That would be pretty awesome on the Evo. Even if it cost an additional $100 (I'm hoping it'd be that cheap) I'd even be willing to have it done aftermarket if that were possible. Kinda like how colorware offers their service
I asked about this in the Q & A forum a while back. It seems that none of the HTC phones are equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass. I still would like to know if the glass that is installed on the EVO has an oleo-phobic coating. That question I just can't find an answer for. HTC is capable of this as the Hero has the coating. The coating made cleaning the screen on my iPhone 3GS soooo easy!

I have see test on youtube that show it's resistant to scratches. I have tested it out with keys.

now.. that said.. it is made of Glass and Glass in of itself, is a high scratch resistant material. what i wonder, how does it do against SHATTERING? I have dropped my hero a few times on hard surfaces and it does not show any evidence.
The gorilla glass is great, however, I still managed to somehow get a tiny scratch on my Droid's screen - and I'm anally careful with my phones. If the EVO doesn't have the gorilla glass, I may have to put on a screen protector, which I generally dislike.
I had my iPhone 3GS for almost a year and never had a screen protector or any scratches. Glass is hard to scratch. It has to be something harder than glass to scratch...like diamond. Glass is a "7" on the Mohs scale...diamond is a "10". Quartz, Topaz and something called Corundum are 7, 8 and 9. So, the odds of scratching glass are pretty slim unless you accidently hit it with a ring.
Sand will also screw your phone to hell and back, my friend took his iPhone to a bonfire we went to this week, I didn't touch my Hero all night but he was mingling with his iPhone a lot. He took out his phone the next day to see a bunch of minute scratches everywhere, whereas mine had nothing. Needless to say he was pissed. haha
Yeah, I can see sand scratching glass. Sand is used in making glass. My phone will never be in the sand, but I can see that.
Yeah shattering is the bigger functional concern, also on the 3GS I put the Power Support Anti-Glare to make the screen viewable in sunlight, easier to use with sweaty fingers & minimize fingerprints, so far it's been well worth the expense & for the EVO was considering http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/spm2hev4.htm, can someone vouch for it or recommend something comparable?

Maybe it has some sort of Flubber like qualities? That's the only way I could see that happening, and that doesn't even exist yet.

Did the same thing to my Zune HD, so now i'm just waiting for martin fields to make a screen protector for the evo. I've used them on a razr v3, TP1 and TP2, looks and feels just like the stock screens.
The good screen protectors - the ones you install with a liquid - are very rubbery. However, this isn't going to have an effect on shattering, which I agree is the bigger risk than scratching.

I don't know if the screen on the HTC Hero is the same as the one on the Evo but I've had that thing without any protectors and no scratches. I had a Droid for 30 days (Google IO gift), and that thing already has a scratch. I've been extra careful with that thing knowing that I'm going to sell it and it still got a scratch on it. From the looks of that youtube video, I hope the Evo is the same cause I don't like using screen protectors.

Manually replacing the glass sounds kind of risky!
You should realize that gorilla glass and products like it are much more brittle than standard glasses. While it can with stand scratches, it doesn't favor well in drops and impacts to it. Why not just use an invisible shield or other protector? Much cheaper and easier.
Trying to replace a screen that's made for the phone with a screen that's NOT made for the phone isnt gonna be easy or pretty.
when it comes to a drop/impact that would shatter or splinter the screen, it either will or won't. Having a case and protector on the screen helps. But if its from more than 2 feet, most likely the screen will shatter regardless of the type of glass.
My Hero has survived far more of its fair share of 5 foot falls onto asphalt with only minimal scuffing to the plastic case, there are no screen cracks, and no screen scratches either. If the Epic 4G is anything similar, it should be fine with both. Although I would like to note that, at least for me I would worry more about problems with the keyboard after the phone has been dropped, as was the case with my Touch Pro. Just my 1.9 cents.

One of the benefits of super amoled is that the screen is attached to the plastic/glass cover. It eliminated the dust and glare problems but it would most likely be impossible to replace it.

One of the great things about the HTC "chin" phones is that it's impossible to directly impact the screen on a flat surface like a floor or sidewalk without completely breaking the phone open. That's how it is on my G1, at least. Say what you will about the aesthetics, but I find that to be fantastic practical design.
When I went to the T-Mobile store to see their version, they intentionally dropped it and banged the screen HARD like 5 times to demonstrate how tough it was. Not a scratch. I wouldn't worry about screen durability.

Not gonna happen...they sell the display phone they drop to the customer ..lol jk....
Overall though I had plenty of LCD phones and I dropped them..threw them from room to room and never had any damage...I remember at one point I dropped my phone every day for like 6 months..but then again maybe I'm one of the lucky ppl :/

What's with all the gorilla glass stuff lately? As previously said gorilla glass isn't suitable for the Epic 4G because of the Super Amoled display, on top of this Gorilla glass is very scratch proof but at the sametime it's not meant to be dropped.

My Epic fell out of my pocket screen first onto a rock when I was getting out of my car a few days ago and didn't have a scratch/crack or anything on it.
The silicon case, however, got chipped.
As long as he did, I wanna say I'm pissed at how easily my Epic screen scratched. Weak.

I think I'm pretty careful with the phone and not have it in my pocket with other items like keys, change, etc. but I already have 3 small scratches in a little under 2 weeks. I was hoping to wait for a static cling screen protector but I'm thinking I should just get a wet, Invisible Shield, type one in the meantime since it seems to be easily scratched.
Is there gorlla glass? That's why I didn't buy a screen protector for my epic 4g, but I ended up getting scratches even though I keep it away from keys and change and stuff.
Apparently, fine particles of sand, quartz, etc can scratch the screen,which is bs because my hero got ONE noticeable scratch, and that was only from when I dropped it in the train tracks.

It's glass, so no. Nothing in your pocket should be sharp enough to scratch glass, including your keys. Plastic will scratch easily though.

I'm looking to get a screen protector too but just not sure which to go for. I usually go for the £4-5 ones from ebay but I'm guessing that's not going to be good enough for the nexus s.
I haven't seen a lot show up yet on the market and those that have don't get great write ups. Seems a protector is a must though.

You sure its glass? The Nexus S or the Hero you're referring to?
I never trust a screen on a mobile device, which will inevitably be dragged across and impacted by many things over its lifetime pretty much regardless of how careful you are (sharing pockets, being pulled out of holsters, being dropped, et cetera), to remain pristine when left as bare glass/plastic.
I know so-called gorilla glass is supposed to be extremely resistant to scratches, but if you want to be able to polish off your device and not see any defects on the screen after months or even years of normal use, I really think it's wise to invest in some sort of screen protector. Which one you have is less important, since any incident that punctures your screen protector is pretty likely to break your phone entirely (unless, like the people at Zagg, you enjoy taking a router to it).

that is 100% confirmed, there is no gorilla glass. However, the screen itself is glass, not plastic.
With that said, a screen protector is STRONGLY recommended as it is just normal glass and not gorilla.
The curved screen is suppose to help against drops, so if you drop it the entire screen won't hit the ground, therefor it shouldn't crack, or get scratched as easily.
Honestly everyone should buy a screen protector or invisible shield for their device, or keep it in a case/pouch
My captivate has gorilla glass and I have no scratches in the glass. I do not even worry about putting my phone in my pocket with my keys. I hate screen protectors so gorilla glass is a must for me. I don't understand why they went with cheap parts on the nexus s but google did the same thing with the n1.

Even if the Nexus S does have gorilla glass (I have no idea if it does or not), wouldn't the oleophobic coating on it be vulnerable to getting messed up regardless?
My Nexus One is seven months old and there's no sign of any scratches on the screen.

What I want to say is that the Nexus S can be up to Nexus One's scratch resistance, even the lack of Gorilla glass.
No Gorilla Glass on the Nexus S. I don't have a single scratch on my N1 after a year. My Nexus S got a scratch within a week. I think its less scratch resistant. There is a video on youtube of a guy trying to scratch his N1 with his keys unsuccessfully. I am usually always super careful with my phones but I think the curved screen got caught on something. Don't leave it to chance - if you're worried, get a screen protected.

I'm going to take my chances. I hate both the look and feel of all screen protectors.
I heard that the Samsung Focus had corning gorilla glass and hearing this I decided a screen protector wouldn't be needed (gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch resistant isn't it?). I'm the type of person who takes extra steps to protect his gadgets. I always hold my phone with a firm grip, I have a dedicated pocket for it (no keys or coins with it) and I never drop it. Recently I've noticed some scratches appearing on the front screen of my Focus. Most of them aren't very noticeable, but one in particular can be seen plain as day and is infuriating. Like I said, I don't have anything in my pockets, I've never dropped it and I want to know how these scratches appear on "scratch resistant" glass if nothing but my fingers and cloth are touching it.
If the Focus doesn't have the gorilla glass/gorilla glass isn't scratch resistant I will delete this thread in shame of my lack of knowledge
the zune HD has gorilla glass and I have a zune and a focus. I am reasonably sure the focus isnt gorilla glass, taps like plastic and scratches relatively easy. my zune has very little scratches after 8 months of abuse sharing pockets w/ keys; only one day with my focus in my pocket with my wallet i have scratches.
It does really seem like plastic. Or maybe really thin, versatile glass.

Samsung claims that the Focus has Gorilla Glass, so I guess you can just take their word for it. The Gorilla Glass might be underneath the plastic layer Samsung used. I think the Vibrant and European Galaxy S are the same way.

I bought a silicone case for it and for now I don't have a screen protector but things are going fine for me. The phone probably isn't bulletproof and considering how thin the Gorilla Glass is on the Focus it will do an exceptional job stopping the usual accidents but it won't stop anything more serious. But since you're an 'extra protection' kind of guy you should just get the screen protector and give yourself some peace of mind lol.

Usually I get a case, but I haven't found anything to appealing yet (I like for my phone to look good). Also I try to keep it in the best condition so when I go to resell it I get maximum value

gorilla glass is just harder to scratch and is a tougher glass overall so it can be made thinner than other glass digitizers...

They probably have another layer over the Gorilla glass.
The Focus's screen really feels like plastic. It's just not as solid as, say, the iPhone 4 (which is said to use Gorilla glass for the front.) Gorilla glass is supposed to be scratch-proof and you scratched it in a day? Hmm...
I do not have a case or a screen protector on my Focus and don't have a single scratch on the screen and only a few micro scuffs on the plastic battery cover. I am generally careful with my gadgets, but I have carried this phone with me every day since Nov 8th and both of my young children play with it on a regular basis, and still nothing. Thankfully I have not dropped it screen side down on any hard surfaces (knock on wood)!

It is not scratch proof.. It is much more scratch resistant... No glass is scratchproof

I can tell you from personal experience that a Focus screen will not survive a 3 foot fall on its face to concrete. And it is very very much made of glass.
But it seems relatively scratch resistant : )
Have you guys seen the youtube video of a guy testing out the glass screen of the focus? He's literally stabbing the phone with a screwdriver and smacking it with the handle and there was no scratches on the phone afterwards.

It's supposed to be extremely hard to scratch, even with a razor blade. The iPhone is practically invincible when it comes to keys and the like.

I'm not lying, I have no reason to be. I've also had the phone for about a week (and a half) and I think I might have actually dropped it once on the rubber foot mat of a car, but that was only like a 2 foot drop and it was rubber. I'm still perplexed as to how this scratch got on my Focus. I have some other little "soft" scratches, but those you can't see unless the screen is turned off and its at the right angle. The one I'm referring to is small, but when I use my Focus outside you can notice it (even on the black theme). I tried taking a picture, but it wouldn't come out.
Would it be possible to exchange it for another Focus at AT&T if I'm still in my 30 day trail period?

You'd have to talk to them, but I doubt it. Usually physical wear and tear isn't really covered. But couldn't you return it and then buy another one?
I'm assuming you got the scratch when the phone landed screen-down on the floor mat of the car. There are usually tiny rocks and some are bound to be more solid than the glass, thus the tiny scratch. So 'unlucky' then, I suppose.
if u have been using ur phone without a screen protector like i did, u will notice that the coating of the the screen got several scratches all over that can only be seen in odd angles under a bright light........ is anyone else experiencing this or is it just me ?? !!!

No screen protector, no scratches here. Have you tried to vigorously clean the areas with scratches? I thought I had a fine scratch a few days ago, but it cleaned off

they are small fine scratches in the coating, and some are long ones beside the speaker
i found out that the coating is highly scratchable which defeats the purpose of a gorilla glass
and if i use a SP on this beautiful screen it defeats the purpose of the coating too
im just thinking of leaving it as it is and when it looks really bad to remove the coating !!
unless there is something else i can do !!

It is RULE for any portable screen based devices to NOT BE TOUCHED until screen protector placed on the device.
Not trying to sound rude in anyway (don't like scratches either), even if Gorilla glass is break resistant, it can still a scratched just like ant other material.
I guess your going to have to wait until repair parts start becoming available online for you to buy a replacement glass.
For phones with oleophobic coating, yes there will be fine scratches after a while only noticeable at weird angles and in bright light like you mentioned.
My Nexus S and every other nexus S I've seen has it (except brand new ones) and I'm sure the SGS2 is similar.
You just have to ask yourself, what's the point of the oleophobic coating if you put a screen protector over it?

im pretty sure if u examined ur screen under bright light at some odd angles u will notice fine scratches out there, i have been really careful with my phone and still i got like 8 fine scratches in the coating, it seems that the coating is highly scratchable which defeats the purpose of the gorilla glass which is scratch resistant
You know what a good solution is? Um using a screen protector....

Not trying to sound rude in anyway (don't like scratches either), even if Gorilla glass is break resistant, it can still a scratched just like ant other material.
I guess your going to have to wait until repair parts start becoming available online for you to buy a replacement glass.

even if i got a new screen it will get scratched, the problem is not with the glass, i have been very careful, the coating is just highly scratchable, im thinking of removing the coating with some chemical dissolvent later when it really looks bad

You just have to ask yourself, what's the point of the oleophobic coating if you put a screen protector over it?

yes exactly, the coating is there to protect the screen from oil and smudges, but it is highly scratchable which deafeats the purpose of a gorilla glass which is scratch resistant, so now i should put a screen protector to protect the coating from getting scratched, which in turn defeats the purpose of the coating as it will become totally useless !!!!
i think we shud just remove the coating at some point using some chemical dissolvents, as i find no point of keeping it under a screen protector anyway :S
