[DISCUSSION] Battery life with overclocking is epic! - G2 and Desire Z General

Only had the phone for two days so this should improve even more:
overclocking to 1.4ghz, under clocking when screen off to 0.3. 9 hours screen off, didn't lose a percent, still 100 on desire Z. EPIC!

thats good to hear ! Cant wait till i get my hands on it! damnit ! 5 or more days togo

Did you have any other functions enabled? 3G/WiFi? Sync'ing with FB or Twitter apps? Anything like that?

how many hours can you get out of it when you are using it throughout the day, e.g. email, internet browsing, twitter, bit of music and phone calls? using data and wifi?. Im on my 5th day and averaging about 14 hours, hoping that the battery hasnt settled yet, otherwise my hope is for the NAND being hacked and roms for optimal performance!

Do you actually get more real-life performance out of the overclocking (snappier menus, faster app launching), or the only place where it shows is the benchmark? Is Sense faster, or is the difference not visible (0.8 vs 1.4)?
On the other hand, underclocking could be really useful to preserve battery. But doesn't the processor underclock on its own when in standby (by design), do we need to use 3rd party apps?

contrary to what you should expect,
overclocking this SoC just hightens the clock's max roof from 800MHz to 1GHz, 1.2 or 1.4GHz, not the "permamnt" MHz count,
because it auto-fluctuates and adapt depending on usage
AND with the SetCPU app (which I assume JupiterDroid is using),
cycles per second can be optimized even more.
The phone won't go up all over the way to 1.4GHz when idle, but will maintain a very low cycles per second clocks, thus improving battery life

Here's my experience w/ battery life and overclocking the Desire Z (for today).
I only have it set to overclock to 1GHz and I have typical SetCPU profiles to underclock to 245MHz when not in use.
My phone has been off the charger since 9am (5.5 hours) and is sitting at 92% battery power. This includes permanent connection to WiFi (no sleep policy), receiving updates to email/gmail and some text conversations with Trillian and a 15 minute email (composed w/ keyboard).
Compared to my old HTC Hero (Running VR 1.5.0), this is a huge improvement, though with VR 1.5.0 I could run JuiceDefender & have similar battery life with the right profile setup.

Yup I even notice better battery life in actual use. My friends were running youtube and doing web searches like crazy on my phone last night + games for a good 5 straight hours and the battery was holding up well.

I've got to say, the battery life on the Desire Z is outstanding... 18 hours with light use and battery still @ 92%!!!

What about 1GHz core compile?

are you using set CPU and overclock?

Is anybody getting time without a signal percentage in the cell standby item in the battery usage? Im getting 12% sometimes more and im getting about 14 hours battery life with moderate use! I dont feel im getting the best out of the battery and worried this might be part of the issue!

Hi guys.. sorry for the novice post.. i have had my Desire Z for a day and am interested in overclocking it - but
a) are you saying it possibly INCREASES battery life?
b) is the speed diff noticeable in day to day use - or just benchmarks?
c) How do i overclock - what is SetCPU and how does it work?

I don't think my battery has settled yet .. I hope not anyway, and I just (temp) rooted and overclocked to 1Ghz last night, haven't tried higher yet because I feel like my battery is kind of just disappearing so far, none of this epic "all day and then some" stuff some people are reporting. I think it may be that fact that I've been using the device pretty sporadically so far, and it hasn't had a chance to settle.
Also "cell standby" seems to be using a lot of battery, and I'm thinking that's because I'm unfortunately in a spot where I get extremely poor to no coverage most of the day. So I'm thinking the cell radio is using a lot of juice trying to get that 1 bar I sometimes see here. There didn't seem to be a way to easily disable the cell radio without disabling wifi though, until I found this "airplane mode wifi tool" on the market which I just installed.
So now my cell radio GPS and bluetooth are all off while wifi is on, hopefully that will make a difference. I'm wondering if using 802.11n is more draining than 802.11g also I know both my router and the desire z support N but "network info II" reports I'm only connecting at 65Mbps, while my laptop connects at 150Mbps.

I don't think there's any way overclocking can actually increase battery life, but managing CPU speed with SetCPU seems to be more effective than the default behaviour for some reason, so the fact you're overclocking when using it but underclocking when not using it results in longer battery life. I'm pretty sure it does regulate the speed automatically without setCPU but maybe it doesn't clock the CPU down to absolute minimum by default when the screen is off?
Anyway the noob friendly guide to overclocking by JD is on the forum with an [INSTRUCTIONS] tag.. I can't link to it apparently since I'm a noob.
Edit: Added link ~TheRomMistress

Thanks guys. Main thing i'm curious about is whether i just install SetCPU or i have to "root"

Yes, SetCPU needs root access.

Still trying to figure out how the OP is underclocking to .3 using SetCPU.. Lowest I can go is 245..
Unless I'm an idiot and completely missing something.. I'd love to turn this phone way down when the screen right off. As it sits, I'm lucky to get a full day from a fully charged battery.

Your mileage may vary
You can check by yourself and then uninstall if you are not satisfied (or just reboot and changes will dissappear, since we don't have permanent root yet)

Battery

I was wondering how I could extend that battery life on my DINC? Any suggestions and tips would be great.
Ah yes, the battery issue. One I am all too familiar with.
Easy:
For whatever reason our phones charge to 90% and stop there. To correct this, you can either charge while the phone is off or do what we call a bump charge. Bump charging involves charging the phone to "full" while its on (the light should be green) and then turning it off while still plugged in. The light will then change to orange again for 30+ minutes and then green again. You will then Really be fully charged.
Also make sure you have GPS and Bluetooth off when you aren't using them. This will help a ton.
There is an option in Settings - Wireless & networks - mobile networks - called "enable always on mobile data". Unchecking this will drastically help save while the phone is asleep on the 3g network. However, doing this will affect how often you receive updates to chats and sync items when the phone is sleeping. To me it isn't a big deal since if I'm not using the phone why should it be working, but everyone is different!
Finally, a rogue app might be nomming away at your battery. An app from the market called System Panel will monitor how much battery each app is eating. Its free initially but if you want it to monitor over time in the background it does cost. However it is definitely worth it since its a great app and useful for any android owner.
Intermediate (has cost):
Evo batteries fit in our phones! The fit is a little tight but it works just fine. Our stock batteries have 1300mah of capacity which is a bit on the low side. The evo battery has 1500, so it's an hour or so better. You can buy them cheap off ebay (OEM Evo Battery) for around $15.
Conversely, there is the official extended capacity battery for our incredibles with a massive 2150mah. The trade off is that it adds bulk to your phone and costs a lot (around $50). There is the third party seidio battery which adds even more capacity (3500) but adds even more bulk.
Advanced:
Are you rooted? There are kernels out there that are undervolted like Hydra kernel, adrynalyne's undervolted and kingklick's voltage scaling kernel. Everyone has differing experiences with them so there's not a solid "best" so to speak. You can flash these kernels using the clockworkmod recovery. This will all be nonsensical if you're not into the Modding scene.
Also if rooted, you can underclock the processor which, depending on the kernel, can help drastically save battery. You can set profiles to have the cpu work at a minimum speed while the screen is off. Kingklick doesn't advise using setcpu with his kernels and it straight up wont work with hydra's, but it can do wonders on any others.
--
Depending on your activity, you should expect 4-5 hours of 3g awake usage and around 5-6 if you're mostly on wifi using the stock battery. 3g can be a battery drain if you're in an are with inadequate service.
Hope this helps!

turning off gps doesn't matter all that much. GPS isn't called upon unless you have an app using it. I have mine on most of the day (for tasker profiles) and have no issue.
Use WiFi when available, its quicker than 3g and takes less battery.
download setCPU (from xda) and make a profile for screen off max/min = 400/245 or something like that.
i have 'always on data' checked, no issues for me
kernels help a ton, kk#5 is a beast.
I'm running uncommon sense, kk#5 and the above settings. I'm on 20 hours unplugged with 35% less, standard usage. -- not bump charged, charged while on to 100%
isn't the system panel app like a task killer? and from what i've read task killers are pretty pointless with froyo......however i have noticed that my phone is constantly running with about 140mb of ram free, i don't know if this is usual or if something is wrong?? i just got my Dinc so i'm new to all the tweeks and tricks, i do have mine rooted though. i'm not that up on changing roms and kernals though so i'm just trying to find out what all i can do to help my battery without having to buy a bigger one. any help would be greatly appreciated!!
If you are rooted and aren't comfortable with flashing ROMs and kernels, look at setcpu that was mentioned before, and search for instructions to remove the stock apps that always startup on their own in the background. Unless you actually use them, then you can't really do that obviously. I don't have any times on how long it lasted before and how long it last now but I do know its improved. I have mine at a processor clock speed of 500mhz and I don't see much lag time unless I'm really running a lot of things. I'm on WiFi listening to Pandora and I'm not experiencing keyboard lag while typing this.

no...the max it'll run is 1.19 ghz. worst that will happen is a bootloop which can be fixed through nandroid.
Just increment a little at a time. I usually run mine at 1.075 ghz w/ on demand.
screen off profile max/min - 450/245
I use JuiceDefender on my Incredible and believe it or not it really works. It's turns off your data while the phone is on sleep mode so no battery is being drained. I get at least 5 hours extra battery life. You also get other features that come along with it so just give it a try It's free!

Yes system panel CAN be a task killer but I do not suggest using it as such. Instead, it does a great job monitoring how much CPU each app uses so you can take educated action.

1. If you use location based services and have GPS on, it will use the GPS module quite a bit. This is certainly a battery drain.
2. If you dont have any issues with always on mobile data then you must be in an area with good coverage. For me if its left on it drains my battery quite a bit because I'm in a flaky coverage area.
Everyone's phone is different though. Finding what works and what doesn't is the first step to perfection. I just installed the new skyraider sense and my battery life has been ultra fantastic. It works great for me, but I know others dont have that success.

My battery solution

I've had a very sudden and dramatic improvement in battery life and I thought that I'd post what seems to have worked for me.
I installed setCPU and set it for
768/254 on demand - main
245/245 performance screen off
368/368 performance - battery<41%
battery<101% 768/245 on demand
I installed Ultimate JuiceDefender and set it for extreme - blocking all connectivity except for a white-list
I decided that I could do a better job than the auto screen, so I installed Brightness level and I keep it generally at about 20% and then flick it up a bit if I need it.
I disabled auto rotation and now toggle the screen with a widget.
I've taken phone calls, recorded phone calls, checked email a few times, tweeted - very often using wifi which I operate using a toggle widget
I had the phone on charge all night switched off.
Disconnected it at 8.00 this morning and at 6.30 this evening, the JD widget tells me that there is still 12hrs and 28 mins of battery time left.
Considering the size of the screen and what this phone does. And considering the very poor battery life - 8hrs max I was getting before, I am far happier and the phone now becomes a practical item to have.
Whats your percentage battery left?
seems to be saying 72%
I also noticed that for the first time screen usage is less than running usage.
Screen consumption has always been the big factor on phone - and I see that is what people say on the forum, so I'm very pleased to have reduced it so well.
The Brightness level app allows a variable control whereas all the other screen controllers have seen allow you only to rotate through three or four preset brightness levels.
Brightness Level lets you do that with a widget but it also has a slide bar, which is what I was looking for
So basically you've downgraded the DHD to a level of a Nokia S40 device imo As this has been covered by many others in many other battery life related threads I'm just saying this short and simple. Just use the device as it is supposed to, enjoy the awesome features it provides at the full potential and don't get fixated on the battery life, it'll get you through the day no problem (doesn't include playing angry birds for three hours straight ) and just plug it in when you have the chance.
About battery, some tips, my battery life is around 2 days with normal usage of phone, only i dont use 3g only wi-fi:
Brightness - between 25% and 50%
When you on the internet and use native explorer for android go to "Menu-more-settings-enable plugins" and set it to "On demand"
Tupe *#*#4636*#*# - "Phone information" and set "Preffered network type" to "GSM Auto Prl"

your on stock rom mate?
i can see that you can charge your phone while its turnd off..
i think on customized ROM like ARHD LD CORE cm7 and etc cannot charge their phone while its off because iT will BOOTup to recovery mode
Doesn't performance mode just keep the CPU clock on it's maximum? It would rather shorten the battery life than prolong it.
Why buy a smartphone and use it like a landline lol i hammer my phone and still get 10-14 hours out of it, thats fine for me, i only get 3hrs out of my laptop lol

Mate there is something eating your battery if u only get 8 hours battery life.
These adjustments you made are unnecessary if you find the culprit that is eating your battery, why get a phone like the dhd and run it on 20% brightness and lower the cpu to such a level.
Have you used spare parts to check your battery usage?
Im currently on 40% and my phone has been unplugged since 27 hours and I don't even have setcpu installed.
Maybe you should post details on your barret usage!
Swyped from my sexy galaxy tab
But I'm not compromising anything now. I'm completely happy with the way that the phone works for me now.
I'm actually operating the screen at 12% for most of the time - when I am not outside and it doesn't present any difficulty for me.
Obviously I would always like better battery life and I'll look for more ways to improve it.

According to setCPU, if you set it to on demand, it will keep on scanning for required power level. Performance automatically goes to the max. Apparently on demand uses slightly more power so they advice to use performance when possible. So I set the same max/min figure and use a performance governor.
i would actually consider rooting the phone as an alternative, or getting a bigger battery. i have alot of issue with the battery life previously, but after switching rom, it actually help alot
Well it is rooted to enable JD and setcpu to work. But I haven't dared go further because I am still trying to understand the entire process - and also the way back!
I probably will eventually.
I've ordered a 1500 Mugen - and if that actually exists and if it is an improvement on the stock battery then that will advance things as well.
I'm very pleased with the improvement I have achieved so far because at least I'm able to take the thing off the tit for a full working day and use it as a real mobile phone!!

Yup2x, it's true that we can charge it very well while in recovery mode. I was referring to the situation wherein the printer reboots to recovery as soon as you plug in the charger to your DHD. Some users have reported that and they are all using 3.x.x.x.

As far as I've understood, you will always have max frequency when performance is applied. So there is no use setting min value really as it doesn't matter.

[Q] my battery is still draining fast after rooting! help please?

hi guys, i'm a newbie when it comes to rooting and stuff
i reduced all my lcd settings (display is only at 10%, removed animations, etc), turned off unecessary apps (wifi, etc) and i'm using setCPU (so i could downgrade my cpu speed) after i learned how to root here with the ff settings:
cpu range 200-500 mHz, conservative.
my phone still seems to be draining fast. i'm not watching vids or playing games.
can anyone help me or give me tips which overclock actually worked for their S2?
i was hoping my battery would last about a day.
thanks!
Suggestions: restore your cpu settings to normal to establish a base line. Then download Osmonitor and see if any application is hogging your cpu. If not, then, in recovery wipe Dalvik cache (not anything else!).
You don't say what rom you are on but assuming you are not watching video files all day, you should get a full day easily.

Root has nothing to with battery life directly, but you can use T.B Pro to freeze some garbage apps always.
Besides you can't get any benefit from using SetCPU? LOL. Well I don't wanna a debate here, but that damn app will not do any useful thing other than mental satisfaction.
And you stop any app which is set as Automatic refresh in an specified interval, run as low as Widgets possible, Turn Off WiFi and Packet Data when not needed, and try to use Juice Defender which is doing a great job on mine.
Regards.
thank you for the replies
@tangiers: can osmonitor also freeze useless apps? or it just merely monitors your phone?
@jimhaddon: what is an exchange account? i don't think i set-up anything like that while i was tinkering with my phone.

I9100 CPU is smart enough to change it's state when needed, you don't need an additional 2US$ software for that, when will people agree this fact? Anyway, why shall I care!
I'm also in the camp that thinks setcpu is a myth for saving battery. The cpu already scales up and down as needed stock. At idle the cpu sits at 250 mhz.
SetCPU
I found out that setCpu actually drained my battery faster, so just uninstall it.
See if it gets better.
My battery drains too.
Solved that problem by charging overnight.

There are many factors that's can cause battery drain, wakelocks, signal strength, method of data wifi or 3g, display etc etc
You could have a rouge app that is keeping your phone awake, download betterbatterystats and check for partial wakelocks.
Signal strength can be a factor, see your current signal strength and then change the modem to see if this reduces.
No need to tinker with setcpu, you can underclock if you wish but generally leaving it on stock is fine.
Most importantly enjoy the phone don't get to obsessive with trying to save every ounce of battery its a smartphone at the end of the day otherwise we'd be carrying Nokia 3310s with us, and remember you can always charge nightly!

Things that drain the battery :
Gps

Display brightness
Display time up setting
Try to configure them and see how much you can squeeze that .

I underclocked to 800mhz, auto brightness, ICS stock rom with the famous KH3 modem. The phone looses 2% over 8hrs of deep sleep. I think thats awesome. My phone lasts for at least 13hrs. (I charge it overnight and take it out @ 6am and use it till 11pm.)

[ICS] We need your help... Battery life...

Since the beginning of Android one thing has always been an issue with some of the greatest ROMs.
........................Battery life.
Every day lives are drained away by the pleasures and features of such fantastic ROMs... and such things at time seem so hard to bare that we try to change the lives of our battery by going to a different ROM.
So now you have a chance to make a difference, nay, an opportunity to change the lives of many...
This thread is strictly for how to save Battery life. CM9/AOKP have amazing battery life by themselves (but yet can always be made better) But for those on MIUI (Not so great battery life) this will be really useful.
Understand that everyone's device is different and although you may get 15 hours off MIUI/AOKP/CM9 others may only get 4 from them.
Post what it is that helps you achieve maximum Battery life. You may be the one to solve the cure to wowhowdidmybatterylifedroptwentypercentinanhourosis.
Be sure to include:
1. ROM
2. Kernel
3. Tweaks that have been applied through ClockworkMod
4. Apps used to save life
5. What battery you use
6. How long your life lasts
7. Anything else that you think may help

Uhhh,,,on ANY ROM...but not a practical solution.
I think the OP is looking for more practical solutions where they are not disabling major features of the smartphone.

1. CM9, although i think aokp does better.
2. Samurai Kernel, although just about any other ICS kernel should help. The biggest thing that you can change between kernels is the Governor and I/O depending on these two will determine how the CPU runs and in effect will determine battery life. Conservative is just about the best for battery life. If you need slickness and not too worried about battery Ondemand. If you want the best of both worlds i Think Wheatly is a good compromise. Also I/O , Sio is "simple" but VR is flash based so it tends to be the best. Otherwise Noop/Deadline. Also voltage.. undervolting will help limit the amount of well voltage to the CPU. So the lower you can get it the better.
3. Dont have tweaks i apply through CWM but i Run the V6 Supercharger, 3G turbocharger(optional), and the Kick Ass Kernelizer from Zeppelin.
4. I cannot stress this enough, Apps that say they save battery... run... which uses RAM and Resources... meaning its running trying to save you battery, Using battery. Which is stupid... and useless.
5. I have two a 3500Mah and the stock 1.5 year old 1500mah.
6. Typically with 3 hours of display over a period of 15hours (1500 mah) and around 5 hours of display over a period of 22 hours (3500 mah). However this is on wifi, 3g would deduct these a pretty good amount if you have sucky speeds.
He needs to get over it... lol. The only thing that truly saves battery life is managing your connections. There is no magic bullet unfortunately.
PLEASE! Don't tell us to turn off data and never sync the phone. Obviously if you don't use the phone the battery will last forever. I need a phone that can do the following:
Receive emails and texts as they are sent. (I use exchange push)
Last 18 hours on a standard or 1800 mAh battery.
I can just barely make that with stock FC09, I'd love to run ICS but with either CM9 or AOKP I barely make 10 hours.

anyways since this was aimed at miui I get pretty good battery life with it... (3.5 hours screen on time) nyan v5 ftw! No special features... uv a lot (won't list my settings cuz every phone is different) and no oc... used to use jd but, it saves more battery if you just switch things off manually... really though until I flashed nyan my battery life was atrocious, but now just about on par with the peoples rom (4.5 to 5 hours screen on time!) Oh yeah, all this with the stock battery...

On aokp with 1800 mAh i can do about 3Hours of screen on time and 15 Hours of battery life and my phone was awake 75% of the time.
Screenie was at 15%

Oh my good golly gosh.
I just realized the best battery life I ever got was on DK28.
So take that. Let's go Frankenstein.
1. CM9 KANG June 02 build.
2. Stock
3. Services for V6 and Search Key Remap
4. Ha!
5. Stock. Came with device...need new one.
6. Depends on use. But I usually get the estimated six hours consistently.
7. If you're going to use a task killer just use the built in one. Overclocking is bad, and in my experience so is undervolting. GTalk, official Facebook application(especially this. Even with notifications off it still is always going), G+, and more are always running and are a drain. No live wallpapers, and no widgets that require constant updating. As much black as possible. Don't use third-party batteries. Obviously turning off 3G, 4G, sync, and such will dramatically increase your battery life.
WAIT! Why am I writing this? There is a freaking optimization guide. Why does this exist? For ****s sake.
Running AOKP build 36, stock, FC09 modem 15 hours running takes me down to 50% batt hour of screen time, constant crappy wifi connection in an area with crappy cell signal sync for everything but email and g chat is every 2 hours (weather and all that). Big thing to save batt for me was turning down my screen brightness. I was also getting crappy battery life till i let this rom install run the battery down to 5% twice.

By no means was I saying never enable your 3g/4g.. but the fact remains that the single best way to conserve your battery life is to be smart about managing your connections. I.e. not leaving it on ALL day and to only turn sync on when your actually checking your e-mail.. be that through an app like juice defender or manually toggling. If that's not more helpful than what you posted (UV a lot and don't overclock??? Duh.) than my bad bro!

-THIS +9000! An app that spends all of it's time stopping other apps is wasting just as much "battery." I maintain, Advanced Task Killer, with NO, I repeat NO AUTOKILL. Set a widget on your home page, tap it occasionally to make sure everything is closed. Same effect as the built in task manager, but one single convenient tap.

Firstly, I'm not trying to get into a pissing match with you. Its pointless. Secondly, the op makes no mention whatsoever of connection status. Thirdly, while you might get decent battery life w/o doing it.. I guarantee you'd do better if you did. Straight facts.

1. CM9
2.ShadowKernel (I find nyan colonel to be a little more draining) SIO, conservative
3. None
4.System Tuner Pro configured to UV, under clock to 400mhz on screen off, to close apps that don't automatically restart themselves, configure "auto-kill" so its not as aggressive with killing apps that just stay on, and a few sysctrl edits that I honestly don't think make a difference.
5.stock epic 1500 mAh, my sprint store wouldn't give me an sgsII battery
6. 12-18 hrs depending on use, though it has definitely drained quicker
7.be easy on data! (There kennyG) turn off wifi when your not near your networks, turn off mobile data, Bluetooth, and autosync when your not needing it. (Unless you absolutely need PUSH email for your job or whatever though honestly as far as my job goes if its important enough for me to need the message immediately they will simply dial my phone number. Yeah I'm old fashioned.
- Cm9
- Shadow kernel
- No tweaks
-1800 D710 battery
- I get 15-20 hours depending on how much music I stream during the day.
- I got the biggest boost by using the profiles in CM9 to optimize my connections and syncing depending on where I'm at during the day. I have Wifi at work and home, so I have it toggle my data off during that time period and vice versa when I'm mobile.

Using AOKP with shadow kernel.
Best thing I did to help with battery life was to turn off all notification options in the FB app. And I set haxsync to download photos only when plugged in.

Ultimate Battery saving solution Thread!

Hello guys,
I have been researching, experimenting and trying many many things to understand how cell phone battery consumption works and how to find the solution to be able to use the most of the battery! HTC did a very bad job on the battery side of M9 and in my opinion, Battery is the only downside of M9. I will explain later why I say that.
I will share the tips and tricks I found to get such battery life that none of you ever think of getting out of M9. Look at below battery stat. It looks like M8 battery stat which made all M8 user really happy with their device! Now we will be enjoying that too! BTW This is my birthday today, so its a very good day for me to post this thread. Wish me luck!
First Let me explain some things about why a phone drain the battery in relation with CPU and Apps.
1. Random CPU freq change.
2. CPU heat.
3. When phone is idle, means you are not doing anything(not opening apps or neither you have apps opened in background, CPU freq not being able to stay down.
4. GPU related drains(while playing games or not)
5. Display category. Amoled or LCD or what type.
6. Buggy ROM keeping wake locks. ( I am not going to talk about wake locks at all. There are good enough threads for this)
7. Apps. Each you open and close an app, the cpu starts working, freq goes high. So, this means, the less opening and closing you can do the less battery you consume. Now, all these concepts of app killer running in background, killing apps after a certain interval, ARE COMPLETELY WASTE OF BATTERY AND NOTHING ELSE! Android keeps opening apps in background according to its algorithm. So, if you want those app to stop bugging you in the background, then task killers are NOT ANY USE AT ALL! Remember! The less app in background the less drain you will get. We usually use home button a lot when coming to home screen but we dont realize the app just got minimized and consuming as much as battery as it would if it was open in the foreground. So result is, bad standby time + more drain while screen is on.
So how can you get rid of those background apps? Best way is to use Greenify. Greenify is the only app that can hibernate any app without hogging battery by itself and keeping wake locks. How to find which apps to put under auto hibernation list? You need 2/3 days to observe. Greenify will automatically mark those apps which opens in background. Once you are with good number of apps, greenify all of them. In greenify settings, select autohibernation so that even if some gets awake by the app, can be put to sleep again. Now two things will hapen because of this.
1. You will consume MUCH LESS CPU power means you will save battery. The device will be very snappy. Ram will be at least 1.3 gb free.
2. It will take more time for an app to open which are under your hibernation list. Now I have thought about it. My conclusion is that, I need to choose between battery and super fast device. When I on battery saving priority I follow the solutions of this threads and when I am not worried about the battery I try to enjoy the device.
So, we can restrict apps from hogging with greenify. Now how to control the CPU?
Out CPU is actually ULTRA FAST and is capable of fastest performance amongst all smart phone around. Here is the antutu benchmark to show how crazy this CPU can be! So crazy CPU will drain battery. Its cor-relational. So, the solution is to limit the CPU from putting too much power, especially when it gives more than the phone and user needs. When I was using HTC Sensation, I was feeling like, there are 2/3 things which should be better and I demand nothing more from a phone. LIke battery, camera, ram etc. But after M7 I have never felt that the phone should get faster and we should get like 4 gb of ram either~! But newer means faster and better. So CPU + GPU are getting more powerful and eventually the phone is getting such overrated power which it doesnt even need! After all we are not flying to moon with our phones! lol!~ Right?
ok Now how to limit the CPU?
We need
1. Elemental x kernel 4.01 installed with all stock configuration. This is important. Yout must use STOCK values. I have seen anything else other than STOCK values drain the battery even more! So STOCK IS BEST!
2. Elemental x kernel app or Kernel adiutor kernel config app to tune the kernel for our battery saving mode.
Steps-
- Set HTC pnp manager off
- Set max cpu freq of small cluster to 864 mhz, min cpu freq to 384
-Make sure you are on stock gov.
- Set GPU max to 320 GHZ.
-Flash this zip by @ivicask Battery tweaked php zip

Disclaimer: These settings will make the phone performance slower but not laggy. So, just consider a power saver package which has very decent speed too!
After applying these settings, you better restart your device to let settle it with new rules for CPU. leave the phone for 2/3 mins. The things that you will notice when you turn on the display -
1. No rapid CPU freq changes
2. Phone is ultra cool as the temp of CPU and battery has gone down to 35 C. M9 with default setting will never come down to 35 c ever! The lower temp would be 40 c. So, cooling the cpu will minimize mA consumption.
3. when you open any heavy app like fb or chrome you will see the consumption mA rate is almost half of what it is with default settings. Max rate of discharge was 700 mA for me with 50% brightness + 3g internet + FB/chrome/youtube.
4. When you leave your phone to sleep, here is the fun! I have never seen such low mA discharge rate on M9 and I didnt even expect! It goes as low as 40 mA! Insane! The avg screen of discharge rate I found was 70 mA which means on full charge our M9 will get 40 hours standby! And that is with internet on.
5. If you are charging with official m9 charger, you will see the charging rate is 850/+- mA while your display is on with internet. When screen off it will reach mac to 1340 mA. My phone previously was charging at 600 mA with screen off. So, now 0 to full charge is only in 2 hours.
6. Clash of Clans used to drain 1200 mA and now it drains only 550-600 mA.

Instead of turning PNPMGR off, have a look at this first. http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/mod-htc-one-m9-enhanced-thermal-t3369574
It's a pretty indepth thread on the pros and cons of PNPMGR, and also custom thermal configuration files that change clock speeds of your CPU, dependent on your usage.
Also, your Antutu benchmark picture isn't anywhere to be found.
What about CPU boost? Do you disable it?

I never was more diaappointed with any another of my phone and heating and poor batt life like on m9...
After one hour of browsing internet I'm over 50% down.. on stock mm. That's shame for HTC. Now I'm back on my 2yrs old s5 with still perfect battery life..
I don't get any overheating on my m9 at all. It's on stock marshmallow still. Bought it used a couple weeks ago.

Hi,
If you did an OTA update to MM and are losing that much battery in just an hour of heavy use, then I would back up everything and do a factory reset. I can go for 5 hours of very heavy power user performance before dropping to that level. Either that, or you have a malware app on the phone that is being used in the background. Which a factory reset will also solve.( except in rare cases, requiring a firmware reflash)
