the power button are suks, and very very not comfortable, even more with silicon case.
i am a "nexus one" user, and i remember that we mod the phone to turned on with the track ball,
and as far as im remember, we can mod it to turned on with any another button - even the touch buttons...
there is some apk software for that - so no root neded, i jest cant fint it on the market and i dont know
if the same appz will work on the DHD.
that can be useful even if the power off button will die (HTC issue...)
update: find one that do the job: "Screen Mode Widget" - for free in the market.
set it up to "AwakeStay mode", its Allows the screen to go off, and clicking any
physical button - vol up/down brings the screen back up.
Thanks for this. I'be been looking for something similar. to clarify, Did you set the widget to 'never lock'? That seems to do as you desribed

Can you have it so that the volume button wakes the phone, without completely unlocking it?
Widget Locker is also a great app for this and other functionality. Not free though.
question is, will using these widgets cause the phone not to sleep properly and then battery life suffers?
The power button is the worst part of the dhd. Any workaround to not having to use it is worth trying

Is there no other way to get the phone out of idle then pressing the button on the top of the phone?
it is a pain in the ass.
I agree, its not the most convenient.
Pressing the tracker ball does it for me.

You'll get used to it in no time!
Trackball method does not work for me.
doesnt work for me either, the tracker ball would be nice...
did you change an option for that?
The track ball doest do it for me either. I don't mind using the button on top of the phone. I've always used HTC phones and a lot of them use the button on top to wake it up. You should get used to it pretty quick.
Damn, I was hoping the trackball would work... I disliked this about the Droid as well. It takes two hands to unlock the phone, doesn't it? The G1 and MT3G methods were better.
shouldn't we be able to remap the button pressed to work with the trackball? (with root access that is)
i agree...im not liking the top button to wake up the phone...trackball does not wake it for me either...
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
I will say, the button placement on the top is much better than the Motorola droid. I was worried myself, but I got used to it super fast, and it isn't an issue at all.
(Former G1 owner, used to just pressing menu twice)
Just download "Keyguard Disabler" from the Android Market. It will allow you to use the trackball to turn the screen back on.
The screen is capacitive touch, and so is the "hardware" buttons.
If you want to be able to power up the phone from sleep with these buttons, that would require the capacitive touchscreen to be active while the phone is sleeping.
Wouldn't that affect the battery life?

Agreed. look here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613864&page=2
David1171 has a partial solution. Problem is I'm guessing, that there is no way to setup a double tap. Maybe someone knows.
I'm hoping that a future release of spare parts will have a setting for both a double or triple tap of the track bar to wake up, with or without the slide lock. ( I think that the slide lock would be less annoying if the track ball woke it up first instead of the poorly located power button) Also I am hoping that it will have settings to adjust the trackball notification flash speed and color for different google apps.
Just to let you know:
There is a thread about the trackball for wakeup thing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5337345
I got used to it pretty fast, its funny my other phone is a G1 and i find myself trying to unlock it by pushing up top all the time now haha, just become instinct.
I've heard a lot of people say they have trouble unlocking the Nexus One with one hand, but personally I have no trouble unlocking the device with one hand... with either hand.

This person does not own a Nexus One.
Lockbot from market. Don't need pro, the free version will do.
Dunno why they copied the iPhone with the slide to unlock, with the magic its so easy you press the power button which is near the trackball then press menu.
It would be great if you could just press trackball then menu button to unlock.
So i've been dealing with this for the last week or so and I finally decided to stop searching and scouring the internet and ask for some help from my XDA brethren.
I don't exactly know how or why, but all the hard buttons on my HD2 do not work anymore. Volume up and down, pick up, home, menu, back, and hang up buttons... all not working. They all stopped working at the same time.
I don't really care except for the fact that I cannot wake my phone up after it locks/sleeps. I tried an app called Shake and Wake with no luck. Any sugguestions? or should I just look for a new phone? I really don't want to give up on my HD2... we've been through a lot! Thanks a ton you guys, I really appreciate it.
If I were you I would head on over to the nexus one threads and ask the question.
That phone only has one button, and some folk have had that not work, so they are used to the problem, and I'm sure they will have a solution for you. Worth a try anyway........
Button Savior - free from Market
Jadrobe, I really like button saviour but that still doesn't solve my problem, how do I wake the phone up without any buttons?!!
do your volume buttons work? if so, you could use ButtonRemapper (paid app) to remap one of your volume buttons to work as your power button and do the rest with button savior.
Nope, none of the buttons work!! I'm screwed!
Then yes, you are indeed screwed. Sorry for your misfortune.

Pretty much. If you have one working button then you could use an app called "button remapper"
Have you flashed back to stock/something different yet? Seems a touch coincidental that they all go at once. The bottom 5, or the two volume yea, cos they're on two separate input busses, but for both to fail together... not saying it couldn't happen, just saying it could be something else.
If there not working how do you turn on your phone?
When I slide the battery into the phone it automatically boots up as if I pushed in the power button.. it never used to do that before.
And also right after it powers up it sends me straight to slide to shut down which kind of makes me believe I may have the power button stuck on or something? I'm going to try to flash the stock rom and see what happens. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks!
Dude!! Proximity Screen Off (look in Abdroid Themes and Apps sub-forum) could fix you up in combination with button savior !
It has an option to use the prox sensor to put your phone to sleep and to wake it. The downside is it will drain your battery faster than normal because the prox sensor is in use when the screen's off. But it could keep your phone useable til you can get your buttons fixed (probly just your power button is malfunctioning it sounds like to me)

Thanks a ton Huggs. I'll definitely look into it, as the main reason I love this phone is for Android roms!
So far i've had good luck with this Winmo 6.5 app. I had to revert to the base/stock Tmo rom and it works okay.
Shake and Wake
http://www.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/shakenwake-mod-for-hd2/
I frequently use my phone as an audio player/streamer. I've been using a widget to prevent the screen from sleeping entirely which was all fine and dandy, except that I now have Pandora's GUI burned into the bottom of my phone. I absolutely hate having to press the physical power button to wake my screen and then unlock it just to skip a track or whatever. Does anyone know of an app that would allow the screen to black out, but then awaken via touch? Ideally with no lockscreen, but to the lockscreen without the power button would even be heaps better than having to deal with that physical power key on the side of the phone.
I'm in the same boat. Annoying. Hate having to push the power button. Would love to hear a solution.
Samsung-SGH-I997 Infused 2.1.0
Am at least using "no lock", which trims the swipe-to-open step. Its a start and enables volume button as an choice too.
Dangers in access of your phone's sensitive material however are frightening if one's not using a psswd or other swipe action access. Point is, "no lock"-type apps could be quite regrettable if oops I lost my phone. With all the email access and other various accts most probably have auto-accessed, I myself need to start taking a good look at the what ifs. Sad, but bank quality psswd access to your phone makes good sense. Perhaps an app that allows one to temporarily disable power button on and swipe open access controls for specified time pds would be nice.
Samsung-SGH-I997 Infused 2.1.0
Definitely. I was thinking something along the lines of a widget that, upon activation, would prevent the phone from sleeping and, after a user defined period of inactivity, display a black screen that would be dismissed by a simple touch anywhere. So the phone would never actually enter a sleep state or require any sort of fancy circumvention of the power button. Then, after you're done getting your media on, you toggle the widget off. Security left in tact.

Is there a way to disable the hardware keys apart from the volume keys on the side when the phone is locked? There are some times that i find the screen on when i get it out of my pocket. Plus i turn the screen on by pressing the volume keys in order to use the physical keyboard less.
Currently I'm using the latest Hyperdroid Rom(stock 2.3.4 room. With CM7) and Widgetlock

Unfortunately, you cannot do that as this is the way Android is designed. Its standard to all android phones due to the framework itself. The only thing you might be able to do with apps like 'Widget Locker' is to restrict the the hardware buttons that can wake the phone up. This can be done by turning off 'Easy Wake Mode' in Widget Locker. For example, instead of any hardware button, you can ensure only the power button wakes the device up. You can also set the lockscreen timeout to maybe 5 secs in CM settings, so that even if the device is accidentally woken up in your pocket,it will return to standby after 5 secs. Hope this helps. But i have to say that you have a very good suggestion. It would be really great if Android, CM or any app has this feature. Maybe you might want to suggest this to the CM team?. Im sure they have the means to do it.
I need info for any app which can lock/unlock the N4 using any alternative way like gesture etc, I don't just want to press the power button every time. Seems like pressing power button too much would damage it in long run. I tried cover algorithm but it doesn't seem to work for me. I'm on stock rom without root. I'm noob too

You will need to be rooted
Check this thread out Touch Control aka Slide to Wake
Since the day i have bought N4.. I hardly remember using the power hardware button. Below are the apps i use for powering on my device and turning off the screen.
- Smart screen on
- Screen off
And for manually setting the volume, you can use Power Toggles.
Note: you do NOT need to be rooted to install all these apps.
Hope this helps.
