After spending some time with a HTC Magic and changing to custom firmwares so I do have some experience with changing firmware etc. But recently I got a Vodafone HTC Legend and I want to debrand it I came across instructions on how to do it but I wanted to know a bit more about the HBOOT, Radio versions etc so I have got my handset details at hand if someone could give me a hand please

I wa planning on debranding to a non-vodafone Legend software as the Vodafone software has a bug with the SMS where it always shows the old messages first and have to scroll to the end.
I have downloaded the following stock RUU ROMs and wanted to know which one to use for here in the UK
RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_2.03.405.3_Radio_47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe
RUU_Legend_hTC_Asia_HK_CHT_2.06.708.2_Radio_47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21_release_136396_signed.exe
RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_2.03.405.3_Radio_47.39.35.09_7. 08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe
That one
Or root and use CM.
That issue with the SMS is really annoying. I am with Vodafone aswell. Is debranding the only way to resolve it?
That or downgrade the Vodafone branded ROM. It's the same process, just use a different RUU...

Just to say I did go and change my ROM from te vodafone branded one to this HTC one, I didn't want to root and try different ROMs as I got myself in a bit of a loop when I had the Magic and couldn't find a stable enough ROM that did what I wanted.

The method I used was
1, create goldcard
2, downgraded to 1.31.405.5
3, upgraded to RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_2.03.405.3_Radio_47.39.35.09_7. 08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe
and now I have the a great ROM without any Vodafone adjustments and NO Vodafone SMS issues.

The SMS bug wasn't introduced by Vodafone, it was HTC. Also, you could've gone straight from whatever ROM you had to RUU_Legend_HTC_WWE_2.03.405.3_Radio_47.39.35.09_7. 08.35.21_release_130330_signed.exe. No need for the 1.31 version in the middle.

Well i've been waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting.... for telus to release the official 2.1 but it seems that that's never going to happen so now I want to root my hero. Since i'm new to rooting my question is which ROM would you guys recommend, I want the one that's the same as the Sense UI 2.1 that would be on the hero if telus wasn't retarded. There are so many ROMs I can't figure out which one is which so if you guys could help it would be appreciated
You can upgrade the Telus Hero to 2.1 without rooting. I did mine the other day.
It will be the unbranded WWE 2.1 ROM

I have not seen this anywhere, do you have a link and just to clarify I have the TELUS hero does it work on this phone.
Once you've installed a recovery rom you can try all the rom's you want. You can switch between then in about 5 minutes or so, so its really easy to try out lots. My guide will allow you to gain root access and install a custom recovery. See my sig for a link.
Kk, Ive been looking more and I think that VillainRom 12 is the best for me anyway

If you've debranded, you can't upgrade...? Is that the issue?
I've read through the big thread and it doesn't really explain much to me
From what can be gathered so far:
The non-branded HTC Legend FroYo up date checks the phones CID to a list that HTC know are debranded. If the CID is not on that list of the update script, it fails the update. Vodafone and other carrier phones that have been de-branded still have the original CID. In my case, mines is something like VODAF001. This is not on the installer scripts list. Hence the update fails even if we have a debranded 2.1 ROM.
We cannot change, yet, the orginal HTC Update Script as the *.zip file has a signature that cannot be re-signed without knowing HTC's private key. Think of it as encryption - the files are visable, however, the phone checks the signature against what it should be for the contained files. If the files are changed (like changing the supported CID's) then the signature does not match and the phone fails to continue with the update.
There's no way way to change your phones CID or re-sign the FroYo installation rom to accept the diffierent CID's.
So far, we're stuck.

Very helpful information there m8 and granted there is no free way to change your phones CID but it is very possible do a quick search for riff box you can change the legend CID with that. Not much use to most people due to it costing £100. Maybe some devs would work on a software CID change, not even sure if it is possible with just software but you never know.
Or what about changin the file in the update to accept your CID then using a goldcard to flash it? Does a goldcard not let you flash unsigned zips?
So corrrect me if I am wrong, I have my Bell Legend Rooted with MCR I also have Rom Manager installed, so, If I edited the froyo update to include my cid, then flashed the rom with Rom Manager, that, as I understand things, should work, since we can flash unsigned roms with Clockwork. Or am I way off base?

Not very well
I'm pretty new to all this anyway, but I thought my techie background would help playing catchup.
Basically, I found my CID of my phone. VODAF001.
Then I went through the official unbranded FroYo rom and replaced supported CID's in the installation script and the android.info text file in the frimware.zip folder with my CID. Resigned the package.
I then rooted my phone (took a few hours - never did it before, but it was a success) then attempted to install the modified and resigned package.
It verifies ok, but I get a Status 7 error. I think this was the same error I had when trying to install the FroYo update from the very start.
Not too happy, but I had to give it a go. Anyone have any other ideas at modifying the original rom file? At least I got the thing to verify after modding it onto a rooted rom. Maybe, just maybe we're 30% there.

At least you ruled out one possibility I think the best way would be to change the phones CID that way you would never have to worry about it again and all updates would work as if it was a sim free phone. I remeber a few years back there was a app for the original iphone that would allow you to change the imei (i know this is illegal in most places) the point is the CID needs the same level access. If we have enough access a dev could probably make an app or script to run to change the phones CID to one of a sim free phone. I have posted the question in the dev section no replys yet.

Agreed. It would be the best solution.
I'm still looking at this script file. I reckon that re-writing the entire thing could also be a possibility - and probably quicker to a solution to the CID problem in the short term.
Trying again taking all the checks out at the begining of the script... see what happens, lol.
Well, different error. Status 4 - whatever that means...
It could be anything. My ROM version currently installed could be too old for the update as well (V.1.xxxx).
Anyway, it's twenty to two here, time for my bed I think...

good luck im sure there is a way as with clockwork mod you can flash unsigned roms so just a case of trying as many ways as possible. As for the CID change im guessing that would be a lot of work and would take a long time but would prevent future problems with new updates ect ect.

I think you are missing the point a legend that was locked to vodafone can not be updated to the wwe. the voda legend has a different cid which is stopping people who debranded there phones from getting the wwe 2.2 update.

Hi, all.
First timer here. Got the wife a Hero for X-mas. Notice it's slow sometimes, so thought I'd upgrade. It's on 1.5 now. I ultimately want to get on Android 2.1. However, in the phone settings info screen, there is no update option. I thought this might be due to the firmware not being up-to-date so was going to start by upgrading that. But I don't know which ROM to use.
I bought the unlocked phone in Switzerland, but it was clearly imported from the UK. I see on the HTC site there are several ROMs which are carrier specific. There seems to be a generic ROM on the bottom of the HTC page which says "ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero" with no specific carrier. This one looks to be the generic ROM, which I should use. Is that the case?
I've tried looking for a general tutorial, but they all also seem to be tied to carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, etc).
Cheers.
Hi Bozo,
firstly do not be tempted to update your firmware to the latest one on the HTC web site, if you do that and also update to the HTC 2.1 ROM, you will not be able to ROOT your Hero without firstly downgrading again.
ROOTing your Hero will allow you to go beyond 2.1 to 2.2 ROMs, these are mostly in development at the moment but I've tried several so far and have settled on Android Version Froyd Villain1.6 (2.2.1) which has been great for several weeks with no crashes and plenty quick.
Hope this helps!
There are plenty of web guides on how to ROOT your Hero also Youtube videos.

Thanks for the reply. Is it the firmware that prevents rooting, the ROM, or both?
I've seen several of the videos on rooting. But again, they often reference a specific carrier model Hero, mostly Sprint.
I'd check out this post. Ignore the stuff about updating RADIO though.

Personally I use Cyanogen 6.1.0 with FlyKernel 12a (applying the FlyKernel CM fix first). Then custom tweaking the Cyanogen setup. If you were UK I'd offer to do it for you

There are many great ROMs to choose from; CM6.1, Froyo 2.2.1 Final (by Elelinux), FroydVillain 1.7.0 My personal preference would be Elelinux's one.

I second that!
I am a flash-aholic and have tried nearly all the 2.3 roms. By far the best is cronos 1.0.1 It is uber fast (faster than any 2.1 I have tried) and has a brilliant forum community, with the dev responding quickly to any bugs.
Have fun!
Why shouldn't he update to the official 2.1 Rom? It is said to be rootable with Universalandroot! (see http://blog.23corner.com/2010/08/30/universal-androot-1-6-2-beta-5/#more-407) So getting the official 2.1 would also be a reasonable step towards more speed!
And I don't see a downside of doing so...

Hi everyone.
I have a two questions about the XTC clip that I can't find an answer to using search.
When I purchased the phone it came with the unrootable hboot and Android 2.2.1.
I have sourced a HTC clip and will be unlocking my Wildfire today. Once unlocked will I need to flash an older version of hboot - to then allow me to install a custom rom? or can I just install a custom rom as soon as it's done?
My second question is has anyone actually done this and can confirm it works?
Thanks!
xtc clip -> s-off ->
downgrade phone with ruu rom -> hboot 0.8 ->
unrEVOked for root ->
costum rom.
The phone is now set to s off!
Know where I can get the Rom to downgrade?

you really need to stop what youre doing. If you already could read, you would already know that you cant download xtc clip. Its an item you BUY on http://www.xtcclip.com and not a piece of software.
And NO it does not help asking the same questions 10 times, and then starting making private messages to people asking the same questions.
Now, start to grow up, use the search buttom and search for help, like the most of us. If you cant do that then I'm not sure you should ever bought a phone like android where you can make so many changes.
If you ever get it rooted, what can we then experience from you ? Questions about how you repair it from the disasters you have applied it ?
So start searching...... the answers are there including those you ask all the time. They have been answered.

No need of downgrade or Unrevoked if already S-OFF
Sorry to "disappoint" you guys but there is no need to downgrade & Unrevoked at all, if the smart is set to S-OFF.
Explanation is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12188132&postcount=15
NOTE: The method is successfully tested on several smarts.
If you want to suck the MAX of Wildfire try CyanogenMod 7 RC2 (need to reflash the radio to fix GPS), or better wait a while for stable release - coming soon.

Well I'm planning to buy the HTC Desire Z and would like to be able to root and flash roms. I've read up on some stuff here and other places and know about CID lock, S-OFF and stuff. And as i understand you use Visionary to temp root then use gFree or something.
But what i'm more concerned about is the HTC rom 1.72. They say the methods dont work and you have to downgrade. So that 1.72 was released december 23rd, is there any newer roms since then that also could be on the phone when i get it? And if so, can i still downgrade?
Thanks in advance,
Kris
check around. essentially you can downgrade to 1.34 then get a custom ROM like Virtuous or CM7

Well Sense is ok but i'm not a true fan of it... I'm more into super fast froyo roms like theFroyoMod for Motorola Milestone. Is there anything like that? Or do you recommend a Gingerbread rom over Froyo. I've always found 2.3 to be bogged down and much less snappy than 2.2.
I'll give virtuous a try though as i still haven't found a rom i'll stick with
I have an HTC Desire Z branded with vodafone australia the build number is 1.85.861.3 also running HTC Sence v3 i think. i think its very similar to yours and i wanted to find out what method you used to root yours coz all the methods on this forum dnt seem to work with this version. What method did you use, did you downgarde yours first and have to create a goldcard to install the older firmware? thanx
Just to let you know I had mine on vodafone, 1.72 and S-on, just rooted it yesterday, all good. using temp root to downgrade and then perm root. hope this helps

i used this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
initially i had the exact same error as u, what I was not doing after the step 5 once you get the # symbol write this
Code:
/data/local/tmp/misc_version -s 1.33.405.5
it shoud work fine then
I followed the guide over @ CyanogenMod (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_Z:_Rooting) last week, and it worked like a charm. Brand new Desire Z that had 1.8something on it.
Btw my firmware version is 1.85 and you cant root this one using Visionary or other known methods for 1.72

When i type in that code in it says 'Patching and backing up partition 17...
'Error opening backup file'.
Is it supposed to say that? what does this code do? and that version number 1.33.405.5. why do we have to write it?
Finally worked
Thanx guys i managed to resolve the issue, managed to downgrade my HTC Desire Z, Vodafone branded firmware build 1.85
