Common CPU Problems w/ OC - Vibrant General

Is it just me but w/ the release of the 1.6GHz and other kernels, people with the OC sensitive CPU in the Vibrant kinda stand out as the losers in the Vibrant community because we cant experience the same increase in performance like everyone else can. Like the Cool kids and the nerds. when i got this phone i was excited to see OC for this phone coming from a MyTouch watching Nexus one users jiz everywhere because of CM love from a million different CM6 roms and OC kernels past 1.0Ghz but when i get a 1GHz phone, i cant even experience it...SMDH .... to me, it takes the fun out of having my vibrant rooted. I kno i aint by myself on this?

Right there with you, bro

you know...honestly people...you should buy a phone for what it is stock
if you can't live with the stock phone you bought without modding it, or you're going to have severe depression issues if yours can't be pushed to the max as far as other Vibrants...you seriously need a life for the latter, pick a new phone for the former.

i bought this phone because of its potential

anyway.... I see you got bionix installed.
Try fusion, Viral has tried the 1.6gthingamajigger using the Fusion ROM.
see if that works!

ive installed ASOP-like 1.4 w/ jac kernel...I like this.. jus gonna chill w/ this until someone comes to our rescue w/ a stable OC kernel even i can use.

Realize that it is clocked to a stock 1 Ghz because during testing the chip yields had a certain number of chips fail at speeds over that, but do not fail at 1 Ghz. That's why they are clocked at 1 Ghz. Some will work and some won't. Same for desktop CPUs and GPUs. If they never failed at 1.2 Ghz, the processor would be clocked to 1.2 Ghz. Same for 1.4 or 1.6 Ghz.

What potential is that? To over clock? That is luck of the draw... If you don't like your luck and must get a chip that overclock well, sell yours and get another. But no guarantee that that one will overclock either.
That'd like buying a lotto ticket to pay your mortgage...

How can i run my Phone STABLE at 1.26 GHZ using SetCPU or some other program?

So, I can only run my phone at a MAX 1.3 GHZ without it crashing..
How can I run it at 1.26 without it crashing?
I am running Kings Kernel #11CFS
with Virus Sense Rom RC3
Is there some setting I need to chang? or use a different kernel..
why would you want too ? i would imagine that would kill the battery and make the phone very warm ?
Not all CPU's are created equal. If yours is crashing a lot at that frequency, chances are that yours will almost never run stable.
you could try using conservative scaling but it still probably wont be stable. most evo's cannot handle it.
Heat is your enemy. I suggest you try my hardware mod to really crank up the freq.
Overclocking
I just rooted my phone and I downloaded setcpu and I want to overclock it, but the max that i get is 998. And was wondering how can i get it at 1.267GHz. Im new to the android. Can someone please help.
The stock kernel does not allow over clocking, you'll have to try out a kernel from the development section, I recommend the newest Kingz.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!

Download a kernel that supports OC.
I tinkered around with OC'ing a few months ago I could never get it over 10xx without crashing. I just learned to live without setcpu.
I agree with voodoo there's really no benefit, unless you like pulling the battery. I didn't notice any better performance or speed while overclocking.

Indeedj this will cause ecen more battery drainage and additional heat that might damage the phone

Mine is running very stable at 1.26Ghz and great battery life. Running BakedSnack 1.8 along with kernel #6. I'm using Overclock Widget instead of SetCpu as SetCpu was causing lagging response on my EVO.
I dont need 1.26 GHZ
I just wanted to Know why my phone wasnt running stable at 1.26 even thoug it said it was capable of doing it..

I agree with most ppl in that this phone is wicked fast as it is and its just not worth the risk/reward
HTC EVO4G A.K.A. Usain Bolt
Linpack: 34-35 MFLOPS Avg
Quadrant: 1500+
Kernel: King's #6 BFS
FPS2D: 54-55 FPS
ROM: Fresh 3.3
PRI: 1.77
I totally agree that heat is the undesired side effect of the overclocking of the Evo. I had been running mine at 1.152MHz and the noticed a couple of different colored spots on the screen especially during boot up with the bright white splash screen. This was caused by the excess heat from the CPU. I had my screen replaced due to dust under the glass and it is perfect, so no more overclocking for me.

Can only overclock to 1.3 GHZ anymore it freezes

any suggestions...... ive been seeing people get 1.5 GHZ sooo i kinda feel bad lol. And b4 anyone says anything i know 1.3 GHZ isnt bad lol
Not every phone can overclock the same. I personally wouldn't keep the phone over 1.2 ghz. Other than fooling around there isn't much reason to clock it higher.

Check out the android development section. There is a VERY lengthy thread about this stuff.
Every phone is diff I can't overclock more than 1.3 also
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Yep just like everyone says.....it's all built differently. I personally would keep mines at 1Ghz or 1.1Ghz. It's fast enough at 800MHz. Maybe occasionally just to make myself feel good, I'd run 1.2Ghz. Just imagine what 800MHz or 1GHz will be like when a optimized custom ROM can be installed....Stupid FAST!!
1.46 Ghz here since the OC was discovered..
No problem yet, battery life almost never changed, and I'm loving it.
As others have said, it varies. Not every processor will overclock the same, which is why these are sold at a slower speed than possible.
My friend and I bought the same PC processors at the same time. Mine overclocks to 3.6ghz, and I could only get 3.2ghz with his. Nothing is perfectly identical

I call bs on overclocking

I call bs on overclocking...
Now my phone locks up at 1.2 and I find it hard to believe that people are going above that. I realize that some phones can do 1.2 but to hear 1.6 OR even around that seems bs. That's a big difference in chip manufacturing if the case. Iv tried the latest kernels and voltage mods and still not stable. So it just seems that 1.3 is believable .. but higher than that is just not believable
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I was able to run with the Manhattan project kernel back when it was around. I think it was doing 1.4 if im not mistaken. Its not bs, some phones can handle it and some cant.
Moved to General as not development.
Please do not make threads like this in the development forum. Development forum is ONLY for development, not for discussion, debate or opinion.
AND maybe you should read the 1.6 thread...
All cpu's are not created equal. It's the same thing on computers. You can buy 2 chips with same stepping on the same day, and it's quite common that 1 will outperform the other by some distance.
Having said that, it would appear that some kernels are to blame for the lockups. I've seen people say they get no lock ups at 1.2 on JAX's kernel, yet they do on others at 1.2.
show me the money...
yea chips might be different but you cant make me believe that you are able to get 500 mhz more then my chip with the same voltage i am running and it be stable..
like i said 100-200 mhz believable.. 1.6 and be stable without voltage going up bs..
Yea.... why are you still not running 1.4? I can also over clock my pc to 3.0 ghz but its not going to run right unless my environment can support it.
I see them back at 1.2ghz
People should really read the op from the 1.6 thread before they call bs on it. It was done to test the limits and they found it.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Well, you get 1.2ghz, and I get no overclock whatsoever. There really *is* that much variance. Anything below min spec gets binned for some slower use or trashcanned. Anything OVER spec simply gets pushed out along with the rest unless there's a demand for over-spec chips. It's always been that way with CPU's even back to the 70s.
It's also very kernel specific. I could do jac's 1.2, and Manhattan 1.6 all day long without a hiccup, but project core, and all of eugenes froyo kernels cause major instability and some wont even get past initial bootup.
Shrug.

Not all CPU's created equal, I have one of these Vibrants that cannot run overclocked, the phone shuts down immediately before I can even unlock it upon boot.
My friend has pretty much the same setup on his Vibrant, and it overclocks with no issues.
We even did the full back to JFD -> Bionix Fusion 1.1 w/ Core kernel flash, no additional apps loaded, his is stable, mine shuts down immediately upon full boot.
Undervolting is the bigger issue for most people I believe.

Desire hd 1.99 ghz kernel..

Guys have you seen a kernel for the desire hd with oc up to 1.99 ghz ?
Damm thats oc man....you think it can be ported to our phones ?

Probably not. Kernel ports are EXTREMELY difficult.

Man that would be Kick Ass if we could get it to work!!
With 1.85 ghz kernels available, is .14 ghz that important to you?
Faster is faster I suppose. I would be afraid of frying chips from excessive heat at that point. I think 1.8ghz is pushing it a bit.
Actually the sky is the limit with the 2nd generation snapdragons. I could have gone beyond 2.0 GHz if I wanted to. I didn't want people to come crying here because my kernel bricked their phones I may release beyond 2 GHz versions if people are that crazy with speed.

But that would require stock voltage since 2.0GHz is kind of highish. The G2 and its scorpion gets to 2.0GHz which is odd since it defaults at 800MHz. I would love to see a 2.0 or 1.9 variants though, but stability should be the main focus.

LMAO...No, I think their "literally turn my phone into a lightsaber" app is lagging a bit.
Kidding aside, we all love a strong kernel! Faux, you're top notch, and I appreciate the hard work you do...would love to maybe see some kernel love for the fusion sense 3.0 rom...*cough cough*
It's true that people get really crazy with their speed. A guy i know at my college OC'd his thunderbolt to 3.1ghz at one point.
I agree... I am on the fusion ROM now and it is Kick A$$. We would Love to see a BIG Kernal for that. I sure would Donate for the Project.
I took my 3.0 ghz wolfdale cpu to 4.5 ghz on air, so I understand the bug, but the fun in that was all of the work it required, including lapping the cpu and heatsink, making a perfectly balanced connection, modding the case to have excellent airflow, playing with voltages and stress-testing, dialing back and trying something new, etc. When it came down to it and everything was done, i just sat there, looked at my faster computer and realized there was no actual difference in anything I did on the PC, so I pulled back to a moderate O/C and haven't touched it since. I mean it's great when you can calculate Pi out the the millionth decimal in seconds flat, but evidently that doesn't have much value in day to day terms. Most of my nerd moments end up like that, the whole journey before destination thing...

He lied. First of all the cpu freq for mCPU for each SoC's are diff. Alot of things effects the range when clocking it as no chips are created equal thus even on same chip you might have problem
He simply LIED. First of all not all chips are created equal even on same phone model as its depends on the defect rate of the chips wafer. Second point is the mCPU scale freq for diff SoC's never match each others based on rom/kernel. Third is why the hell would anyone want to OC mCPU to 3ghz? as 1.8ghz for our model is extreme as is but 1024mhz native is more than enough. This is bad news as you are just going to fry it since no cooling solution.
I'm sure you can figure it out it you want to blow your phone up...
Or cook an egg on the back.
Lol ur friend sounds like a fibber.
