Now that I am rooted all I want my epic to be hot spot so I can access with
my laptop online. I downloaded wireless thether and works on epic but laptop can't see any access point, do I need to do something else besides just downloading some wifi app.
dito33
refresh the access points on your comp..it should see the signal coming from the phone. make sure you know what the epics access point is labeled in case its there and youre just skipping over it. theres also mobileap, an alternative to the wireless tether app
Nope, SSID default is AndroidTether, but nothing like that and yes I am refreshing,
my question is do I need to put some kind of kernel cuz app said before installation require root and Netfilter-enable kernel don't know what this last one is.
dito33
Mobileap doesn't work with rooted phones. Is your laptop a Macbook? If so you need to enable permissions.
Try either Pre9 or Pre11

Dear Mr. stir fry a lot,
You are my savior, thanks for pointing the different versions, for some reason I was using pre 4. Now I try ver pre-11 Works fine.
Now what else do I need some back up, what the heck is clokwork etc, can I put something else there too.
dito33
Remember it is an Ad-hoc (peer to peer) network, make sure your wireless connection for your computer is set up for that.
edit: nevermind...plz delete post!

Hi All,
First of all Wirless Tethering, I have One click Rooted my epic, and installed the wifi tether app but am not able to transmit signal (other devices cannot detect my wifi transition). In other words it’s not working. Do I have to install a specific kernel for this to work? and if so where would I get it?
Secondly, CyanogenMod and Froyo. Are they available for the Epic yet?, where, if not when?
Finally, Rooting, is there any way to tell that my device is perm-rooted? I want to make sure the rooting was successful even though it should be because my phone restarted like the directions said it would.
Thanks Much, p.s. I just left apple/att for epic/sprint so I don’t know all the terminology, please explain in detail Thanks!!
No cyangen mod 6 yet, or any roms yet, however roms will be coming real soon.
As for checking root try using an app that requires root like titanium backup.
For wifi tether, what version are u using?
Sent from my Epic 4G
for the Tether im using 2.0.5-pre8 istalled via tAttachAPkInstaller. I found this in the forums and people claimed to have success with it. The tether app in the marketplace said it needed a special kernel for it to work, any idea on where to get that and how to install new kernels?
To check root just type "su" in terminal and you should get "#" prompt.

Ur using the right wifi tether app, I use the same and it works fine for me. Idk why its not working for u.

Wifitether is probably working, it only broadcasts AD_HOC mode, which a lot of devices won't pick up. Make sure your Wifi drivers are updated and you are using a computer (not a p2p or DS).
I checked the root by installing titanium backup and it wen smoothly, but this damn tether app is driving me craZY! i have uninstalled and reinstalled the whole proccess and nothing works.... when i first start the tether app the download goes from 0 to .4 kb and the upload goes from 0 to .1 and then bot go back to 0 and thats it...... no other phones or computers have been able to see my signal... anything in the settings might be messing me up?? maybe diff chann?? im currently broadcasting on Chan 11.... even when i use bluetooth to connect it said paired but not connected....WHAT IN THE HELL BOBBY !!!!! i needs some helps
I had the same problem with wifi tether until I updated the wifi drivers on my PC. In my case I could see the network "androidtether" but attempting to connect caused the NIC to timeout requiring a disable/enable to get going again.
Still waiting for someone to get wifi tether working in access point mode. That's one thing I'm really going to miss from my Evo when I switch tonight.
I know its not wifi, but the pdanet tether application has been working great for me on the Epic. Its in the marketplace and can be installed without root. It does USB/Bluetooth, but not wifi.
OK i tried the PDAnet app but i cant seem to pair a friends iphone 4 with my device... i turn on blue tooth then pair then turn on the app and try to connect/repair but it keeps saying "paired but not connected" any settings i have to mess with on this app or the iphone 4 to make this work?
Thanks much for the helps.

I don't think the iPhone's bluetooth supports bluetooth DUN profile, that's why it didn't connect. iPhone's wifi supports ad-hoc wifi though.
I rooted my buddies epic today and installed wifi tether and we couldn't get it to work. The app was granted su permission and turns on, but no PC or other wifi phones can find it. Any ideas? Trying to leave him on a stock rooted rom because he has no idea what's going on. Thanks.

Wireless Tether from the market doesn't work, you'll need a different version. Uninstall the one from the market and install the latest one from here (pre11 works for sure, but the newer ones should also): http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

Try turning on access control and add the computer to it. That's always worked for me.

I think your issue is that Wireless Tether creates an ad-hoc network, and most (if not all?) Android devices cannot connect to ad-hoc networks (at least without some work). It's working fine, just the Evo cannot connect to it. You would need a laptop or something else. As suggested, try MobileAP, since it works in infrastructure mode.
I pulled the .apk file from the syndicate rom and that one worked with no issues at all.
Attached are the files I used. I put them on my SD card and installed. Up and running with no issues.
This is what you gotta do.. get it all installed and open it... then hit "menu" followed by "access control" ...when that page pops up, at the top right corner there's a box that's unchecked... check that box... now trn on the tether, alow a minute for the computer to pick it up then try to connect... when it pops up it'll show "androidtether" as the name... connect to it... at this point it'll ask your phone for permission, so slide down the statusbar and click on the little image that pops up... it'll take you back to the "access control" page and beside where the computer just showed up, click the little box and it should start tethering at that point... hope that helps...
Note: these steps are for the apps listed in post #2 that you download from google.

So I haven't rooted yet and have been super pleased with Launcher Pro Plus so far in terms of customization, the social networking widgets, etc.
Going out of town tomorrow morning, driving to Arizona and could REALLY benefit from having wifi tether for the trip. Worth rooting just for that? I figure I can always revert back but once I root, do I lose the UI as I have it now, meaning will I be FORCED to choose a new rom once I do so or does it essentially stay the same and give me the 'option' of flashing a new ROM?
Thanks.
Yes, it's worth it. No you don't need a custom rom or anything else. You won't even notice you're rooted other than the SuperUser icon in your app drawer.
Word, thanks. Looks like z4root is no longer in the market, will search around for another option I guess.
Save the .apk to your SDCard and then run it from the local explorer, called files I think. Can't remember since I'm on the RubiX rom.
Right on, found an apk, put to SD card and am now doing the permanent root. Icon spinning, how long this take out of curiosity?
Not very long. Make sure your SDcard isn't mounted to your PC via USB Mass Storage or PC Mode. Charge only setting will allow your phone to be mounted to itself.
Didn't know I had to be USB'd to my PC, assumed once the apk was local to the device I'd be okay. Looks like it's finally rebooting now.
You shouldn't have to but that's the only way I've found my phone to work with the z4root app.
Thank you man for your help, rooted and wireless tether is working. Now to find out what else I can do (simply anyway) now that I'm rooted. Themse and stuff sound appealing but with Launcher Pro Plus, not sure what is out there. Will dig around, thanks again!
NP. Root opened a whole new world for you, just be careful what you do. Read twice, execute once or else you'll get to know how to SBF back to stock really well.

What did you use for your Wifi app once rooted? I am still looking for one that does at least wpa encryption, hopefully for free.
I think the first I heard of was wifi tether and it works.. but only unsecure for me. I would prefer something with a password obviously, if you find out, please advise.

Sorry to bud in , I'm new to this and have been reading your posts and others. I have a few questions So, the .apk can be run from the phone with usb power connected to pc? Also the z4root has an unroot option? One more question, no teathering app is needed or not? Hope I don't sound to dumb!
I found the file by doing a simple search, saved it to my pc, used the USB chord to transfer it to my card on my phone. After that, I unplugged the chord and ran it from the phone (seeing how I didn't think I need the PC connection any longer).
As for tethering, I'm using "Wifi Tether" which is working, and tried Barnacle but Wifi Tether seems to work better. Anyone know if wired tethering would be faster? If so, what are you using? VPN-ing for work is SUPER slow via wifi tether.
Sorry for the noobish question. I came from EF 3.6 to the new ComRom. While restoring apps, TiBu won't allow my Wireless Tether app to be resored. I'm guessing it has to do with rom/kernel? It worked with EF3.6 on the same kernel (pbj -50), is this something built into the rom that doesn't allow it? If so, can I make my phone a hotspot without having to use VZW services?
Have you tried reinstalling it?
I know it wont let you download the tether from the market any more.
So here is a direct link from the developer
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
If I'm using pbj -100uv kernel, will vzw be able to pick up tethering? I think I read they have dummy modules now for tethering? Thanks

I am not sure i have not used the tether in a while.
If i get busted i will let ya know!
if you still can't get that working, I have used Barnacle in the past to wifi tether and it works wonderfully
I think it depends on how much data you pull.... if you're using it as your main internet connection then yeah maybe you will get in trouble.... but seriously what will they do? Take away your data? They can't prove you were tethering unless they have your phone in their possession and can see that its rooted and has a tethering program.
and still then, i don't think they can't tell if the data you were pulling at the time was going to a different device...it still goes through the phone, regardless of where the data ends up...
Unless you have your pc locked down pretty tightly, they can get a pretty good idea if you're tethering by looking at the traffic. When was the last time your phone checked in with Windows Update, Steam, etc.?
I'm not saying that they will check those things, just that they could tell if they wanted to. Of course if you're only using your phone to tether an android tablet, they'd have to try a different method.
Ok so I got wireless tethering to work form my rooted Epic 4g to my galaxy tab 10.1 and its pretty cool. I did it with wireless tethering version 3. The only thing is that at first i couldn't get it to work because of the authentication once I turn off the encryption on my Epic it worked perfectly and connected right away. But what I don't get is why it doesn't work with the password if anyone can give me some advise why this is happening it would be cool, Thanks.
Strange, I tether all the time without issue. Should be possible. Are you using an app or built-in settings for tethering.
I got the app version (V3 is the only one that works) . I mean it works,..just not with the password on.
I use wifi tethering with my samsung galaxy phone with tmobile. you should try changing setting in build in tethering app and see if this works. I use 'quick settings' free app from market for quick access to wifi hotspot settings.
I have this problem too, it tethers fine but whenever it comes to things requiring password (like email logins) it rejects the password.
can any one who doesnt have this problem share which software they use for tethering?
how did you get tethering to work? i have tried the wpa_supplicant hack but the wifi drops every 10 seconds. what rom are you running & what supplicant file did you use?
It only works right with wireless tethering app version 3. Apparently if you have the rom that has it built in you shouldnt have any problems.
This is what i used http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
I use bluetooth tethering fron my Win Mobile Treo Pro running wmwifirouter. I got tired of trying to root and do the wpa supplicant thing. Android needs to support adhoc wifi out the box across the board. So ridiculous really by now.
Still Cannot Tether
Ok...so Im still on an older phone ( Droid Eris ) but it's rooted running Gingerbread and the wireless tether v.2.07 works great with my laptop but wont work at all with the Galaxy Tab? I really don't understand this. I have tried everything from leaving it completely open to setting up all the appropriate authentication and access control. I tried the link in the thread for 3.0 and even select the Desire..which I think is the basis of the rom I am on...and just got errors in the log.
Anyone else having these issues? Not sure why it works fine on the laptop but not the tablet?
thanks
I am running v 2.0.7 on a myTouch. When I wireless tether with access control on I can check Gmail, but browser will not get websites. If I turn off AC, then browser works OK.

I think that 2.07 is ad-hoc only and honeycomb doesn't support ad-hoc. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). There are a few threads around here somewhere where you can replace/edit a file that allows ad-hoc support. As to your other question, I use Wifi tether-pre11 and it works without issue. I'll link it to you. Make sure you change "device profile" under settings in the app to correspond with your device. I had troubles with the app until I set the device profile to my device. Depending upon your luck, you may have to try a few different pre-release files on wifi tether 3.0 to find the right one. Like I said, pre11 works great for my Epic, but your device may be different. Just don't use the top one (test2) as I recall seeing that its meant for Samsung devices.

Ok..finally followed the guide here and replaced my wpa_supplicant using the links provided. I have wireless tether v3.0pre14 working with no authentication. I am now going to play with authentication and may back down to pre11 since you had good luck with it. I am surfing solid with no drops...video streaming is fairly slow but thats to be expected I would assume. I am running rooted 10.1 retail 32MB with Verizon Droid Eris rooted running GB 2.3.3.
Many THANKS for the help!
Just to add a data point, I hadn't tried tethering my Tab to my Thunderbolt until I read this thread. I am running Wireless Tether 2.08pre. I set up access control and also enabled wifi encryption. I used it for about 20 minutes without any problems. That includes email, surfing the internet, and YouTube.
I too can tether the GT 10.1 with my HTC Thunderbolt using Wifi Tether, but am having trouble with the Samsung Droid Charge. Anybody get the Charge to tether successfully? TIA!
