Samfirmware is NOT Samsung. Not to mention they said they think (so it's just a guess) December or January. There is no proof here. Anyone's guess is as good as this one.
Actually.. I Think It Makes Sense...

And We Should Get It Within 3rd Week Of Nov. Through 2nd Week Of December

Samsung’s full press release is as follows:
Samsung GALAXY S Offers New Android 2.2 Upgrade
New platform upgrade provides enhanced experience on the go
SEOUL, Korea – October 18, 2010 – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced the Android™ 2.2 (Froyo) upgrade to the Samsung GALAXY S, giving users access to new features, enhanced navigation applications and improved performance.
The Android 2.2 upgrade will be available via Kies, Samsung’s unique in-house software upgrade program. Kies can be downloaded at the Samsung mobile website (http://www.samsungmobile.com).
The GALAXY S is Samsung’s cleverly designed smartphone with a bright 4-inch SUPER AMOLED screen and a 1 GHz application processor, giving users an intelligent, immersive and integrated mobile experience. The Android 2.2 upgrade offers voice-controlled GPS through Google MapsTM with Navigation, faster performance by JIT(Just in Time) compiler. Additionally, further functionalities including Search in-browser, Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1, improved customization options will be provided with OS upgrade.
- Google MapsTM with Navigation: GPS navigation system with voice guidance
- Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1: Allow the web browser to make full use of the whole web
- Setup Wizard: Quickly customize the GALAXY S and access networks with ease
- Home Screen/Menu Preview and Edit : Preview by pinch-zoom
- Search in-Browser : Google™, Translate, Wikipedia, Dictionary
The Android 2.2 upgrade will be available from the mid of October 2010 in the Nordic region and gradually rolled out to other European markets, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, North America, Africa and rest of the world.
From the samsungmobileus Twitter in reply to a question about Froyo on Vibrant:
@Dirksmoothe we are working on Android 2.2 for the current Galaxy S phones. It will be available this year.
They will probably deliver on that date, although it might be a situation like December 31st is when the first OTA's roll out, with everyone else getting the update by January 31st. But that's good enough for us because it will be on XDA before too long after the first OTA's rolled out.
Moved to General as not development
I want froyo as much as the next guy but honestly I can wait patiently. This phone runs flawlessly as is. The only real benefit would be a couple apps, flash which will be nice but I probably won't use very often. Not to mention the performance increase but I'm completely content with where I'm at now.

Be aware that even for "North America," Samsung may be referring to the variants of the international I9000 that are sold in Canada. That is still close to the "Galaxy S" phones sold in Europe, and not so close to the U.S. carriers' modified phones.
The U.S. carriers have a lot of their own notions about their branded products. Both the hardware and firmware of the AT&T Captivate and T-Mobile Sprint are different from the Samsung I9000 reference model in at least some ways. (The Verizon Fascinate and Sprint Epic 4G are even further away in design, with their CDMA radios and differerent chipsets, including the GPS chip.)
In summary, all "Galaxy S" phones are not the same. There is much misleading information floating around about the international Galaxy S platform, from which naive observers erroneously generalize and derive predictions about the U.S. market.

What do you think will happen first, Froyo on the Vibrant, or a real root for the G2? Frankly, I don't know why you'd want to swap when there are already great ROMs out for the Vibrant and it's about to get much much better. G2 development is pretty stagnant right now while they wait for a permanent root solution.

Unless some genius decides to fry the chip that prevents root with a soldering iron to deactivate it, my vote is on the vibrant getting froyo.
Who cares about Froyo release??? It will come to your phone via OTA at some point, and there will be a plethora posts "OTA bricked my phone" - once you go custom, you would never look at the OTA/stock. There might be a bit of a delay getting a custom ROM after the OTA started rolling out, but the quality of work put into the custom ROM's by the devs here - do not forget to donate to keep the development fluent - exceeds OTA by several miles.
For all I care, my phone runs as smooth as butter now on a custom Eclair ROM, I don't think Froyo will be a great improvement, stock OTA Froyo that is.
P.S. Go ahead get that G2, and join the army of loosen hinges and constant reboots whenever your coverage degrades.

This phone doesn't run flawlessly. Try hard to delude yourself, but even looking at it from the perspective of "it's an opinion," it sounds silly at best.
While FroYo may not have features that you crave, it does for many other users. Many of those features actually will help the phone approach "flawlessness," which it has continuously failed (quite convincingly) to achieve thus far.

What do I gain out of deluding myself? I have literally never been upset, frustrated, or anything less than completely satisfied with the performance of this phone. Judging by what I see around here, your mileage may vary but I cannot comment on that and you most certainly cannot comment on my experience.
Let's just say this, if your Vibrant is performing slower than mine then I could understand, but if your Vibrant and mine actually do perform the same then I am unsure of what you are in search of.
GOOD NEWS! for Galaxy S owners, the Gingerbread man will be coming to Samsung Most popular smartphone (Galaxy S) Flag-ship.
Remeber, Earlier this Month, Samsung Mobile India Twitter feed tells the fact that the mobile will get Android 2.3 (Screenshot below), The company kept it short and simple with a brief tweet: "Yes we will get gingerbeard on GalaxyS." but no other info announced from the company about the update. As we know Samsung has released the Froyo to All users on Many worldwide Carriers on 11,November 2010 and All of them is Now enjoying Froyo and Waiting to taste the Gingerbread.
Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard. Leaked ROMs and Videos may start rolling-out on January so Stay tuned, Enjoy your Froyo... Gingerbread is coming on the way to Make "YouMobile".
Gingerbread brings with it an improved user interface which is slicker and more streamlined, along with better power management. It also boasts one-touch word selection and copy/paste, support for multiple cameras and goodies such as NFC (Near Field Communications).

This is a joke for sure.
My S has Eclair, till this time there is no official froyo upgrade available for my phone and samsung is going to release gingerbread the coming February?
Are we talking about Samsung or about the comedy channel?

This is the difference between porting (having to program the drivers for about everything) and having a native release (like HTC on N1).
Now that NexusS is in the hands of Google, we can expect faster release!

Froyo has been out since October/early November, officially released by Samsung. Blame your carrier if your not getting the update. Contrary to belief, Samsung is quicker than HTC when pushing out updates, it's just that HTC devices have a much larger userbase on XDA, hence the quicker porting/updating.
2.2.1 has been out officially since September as well on N1,

N1 is the base on wich they developped the update, don't you think it's normal it gets prior updates?
It is also pretty usual that all the "clones" of N1 will get theses updates pretty fast, since HTC only have to put their bloatware on it and it's pretty much done!
Thanks! Hope this is true.

Both of these are hardware dependant and both the Galaxy S doesn't have. The multiple camera support is for using with taking 3D pictures and/or recording 3D movies. And NFC is there so that android devices can attempt to get ahead of the iphone5 which is said to support it but these needs a dedicated chip.

Google can not give the gingerbread code out to companies until it has been officially released.
Meaning no company will have any advantage in the race for gingerbread.

I have had one problem with this phone since purchase in September. You need to try a custom rom with a kernel upgrade, not like there is any lag in stock JPU.
I don't get how so many people complain about this great device when it can be pimped out within 30 minutes.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Some Galaxy still don't have an official Froyo update yet. And the ones that do are still laggy. The 2.2.1 is finally a ROM that isn't laggy but its not official its a leak.
If Samsung comes out with Gingerbread they will screw it up. I'd rather have the community come up with a basic Gingerbread that works. And the community will do it long before Samsung does.
dude this is samsung, we all saw what happened with froyo and all the delays.
I have little hope for a febuary release, i say it's closer to june
2.2.1 is a revelation. I have put it on my galaxy s and its no longer laggy, really smooth, new market, lock screen wallpapers etc. Finally its transformed the phone into the powerhouse it always had the potential to be. I urge you all to get 2.2.1 ASAP!
After no rom leaks in the past few weeks after JPY I am starting to wonder will Samsung update our phones to gingerbread or leave us behind when Galaxy S 2 phone is announced next Month. I know gingerbread was just announced but usually roms leak out from Samsung regularly most probably so they can beta test
but no new roms is giving me bad vibes
i was thinking the same thing.. only new roms coming out (leaks) are 2.2 not even 2.2.1 ... i would think if they were working on gingerbread we should have seen a leaked rom by now. i have a feeling they are dumping for newer phones.
We wont get Ginger bread if we where samsung would have announced it by now to sell more phones
We will get it.
SGS will get Gingerbread ... Comfirmed by Samsung Mobile India on Twitter Account.
I do remember reading somewhere that Samsung claimed we'd be getting Gingerbread via twitter, if that's anything to go by... Q1 2011 was the 'expected' arrival for it too though I thought? :S like gingerbread isn't just a revision, such as 2.2 –> 2.2.1, its a whole buildbuild upgrade which may require more effort than expected (even supercurio and the cm team haven't made any significant galaxy s gingerbread improvements lately besides their initial work).

It Samsung wants to stay in this fight ... than they have to...It make no sense to release Galaxy S 2 and not providing 2.3 to 10 milions SGS Owner .... That would be wrong decision from my point of view...
i dont think, ppl will simply move to SGS2 for the sake of 2.3
seems likely to get 2.3 at this point, but it will take some time - they might also have killed some "leakers", we didn't get newer 2.2.1 builds either..
I don't care much for gingerbread i just want now a perfect 2.2.1 rom from samsung with no lag and gps like JM9.
I got the feeling we will , 10 million sold. Would be bad for their name not releasing. But also , i wouldnt be suprised if they dont release it.

Samsung has told Pocket-lint that it is unsure whether the latest version of Android, version 2.3, will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S, following the announcement that its new flagship phone, the Samsung Nexus S, will be packing the new operating system when it launches later this month.
Rather than simply telling us whether it is or it isn’t, Samsung has told us:
“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).
"Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors”.

to me that means if we bring a better phone out called galaxy s2 we will not update the galaxy s because the new phone will all ready have the update installed so we can rip more people off
just found this online and it doesnt look good......... JK Shin, president of Samsung Mobile, has now gone on record saying that we'll get a new Galaxy S device at Mobile World Congress in February that'll feature Gingerbread, a dual-core processor
I _would_ be upset if there was no update after the initial Froyo - knowing that a lot better is available. Especially knowiing it would affect 10 million customers.
2.2.1 or 2.3 would not matter too much. It doesn't seem 2.3 offers a lot compared to 2.2. And perhaps the ext4-basedness of the Nexus S is problematic, for example for mass storage support.
It seems Samsung is pretty good at offering features of the next version in a previous incarnation. My 2.1 had the wifi AP - which belonged to 2.2.
Let's hope for some support. My primary hope would be lag fixes and after that ongoing security support.

Short: YES.

Not keeping my hopes up that we will get 2.3, if we do its an added bonus. The next galaxy S is just a couple of months away from release so Sammy might make that a selling point..

Also the source code for GB was posted on the http://opensource.samsung.com/ ..... for the gt-9000 (euro galaxy phone)
Who knows when we will get it......... here in the USA
Wasn't there a thread a couple of minutes ago about a supposed official announcement from Samsung about GB on Vibrant? Was it deleted?
Anyway, As was already announced in the recent conference, we should be getting GB by the end of this month so...
all galaxy s series?
include T-mobile vibrant?
did it state vibrant?
The whole SGS line is getting 2.3, just the North America variants later than the I9000. The SGS of the article is the I9000.
The international version of SGS has no provider crapware. This is why they get updated ahead of the T959. I don't think TMO will let it out because if it does, their new android phones will not sell. Why would you want to buy a new phone that has 2.2 when you can have 2.3 on a already powerful enough, georgous looking phone?

Next month? Probably greater chances.
They give about 1-2Weeks of OTA/Kies updates usually.. so yep
well considering for 2.2 sprint was rumored to get it first, then all of a sudden t-mobile came out of no where with the update first. That's what i'm hoping will happen with 2.3. Sprint already has some leaked builds of 2.3 for the epic so we can only hope. But definitely should see it by the end of this month. If not we should harass google.

Speculating on when we are going to get Gingerbread officially from samsung is pointless, it will happen when it happens. Until then we should just continue supporting our devs that have been working so hard to bring us 90% working gingerbread roms such as Simply Honey, Asgard, or CM7, and any others I may have forgotten.

Great work by sammy actually!! its just a matter of time before we get the leaks....
I am looking forward to this like the rest of us. However we need to take into account that delays (ATT i897 Gingerbread) aren't necessarily Samsungs fault. Quite often it is the carrier that causes the delays. So for those that are on ATT for example may have to wait longer then the rest of the world. Hopefully this is not the case.
Actual news came from. ...

Yup, Q1 is January to March. Who knows we might get it on the 31st of March
At least samsung is quicker than lg, it took them a whole year to update the optimius 2x from froyo to gingerbread. Really looking forward to ICS, hopefully it will land late January early February. I'm sure we'll have CM9 sometime in January.

+1. I was shocked when I read about the Gingerbread update for the O2X being released recently. I assumed all along it had Gingerbread. Shame on you, LG!
Speaking as someone who had to wait well over a year before my last phone *finally* got freaking Froyo (and was told it was never getting Gingerbread) this is a welcome and ambitious announcement. Here's to hoping Docomo can get on the same page as quickly as Samsung.
Looking forward to this - but I am still a noob enjoying all the custom roms the devs have to offer.

Seeing as we're already getting leaks, I would be surprised if the official ROM for international users would take that long to come out.

Why do you think that? The current status rather clearly points to a february/march release.
Current leaks are unstable, so probably a month more development for decent stability, then comes a period of wider testing (all different carriers and Samsung sales companies in different countries), probably some certifications made in parallell as well. Now we're in end of january or later...
Then some bug fixes once again after these tests. And some additional tests of course after these fixes.
I cannot see any possibility for an official release before mid-february, probably a bit later in March.
But of course, the leaks in january used for wider tests might be pretty good for all-day use, so if you don't require official releases you don't have to wait that long.
What a clever way of "stealing" us 3 months...

Does this mean that the leaks are non-indicative of the actual update, and we will indeed get ICS launcher/TW5?
