Galaxy Tab - Phone application? - Epic 4G General

Since the Epic and Tab will are very similar devices i figure someone here might know the answer to my question.
Sprint had decided to remove the phone calling capabilities from the Galaxy Tab.
I want to get the Tab but do not want to pay for both a phone and tablet service.
would I be able to side load the phone application and just make calls from my Google Voice #? or would i have to use some other VOIP service?
Help

Google voice works good for me, also fring, skype. Sprint Galaxy Tab.

I have the Tab and Google Voice on it. All I can do with it is use the SMS and Voicemail functions. It will not use Google Voice for calls.

Isn't there a sgs tab forum?

Managing Tab plus other Android device

Hi all,
Before I got my Tab I bought a Tmo Vibrant which is still my primary phone. I am trying to figure out from everyone else how you manage having multiple android devices. Do you give people the number of your Tab and tell them that it is for texting only but no calls? Do you just use your Tab for general internet and use your other device for texting / calling?

I would be lost without it, from a communications perspective.
However, your thread caught my interest because I am struggling with a way to manage multiple devices, actually. Between Dropbox and Evernote, I am doing ok, but I am always looking for better, faster, stronger...

I use my tab for all. I use Bluetooth handsfree for all calls and use it for internet and texts. I use it in my car for navigation. So i use only one device for all.

The challenge is, I have no desire to flash a new ROM to allow for calls. I bricked my Vibrant flashing so I'm a little gun shy! Because I'm in the US, I can't make calls using the Tab, so I'm pretty much stuck with two devices. I want to switch everything over to the Tab so I can do it all from there, but the calls issue is a drawback to that.

Rob,
So do you use Google Voice for VOIP calls from your Tab? I have a Google Voice number, but the text messaging interface in GV is pretty horrible. It's convenient, but it needs more functionality.

Google Voice on Android is not a VOIP app.
I to have a Vibrant and a Tab..
See, what I do is I use the Vibrant for calls texts and all apps that would be weird to be on the Tab such as the sonic screwdriver or the lifesaber apps.
And I use my tab more for like email and whatnot...here's the breakdown:
The Vibrant is an extension of my Tab, and the Tab is an extension of my laptop.

(Q) Calls on USA gt with no minutes?

I have been reading many posts on flashing roms and such to USA galaxy tablets that allow them to make calls. Ok, I understand that. What I want to know is how that all works out since no US plans have call minutes for our tablets. I am looking for specifics. Is this VOIP? or what? Second, Why only 2G if this mod is made?
For GSM tabs, you need to use a sim with voice and data.

Its VOIP. At least the ones I've seen. Made over wifi. Since there is no calling plan with minutes tied to the Tab it can't be a typical voice call. Sipdroid from the market with Google Voice accomplished this as well and is very easy to set up without root (I'm pretty sure). Just set up GV. Download sipdroid and before entering anything click on the bottom tab that says create with GV account. It will ask password and to create a pbx account and ow right in that screen. Then its done.
Its funny but if you try to select the dialer it says calls can't be made with Samsung Galaxy Tab. But if you select the box for a number the keyboard dialer pops up and allows you to type a number! Works great.
I just tried it over 3g with wifi off and works as well. Just select allow voice over 3g in your account tab.
This was showed to me and there is a thread on droidx forums
I realize this isn't 100% relevant to your thread, just thought I would point you to it if you were wanting to make calls on tab.
I have VZW tab. I have no idea on GSM

All the provider cares about is the Sim card. So all you need is a sim with what you want, and then change/disable the IMEI of your tab.
I was able to set this up bit when I call my goog voice # from my wife's phone it still only rings my dumbphone. Do I need to add my tab number to Google voice somehow?

Go to your Google account and select the voice icon. Settings in top right. Voice setting. Then at bottom select add another phone. I was able to add it, but cannot get it to verify. So I'm not sure if it can receive calls, just make.
And to the poster about the SIM card, I'm on VZW, no sim card or slot.

For SIPDroid, does it do that annoying thing where it asks the receiving person to accept the call ? Or is it just like regular calling?
Does it do that call back thing?
If you install firmware that allows phone calls it works no different than any other Android phone. Pull the SIM out of your Android phone and insert into the Tab and viola you have a 7" Android phone that can make calls and browse the web. The easiest way to think about it is that the Tab is a big Android phone, the carrier's don't know any difference because it's running the same O/S as Samsung's Android phones.

Using google voice to text on glaxaxy tab

Using google voice to text has proven to be a problem. The tab was never activated and does not have a phone number associated with it so I cant associate the tab with my google voice number.

Go to IPKall and get a free #. Look at the VoIP call set up for Sprint in Dev forum. Once you have your own number that will associate with GV, it should work. Voice work (calling back) so I assume text should to.
I've done this just fine.i bought both my tabs outright from both sprint and at&t. Use sip droid with voice with out EVER having a number assigned to the tab.
Read what is stated above cause I did.

Google voice is a cloud-based visual voicemail manager and can be used as a call redirector to redirect incoming calls to one or more devices capable of receiving voice calls.
Google also supports direct phone calling from the desktop (but not currently from non-phone mobile devices).
What are you trying to set up?

people have made the Galaxy Tab working with Google voice.
Make and receive calls from the Galaxy Tab with Google Voice
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItTIswb1AnQ
In that video he is using a SIM card from a device with voice + data (which you can not get on the Tabs original SIM card. (Which is why is is "stuck on 2g"))
There are fixes and work-arounds that allow the 2g + voice option and they can be found in this forum as well as the development forum. Currently, there is no known way to do voice calls + 3g on the tmobile network (which I assume you are on because that's what he is on in the video)
Google voice is simply a redirector, it is NOT a program that makes phone calls. In order to use it, you still must have a number to route to and from.
Hope this helps.
What the OP may be thinking of is integrating Google Voice with a VOIP provider such as Skype or pbxes.
If that is the case, there are a number of excellent tutorials already on this forum explaining how to do that for different VOIP suppliers.

U didnt have to flash any rom nor root. All u need is to read the bible in Dev sticky. Instruction is in one of the links at the bottom of 1st post

this is also worth a read.
What can also be done is, if you have your tab set up to be a phone with any of the "free favourites" plans is to have GV send you ITS number instead of the caller's original number so that all incoming calls are free.
Similarly, if you install GV on a phone, you can set it to intercept all outgoing calls and forward them to a special local GV number - which I believe can also be added as a favourite - thereby enabling free calling within the US.

xoom wifi google voice calling?

I have google voice installed on my wifi xoom when I try to call someone it calls my phone then when I answer it my phone calls the contact I tried to call from GV.? Is there any way to just make calls from GV? It also is the same for the browser version of GV. Texting works on both though.
Google voice is not a voice over IP service, it doesn't do calls.

Actually there is a way. Go to the Xoom developers forum and open the thread called "CRTAnim+desktop.........". Go to last page. Note that you have to be rooted to do this.

o man I was thinking it did because when I had it installed on my old g1 back in the day I made calls from my g1 with google voice. But don't remember it calling my g1 then connecting to the contact I called. Sorry for the dumb question. I feel very supid now
okay thanks don't know if I will be rooting this one tho. Can't say I won't because I always do when I get tired of waiting for the newest update lol.
If you dont want to root, and still make voip calls with this, its easy..
get a sipdroid account, at pbxes.org
install sipdroid on the xoom
install something like acrobits SIP dialer, or, you should be able to do it with your google voice account
the thread that tells you how to sync your google voice account to sipdroid is here
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-apps/15366-sipdroid-free-voip-via-google-voice.html
there are some issues today with pbxes servers, so it may not work right at the moment, but trust me, I have been making voip calls from my evo for months using this, and, made tons of calls from the xoom earlier in the week using this method
have fun!
cool thanks I will check that out.

Wait... how did you get Google Voice on your Wi-Fi Xoom?
It's not in the Market.
you dont need google voice on your tablet, per se, you just need a google voice account, ad, you do the configuring from the google voice website..

Side load it. There's an older thread on this forum titled something like "I got GV working...." it includes a link where you can do a hacked version of GV that works great for SMS.
