Google is your best friend. Also you might check the stickies in the main android theme forum. Metamorph will be a good starting place I think.

Getting started

Hey all,
I was wondering if you folks could point me in the direction of where to go to learn how to start coding Android?
I consider myself pretty smart when it comes to techie stuff, but programming was never a direction I took.
Now that I am back in school I would like to take some classes to get into this. Any suggestions of the right direction to go to get started? My goal is to start writing apps and maybe have my own custom Rom you all can critique thx

We have no idea why either.. because you didn't give us any information other than 'I'm having a problem.' We're not mind readers.

New vibrant directory

Im thinking about starting a new thread in development section. With every ROM KERNEL and MODEM. All always up to date. Im on xda everyday, so wouldnt be hard. I will update everyday when I get home from work. And try to make it well organized. Does anyone support this? Or should I not?

I wish you would do this in the Wiki instead. And by doing that you could also get help because anyone could update the wiki. I tried but it takes alot of effort and time is limited.

Yes, the "WIKI" right below the xdadevelopers logo in the upper left hand corner of this webpage. It's there I promise. Check it out it is pretty cool.
I too would like what you suggest.
Yeah I would love to see an updated directory. Wiki is cool, too.

[Q] How can i port an existing rom?

How can i port an existing rom?
That's a very broad question..what device was this originally from? what version/flavor of android is this? Etc.

Yeah Nicgraner is right. We need more info to help. Some phones port well to others with little difficulty. Others, not so much.
Google "dsixda rom kitchen"
What you learn may be helpful.

Well first thank you guys a lot for getting interested in helping me. i know a little bit in basics like rooting and flashing roms but i wanted to know more about how can i make my own rom or at least try to troubleshoot any cooked rom.
Get familiar with logcat, to begin with.
Get familiar with smali/baksmali, decompiling and recompiling Java apps, and Java code for Android in general.
It'll get you half way there.
