the phone software (using PC Companion, so it was completely a clean install) and this still hasn't helped and it has happened for the last couple of days.
Can anyone help me?
Do you have AGPS active?
It might help.
Hi TuxStyle,
I've got all the options active..
It has been working without problems since I got the phone, I travel A LOT, sometimes I think too much, but it's never done this..
Since Sunday it's just become very inaccurate and annoying as it thinks I'm on a different road.
None of the settings have changed and I've re-flashed the phone using SEUS and re-installed the apps to make sure it wasn't a setting.
Still having problems...
This exact same thing happened to me on Friday.
After many months of my GPS working impressively flawlessly,
suddenly it is totally useless...
Loses signal a lot, cannot accurately locate me, etc.
No change in settings, no new apps installed, nothing...
HOW STRANGE!!!!
Sorry to hear that My_immortal, though I'm glad someone is experiencing this as well.
Don't flash your phone again, it doesn't help!!!
It might have happened earlier for me, though I hadn't used my phone for sat nav since Thursday (when it was working fine)...
Do you think there is something with the satellites? (Highly unlikely since there's just 2 of us experiencing...) or something to do with hardware?
Mine is R2BA026 as well, UK, Unlocked
hmm.. i suppose a lot of factors affect how accurate gps is... like.. how many satellites the phone is using for triangulation.. any buildings/obstacles whatever nearby that can cause interference(?)
mine works great though, 10m accuracy. without gps, and just 3g alone, it's a crappy 500m.
you can download an app called GPS status from the market (free), shows you how many satellites your phone is locked on (mine usually fluctuates around 10~11) BUT i'm not sure if it's a fluke or real, but i think it is real, because it showed me 10m accuracy, when i checked on google maps, it mentioned 10m too.
Hi Tookieboy,
Yeh on G Maps, I get accuracy of 10m, but when using Google Navigation or Co Pilot for actual sat navigation, it thinks I'm on another road (or in a field next to the road I'm actually on), so before it was pristine and knew exactly where i was, but now it doesn't..
no settings have been changed so it seems strange..
Co Pilot shows good signal from 11 satellites so again... confused :s
clearing the cache help? maybe a bad byte somewhere? i dunno..

Seems to be fine here in Canada thus far. Used it today and it was spot on. I do not use the AGPS just gps and so far so good.
Hi Rockjock, thanks for your input, but I'm still having problems.
I have 11 satellites showing, so technically it should be positioning me on the correct road.
I have tried all variations of the location settings.
I had a look at the cache and it appears empty :s
Any other ideas? It's just strange that it started randomly on Sunday..
My_Immortal, have you had any luck?
AGPS helps to get the lock faster.
I didn't try driving navigation. Only walking and from what i see, i'm about 10m away.
Maybe if two roads are close i would have the same problem.
I'll do a test in weekend.
I tried it yesterday, still unusable.
Oddly, it could locate me accurately when still,
but when my car was moving it lost signal often
and the accuracy grew smaller and larger,
so no use in navigation...

tried it out last nite and again it was spot on. Speed was almost perfect and it did find me n the right roads and was dead on. If it just happened all of a sudden it could be a satellite issue. But you need only 3 for a positive lock. BTW I using co-pilot live 8 ... have you another handset to try out?
i'm havin same issue today with google navagation but everything is workin alright with co-pilot.. since google nav is beta version here in canada, that could be the issue for me...
Did you try the GPS test from the Phone's service menu?
just in case you don't know, the combination to access the service menu is..
m b b m b m m b
m: menu (left most button)
b: back (right most button)

i wasn't aware of it. thanks for the info
Since my phone arrived that i can't get a GPS signal lock.
GPS Status can indeed see the sattelites but phone can't lock a signal...
After a lot of cache and factory wipes still no luck.
Anyone else having this problem?
How fast can you get a GPS signal lock?
I would like to see some other opinions before i send it back to warranty because it might be something fixable..
P.S: I've searched all around the forum and the web and i couldn't find a solution for this.
Cold boot lock 180 - 250 seconds .

I had similar strange issues the first 2 days.
Then when I finally had a lock, I started using gps more and it works fine now.
It's almost like the gps module had to be warmed up
I read somewhere someone had a similar issue in the beginning and then it worked fine.
I'm also keeping an eye on my gps functionality..

I think i'll keep trying until i get a first lock before i send it back to warranty..
Just flashed back to KE2 to see if it's really not fw related.
I'll post the results after some tests
Do you guys have location service turned on? Not the one based on wifi but cell service?
try the following and tell us if it helped:
1) turn off the wifi- and cell based gps support (this doesn't help you much and sends your pos data to big G)
2) download "GPS Status & Toolbox" app from the market
3) download the actual satellite vectors with this tool (this you will have to do regularly, around once a week)
4) go out, start your nav app, do NOT move (easier for the GPS to get a fix)
5) come back in and tell us if that helped.
Cheers

Will do.
I'll report back as soon as i test it
Thanks
Also make sure you have 3G data (not wifi) turned on.
I noticed that when 3G data is not on lock takes ages.

Everything works fine now.. I didn't know that was necessary to have 3G enabled.. At least the first lock.. After that, with 3G ON i was able to get locks within <15 seconds. Also, after this, with 3G OFF, and after rebooting phone, i got a lock within <15 seconds..
I guess my GPS is not broken after all
Thanks everyone who helped
I don't have 3G and neither do I enable any network. Here is a screenshot i took todays while sitting at a caffee. Maybe the fix takes a minute or two, but then it's very stable, does not loose the connection easy.
ive always locked in about 10 secs from day one every firmware ive tried, always held a solid lock too, best gps ive used yet phone or otherwise.
I'm now having fast locks too without 3G.. Even inside my house, on a 4 floors building (i'm on first) with all windows closed, i'm getting locks within 30 seconds.. Not bad. With 3G ON, it gets a lock within 20 seconds max.
Haven't tried outside yet though.. Will do tomorrow with 3G ON & OFF so i can compare both.

it may have been the timing but i couldn't get a lock as soon as i got out of the subway station on saturday within 20~30 sec ish. So i closed google maps and enabled location service and bam 5sec and lock
I tried it with wifi earlier this evening and it jumped around a bit (never had this issue before)

Haven't tried google maps outside yet, but inside i can say it takes forever to get a lock.. even with 3G ON. However, when it does get a lock, accuracy is really bad (>60m).
On GPS status, GPS accuracy is also kinda bad.. I can't get down of 20 m of error (20 m min.. usually it's around 40/60). However, lock times are faster than on goole maps.
Is there a way of improving accuracy?
Being inside and trying to get a better accuracy is not really possible. With 3G on the GPS will use Cell tower triangulation to get A-GPS which is not very accurate indoor.
Use GPS outdoors!
