Phone uses 50% in standby for 11 hours - Epic 4G General

I leave my phone in the car while I'm in the police academy and that's from 1000-2100, so it's about 11 hours. I might go check emails during lunch for about 10 mins but that's it.
by the end of the 11 hours, the battery is at about 50-60%
is that normal?
oh, tested it with noLED app, the battery was at 28%, so it uses about 20-30 more battery

Info that would be nice to have so others can help... Are you running a completely stock rom and kernel? What kind of signal strength do you get there? What is your TWS? Do you perform the 'Airplane Mode' fix on each boot? Do you kill the DRM service each boot? It would also help to have details like what rom and kernel you are running if not stock.
My best battery life that I can recall occured when running the Epic Experience Rom 1.1.06 and the Andromeda 1.4.0 kernel. When at home with WiFi on, 0% TWS (solid signal from the tower), I would lose about 1-2% per hour with no use, and I can recall having it last for almost 2 full days with light usage.
Another question, if your leaving it in your car anyway, why dont you just turn it off? Then it wont use any of your battery.
Anyway, in my limited experience, 5% per hour on a completely stock phone is about normal, and the only way I was able to increase it even a little was to install Juice Defender and have it kill any data access when the screen was off. This was before I rooted my phone, and learned anything about the 'Airplane Mode' fix (hold power button and turn on Airplane mode for about 10 seconds, then turn it back off. This reduces your TWS (TimeWithoutSignal) percentage) and killing the DRM service through the 'Settings->Applications->Running Services'

I lose under a percent an hour when the phone is sitting idle. Also, if I had to leave the phone for 11 hours, I would put it into airplane mode, or rather have juicedefender do it automatically. That would mean I would be losing under a half percent an hour.

That sounds about right from my perspective. Everyone that complains about the Epic having terrible battery life doesn't know how to manage their phone settings.
Personally, I use my phone often at work (ie., games, texts, and emails) and after 12.5 hours my phone probably has 60%-75% battery left. I do this by placing my phone in airplane mode and turning on my wifi. Using Google Voice and my gmail app I get all the information I want / need. On top of that I play games and surf the internet on my phone.
Anyway, I find your results typical from my experiences.

Wlan when standby and battery when not using

Does enabling wifi when on standby drains battery, even if you're not connected?
I made some registry changes yesterday and I also enabled this with wifi, and I woke up with 20% less battery, normal for me is 7-10%.
I can't figure it out what I did wrong except if wifi is the problem?
yes if your wifi is on it will consume more battery. check if your mobile is constantly checking for new mails or updating the weather. disable them if you want your battery to last longer.

I would like to disagree completely. I've already ran rigorous test just to prove if it does or not on MY HD2. And let me tell you that it does not. YMMV.
It eats just as much battery as if you're using it but without the display on. So in any case, it eats less because the backlight remains off.
Using DsE V6.5 ROM. I got my battery to drain 3% every 12-15 minutes leaving Weather to update every 30 minutes and Send/Recieve new Mail every 5 minutes, Have pandora playing in the background and leaving web browsers opened, google maps activate.
During my test, I recorded the time and the % drop. I started at 9AM @100% and Dropped to around 3:30PM to 7% battery left. Now remember, this is a constant run without turning the device off, never turning wifi off and without exiting any windows. Also, Ive set my device to dim the screen after 1 minute and let it blackout after 2 minutes. Just take note that every time I picked up my phone to change a pandora station or read a new email, I never push the "end" key to let the screen go blank instantly. I let it do its full 2 minutes thing and let it go blank automatically.
This is just so I remain very rigorous!
This has helped me understand a lot about my battery and how much I can pull it out during a full days or usage.
I noticed that My battery can last up to 6.5 hours of basically, NON-STOP usage. Just image if I turned off wifi and only needed it the moment I wanted to check if i had new mail, etc. My battery would last ALL DAY.
FYI, under normal use, my battery is around 55-65% by the end of the day under moderate use.
I have updates every 6 hours for weather, but I can see it connects to 3g when is the time. This is not the problem.
The problem started yesterday/today when I made some registry changes...I enabled 24bpp colors and I turned vsinc off.
I am not connected to wlan, it is turned off, I only enabled the option "enable when in standby" if I sometimes need it when phone goes in stand by.
I am asking...does enabling ENABLE WIFI IN STAND BY eats battery when NOT USING WLAN AT ALL?
Thanks

[Battery Stats] I didn't bring my phone to work today

I had everything turned off. No email, no sync, no wifi, no gps, nothing. I fully charged the battery and unplugged it before I left. Display was never turned on. I wanted to see a completely isolated battery test. The only applications I had active according to my task manager was Launcher Pro.
Time on 10 hours 20 minutes
Battery life left 60%
Battery used 40%
Cell Standby - 40%
Phone Idle - 30%
Android System 20%
Calls (1 missed call) 5%
Display 3%
Maps 2% (Why does maps show up?)
Again this is with absolutely 0 use or syncing going on. Left phone at home, turned on and immediately checked stats when I got back from work.
According to this small test I can't even last a day on a full charge even if I left it completely alone.
Thoughts?

In 1.5 day of standby with every radio off and no sim, my phone only lost about 5% with stock JI6.
I think it is a cool idea. I find that 5% usage for one missed call is very bad. I have really suspected that voice calls kill this battery and that seems to add evidence. 5% for a missed call? That is messed up.
I think this is the aspect of battery life that doesn't get addressed enough: drain during standby. Of course everyone expects to lose some power while the display is on and syncing/other processes are running--but what about when the phone is left untouched? Here are 3 ideas:
3g is a notorious battery drain even when the phone is not being used--use 2g instead.
Freeze or uninstall media hub and other running processes that attempt to run/connect to servers in the background. I removed dmservice, media hub, and all drm processes and this seemed to be helpful.
Use a custom rom--these appear to hold power in standby better than stock roms do.

Cell Standby indicates that there is an activity that polls something from the network.
if you are so concerned about what it might be, you can see when and how much data is being used by going to your TMO account online and check for the data usage - one of the good features TMO put in place is actually tell you when your phone connected to get what amount of data over the data connection, does not tell you what it was doing though.
Yeah, something is going very wrong in your phone. When my phone is on standby with just 2G on it drains less than 1% per hour. I would definitely recommend getting rid of the drm service and media hub (and Daily Briefing). I also use Autostarts to keep all kinds of random programs from starting at inappropriate times (Really Slacker, does your app need to launch every time the time zone changes?)

According to Samsung the phone should last 450 hours in standby mode...
Anyway, yeah, I'd be curious to see the same test done with 2g only.

I wonder if Samsung's definition of "standby mode" is what the rest of us call "off".
I've never had any kind of batt life with this phone...charge everday overnight...start work at 8, use here and there for navi (around 10 mins max, maybe 2x a day) about 30 min avg talk...and mp3 player...get home by 4 and always at 30% or (most often ) less...have had stock/ bionix roms, never changed, no matter what build....it's pathetic..called tmo, they said there are no known issues with batt on this phone...wow...do a google search on it..anyways, they are sending out a new batt..I hope I just got a bad one...seems very random tho, some ppl have all radios on ,screen all the way up and get 10+ hrs...if i left my screen on (say navi on) for more then an hour straight I'd be out of battery..very weird..praying new batt is better...

Does it seem like youre just not getting the battery life you should from your phone? Do all your other friends keep going while you slowly putter into a shutdown? Well pout no more! Simply follow these steps to clear your batter information from the phone and your phone will act better then new! :)
1. Charge phone completely, leave plugged into power
2. Boot into recovery
3. Wipe battery stats
4. Reboot to normal
5. Remove power cable
6. Drain that sucker all the way
7. Recharge fully
8. Rejoice!"
I turned my phone off today. Then I left the house. When I got back the battery was glad to see me. Seriously, I've read just about everyone and almost started my own battery disturbance thread. I've come up with a new thought at least for me. I don't care any more. I have electricity. I have a spare battery and a charger. If my phone wants to last a whole day. Yay! If I use it more because of some game with angry birds or cards or dice, great. I've reached that Mark Twain moment somewhat tweaked when he said,
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.”
I'll tweak it with the last 27% of battery left in my feeble vibrant to:
"battery is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it won't matter".
Enough already I say! Lets spare the air. Batteries are meant to be used
Back to the regular reading of all the battery threads now.
I think I had the same issue as you. Cell standby was the biggest drain. When you tap on that, do you see 50% time without signal? If that's the case, this seems to be a bug in Android which was somehow introduced in JI6. The best solution I've found so far is after every boot to put your phone in flight mode for a few seconds and back. This fixes the radio glitch, your time without signal should go down way under 50%, and battery drain should stop. Hope that helps.
You should recondition your battery:
Fully charge
Reboot into recovery wipe battery information
Reboot into OS
Unplug power cable
Let battery FULLY drain (do not plug in until fully dead)
FULLY charge battery (do not unplug until fully charged)
This reconditioning should be done after every ROM flash.

What's the best battery settings for stock rom?

I keep seeing all these threads about how people are getting rediculous hours on 1 charge, but mostly all the post I see are people with rooted phones. What are the best ways to increase battery live on a epic with stock rom?
Those crazy battery life u see is ppl putting their phone in airplane mode and with very limited use. They don't mean anything. But some tips to improve batt life are keep screen brightness down, turn off 4g when not in use, maybe use juice defender to automatically turn off 3g whenever the screen is off.
Sent from my Epic 4G
I'm 100% stock, unrooted.
Turned off Auto-Sync
Brightness set to auto
Wifi on, since I'm usually within range of work or home wifi
Swapped Wifi policy to never drop when asleep. (prevents wifi from dropping and going to 3g)
Killed that absolutely stupid DRM process
Activate Airplane mode after initial boot and turn it back off. (Due to Samsung bug)
Have any program that syncs set to sync at 2hr intervals
My battery life with heavy usage will last over 6 hours (games, txts, browsing, app downloading). With moderate usage it usually can go 15 hours (sans app downloading), and with light usage I've pushed it 2 days (games and txts).
Mind you I don't use the browser much since 90% of my day is in front a PC, Mon-Fri.
I'm 100% stock, no root as well.
1.Train your battery!
when I got my phone I did at least 3 full charge/complete discharge cycles
2.I do not use any Task Killers or JuiceDefender (tried and uninstalled for ineffectiveness), I just use built in tool to monitor running programs and kill off the one I do not need. I prefer not to install application that do not have clean exit programmed. I do use JuicePlotter to monitor battery charge/discharge.
3. After each reboot toggle airplane mode on and off(Airplane trick)
4. Go to Menu/Settings/Applications/Running Services and shut down all services that not needed (DRM, MediaHub, etc)
5. Set brightness to minimal possible value (works fine for me), not auto set - when I need it on the street just slide the finger across the status bar and raise the level as needed.
6. All 4G, GPS, Wi-Fi are off and on only when needed. I use Wi-Fi home, 4G at work, rest of the places 3G or whatever is available. My data/sync is always on. Wi-Fi set to never sleep.
7. I have Roaming Guard off since my house in the very poor reception area so it's roaming most of the time but there is wi-fi for data.
8. Use dark background/wallpaper (I use Star Wars light speed jump live wallpaper)
IMO the battery life is depend on the type of use. From my 2 month experience the following battery killer tasks are:
1.Streaming video, music with screen on (will discharge the battery even when plugged in.
1a.Streaming music with screen off.
2. I haven't tried tethering (hot spot mode) but would think it's a killer as well
3. Browsing web, especially over 3G
4. Roaming
5. Game playing.
6. GPS
Obviously you can have a bad (defective) battery, but it's likely less then 1%.
Good luck!
nikon120 - What do you consider moderate? I consider my usage to be moderate, but I can't go 15hrs. Yesterday after fully charging the phone from mid point, my phone completely died after 5hrs, with very light usuage as most of that time I was busy. Today with light to moderate usage, my phone is indicating that it needs to be charged at roughly hr 10.
stud_muffler - I'm not familair with this airplane trick you're referring to. Can you enlighten me?
I'm doing most of the things suggested in this post, but I still don't think the battery usage I'm getting is up to par. The battery life on my Epic is much worse then what I was getting on my WinMo TP2, with roughly the same amount of usage.

how long your battery used? if >2-year heavy use, could well be battery degrade. no solution except for buying a new one. (symptom: battery charge sudden drop, like 50% -> 20%).

For me battery drops can sometimes happen when I don't charge battery to 100% - so it's good idea to always charge to full.
First of all you should check if your battery is going into deep sleep mode. You can do that by installing Bettery Battery Stats, and leaving your phone idle with the screen off for some time. You should read the forum post to understand how it works. If after leaving your phone on "stand-by" you realize that it's not going into Deep Sleep mode, then you should find out what is keeping your phone awake.
I used to have the same situation as you, and it turned out that I had set the WiFi Sleep Policy in Viber to override the Roms setting, and consequently leaving my WiFi always on (which prevents your phone from sleeping). After fixing the issue in Viber my phone now turns WiFi off after 15 minutes of leaving my phone idle.
Now unless your battery is actually dying on you, I'm sure you can get a better battery life. I am using Tasker to program my phone to turn WiFi off when I turn off my screen, and then turn it on for 1 minute every 15 minutes during the day, and at nights it does the same thing but with an interval of 1 hour and half. There are apps in the Play Store that do this too, I've tried these both, and they work as they should, and they can even control your Data connection
Green power
Deep Sleep Battery Saver
All in all I've been losing an average of 1.7% during the day, and 0.7% and 1.2% per night. My battery currently lasts about 2 days on one charge. This is all assuming it is actually your WiFi that's preventing your phone from sleeping, I just figured I'd share my experience in case it is in fact that; the important thing being that you could probably get the same results as I have (or even better, considering your battery isn't busted) if your phone is actually going into Deep Sleep.

Verizon S7 Edge Battery Life Terrible

And there's nothing I can do about it. I only have a gear s2 connected at all times and wifi and mobile data off whenever possible. Before I leave to the gym battery is at 44%. After the car ride there it drops one percent. I unlock the phone, connect my powerbeats, and open youtube and there go another 5%. After a YouTube video there is 7% drain. About a 10 minute video too. Leaving the gym and hour later and I see a maybe 20% battery loss. I don't know how people with regular S7s get 4-5 hours SOT because I get only 3.5 maximum. I bought the edge looking for better battery life but it's practically no different than my S5. If anyone knows a magic trick to this, I need to know now because this is extremely annoying.
IF you got the device from an official retailer, just return and get a new replacement. Losing 7% watching a 10' video is not right even with max brightness. You can fix the standby drain by using Forcedoze (which helped reduce my standby drain by 50% to about 1% every 2 hours). 3.5 hours SOT is terrible even with max brightness. Just get a replacement please. It's not worth the time and frustration.
IF you don't have the option of getting a replacement. Forcedoze can help with the standby drain. Factory reset, set up normally (personally, I just turn off bluetooth NFC location and turn them on when needed), and hope that your terrible screen on time is software related.

Do you think it might be my location by any chance? Maybe the service in my area causes this drain. I also have gps on because of my gear s2 but I can turn that off and see what happens. GSAM tells me the in the past 30 minutes the drain rate is 15% per hour. I browsed the Internet a bit and have been using it the whole time. I'll try to also do a full battery drain test on geekbench with full brightness and see what it tells me.

It's a good possibility. I have a fairly weak signal where I am most of the day and only get about 4-5 hours of SOT. I have all radios off except WiFi and data when needed. Still with my usage I only charge every 2 to 3 days. I don't get the drain like you do from watching youtube though.
My battery life also sucks. I barely use my phone during the day and it almost dead when I go to sleep. Most of the day I am connected to wifi between my work or home. My old htc m8 one could last 40 hours. I think part of the problem is because I do not have root on this phone. I kind of regret switching because I cannot get root. I cannot use applications to adjust cpu or control my wifi, data and to turn off apps from starting automatically. I think tonight I am going to try and calibrate my battery.
I had horrible battery life after taking the 2 OTAs. BetterBatteryStats would not report the device going into deep sleep at all and I was losing about 10% per hour on standby. I did a Factory Data Reset and all the problems cleared away. BBS is reporting deep sleep after about 5 minutes of the display going dark. I have Wifi, data, Bluetooth, and high-accuracy Location services turned on at all times. I lose about 2.5% per hour now with AOD turned on on standby.
Guess my advice would be to due a FDR after every OTA....
Guys, I had terrible battery life when I first got the phone. Off the charger at 6am, under 20% by 5pm... Follow my steps below and I bet your battery will do a 180 and be very nice. Mine gets me 35-40+ hours on a charge.
Disable the bloat apps you don't want in app manager.
Turn off Google usage and diagnostics reporting for the Google app, and if you use the Google keyboard, there too. This and the next one were the biggest improvements by far.
Turn off Samsung "Send Security Reports," and in the same place, turn off auto-update Samsung security updates.
Turn off device/Bluetooth/WiFi scanning.
Set keep WiFi on during sleep to while charging.
In permissions, I turned off location for any app I didn't think needed it. I went from 30+ to about 15. If an app requires location to work, you will get a popup warning when disabling location for it.
Lastly, I did a Restrict Background Data on several apps I didn't think needed it.
My phone started dozing and the battery drain dropped way out.
I keep AOD and Bluetooth on at all times and connected to my smartwatch all day, and my car about an hours a day.
Hope this helps! Apparently out of the box the S7/Edge battery life is terrible...

It's ridiculous one has to do all this to get closer to acceptable battery life.
Google and SEC should be ashamed of themselves!
It's not just VZW devices either. AT&T are just as bad.
I've given up on trying to get acceptable standby drain and just let the device live on a wireless charger.

You need to turn off all radios when you go to sleep for the device to enter deep sleep. I had the same problem and when I started turning off wifi and mobile data for the night GSAM reported deep sleep and I was only losing 3% per night.
