[Q] Starting Fresh - Droid X General

Hi everyone!
I've had my X for about a month now and finally have some time to really play with it. You know, themes and such. But I have a bunch of stuff installed and want to start fresh for all this work.
I guess this is a bit like that itch when working with Windows that you want to reinstall every few months and start from scratch. I'm used to it for the PC, but this is the first time with a real smart phone, so I'm a bit lost.
What I'm looking for is maybe a step by step how to return to 'just out of box' stock, like after activation but before any real use. This way I can get a fresh Nandroid backup of that state in case anything goes to hell.
What would be the best way to accomplish this? Flashing the SBF and formatting the SDcard or wiping everything using the system options? I really haven't seen anyone describe this, so maybe this would help others by getting the steps written up.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Dan

yes man use the sbf and flash back and you can reformat ur sdcard to wipe everything. but why do you want to wipe everything?? if you need help send me a PM and i'll give u some links!

I think you want a factory reset, settings, privacy, factory reset. Be sure you sync your data with gmail in the accounts section of settings
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

Want a real refresh? Next time back it up. This phone is pretty much a computer. Make an image of your hard drive, before you do things to it.
Won't have to rely on SBF's, after that.

EVO reboots at least 10x a day

the only thing I have on my phone is Fresh 3.4.01 nothing else and it reboots at will, like a 50% boot, ie: screen remains and phone appears to reboot, but its not liek when you turn it on........seems to be happening more and more...
If I do a factory restore will I lose all my contacts ??
what do you guys think ? thanks
Did u do a complete wipe before u flashed the rom??? sounds like u didnt....
You can export your contacts to your SD card for a hard copy, and your contacts are synced with your Google account. Google.com/contacts.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Login to your Google account and see if your contacts are backed up. If not do what someone said and export to your card. Wipe and see if you still have an issue if so try a different rom.
thanks for the replys
I bought the phone new,had the last fresh on it, was only 4-5 weeks ago ?
So i`m using it for a few days works great right, then i get into the phone and see what its running, and google it and see there`s an update available, so i contacted the guy i bought it from and he says no problem do the update if you want...
So i downloaded the file, plugged in my phone to the computer put the file where it told me to, rebooted phone pressing the volume down was it ? and followed the instructions....
So basically it did an update WITHOUT wiping the phone..... truthfully i did`nt have it long enough to know if it was rebooting before i did the update so i`m not sure if its the phone or the software...
These phone are so darn cool i love it to no end, and just want it to work 110% like the rest of yours.
I am an IT consultant and could use a good remote desktop app as well, any recommendations ? as all the ones I have downloaded so far have asked for full access to my phones every move ! whats up with that ??!!!
hey thanks in advance all here you guys rock

If someone else rooted your phone there are a few things you need to do. You need to make sure you have Amon_ra recovery installed and you need to to a nand backup with Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax keys. You also need to do a full wipe when installing a new rom wipe cash and dalvik I do it two times. Than install the new rom, keep in mind you will loose everything and always do a nand backup before installing the new rom. Now if your going from a 3.1 to a 3.2 rom update a wipe is not always needed but a nand backup is incase you need to go back. Hope this helps.
If you know how to root or are capable of following instructions to the end, I say unroot and try to use it like that. If the problem persists, take it in for service. My phone started rebooting randomly because the processor was overheating. I troubleshooted by replacing the battery, changing ROM, unroot, take it in. The phone got to the point where any data intensive app would make it turn off (maps, navigation, YouTube).
might wanna check out this thread. hope this helps

About to give phone to son as a chew toy!

Here's my problem before it becomes a chew toy,, Im currently running CYANOGENMOD-6.1.2,,I dont know if this is what you have to deal with when rooted,, ill set my phone down through the night and when i get ready to start my day i have to reboot everytime just to use it! ITS GETTING ANNOYING!!,, The internet wont work, The market wont load and if im lucky i might be able to download an app,, Some of my widgets say "problem loading" I have to trash them and reload,, Some apps tend to force close,, And also the delay after turn on the screen is bout 2sec or so..

I would say to do a full wipe (cache, dalvik cache, data, and reset to factory setting) and reflash the rom & kernel combo of your choice. Also update your radios to the latest and then update your profile under menu\settings\system updates. This should get the phone up and running better and stop the need for constant reboots. As for the widgets saying "problem loading", I get that as well and I think it is due to moving the widgets in question to your sd card. If you put them back on the internal memory of the phone that shouldnt happen anymore. If you are worried about taking up to much internal memory with widgets just set up the aps2sd and you will be able to put more of your apps on the partioned portion of your sd card and save more internal memory. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps. I would like to save your EVO and not make it a chew toy for anyone!
I agree with adam, try a complete wipe, even flash calkulin's format all.zip (search for it) and flash the latest radios and re flash cyanogen. You'd be amazed at what horrors can come from not wiping the dalvik and cache. Speaking of which, try out amon ra recovery if you already haven't.
Sent from my hand.
I agree with Adam1422. It sounds like you need to do a full wipe and clean install. Do not use Titanium/Launcher/ADW/anyotherprogram backups. Save files like pictures, music, documents off your SD and format the card. Do not reuse settings or data from programs. Go into it like you just bought the phone. That will probably clear up all of your issues.
Are u using any custom kernels. Could be a more have or less have issue

Not if you do your due diligence, read up on how to do it and then perform the steps carefully without rushing. We were all n00bs once, my friend. Sure there's some tension when rooting for the first time, but there's one hell of a rush when it works. You'll be fine.

Not that I can think of, man. Good luck. Come back if you need help.
you are in the right forum to fix your phone...
it is not the phone.. but I agree with others.. you need a fresh setup done.
or even try a different ROM...
the hard part has been done for you.. ROOTing...
you need to go learn about the ROM you like... and how to install it.
learn about: wipe, recovery, nandroid backup, ROM, ...
this needs to be learned anyways for your life with EVO, because you wanted it rooted.
ps.. to fix this.. you are going to loose all your data and put your phone almost back to stock form. dont worry.. contacts and calendar should be backed up to google if you told evo to do so.

Where can i direction to do the procedure?? whats the first step??
here is a good place to start reading:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html
I would like for you to try a new ROM... that is Sense ... so that you are able to use it more to what the EVO was.
this ROM is stable and has everything working:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793471
once you have done one Flashing of a ROM.. and working..
you can easily do others as you find interest in them.
more side reading for afterwards:
there is the rooting procedure that I used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
since you are already rooted.. this not needed.
but you should read the first page.. for your knowledge
here is the main forum for evo on xda.. for development. lots for you to research on new things for evo:

Definitely make sure before you go flashing ROMs and stuff you do a nandroid backup.
Step-by-step instructions for how to do this, plus flash ROMs and stuff, can be found here:
http://htcevorooting.x10.mx/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Ask your friend what method he used to root your phone, plus check which recovery manager you're using (reboot your phone into recovery, it should say which manager it is. If you're still running CyanogenMod there should be an option to do this if you choose reboot instead of shutdown when holding the power button.)

[REQ] Nandroid backup request (offering cash)

Just wondering if anyone who's flashing and rooting could please do a backup and upload it somewhere. Myself and a couple others have accidentally partitioned our internal SD incorrectly causing a catastrophic touch screen issue.
I'm hoping it'll have the properly partitioned SD storage because I'm having difficulty doing it manually. If someone could upload this it'd be hugely appreciated!!!
BUMP!!!
Can anyone please provide me with a Nandroid backup using Tenfar's recovery??? I can throw some money once I get my Paypal sorted out. I'm desperate, fellas!
Can someone please help? I'd like to try anything I can to get my phone working this weekend. It's been an entire week without my Atrix.

Im relatively new to android...is this backup you are speaking about a TB backup. Or what method of backup are you looking for?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
You actually need to be rooted and have Tenfar's custom Recovery menu. In there it has an option to do a Backup.
If you're new it may be too engaging but I appreciate the offer nonetheless. If you could help, it'd be great. If it's too much trouble, I thank you anyway!
yeah what does the nandroid backup...back.. up? the apps?
What I'm HOPING and PRAYING for is that it'll also copy something in the internal SD which was partitioned due to my stupidity. dev/block/mmcblk0p18 is what that is in particular.
I tried manually formatting and partitioning it but I'm unable to do so. Fastboot freezes and Early USB Enumeration goes by so quickly I can't run the commands that I need through ADB. And I don't even know if that'll work because I made a script that executes the commands and I get weird errors. I'm far from an expert and monkeyed around too deeply where I shouldn't have.
About 4-5 others are reporting the same problem. The ****ty thing is that I'm in Canada and it'd be a huge pain to send it to Motorola. They're giving me a lot of grief and I've had to put up a big fight. Waiting to see if they'll send an RMA because I may need to send it in. When I get it back I might sell it and buy a Bell Atrix because I live in Canada and if something bad happens, it'll be easier to send to Bell or Motorola Canada.
from what i understand you have to have an unlocked bootloader to backup or restore using a nandroid backub
Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology then.. just need a backup from Tenfar's customer Recovery. I don't even know if it'll work but I'm out of ideas.
I'm at least thankful that the Xperia X10's bootloader was cracked. I forgot to send a replacement back to Rogers and I phoned them asking if I could use it for now. They thankfully said yes because they forgot to charge me for it lol... it's got some really great ROMs, but looking at this beautiful, mangled Atrix makes baby Jesus cry!
i can do that but im wondering why you dont try SBF file?? should work better than Backup

i was just wondering the same thing... it also be more stable as nandroid restore are not so good on some phones and im guessing especially on a locked bootloader one.
also a nandroid backup would also restore some else's settings and information on your device....

I've already tried the SBF files but it doesn't do anything to the internal SD. I need an actual backup because the user settings are exactly what I'm looking for. Normally you'd want a fresh flash from stock but I hope you now understand why I'm asking this constantly.
Flashing to stock was naturally my first step. Unfortunately it had failed. About 5 others reporting the same problem.

What maybe you could do is? go into tenfars cwm recovery go to mounts and storage and format the internal sdcard and system and boot and data. This is safe as far as I know and me and tenfar have both done this.I literally formatted every single thing in the option menu. just to see if I could do it. Which was stupid but I was curious and used to do that before I installed new roms on my old backflip all the time! Also might wanna do a factory reset through cwm and clear dalvik cahe as well for good measure. Now after you format all that. reboot system which will send you in a boot loop/wont boot past first screen. Pull the battery and unplug usb cable from charger. Then reboot and enter rsdlite mode by holding volume up and the power button. Now just flash your 4.1.26 sbf file through rsdlite 5.0
As long as you flash back to retail 4.1.26 afterwords using rsdlite 5.0 that should put everything right! As I have done this and my phone is working normal.
I better put one of them warnings here though anyway lol

I was not aware of this and was so focused on correcting the challenge that this was a complete oversight. On second thought, I don't want to compromise anyone's security.
I had in mind a fresh backup, preferably for AT&T's 1.2.6 SBF but it's a bit of trouble and a lot of space. I retract my request due to the amount of work involved and that I don't want to compromise anyone's security in case they don't clear their user details, etc.
Thanks for pointing that out, knigitz. I think ADB access in the Recovery is our best bet. Crossing my fingers.

Need help with my GS4!

Hey guys,
I'm new to this site and actually sort of new to androids so sorry if I mess something up here. I had my gs4 rooted and had titanium backup pro installed, I was removing bloatware and trying to dodge what I thought were system files and just get the widgets and uneeded stuff out. Apparently I messed something up to where my gallery stopped working. After reading I tried everything to get it to work and figured since it was a new phone i would just do a factory reset. I did this in both ways under settings and hard reset. Both times during the phones setup process I got errors saying that the text-to-speech, gallery, and setting all stopped working so I get all the way to the last step in setup process and it gives me the settings error and takes me back a step to where I can't even use my phone now. I've tried installing cwm manually to try and flash a new rom but Im not sure if im doing it right. Any help would greatly be appreciated..

Use Odin to flash back to stock and when you root again use freeze instead of deleting stuff so you can defrost incase you freeze something you actually need.
sent from xda app
Using the search function would get you the answers you need. Not only will it help you figure things out, but it is also the rules.
Because you are new, I will point you in the right direction. Go to the Development section and read the "Factory Stock" ODIN thread. It will have all the information and downloads you need to get back to stock. If you read the thread, you shouldn't have any more questions. Make sure you do a factory reset after you ODIN to stock so it clears any remaining rogue data. When you are done, I suggest you do as much reading as you can before you do anything else to your phone. Read for weeks if you need to. If you have any more questions, try the search function to try to find the answers before you post. Good luck.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261573
If you'e not AT&T look on sammobile for your firmware... anyways... you may be able to get it rooted and unfreeze everything, then reset, and not have to flash back to stock....
People, people people....ALWAYS FREEZE first, then if you know what your doing delete. leads to nothing but f/c if you make a mistake, but its easy to un-freeze, than having to odin back to stock.

[Q] Lost Data and Need help in getting it back

Hello Guyzz,
I need big help !
I accidentally made my Nexus 4 to factory restore and lost complete data.
Now I need to get back my complete data, mainly Apps data (which had personal notes), gallery (ahh memories), text messages and wats app.
I have synced google account for contacts and apps, but not for pics (google+).
After a day of researching blogs what I found was,
If we route mobile and install some apps like DiskDigger and run scan, there a possibility of getting back data.. Is this true ?? -- If so after routing will I get official google android updates as before ?? if not can I go back to stock after routing and recovering data through app and get regular official google android updates as before ??
If not.. Is there any way to get back lost data ??--- if so pls guide me !

I honestly do not know if that app will work to recover wiped data.
Lets suppose you unlock/root the phone and flash a "custom" recovery in order to try the DiskDigger app and it miraculously works
Afterwards, you will still receive your Google OTA update notifications like always.
You would however need to flash back to the "Stock" recovery in order to successfully install the OTA update.
You will also lose root access if you install a Google OTA update.
Keep in mind also, you can always re-lock and/or restore your phone back to it's factory original state after trying that app.
There are many tutorials here on XDA.
Search, read, learn and then if you still need help, post, and many good people will try to help you.

If your device is not unlocked, unlocking to root it will wipe the device. That'll wipe your data once again. However, afaik, there is not going to be a way to recover your deleted files.

I do agree and I did mentioned it would be miraculous if that app recovered wiped data.
As @ jd1639 rightly points out, unlocking will wipe your data partition once again,
making it even more unlikely the app would recover any data.
It still might be worth the effort learn to unlock/root and flash custom recovery on your device.
Then it is possible to make periodic nandroid backups of you ROM and/or use Titanium Backup-root to backup apps&data.
Also good to know how to transfer those backups and photos etc. over to your PC using usb
so in the event of an other inadvertent wipe, you wont lose everything.
