Has anyone noticed is pretty much all the Froyo builds (I haven't tried Gingerbread yet) that most apps that have some form of gradient, it is represented by very ugly banding.
The Froyo Call Screen
Xiia Live
These are a few of the programs. I've checked my brothers phone (Galaxy S) and his one doesn't have these issues.
Is there any way to fix these or is this just a limitation?

No, it's not display. when you move widget, this bandig disappear. this issiue affact Gingerbread build to... any idea, how to fix that?
Try Launcher Pro. That got rid of banding issues for me. You don't have to get rid of your current launcher to try it, so there's nothing to lose, and I'd highly recommend it anyway. It's by far my favourite launcher available.
Yeah, about this subject.
I have a desire hd rom, and in sense ui gradients show banding, for the ui and everything. It's most visible on the power control widget.
However, when I move to launcher pro, the same widget shows no banding.
Any way to incorporate that "fix" to simulate less color information and get rid of the banding?

I don't use live wallpapers. And how could that relate? Does a live-wallpaper eat from the number of colors the display can show, or what?

Sorry this will never happen.. Microsoft said the 65k colors was a software limitations in winmo 6.5, however the hardware is capable of 262k colors.. currently we are under a software (read: drivers/libs) limitation. Maybe in time one of the wonderful dev's here will find the solution and rewrite the libs to unlock the full screen capabilities.. time will tell... hope this explains things little bit better as its been discussed numerous time that I know of...

Does anyone have some proof on this? With a lot of users, there are a lot myths regarding our lovely HD2.
Until I see two hd2 phones, with the same graphics displayed, one with and one without banding, I will have a hard time believing this.
I don't know what you want for proof here's mircrosofts site on the hd2 specs http://www.microsoft.com/windowspho...oft.com/windowsphone/en-us/buy/6/default.aspx you will see what I said in the post before yours. As far as android goes you will have to search for it. It was discussed a long time ago with a couple of devs here..

Have you guys noticed that the overall color & brightness on the SGSII is much "darker" than that of the SGS? I have both devices and side by side, the difference is quite significant. I know the contrast is supposed to be higher on the SGSII, but it almost makes some backgrounds & icons look too dark.
Thanks in advance, and look forward to your feedback.

Thanks, where did you read this? My SGS is running Froyo 2.2.1, so that could be why.
I have with me both phones and I have to say the maximum brightness is about the same for both.
But what is very clear is that the sgs screen looks very blue comparing to sgs II.
Also SGS II's brightness can go down further than SGS which is also good considering battery life.
Probably the color change Google did with 2.3.3
Looks horrid on my nexus s. I used kernel with voodoo to change back the colors
I don't have GS2 yet but I read in this forum that under display setting there is 3color profiles to choose from?

This probably explains it. Flesh tones are darker in the icons and it just looks overly contrasted.
Thanks!
Sounds like that's what it is..I would have though Samsung would have changed them back IMO ruins the overall look of the oled Colors don't pop out at you like they should and whites also...dull look
Wait for kernel with voodoo color you can fix its not permanent.

Yeah, tried the background contrast dynamic vs standard vs movie... didn't really do much. Even on full brightness, the colors definitely look over-contrasted on the 9100... especially comparing icons.
I know I'm being picky... but, I still have both phones, and side by side, it's pretty significant.
Coming too from galaxy s and I find the contrast somehow too high..
@cmd512 did u found a solution for this?
To be honest comparing with my old SGS. It looks perfect because next to my S2 it jusy looks b l u e

What about the power saving feature? There is a pretty big difference between max brightness with auto power feature on and off
I never used the captivate at max brightness so the current difference is minimal and my captivate is on a loan for a friend who left his iphone in the cab
much too dark on the dark tones. I'm hoping for a voodoo color to bring back the natural in it . It just sux coming from sgs 1 (with voodoo color also ofc).
Some other things I noticed is that in native gallery an movies app there is an overall sharpness effect. On hd movies it looks ok but on photos it looks really bad.

You can find some measurements I did on the SGSII's display in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124669
The issue you are describing is reflected in the high gamma. The high gamma value is even worse with "auto-adjust screen power" option disengaged.
Basically the colors become dark too fast when for values between 30% and 0% of maximum brightness. The result is picture with black crush and loss of shadow details.
I have already alterted supercurio to this issue and Voodoo color should allow me to come up with calibrated values that avoid or at least mitigate this issue.
that would be very cool. indeed I was waiting for a voodoo color (since I don't think we'll see a voodoo sound on this thing). I saw that Cognition rom has a "voodoo color" on the soon list.
Gentlemen and Ladies ,
I am trying find out if gingerbread update gave us 16 million colors or not. I have tried to look at different pictures and gradient apps, and for me screen on gingerbread looks much better than before.
I have taken 2 pictures comparing my X10i and friends Galaxy S (the X10i is on the left ). To be honest I cannot see the difference (in gradient), apart from the obvious one while comparing LCD and SuperAmoled.
I am running pre-rooted stock GB.
Have you noticed the improvement? eg. while loading XDA app.

just see a x10 woth 1.6 and 2.1 with same pic and same brightness and i am sure X10 with 2.3 will have better quality
The colours are tweaked to be better for 2.3.3 but no, 16mil colours is not available.
And hey, isn't the red-white comparison obvious enough? I can even count the lines.

Well, bear in mind, that my X10i is on the left. The difference is not that obvious for me. I know that quality of my pic is not great but the screen on the RIGHT is SuperAMOLED one.

Dithering is the only way. It costs for slower performance, yet SE did a good job in optimizing the ROM as its still smooth.

Seeing some of the review videos on lollipop, including the Nexus 6 review, EVERYTHING is white on lollipop! The notification drop down, the background for all settings, and even the app drawer!
http://link.tapatalk.com/api/click?...rs.com&subid=cfcd208495d565ef66e7dff9f98764da
Besides being ugly as sin, that's going to be a significant drain on the battery! With the nexus 6 using an amoled display, why would they implement something so counterintuitive? One of the beauties of the moto x is how all the menus, app drawer etc look so elegant in black. On top of saving display energy usage.
I've searched everywhere looking to see if the theme would be customizable and there's nothing to suggest so. Comments?
I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think anyone spends a big amount of time in the notification area, drawer, or in the settings

There is an xposed module to convert white holo to dark, and probably it will convert white material to dark. On LCD white looks better but on AMOLED I prefer dark too
Afaik there will be dark theme for amoled.

Well it doesn't take an engineer to know a light background that requires an amoled screen to display uses more energy than a dark one where the pixels shut off. But that's that I suppose..
I'm running the latest preview on my N5. Yeah, it's white. Battery life? Much improved. Surprisingly so. I've no doubt the improvement in battery life will carry over to the X. I know there isn't a whole lot of room for improvement in performance on the X but it has made a startlingly difference on my N5. Sucks your not a fan of the design but for those of us that like it, it's an amazing upgrade. One I can't wait to experience on my X.
Edit: I understand your concern that the difference in display technologies will make the improvement in battery life mute but I can't imagine white backgrounds making that big a difference.

i am all for opinions, but the OS being white shouldn't "freak" everyone out if you have AMOLED screens. i interpreted your first post wrong and thought you were very upset to the point where you'll rage , hence why i said some need to relax a bit. i still stand by my opinion that i don't think battery is going to go down the drain. remember Project Volta, maybe that'll help a bit too. good discussion :good:

The battery aspect is secondary to me. It just seems counter intuitive to make a nexus device with an amoled screen and widdle down one of the big benefits of it.
My main concern is IMO its ugly as all hell. Material design looks fantastic. But the white folder type backgrounds reallyblook out of place and dated. Of course others may love it. I just hope/wish they give an option for a dark theme..

i am on the fence with it. i agree, white isn't a good color, but idk if black would be a matching color for the home screen. heck, why doesn't Google just allow us to change the background app drawer page to whatever color we want. problem solved . looks like i will just have to endure the white (at least it isn't completely hideous lol)

HDxDaniel discovered this trick on the Note 4, but it works great on the S6 as well. This hidden screen mode gives you accurate colors like basic mode, but cool whites like adaptive mode. It's great for those of us who don't want super saturated colors, but also don't want super warm whites. This screen mode basically makes the S6 screen look like an iPhone or Nexus 5 screen, so if you came from either of those phones, you'll probably like it.

Good find, Thanks for sharing
Looks like it needs to be set again each time you reboot. A little annoying, but not a huge deal.
Interesting!
Works great. Don't understand why this is hidden. I love basic mode but those whites have really bothered me. This new mode seems a bit too bright but I suppose I just need to get use to it.
The white do look better, but I think it makes the colours look washed out.
Nice find. Looks pretty decent.
So it's clear to me after some testing that the colors aren't quite as accurate in this mode as basic mode (reds in particular), but they're much closer to accurate than any other mode apart from basic. I suspect this is because this color profile was designed for a Galaxy Tab AMOLED screen with slightly different characteristics.
I wish we could create our own color profiles. Any devs tried finding the included ones in system or in the kernel code?
