Revamped Manual Update Instructions
1- Be sure the file is simply named UPDATE (do not put .zip at the end). --> the file name should be in ALL lowercase letters...this might resolve errors for some
2- Copy the file into the Root (base) folder of your memory card
3- Power Down phone manually
4- Hold down the Volume Down button and power on the phone
5- Scroll up/down using the volume button, highlight RECOVERY & then Press the Power button
6- You'll see the HTC Logo, then will be prompted with a picture of a red exclamation mark w/ a pic of the phone
7- Now press the Volume UP & Power button
8- A menu will 'pop-up'
9- Choose the option to Apply SDcard: update.zip (by pressing the power button)
10- Give the phone about 5 minutes to finish the update, it may (will) reset itself a few times during the update.

No offense, but until I see an official release, it is still rumor... This was the case last time, and people got all fired up for no reason. I don't believe TMO reps about 98% of the time. If it happens then great, hope some folks have logcat running.
This makes me chuckle as T-Mobile just replied to my tweet telling me the resets, reboots and other issues are "app conflicts" and a master reset should fix it lmao. Hopefully there is an OTA, I'm on my 3rd G2 and remorse period now, this swapping game is getting old...

I would suggest that people wait to do the OTA so the experts can look at it and give us the go ahead if it is safe and wont ruin the chances of being able to root.... I am however getting a replacement tomorrow for my current phone if the update is available I will do it on the old phone if the new one doesnt already have it... then I will report back.

OTA's are staged out in batches, not all at once. T-Mobile has sold about a million of these phones at this point (given that Samsung claims 3 million SGS Phones sold in the U.S. this is entirely likely). They are most definitely NOT going to update a million phones at the same time.
The update for YOU could come now, tomorrow, next week, or before the end of the month. Sitting here in a thread hitting refresh hoping for vital info about the OTA is a complete waste of time.
You have four options...
1). Wait for the OTA, which will arrive whenever it arrives
2). Frankin Twiz, built on JI6
3). Bionix 1.6, built on JI6
4). leaked unmodified JI6 firmware
Options 2,3,4 will get you JI6 today, with the associated risks of taking the management of the update into your hands. Option 1 is the official option which requires nothing but patience. Decide.
Wonder if I could call T-mobile and naively ask about a GPS problem and see if they will go ahead and push JI6 to me?

Ha! You think customer care or tech care have that much power? The people in tmo who do, ssg data, don't take any calls and if they want to, never actually have to talk to the customer at all. They work solely on trouble tickets and work orders. The highest you may get by calling tech is atsg, the people who submit trouble tickets to them.

On another note, why are so many people waiting patiently for the OTA? Just flash one of the leaks. Bionix 1.6 is well worth it! And you can always ODIN back to stock!

I got off the phone with tech support at T Mobile a few hours ago and here is what they related to me. Your inability to get checkin succeeded may or may not be usual or normal, they have no clue and the OTA is scheduled to run from 10-7 thru 10-31. has anyone else or does anyone else have the same inability to get feedback from the checkin code? This is the only phone I have had that the checkin failed to register except for a MT3g which they promptly replaced.
got the update today... no problems so far...

Nothing that isn't openly available on the web. Apparently HTC had a newsletter which explicitly stated that Froyo for Slide would be pushed as an OTA by T-Mobile in December. So I made this post to keep myself informed... most people will come here and make a post, which I'll see via email ASAP.

Well that's going to depend on which ROM they are using. Something like CR_MOD and Slidemeroot *will* receive the notification to update. Others, like CyanogenMod Rom's will not since they are missing the APN setting and a few other prerequisites for update notifications. I haven't tried but will see if I add the FOTA APN maybe I'll get the notification (unless some one knows that won't work).

That's the thing, the Slidemeroot ROM will receive OTA messages from T-Mobile that are bogus and will unroot your phone. This is why I do not want any Slidemeroot users to post that they have an update available.
well i have CM6.1 on here. But i suppose once the new OTA for froyo comes out, we'll be able to get some true slide Froyo ROMs out, so it won't be a big deal if i can't get the OTA to my phone anyway lol.
unrooted~
I unrooted anticipating Froyo cause all I kept reading was DECEMBER 15th. and well thats only for the MT3G not the slide. Damn misinformed Tmobile reps. putting out bad info that gets spread like wildfire on the web.
So I HTC, got the number from Tmo Rep. Talked to Tech Support there and the update that just went out is only for MyTouch 3G, NOT THE SLIDE. HTC is waiting for TMOBILE to ask for the Update for the slide, which they have NOT. Then HTC makes it and test it, get payment and approval from Tmobile and then get the okay to pust the update to customers. So Tmobile starts the update ball rolling and then has to push it out after HTC/Android is done with it. The information can't be much more official than that. Hope this clears everything up for anyone who can't get proper answers to their questions. Not questions about a phone we don't have.

Recent article from Tmonews:
With news of the myTouch 3G LE and Fender editions prepping to receive their Android 2.2 update, plenty of myTouch Slide customers are left wondering when is their turn. Well the good news it’s being worked on, the bad news is we’re hearing exactly what kind of trouble is delaying the update. Apparently there are two problems holding up the public release:
1) Wi-Fi calling doesn’t work 100% of the time, we’re not sure what that means, if calls are dropping or not starting at all on Wi-Fi but we know it’s holding up release.
2) The OTA update is right now being directed to the wrong partition, which doesn’t have enough memory to process the update.
We received word that HTC is aware of both of these problems and is actively working on a fix. No release date time frame was given but as soon as we hear more, we’ll drop the news right away!

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).

I found a store in my town that had the SD Card gingerbread update so I went there today. While I was waiting to be seen, I saw a My Touch 4g get updated using the SD Card by a customer service person. It took about 10 minutes. I was encouraged to see how quick it took. Now it was my turn. The customer service (C/S) who assisted me was a former tech support person for Tmoble who was now working in a store. She was very knowledgeable and very nice. She took my sdcard out and put in the gingerbread sdcard. The update started. There was about 10 steps that the update had to go through. The first step was 'bootloader'. The C/S said that this was the first G2 that she has done. She said she had done her My Touch 4g Slide and the update went smooth so again I was encouraged. I was happy to not have to wait for the OTA.
Well the update started on the first step and 45 minutes later, it was still on the first step. So she stopped the update to allow me to do a factory reset of my phone and I did so. The store had two gingerbread sdcards so she tried the second one on my phone. I went to starbucks for coffee and 20 minutes later, the update was still stuck on the first step. So, she told me that there was something wrong. She asked me if I had done anything to the phone? I said no. I told her that this G2 was a replacement phone that I had just recieved about a month ago because my first G2 stop charging. Well she gave up and so did I.
I called TMO C/S and they said that they had no record of the G2's having problems with the store gingerbread sdcards. He first asked me if I had any third party apps on my phone, I said no. They told me that the cards did not come from them but they came from HTC. So, I called HTC. The guy there commenced to reading the press release that we all have read a thousands times about being able to go to the store and get gingerbread after August 6. He also told me that he had no record of G2's having problems getting the update at the stores. I asked him if the same SD Card was to be used on the My Touch and on the G2? He said that he did not know and yes he was tech support . He advised me to call HTC headquarters at a different number and ask them that but they were closed.
I know some of you are gonna tell me to do the update myself with the links that are eveywhere on the web. Well, I'm not gonna do that. Tmo and HTC gotta get it together. They are running a business and they MUST do what they say they gonna do. I know that TMO don't have to provide any updates, I know this but they are offiering the updates and they tell us to wait for the OTA or go to a store after the Aug 6. Well I did that, I got nothing. By the way, there are three TMO stores in my town and only one had the SDCARDS. Peace

That's being kinda rude. If he doesn't want to root or apply manually he doesn't have to. He's just telling us what happened. No need to be rude.
OP, if the SDcard update didn't work, you should wait and see if you can get the OTA. If the OTA isn't working for your device either, you should contact T-mobile and express that you'd like a phone with 2.3 or will properly update to 2.3, assuming that you don't want to root or manually apply the update yourself.
That's ridiculous....minus the rude part, it is true tmobile and htc would much rather see you buy one of their newer phones and renew your contact than get a good working update. Try custom roms if you can...the vision is one of the easiest to root and stable when rooted and there are hundreds of roms around, I'm sure theres some rom gingerbread flavored you'll like.

Whether you choose to root or not, it's your device and you can do what you want with it. If you want the stock T-mo experience, then they should give you what they promised you. Good luck!
While I disagree with you rooting (many of the problems here are people who shouldn't even need to root in the first place, it's not for everybody), I don't understand why you wouldn't manually update. Download the file, name it update.zip, put on your sd card root, press a few buttons, done!

I may have the answer. You said that you had received the phone as a replacement. Did it already have gingerbread on it? Remember that some of the phones people were getting as replacements had gingerbread 2.3.3 on them and if your phone was one of those you can't update from 2.3.3 to the final release which is 2.3.4. Just a thought.

I am very familar with rooting. I rooted my G1 within 5 months of having it and it stayed rooted for a year and half more until I retired it and got the G2. The reason I chose not to root my G2 was because I did not want to be contastantly flashing and removing roms and fixing issues. I got tired of baby sitting my G1. I have other things to do.

So... you tried a bunch of half-baked "roms" made by a bunch of kiddies who don't know what they're doing and found it a royal PITA. Ever heard of a "superstock" system image? Its basically the factory image with a few goodies added in, specifically ROOT. It doesn't require any "babysitting", but opens the door for some amount of enhancement, like the ability to change your hosts file (usually used to block spam), or the ability to delete useless cruft from the system image (i.e., you don't like the gmail application? Delete it.). You don't have to go with a full out special brownies system, but it is nice to at least gain control of what you own.
The store I work at finally got the SD cards to update, but the G2 update will not install.
The update works fine on the mytouch 4g, so the card is goood.
Well that sucks. Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Looks like I figured it out. The G2 would only update if the battery was %100 charged.
Any less and it would freeze during the update.
Now that I know the update works I'll try and post the files when I get home.
Thanks atlp99!
I'd really like to get my hands on that file. I assume it is a pc10img.zip ? Seems like this is the best solution for those of us running the 2.3.3 leak...
G2 2.3.4 update pc10img
Here is the G2 update off of the micro sd cards the stores are receiving.

Works for 2.3.3 leak!
Just used this file to update my G2 running the 2.3.3 "leaked" gingerbread rom. No problems. Just slip the file into your root directory, and hold the volume down while turning the phone on. Piece of cake. You will lose your application data, of course, but you'll be updated...

No less than a day after I suck it up and downgrade my G2 to 2.2 so I can update (using update.zip) to 2.3.4 does the PC10IMG.zip get posted. My lack of patience kicked in. Nevertheless, thank you for posting this!

Having my battery at 100 percent did not work for me. The update still just sat there looking at me. This is crazy buy while I was trying to figure out what the problem was. I decided to do checkin and about 5 minutes later, I got the updae OTA
my phone just got a new update message pop up. i was unlucky enough to get stuck with 2.3.3.... so im avoiding this update unless i should do it??
As a rule, I don't take any updates .
neither do i but the notification is quite annoying....
It should have been identified with a series of numbers member what they were?

ok thank you. i just dont wanna wait too long to perm-root, im giving it 2 weeks. if i see nothin by then, oh well im out of luck lol. i shut mobile networking off, and wifi wont scan anymore due to this update.... i was just using it and this update popped up and shut it off.
Did you go to setting - system updates - HTC software updates uncheck the box for scheduled checks then back out with the back key and it shouldn't notify you again.

thank you, i did do that, the thing stayed till i clicked it and hit cancel now its gone
Since you're stuck with an unrooted phone, you might as well update your phone. It could be bug fixes such as mms issues, loading screens, updated radio, and so on.
Also maybe you can provide us with an update zip, once you download and before you update.
from the Speedy EVO Engine...
I say go with the update. Have you seen any of the videos of it, it also gives you sense 2.1. Itgives way more features than it has now. Trust me, go with the update, you wont regret it.
eh.... i wouldnt even know where to find the zip. its small anyway. but i dont wanna get screwed over permanently. knowing my luck the second the update finished a perm root comes out.. so i will wait.
