OK if you get this error you may need to restart you phone and your android system will recognise the .apk. I get the same error and restarting works fine. Give it a try and it should work..
Still not working after restart, any special file explorer I may need to use ?

there are many app installers you can get from android market, any of theme should work..Also make sure the .apk file has a size e.g. 201k, as some file have a 0.0k size and will not work.
Thanks for the help just dropped the file in the SDcard/android apps folders, it installs now. Thanks

You must unmount the SD-Card in the Settings - then Download you want in the Market and if the download finished and installed mount the SD-Card again

A workaround not a complete fix but... When you get that problem again go to your download folder using any explorer application, like ES FILE EXPLORER, order the list by date added and you will find your appin the 1st position. Just install it- from there-. This fix work for the 100% downloaded application case but not installed
i think when you unmount the sd and install the apk it goes to the data.img in android folder, because this is acting as internal memory on android build... correct me if im wrong... but it works for me all the time and the aps are on sd...

The download folder is on the root of your SD-CARD
Thanks for the tip bro
OK, I tried to update the phone 6 times now.
The normal way always ended with "update not installed".
I tried with the Recovery Mode ... also no luck.
I reset the phone to factory data and tried to update again... also no luck.
It always ended after checking "/system/app/BackupAssistanceClient.apk" ... installation aborted.
The zip file is ok, no problems....
Any hint for me?
These instructions can help and more info about the update.

Edit: Link problem
Edit 2: Link been fix
I guess you uninstalled the program BackupAssistanceClient.apk. We must throw back the program. You can take them out of the old firmware http://www.mediafire.com/?4450xiqnxngzq.
You'll need two programs: SBF-ReCalc 1.2.9.1 and Diskinternals Linux_Reader
First you understand the firmware to the code groups. You will need a group number 39.
The second program allows you to get out of the code of the folder system.
To do this:
1. Install and run the prog.
2. Click the menu item Drivers Mount Image.
3. Were 39 group, and click Mount. In the program window will appear system (Linux native Volume 1) with all its contents.
4. Select the desired item and right-click choose Save, and then follow the instructions.
5. That's all you have files you need.

Motostigr, you are my hero
You were right. I deleted a few programs and that was the reason for the failed update.
As most of the time the failure is sitting in front of the pc/phone
Thank you!

Try opening the APK with WinRAR and replacing the image then installing without resigning. If you're still having issues with installing it clear the app data and uninstall then try reinstalling. If it's already installed on your phone and you're trying to reinstall with a different signature it'll error out every time.
Uninstall the old app first...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Premium App
logcat will tell you why it fails. In this case however it's due to signing. All regular packages (non-system) need to be resigned, this also means you have to uninstall the original app as they'll have different signatures.

Open apk with 7zip and navigate to the picture you want to replace. Open Windows explorer and navigate to the folder containing your picture and drag it into 7zip. It will ask you if you want to modify this and say yes. It will now resave the zip file with your replacement picture. That's it, there's NOTHING more to it than that. I do it everyday when I am working on a ROM.
I am having a problem with the package installer on my Nexus 7. (Wi-Fi, 32 GB) I think I may have done something to it accidentally while browsing through the system files. I did click to install the installer itself out of curiosity, though, but I don't know if that could have any adverse effects on anything. I cannot install any apps, whether they're from the Play Store or an APK through a file explorer. I get error 406 when I try to download anything from the Play Store. (Except when I tried to update ES File Explorer. That worked fine... Every other app that I've tried will not update/ download.) When I try to install an APK, I get a message like, "There is no program to open this file." I had just rooted my Nexus after having it for nearly a year with the Motochopper root exploit, so the bootloader is still locked. I could still install apps, though, until after my first reboot. Could anybody identify the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you might have removed packageinstaller.apk thats in the system. you can fix it by getting the correct packageinstaller.apk from the interent and move it to the correct /system/app path and apply CORRECT permissions for it

It's still there. I think installing it with itself out of curiosity is what messed it up. It now shows up in the installed apps menu in Settings.

It doesn't seem that I am able to change permissions. I'm just going to back everything up and either flash a stock rom or another good rom. Thank you very much for your help anyways.
Same problem..
What do you mean about "changing permissions"? If you mean to change the file properties to -rw-r-r- then that didn't worked for me .. pls help!
