I posted this on another forum... and got some positive feedback.
The update just miraculously increased my battery life tenfold!
I am 7 hours 12 minutes in and I am at 80% (using the battery indicator provided in settings, not by battery widget). I unrooted to install the update (yet it feels like I still have Herver's ROM). Brightness at 50%.
I didn't use the phone that much today (I had class), but I used it inbetween breaks and whatnot. I guess pretty light usage.
I think the update messed with the radio/wifi performance.
What about you guys?
Edit: I know people have gotten 20+ hours with ROMS, but this is without one.
Hopefully ROMS increase the battery life even more.

Hi patelkedar,
I can't speak for everyone, but according to myself and other users that have responded to my post battery life improvement has been absolutely astounding as of this update.
Blah. Sorry for double thread.
Search didn't go so well I guess.
Anyway, seems like everyone has seen major improvement.
Totally agree. My battery life has improved vastly. I came from fresh 0.3 and EvolutionX. I had excellent battery life with both of those roms too. But I unrooted to give htc a shot at stock again and I am happy. Phone has been off charger since 7:30am and it's now 3:05pm, with moderate usage and on wifi i'm at 78%. I don't know what I would do without my EVO. I love this damn device.
My battery life is phenomenal with the stock update. I was one of the ones who took the plunge and lost the ability to root for the time being but its performing so well I really don't care. They made everything run better and the battery was just a bonus.
unevoked not working after 1.4xxx update
I uninstalled the superpermissions and unrevoked before updating. now it will not root obviously. tried to install setcpu and various other programs but will not work. this sucks.. i see no difference in battery life or speed....a lot of people think an update is a good thing sometimes, but it is not. HTC should just release froyo 2.2
Pretty much if you have alot of Facebook friends the battery life savings will be huge with this update, also if you use a Flickr account battery savings will be huge, it seems they fixed the issue with Flickr causing 100% awake time as well but didn't mention it...crossing my fingers anyway, so far haven't run into the issue after resetting up my Flickr Account.
P.S. The update seems very much worth losing root for now as it seems to have fixed many things not metnioned and some functions are way faster now, going to manage applications loads in 2-3 seconds now versus 10-20 before etc... There seem to be alot of fixes not mentioned.
You guys mind posting your settings?
I'm at 9 hours and 40 minutes with exactly 50% battery remaining, but I haven't been using the phone like crazy. Some light web use and decent amount of texting all throughout the day. This is not an improvement from the pre-update era. Pretty much the same

HTC has released it already. It's Sprint now that has to smooth it over and make sure that it is compatible with their stock applications before releasing it to the masses.

Correction: Google has released it already. HTC + Sprint need to smooth it over and make sure that it is compatible with their stock applications before releasing it to the masses.
Phone also all around seems smoother in the sense UI especially. I'm enjoying my EVO again and actually using it as a cell phone now instead of a super-rapid-fire-rom-flashing addiction-device. Sometimes I forget that my cell phone is a cell phone and not a netbook (yet) lol. Cheers to HTC for the update!

Ditto. I don't miss the custom ROMs, honestly. I haven't had a single FC since this ROM launched and the device feels much smoother and faster.
Hi guys,
my first post here, but i spent a lot of time on this forum in the last days stealing information here and there so i would to thank you all for your incredible effort on get this phone better. Now i think it's time to share my thoughts about this smartphone, and ask for some doubts i have.
- Display: the size is awesome, but honestly i found it too much saturated, is there any way to change color saturation? Plus the reading is not that good... the characters, expecially without zoom, look too fuzzy. I have to admit that, imho, readability was better on my old iphone 3g. Someone feels like that? For multimedia, however, this screen is awesome.
- Lags: I can unfortunately notice some random lags while opening application or switching from market to installed apps, even with the oneclick lag fix (512 MB) installed (quadrant reports 2200+ score, if i remember correctly). I was tempted to try the hackheclair cooked rom, any advice about this?
- Battery: another pain. It seems that the phone drains the battery too fast in standby mode. In 6 hours (last night) it drained more than 20% of battery life. This sounds strange to me since many users reported an 1-2% battery drain during night. Please note that i killed all the applications and widgets before leaving the phone in standby. The only one thing that i'm unable to kill is the touchwiz UI, since i use launcherpro as default launcher. Do you know any way to kill the touchwiz UI?
- Memory: here is my biggest doubt. Shouldn't this phone carry 512 MB of RAM? When i check the running services the application reports a total of 256 MB of RAM. Where is the problem?
here are my phone details:
Firmware version JM5
Baseband XXJM3
Oneclick Lagfix applied
Sorry for the huge amount of questions, i heavy used the search engine but i haven't found any solution yet.
thanks

1. There is an app in the dev section to reduce text size, go check it out
2. That's odd, no lag in my end and i've applied One Click lagfix 1.5 .apk, i'm using SamSet's 1.9f ROM though.
3. At the moment there is no way to get rid of the TouchWiz UI but devs are working on a clean ROM, a Cyanogen mod ROM which is basically stock Android. Not too sure about the Battery issue, someone else can shed some light on that, but i do get 1-2% drop at night...
4. Eclair 2.1 does not utilize all of the RAM, and Samsung hasn't chosen to either, so we're all waiting for the final release of Froyo in a few weeks and then hopefully that will utilize all of the RAM, or there will be a workaround.
I was going to ask about the fuzzy text myself. It doesn't always seem to be so but a lot of the time the white titles of apps or text in widgets etc. It looks like it is a little out of focus but all images and coloured text appear pin sharp so far. Very odd.
your coming from an iphone 3g and your complaining about battery life and lag? you taking the piss?
and as for the screen, its better than any screen ive ever seen, i lol'ed when my mate put his iphone4 on full brightness and watched the battery go down in minutes, so dont go there with battery life.
try reading the forums and you'll find out that your problems have got a slightly better with more recent firmwares
sorry still ranting, 'fuzzy letters' roflmao!

Actually the reason for limited memory is not Eclair. The amount of memory available is governed by the kernel and the kernel on the Galaxy S supports the full 512MB. However Samsung creates a large ramdisk on /tempfs (160MB) which explains why reported RAM is around 320MB.
As for the fuzzy fonts, this is the result of using PenTile matrix in the display. Just search for PenTile, there are many threads on these and other forums discussing that.

Is there a fix ?
Not without changing the entire screen.
After a while you get used to it, it's just jarring coming from a regular LCD screen.
Don't worry about the battery, it just needs to be broken in, be sure to charge it fully then use it till the phone shuts off then charge fully 3 or 4 times when you first get it. It took mine a week or 2 but now I get a couple days of fairly heavy use out of it compared to half a day when I first got it.
Another recommendation I will give is to try not to categorize this with another device. I came from a BlackBerry and as much as I hate to admit it, I had some BlackBerry withdrawal issues LOL
I'm now a happy camper and haven't experienced the lag too much. I did experience too much lag on JM5, downgraded to JM2 and lag is gone except for LauncherPro, so tried going back to TwLauncher, was happy, and now finding that ADw is a very good launcher in itself.
Bottom line for me is that I wish there were more apps with the same caliber as the App Store's, but it does what I need and more.

Can anyone in late Eclair version's confirm the tmpfs theory (one way to do it would be to change the settings I guess so that the tmpfs is bigger, 200mb, and see if the ram drops)

It would be better with a non serif font that was a little larger. Surely this is possible?
Look at the the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762116in the "Android Development" section for more details.

I'd bet money this is more than just a breaking in problem. The battery drain doesn't drop by 95% (20%->1%) after a few cycles. (more on this later).

First, let me ask, do you use a task killer other than the touchwiz task manager? Do you let it run at night? If so, stop, this will cause the 20% drain nearly by itself.
Next, look at the apps that you have installed? How many do you have installed? Maybe some are doing some heavy lifting at night when you are sleeping, this is almost definitely a sync and/or app related issue. Download Spare Parts to get more detailed information on your battery drain.
Here's the issue with the battery. First, the easiest way to fix the problem should be juicedefender and ultimatejuice, but it will cost like 1.99 or 2.99. Then set up sync and maybe 3G to go off at these hours.
Cheaper fix: turn sync off at night (I assume this is running, but actually, it might not be, you might just have random data going out). Also, potentially turn 3G data off at night, this actually prevents me from getting any data and that's what I've seen improve my battery life more than anything. ultimatejuice would make this automatic (I think).
I own both the iPhone 4 and SGS, and i agree that black and white text in the iPhone generally looks sharper and more crisp. I had been using the iPhone for about a week before finally being able to acquire the Galaxy S Vibrant off contract, and i really wasn't used to the display for the first day or two. I was surprised because so many people raved about the Super AMOLED screen, yet my eyes were so used to retina display, i was able to notice the pixels on the Galaxy S screen. After the first two days though i got used to it and it looks great to me now. Actually, i had gotten so used to the customizability, as well as the Menu and Back button, and the bigger screen size, the crisper graphics on the iPhone 4 is easily negated.
Anyways, if there is a way to make text look sharper on the SGS that would make it a perfect device for me.
my battery life last very good compared to other phones
i get around a day and half screen brightness full uses for about 5 hours
wifi turned on the entire time and very heavy use
when you first got the phone did you let it drain completely then charge it completely and repeat a few times or do you just plug it in when ever ?
i had the htc legend before and the battery sucked and as for the screen
im very pleased
my bad about the RAM question, must have got mixed up

I've directly compared this screen with the HTC Desire (both AMOLED and SLCD), the HTC HD2 and the iPhone 3G & 4.
For me, its definitely up there, but I kind of agree with you on the text, when zoomed out it's not that great. That said I disagree that the iPhone 3G is better on readability - the SGS definitely is better. It's only not that great when compared with an LCD of an equivalent resolution. The HD2, Desire SLCD and especially iPhone 4 (which is stunningly sharp for text). However, its better than the Desire AMOLED.
For general UI use, I'd put both Desires and the HD2 behind the SGS and iPhone.... on the whole between the SGS and iP4 I'd say it was a draw, with both looking very sharp, clear, and colourful - the SGS is more colourful, and larger, but the iP4 is simply sharper.
For viewing pictures and movies, the SGS is clearly the best, with the best constrast, subjective detail levels and plain looks the most impressive. EVERYONE has commented on how good it looks for this. On the iP4, this is its weakness - its small screen, almost-square aspect ratio and slightly duller colours make it far less impressive looking than any of the others.
I'd rank them as thus:-
=1 - SGS
=1 - iPhone 4
3 - HD2
4 - Desire SLCD
5 - Desire AMOLED

The lags are disappointing IMO. With JM2, and the internal SD fix (cant even remember the name as there are that many fixes now), it was clearly better than stock, however not all animations are smooth, and there is a definite lag at times, seemingly fairly randomly too.
However, I've largely fixed that... some people seem to doubt autokiller, however, I can say it works for me - I set to strict or aggressive for the best results. I don't know why it works, and I can't argue against those that say it makes things worse, on paper at least, but my experience is different, it DEFINITELY helps.
Also, oddly, turning the GUI animations off too has made a significant difference. I still have the Launcher Pro animations (app drawer and pinch home screen view), and the gallery is still animated, but other GUI animations are disabled, and its a lot snappier, and I dont really miss it.
Now the only lag I get is the browser lag as in the link below, but even then Nicolocopus suggests a later firmware may fix it.

Battery - the biggest drain IME is the 3G data connection. Make sure when you're in a place with wifi to leave wifi on over the 3G data connection. Make sure the phone isn't set to send the wifi to sleep (wifi sleep policy IIRC) as the data connection will kick in while the phone is asleep. Other than that, some drain through the course of a day is par for the course.
The other thing is the screen, turning down to minimum brightness is actually more than bright enough for indoor use, and seems to make a difference.
As for Launcherpro / Touchwiz, AFAIK once you set LauncherPro as default and then restart your phone, the home screen portion of Touchwiz (TWLauncher) is no longer running. You wont be able to get rid of TW completely unless a custom Vanilla ROM is made. Not all of it is THAT bad though, really.

Cant comment other than to say, I dont know about this, so many different "opinions" fly around - all I can say is Samsung advertised it as 512mb RAM, so I think they'd be pretty stupid to give you a phone with LESS RAM than advertised - but you never know, I guess.

Aside from all this... "killing all apps and widgets" does nothing to stop the biggest android battery killer, Google sync. Google sync is always running unless you disable it.
If you really want to see how long your phone lasts in stand by, install APNdroid and disable your data connection before you go to sleep. You will have miniscule battery use during the night if you do this.

On the old DJF4 firmware, with 3G and sync on, battery drops by 2% per hour on stand-by. With the new JG4 firmware, it is now 2% drop in 2.5 hours. This is much better compared to my iphone 3GS which loses 10-13% over 7 hours on standby with sync on.

yeah these batteries needs to be drained completely before charging again, else it doesn't hold proper charge
i always push it until the phone turns off (shutdowns completely) itself, then i change the battery pack
i cycle through 3 of them

So, this post is 1/2 "rant" and 1/2 "any ideas", but the JI6 Update has been (in my opinion) a very serious letdown.
First of all, I can't be alone in thinking that the late-September update from Samsung would be a full-blown upgrade to Froyo. Obviously it's not. I guess we'll wait awhile before that's released
Secondly, I'm one of those sorry saps that had the update soft-brick my phone. It took me a few days to get around to the ODIN fix (bumping me back to "stock"), but it was still a royal pain.
Thirdly, I've already seen some issues that I didn't have before. For instance, the phone "froze" on me while sitting at home: no screen response. I had to pull the battery and power up again. Nice!
Finally, the battery life is utterly horrible for me -- and I'm not sure why. Currently at 26% battery life (now 8h 4m since unplugged). 34% of the usage is "display", which has been on for 28m total. 22% is cell standby. 15% is phone idle. 10% is voice calls (2m 10s of that). 8% is the Android System. So on and so forth. Basically, I've *hardly* used my phone today, yet the battery isn't going to last thru to the afternoon. I have 6 active applications, with none of them hitting the CPU at all currently. Best of all? The battery icon looks like I'm about 1/2 full, so evidently Samsung couldn't be bothered to make that icon accurate. I know about the battery icon mods out there (I've used 'em), but I figured Samsung would take care of that.
Sorry for the venting, folks. Is anyone else seeing similar stuff? Any ideas on the lame battery life??
Thanks,
Yip
For me Android 2.1 which samsung released in Galaxy S is exactly like Windows Vista ! No matter how many updates you release for it still will make your phone **** !
The only option is to release a full new OS which is Windows 7 = Froyo !
Better than Windows NT = 1.6
Getting your phone bricked isnt the updates fault, there are hundreds of threads out there and reading just one couldve given you signs of warning.
As for your battery life, I am willing to bet your phone screen is full of widgets. Try limiting those, as well as automated syncing. I get excellent battery life that can EASILY last me the whole day (I actually find myself running avatar/pandora at the end of the night just to drain it so I can recharge the battery).
However, I do agree that the inaccurate battery reading should have been fixed a long time ago (or at least in this update) and that froyo should have been included with the release of this phone.
Your cell standy is too high which means you have things constantly using the cell signal to pull data, thus draining your battery. Right now I'm at 72% with 67% display, 14% voice calls, and 9% cell standby. Been unplugged for 3 and a half hours.
Not great but I'm purposely trying to let it die because I'm reconditioning.

Ha! You may just be right on that. Eclair seems like a fairly lame version of Android, if you ask me. Not horrible, but not great.

"Signs of warning" means nothing, my friend. There are folks who didn't even *root* that got soft-bricked with this update. It was (somehow) poorly handled.
As for your widgets comment, well... you would've lost the bet. I use a single screen, no widgets, no weather stuff, bluetooth off, wifi on (but currently turned off), and nothing extraneous. I run Android about as light & frothy as you can get! I prefer speed over just about everything.
Any other thoughts, though? Perhaps I should re-load Autostarts to see if there's anything strange launching at boot time...

Interesting. Any ideas what would be pinging the cell standby so much? I'm in a high-bandwidth area (full bars), so it's not like the phone is struggling to get signal. I use Gmail and Exchange, but my Exchange sync is set to "hourly", rather than push.
Doesn't seem like I'd need to disable my 3G connectivity. I certainly have never had to before.
You should probably reflash the update. JI6 was great on my phone, no hiccups, no lag, perfect GPS.
Also, you should recalibrate your battery after the update and give it a few days to settle down. I always get horrible battery life after flashing a rom, but after a few cycles I'm back up to 24h+.

Honestly, I wouldn't know unless I knew your full setup. What I will say is that I do have a lot of widgets and apps running that pull from the internet but yet my cell standby isn't as high as yours. I haven't reduced any of my sync intervals either. The 3G radio can really drain battery fast, faster than even the screen so that is a problem.
Also, in JI6, they increased the strength of the radio so it drains even more battery. I am running the JI6 modem however.
You should use something like WatchDog to see what is constantly running and using CPU. That could give you an indicator of problem apps.
Well, I'm disabling some startup items: Visual Voicemail, Telenav, and Daily Briefing -- none of which I use. Maybe that'll help. I don't know...
I was really trying to run "stock" this time around -- not so much fooling and tinkering with things, but it doesn't appear to be paying off for me. Frustrating.

Oh wow, yea definitely you need to disable all of those. That's the first thing I do. I actually uninstall Visual Voicemail, Telenav, Amazon MP3 etc. ALL of those things constantly run for some reason even without you opening them once.
You're not alone. My battery life is terrible as well after the update. I'm losing 4% an hour on standby.
That said, my phone is smooth and working great when I do use it.

Amen to that. Except that the GPS is still unreliable.

I'm having terrible battery life as well.
i'm 24 hours unplugged, sitting at 27%
all stock JI6
Again, if you didn't do so after the update, wipe battery stats and then do a few full drain/charge cycles. My battery life always sucks after flashing a new ROM, but it always goes back to normal given time.

after the update for me, my gps is much better, but i actually have more lag then i had stock before....
so I need to either flash a kernel, lag fix, or a rom with at least one of those.... its kind of frustrating to have lag just from opening or closing a simple app, messages, or call... I honestly cant believe a phone with these hardware specs can have lag just from somthing as simple going into the dialer and exiting out...
Battery life seems to have decreased a little but still getting a good 20+ hours. GPS is a little better with use wireless networks. Lag is an issue now though. Didn't have much before a the update. Hopefully its solved in another update or froyo.

So I applied the update on Tuesday through Mini Kies. First experience with this update, it's been great. My phone seems to faster, really I hardly experience any kind of lag or slowdown (and this is in comparison with my stock vibrant running OCLF). Battery life even seems to be better, but that is probably to do with conditioning. So everything has been good except for the fact that my phone has froze on me TWICE today. I'm thinking it's something to do with the apps though. I was in Layar and it was working for a bit when suddenly, it froze, I didn't have to pull the battery I just held the power button down for a good 5-10 seconds and it restarted. The other time was in a game, which kind of concerns me. I suppose I can reinstall both and see how that goes. I'm thinking it has more to do with the apps possibly being corrupted. The first thing I did was install the 2.2 market on my phone and I ran the update all function on like 15 apps that needed updating. Not a good idea imo, the market went crazy and forced closed a couple of times. I'm not entirely sure what is going but it seems like my phone is only freezing in certain apps. I hope it's not just some random freeze that can happen at anytime, that wouldn't be no good.
You guys complaining about battery life... i would Love to have your times. I got 3 hours and 8 minutes today on a fully charged battery.
Had my Atrix a little over a week and like it a lot.
Not rooted.
I get 2 days on the battery -- about 25% at the end of the second evening. I leave WiFi on and GPS mostly off (turning it on only when I need it). I have set the task manager to shut things down but, of course, various Moto-stuff continues to run. Display on auto brightness. I use it quite a bit for email and web browsing but, I'm sure, much less than others.
A couple of days after I got it, I was driving over the mountains, going in and out of any coverage, and it went black and unresponsive. Seemed like it would vibrate occasionally but I needed to pull the battery to bring it back. No problem like that since, even driving the same road the other direction. That was soon after the upgrade, so maybe it needed to be rebooted again.
Occasionally it becomes unresponsive in the middle of doing something complex in a new app -- like freezing in a context menu. Putting it to sleep with the sleep key and then bringing it back makes it responsive again. Not a real problem but certainly a symptom of immature software -- as expected.
I find the screen to be excellent.
Most recently I was using a BB Bold 9000. This phone, with an Otterbox Commuter, is considerably thinner than the 9000 with an Otterbox on it. I like that. I miss the real BB keyboard but the future is clearly non-physical keyboards (not necessarily screens).
Best: It can be turned up to be the loudest phone I have ever owned. More distortion at top volume (as expected) but having the ability to turn up the ring volume and the phone volume / speakerphone volume is excellent.
Next best: Easily replaceable battery, including excellent approach to the back cover. I wouldn't own a phone that needed to be sent back to the factory when the battery gets tired. My experience on batteries is that they start noticeably downhill as soon as one year. When that happens with this one, I will buy a second battery and have one new battery and one tired battery. I know some people like the iPhone case design but I believe the Atrix case / back cover is a first-class design as well -- just a totally different set of design goals.
The atrix is a really good phone I don't understand why people hate on it so much.
It could be even better with an unlocked bootloader but I mean its still crazy good.
I am wrapping my 4rth complete day. My experiences are pretty darn similar to your own.
So far I get two days per full charge. This is with lots of playing around and downloading of apps and files.
I have had it sort of freeze a couple of times when playing with many newly downloaded apps one after another. But nothing a quick lok and unlock didnt fix.
This phone is unreal fast!
The minute I got my phone dropped of by fed ex, I plugged it in to the wall outlet. When it was 100% charged, I downloaded and intstalled the update. Other than that, I havent installed anything else but apps and widgets.

Do you guys have push mail set up, or are you polling? I'm at ~35% after being unplugged for 9 hours with pretty heavy use. lots of screen on time, live wallpapers, wifi on/off, lots of apps/data downloading, mp3s, etc.
Awesome phone, no complaints at all though!

Email=gmail is essentially default except ringtone=silent. I have always assumed that it is polled but googling it I see that some people say it is push -- surprise to me.
I remember reducing the frequency of data requests but can't find that menu right now...
I often use the phone several times an hour for email, FB, calendar, web. Never used it for mp3 and only once for some YouTube.

I'm not sure either. I ***** and moan about damn near everything and I have no complaints about this device, other than the bootloader. That'd bring a ton of dev interest to the Atrix community but oh well, it does everything else flawlessly. And there isn't even really much I'd use if the devs unlocked the bootloader to be honest.
I'm someone who *****es about everything and if I'm content, I can't see how others can possibly make any complaints.

Gmail is set up as push by default, but Android calls it "sync" instead of push. The setting is pretty hidden in Blur, I can't figure out where to get to it except for the Power Widget I have on my homescreen.
I get a full day, no problem, and end up at about %40+ when I charge it for a few hours in the morning before going to work. I have 3 push e-mail accounts, use WiFi most of the day, and browse the web once in a while. Use Google Reader to get time to pass during those painfully long meetings.
But I've been hard pressed to wear the battery out in a day with my "typical" use. Battery lasts much longer than my Nexus One and leaps longer then the old G1.
Just my $0.02 worth, YMMV.

Yes, indeed. I had a G1 to experiment with some Android development. It's battery depletion rate, even when dark, made it almost useless.
The new Atrix battery is better than my Blackberry Bold 9000 with a one year old battery -- much better than I expected.

I agree, I don't know how well Moto was able to optimize the Tegra 2 chip and various electronics but the 1930 mAh battery surely helped.
This thing gets hot! Just been configuring launcher pro which took around 5 minutes and wasn't data intensive and the back of the phone is really hot. So much that I can smell the plastic heating up! The battery drained real fast during the process too.
Anyone else experiencing this ?
Well that doesn't sound good! I haven't had anything like that. Have you checked the power intake?

Mine got really hot the first day I used it (27/4)...I was just checking out features and installing a few apps. I rebooted it after the battery was fully charged and it's been fine ever since.

I have the exact same problem, it happens especially when I play any games or intensive appliaction. The battery drains and it gets hot next to the camera, I suspect this is where the cpu lives. Do you think its because its rooted? because I rooted it as soon as I got it so I dont know what it was like before.
And as I am away from the uk for the next six weeks I cant even send it back to O2
No nothing to do with root, mine was same before and after, pretty normal to get hot on some demanding apps.

It gets really hot sometimes though, not to the extent of burnt plastic smell but it gets pretty uncomfortable touching around lens at the back.
I've been going through this this morning. It seems that the CPU loves to go up to 1.2GHz even if it doesn't need to be that high (and it stays there). Also there I've also been noticing through ADB shell that their are a few niggles. For example the wi-fi sharing process can start without even being activated.
For example this was a ADB shell top taken while running Cordy downclocked to 800MHz in setcpu. The phone was a tiny bit warm but only by the camera (where the CPU is). Basically, this just shows that if you are playing a game, nothing else is going on so the CPU shouldn't be going up to 1200MHz. And it plays the same as when it isn't underclocked.
I'm currently assisting Pulser with investigating this until he gets his SGS2.

My phone gets very hot at time too...
I also noticed wifi sharing starting up by itself. Yesterday it started by itself and used 10% battery usage even though I had wifi switched off the entire time..

Do you have root and Titanium/MyBackup Pro?
If you do, freeze anything that mentions wifi sharing, unless you are going to use wifi hotspot and kies air a lot.

My phone got so hot that it shut itself down!
since that i have done a complete reset of the phone and started from scratch again....100% better.
The problem as i see it is with all the 'tinkering' that we users do. All the additional launchers etc and widgets that you add really seem to mess the phone up!
My advice is keep the phone as samsung intended it...or at least change very little. You will see far improved battery life and none of the over heating problems.
Just my opinion but its worked for me.

Find the nearest Apple store near you.
The only time i had this was when it waa both charging, in a case and playing a big game...
Im currently chatting, listening to a live stream, charging and posting this, no problem with heat at all..
Perhaps its a problem with some specific phones

that's just not true.
Mine gets hot aswell .. it's random sometimes but usualy with playing games etc. I suspect it has something to do with the samsung drivers/software and not our tinkering.
Bugs bugs bugs...
Mine also gets fairly hot, which might be a little uncomfortable - but that's the sacrifice you make when you get such a high powered device in such a small space.
Well, amount of apps/tinkering/etc has nothing to do with the phone getting got UNLESS an installed app in messing something up.I have heard many such cases when a rogue app made the CPU run at 100% in different phones. If that's the case you have to find and remove the app.I'd suggest OS monitor for finding it.Never happened to me though!
What's more,it's normal for it to get more hot than your average phone,as it carries more power under the hood and has nothing to help it dissipate the generated heat,as it's plastic. The Desire HD does a very good job with managing heat and I have never exceeded 40 C,even when gaming with an overclock at 1.8GHz and performance governor. Not saying the DHD is better, but Samsung wouldn't have left something like this if it would damage the phone. So I tend to believe that it's designed to get hot.
Mine has overheated twice.
Both times, when trying to pair itself automatically to my car kit. The phone got really really hot (i noticed it warming my leg in my jeans pocket) and needed the battery pulling out to reset it. When it started back up, the running temp was nearly 50 degrees (in standby, it runs at about 27)
Hasn't done it since though, just keeping my eye on it!
