idea for the few left or stuck with the hero..

K before u flame me. or say search or whatever..this is just an idea I had and though I would post and see how people felt bout it.
since most devs and theme makers left for the evo..things are slowing down on the hero front..
My idea is lets find out who is staying etc..( devs and themers ) and work on a single rom that will make all others ( evo nexus etc ) jealous or envy our hero..etc.. this might be a pipe dream.. but i figured wth right..with so many of of left im sure we could scrape together and find a happy medium on a single rom that we all will like to use etc..
the thing is we have so many nice roms to choose from.. but have to search hi and low to find what will work with them etc..
or maybe clean up the area so to speak and have what roms work with what themes and such..
I just hate that the hero will be a thing of the past before its time..
maybe we can work together pic one rom..or two..and and just work on those and theme for for them..etc..
I mean does that make sense? If we let it go it will fragment etc..and we will lose touch etc..
So who likes this idea? or better yet who has some suggestions related etc..
I just dont want the hero section to die..when u have smartphones like the vogue and tp/diamond tp2 etc still being dev'd on and such..
What do u guys think!!! and please be nice.. lol just trying to help and get us remaining hero peps to unite..
I'm not a dev, nor a themer, but if I could get myself into learning how to theme, then I'm down. I visit this site several times a day, and admire all the awesome work that everyone has done, maybe answer a few questions that I can answer, etc.
I've had my Hero since January, and stumbled to this site sometime in late March and I've been hooked since. My dad just bought the EVO, so I've been following the EVO threads, but I still have my Hero roots.
Having one solid thing is the way of the iPhone. I beleive that fragmentation is actually helping Android, solely because there are so many different things to choose from.
Think about it, most people are just going to see it as
"Oh, the Hero only has one ROM, but then Evo has six"
People are still coming in and asking "Does X work in this ROM" "What ROM is the best ROM" and all that nonsense (Pun intended).
TL;DR people rarely read the first post.

Best rom for my epic 4g?

Hey guys, hoping you guys can give some insight to a noob on this. I am looking to install a good rom on my phone. I'm leaning how to do this, but what I am looking for is speed and functionality. Themes are not that important, but would be cool. I do have the DK28 and is rooted, so I might need a good video to show me how to rom this phone properly. But as far as rom's go, I'm looking for one that is a really good rom.
Thanks in advance
Mike
Welcome to Rooting your phone. As far as the best ROM? There is no one best ROM, everyone has a different preference and outlook on speed. Any of the latest EXT4 ROMs will probably suit you though. Here is a link that will help you pretty much with everything you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
They have guides on how to ROOT, ROM, THEME and other things. It has the links to kernels, roms, themes all there. Hope that helps, and good luck.

Cool thanks. Are there any video's that show how these are installed? I saw some on youtube, but they were not that great of quality, and was unable to really get a good view of how to do it.
Thanks again
Videos
These videos don't show how they are installed but give a nice overview of some of the most popular current roms. I found them really useful.

Thanks viper. I'm looking though them now. Just trying to find a video on how to install a rom. I have picked one out and looking for instruction on how t install. I don't want to brick the phone since it's my company phone.
I did it. Viper rom installed. Was not too hard. Found a good video for it. Thanks for the help everyone.

The fun part is thanks to nandroid backups you can try out a ton of roms (I flash a new one every couple of days, now I'm back at dl18 playing the waiting game)
From what i've seen most roms share all of the major fixes and use similar tweaks and optimizations that they borrow from other devs... and the only notable difference i've seen between them is theme and how much they include in the rom extras wise (apps, live wallpapers, etc).
Viper rom has a lot of updates but I wasnt too much of a fan of the overall look of it
Mammons bonsai rom is lovely and I <3 it
Midnight Rom is excellent too and one of the best themes in my opinion, though if i remember correctly he does away with Twiz launcher and uses launcher pro(could be mistaken though i'm really tired and have used too many roms)
Epic Experience was the first rom that I flashed and works great, but I was mainly playing with the others lately since they have more frequent updates
Quantum Rom - daemon is brilliant and am looking forward to his next release
Supernova - I did try it out but I honestly don't remember what features it had
Nebula - Tried this out too, supposed to be more stable/straight forward rom for stable professional people who dont want inflated quadrant scores or flashy live wallpapers (I might be quoting a different rom, if so i apologize)
Syndicate Rom - Awesome as well but its not for dk28 xD
Overall all the roms are amazing the only differences REALLY notable to me is that some use AOSP lockscreen by default, some use TWiz lock/launcher, some use ADW... launcher pro... but all of that is changeable with a flashable zip/apk...I tend to prefer mammon and quantum rom nowadays since iirc mammon made the call log fix and gps fix and daemon is doing all this ext4/cwm work and they seem to be leading up the race with innovation and knowledge (not saying others arent knowledgeable... i know nothing of developing i'm just guessing here)
EDIT: forgot to mention, only reason im not on dk28 right now is that personally I have minor bugs with it such as the one where you call somebody and it doesnt ring or make any sound but it actually calls them, and some other minor issues. I figured i'd wait for official froyo to drop and continue testing out roms when I get bored
Oh and theres also cyanogen mod which is sexy and amazing but is prebeta and buggy (signal bars not working, MMS is broken, etc)
Although I agree that he could have been nicer about it, these posts absolutely do not belong in the development forum. Questions about "which rom is best for me?" Definitely belong in general. The reason some people (myself included) aren't often very nice about it is becase it is increasingly becoming a problem. The op really should take the time to read the stickies before cluttering up the dev forum. Everyone should.
Also, calling someone a jackass- even if they are being one- almost never shows them the error of their ways.

Thanks to both of you. I as a beginner in this didn't know where to post. Thanks for the lessons.
Mike
P.S If I do change rom's do I have to flash everytime and lose my apps and info? I save contacts on the SD card, but will stick with viper rom if I have to flash the phone for other roms. It get's kind of time consuming.

It is best to get titanium backup (from the market) that way u can back up your apps and you can use Backup to Gmail (also from the market) to backup contacts, call log, and messages. That makes flashing different roms a lot easier. (In my opinion)

This does not belong here. Follow the forum rules. Even this little rom question belongs on General!

Aside from titanium (which i never really used much, guess I should try it out as it can make backups every night while you sleep if you set it to)
You can also make a NANDroid backup via rom manager//clockwork mod which when you restore will restore everything down to cache to be the same. same texts in your inbox even xD.
EDIT: Also if you have your phone linked to a google account when you go through the setup wizard (on some roms) it auto downloads the apps you had installed before from the market as well as contacts, etc. But if you want an instant restore to the same settings/wifi/etc then I prefer nandroid (idk if titanium does all that I think it just backups apps)
also note that along with most roms you can customize them to your liking. you can change the boot animations (given they use a kernel that allows it... if the rom has a custom boot animation already it'd work by flashign one in CWM), theme, battery look, keyboard, launch options, lockscreen. You could always just get a not-flashy basic rom that incorporates the basic fixes that people want (faster gps lock/5mb mms/call log fix) and theme it all yourself in the themes and apps subforum. The gingerbread theme is nice and nova has a list of boot animations and battery mods in his supernova rom page :3. If you're interested in that I'd say go for epic experience as I'm partial to it and he includes an "extras" page with downloads to all that hes removed such as the live wallpapers, samsung widgets, etc.

New to the SGSII(coming from Motorola Atrix)

Hey what's up yall, i just got my SGSII today and i'm loving it!!! I loved my atrix too and the forum over there was very helpful since it's release, sometimes a lil aggrivating the way they treat noobs that just got the phone(but every forum has a few people like that) But i'm looking forward to rooting and flashing a rom asap(and no i'm not a noob, i know how to use the search button lol) but if anybody has any suggestions on roms or whatever, please share.....
Batista or CM7 are good starts.
If you want looks and heavily themed the sensation is a good one.

so let's talk about roms and theming...

This may sound odd.. but it popped up in my head while driving home.
I have been messing around a lot lately with theming, and also playing with the UOT Kitchen... This got me thinking for us less "able" members here..
Is it ethically okay to use someone elses rom (Ie- CM7) as a baseband... and theme it to your liking? then add in the app's you like and whatever you might like in the package and upload it as a different "rom"?
Thanks, and sorry for the odd question
There's a specific post approaching this issue, see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1317929
PS: If you want to theme CM7, the best way to do so is with a theme chooser theme No need to re-release roms or anything, just post your theme apk for people to download.

as long as you quote your sources (let everyone know that you used CM7 as a base, and who created all the apps you put in there, etc. etc.) then it's perfectly fine. just be sure to quote every single source you used.
also, don't make it the habit of just releasing themed versions of CM7 or the dev forum will get full of the same ROM with a different look. i'm pretty sure that's the whole reason CM7 comes with a theme engine that makes theming it super easy.
but on the note of your question, just be sure to give credit where credit is due and no one should have a problem with it.
Wow- That stinks... Wish I would have realized that thread pertained to my question.. Sorry about that.
& regarding my theme- It's such a half assed bork job that I'd be embarrassed to post it... Let me do a couple more run's and I hope to have something nice brewed up for you guys
Thank you, and sorry again.
Also- I wasent really thinking to use CM7 Specifically.. I was just using it as an example.
damn, theming is fun! It's a lot of redundant stuff... but fun!

Request Wallpapers For Evolution Rom Return From Themers!!!

Whats up fellas/gals. Im somewhat new to xda and havent posted all that much on here so im not sure how many of you know who the hell i am. I developed in the old days for the nexus 7 and galaxy nexus. Finally got the g2 and got the itch to start building a rom again! I am asking for any of you talented themers out there to make some high quality Evolution wallpapers. I am asking because wallpaper is not my fortai. All credit will go towards you of course for the wallpapers! Please do not get hurt if I happen to not pick your wallpaper for the rom, I am a pretty picky guy when it comes to neatness. I am looking for some clean looking wallpapers like the rom OSE features or GUMMY rom! Much appretiated and thanks for reading!!!
Mods you can move this to general if I happened to have posted this in the wrong section. I figured I would get more traffic through here...
