OK, I admit it, I went back to Sense UI - EVO 4G General

Ok, I admit it, I went back from Cyanogen 6.0 to a Fresh Sense UI to update my PRI and get another taste of the 4G speed. I have no intention of this being a hater, fanboy post but wow, the Sense UI environment just does not compare to Cyanogen. Cyanogen is just so much cleaner, faster and user friendly. And now with the RC for 6.1, it is simply amazing. I felt like the phone was lagging a bit under the Sense UI and felt over wrought with some silly interfaces.
I felt obligated to post this to 1. congratulate and thank Team Douche for an amazing AOSP that i never really fully appreciated until I regressed and 2. sincerely invite all of you Sense users to give Cyanogen a try. Again, I am no Android fan boy, just a guy who stumbled into XDA, thought this Rooting thing sounded interesting and gave Cyanogen a try. Now I am a very satisfied user.
I know the lack of 4G is a big deal and I do miss the speed but hopefully this will be resolved soon and when it is, I think Android will take a major step forward again.

Meh, glad you found what you like. I use a rom that had 4g and I've removed sense from it. I don't lag at all. And yes, I've run CM6, installed 3 different times. It offers nothing that a 4g rom with sense removed does. Well, besides the obvious: no 4g, horrible picture gallery, worse battery on average.
To each their own.

/shrug i dont think anyone really cares im sure most flash roms like changing socks

You are probably right, no one cares but as Pao23 said "to each their own." And although XDA users are flash happy most Android users are still stock. I am just sharing an experience that might give someone some confidence in finding an option that might work better for them.

I wish I could run Cyanogen full time... But I use my phone for work email (exchange) and the aosp email client is horrible compared to the sense version. You can't even view the GAL on aosp, just a background lookup and resolve. On sense I can pull up the GAL and call a person directly through the company directory. I also love the copy paste features of sense as well. Full support for email tagging, way better calendar and meeting handling just to name a few. I guess I just expect a higher level of exchange support because of my prior WM experience and I know I am likely in the minority for big time exchange use.
Until someone figures out how to at least port the email over, or the aosp email client gets a huge makeover I'm stuck on sense.

I loved cyanogen... only reason I went back to sense is because of how much better the contact app is organized. I couldn't figure it out on aosp... but with sense I can manually sync my contacts rather than let the fb app try to get my contacts. That and other features of the sense contacts app. Wish i could figure it out

I didn't think about it, but I use my company directory through exchange quite often a well. I manage construction so am in the field generally.

The Cyanogen RC 6.1 released today is supposed to contain enhancements to the mail client but to what extent I don't know as I don't use it. I can see how that could be a big limiting factor for you guys.

I think 4G is just a total battery waster, so I never even used it when I was on a Sense ROM. In my book, if you want to know the difference between a Sense ROM and CM6.1, just take LauncherPro and hit "restart LP" in the settings. In CM6.1 it takes about a second for it to completely load up. On Sense ROMs it takes anywhere from 6-10 seconds for everything to completely load. This is just unacceptable to me.

Not to mention sitting here at my desk at work, using my phone as wifi so the IT guys can't see what Roms/kernals I download, I'm putting out 4g wifi rather then crappy Sprint 1mb/s 3g wifi.
Install said sense rom, remove sense, done.

What all widgets just so I know and can try to imitate? I run 5x5 too.

Nevermind, you pay for too much stuff.
As a question though, I've never found myself restarting my LP before now, why do you do it often enough to actually influence your Rom choice?

Judging from the comment I highlighted in bold by you; I'll presume you're running a Vanilla ROM. Meaning, you have none of the HTC stuff; no Roise, no widgets, etc.
Actually, what ROM are you running?
Theres always beautiful widgets but I don't think they look all that great.

If you're using SushiROM, like I suggested in an earlier thread you started, you've got a ROM that has stripped sense out. The HTC Widgets rely on sense.
Personally, I hate Sense. It's slow and clunky and just not that amazing. But that's my opinion.
As someone stated above, Beautiful widgets is great. I use it. I think it's, like, $2 on the market. The PureWidgets series is great, too. They're another paid widget, but I use the weather and grid calendar widgets. They work great!
I hope this helps
EDIT:
I did some searching, and I came up with this:
http://slideme.org/application/wf-clock-widget
It looks a lot like the HTC Clock widget, so it might work. It's free, too. I've never tried it, so for all I know, it could be buggy as hell or not even work at all... but, hey... it's a start
The only reason I am sticking with sense is for the People, Music and Mail widgets, does anyone know if there are similar non-sense widgets. The only mail widgets I found on the market had bad ratings, so I didnt try them.

The AOSP music app is pretty top-notch. I've never tried it, but there are a lot of people who like Mixzer (I think that's what it's called)

I just installed freshtoast v2.0 (the one released to donaters on 5/9/10), and now all my HTC widgets have disappeared. No clock, no calendar, etc. Is there a way to get them back? Getting Sense UI Widgets on Nexus One, Like Bookmarks

Hey guys. I'm wondering if it's possible to get some of the very nice looking HTC Sense Widgets on our Stock, or Vanilla 2.2 Phones. I have a N1 running CM6.1 Nightly and I'd love some Sense UI Widgets.
Yes I have Beautiful Widgets, and that is nice. But I'm looking for stuff like there Bookmarks Widget, and there Calls or Call Log, and the People Widget, or things like those. Is this possible? I love the bookmarks widget on Sense, that is one of the main things I want. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Impossible to get the actual widgets on stock android...however you can download LauncherPro and pay for the plus features and it comes with a slew of sense style widgets (resizable too so IMO better)
and for ADW Launcher there are free and paid widgets u can download from the market which work well with it.
I wonder why we can't extract the widgets from Sense.. that sucks.
and I've never gave Launcher Pro an honest try, so maybe I should check it out. but ADW is integrated into CM6. I've looked on the market. There doesn't seem to be any good Bookmark Widgets out so that might be a no go. But thanks!
the launcher pro plus is the way to go...yes it isn't free but it is well worth it. LauncherPro itself doesn't support widgets, the paid version does though it is available thru the app and not thru the market.
just the extra's. I'll be looking into it now I guess. Thanks!

This is because HTC widgets rely on large chunks of HTC framework, "melted" among AOSP code. The way to go would be to backport some of it back into AOSP, AND largely modify the widgets to make them not rely as much on Sense. Highly impractical.
If I recall correctly, adding HTC widgets was tried by people online on ADW on HTC phones, and it wouldn't work because you cannot use them outside of the HTC Sense launcher.
For the call log, get the last call widget. Tapping the left will open up the whole call log, and on the right you can make a direct call back.
For the people widget, give picture dial a try.
picture dial is the way to go...

Launcher Pro
I'm running completely stock and Launcher Pro is the best all in one solution I've found. I paid for the full version have not regretted it. There are several very useful Sense-like widgets (Bookmarks, Calendar, Facebook, Twitter, Friends [which is all your social networking feeds in one], Messaging, People [which is your contacts]). It also allows your homescreens to rotate to landscape, gives you a customizable and scrollable dock. I also find that it scrolls much more smoothly than the stock launcher.
Well worth the purchase price.
Dialer one is almost an exact replica of the sense dialer FWIW and free.

And he's currently rewriting the code from scratch so it should be a different beast altogether in the next version.

HTC Sense features?

Hi again everyone!
This may sound like a stupid question, but I've been reading up on a lot of apps that disables the HTC Sense features (ie. Launcher Pro, Cyanogen ROM, etc).
I'm asking myself this question: What are the features of HTC Sense? What will we be missing if it's disabled? Smooth scrolling? Animations?
I read up on the HTC website but of course it's more marketing than informative *duh!*
Thanks for being patient with me

You'll get smoother animations and transitions between apps, but you can't use any HTC Sense widgets.
Thanks for the response zervic and Product F(RED)!
I just read the link that you provided. In summary, HTC Sense is just a smooth-scrolling, animated user-interface comprising of several applications & widgets for the Android, such as:
# Friend Stream
# Camera
# Gallery (Pictures)
# Calculator
# Calendar
# Desk Clock
# Contacts
# Music (player and library)
# Weather
etc.
That's it! Wonder what the big deal is…
Will anyone convince me I do not want to lose Sense at all?

The two main things that work in Sense but not in CM6/AOSP are Flash Lite and FM Radio. Flash Lite is HTC's proprietary "lite" version of Flash that will allow you to view some of the more basic types of Flash on webpages (but not things like streaming videos or music). It's kind of pointless though because that basically means the only thing you can view are Flash ads... lol. Personally I haven't missed it.
Anyway, there's no need to "convince" you. You should just do a Nandroid backup then install CM6. If you don't like it, just load the backup and you're right back where you started like nothing happened.

I have been meaning to ask this question but I don't want to open another thread so I will ask here.
I am leaning towards making the jump to CM6, but I keep seeing that it has no Flash Lite or Flash 10.
Can you elaborate on that a little more? Does that affect my web browser?
I had the Tilt and that didn't have Flash and web browsing sucked. Will I have to deal with that again? Thanks.

On Sense you can temporary disable Flash Lite through the browser settings, so if you're curious to see what it'd be like, just disable Flash Lite and see if it causes any problems for the sites you usually visit. Personally I don't think you'll miss it.
AOSP > Sense
Freedom > conformity
Sense is just HTCs way of making android their own. Using a rom without sense means you can make android your own instead of the way HTC thinks you want it. Samsung and Motorola both have their own versions as well (I'm sure others do too, but those are the only two I've others I've used. I personality prefer the extra customization you can achieve with an ASOP based rom. If that's not important then theres no reason not to stick with the stock sense ui.

Not exactly. Adobe has designed Flash for Android to rely on an instruction set that is not supported by the Aria's processor. It would still be possible for Adobe to create another version of Flash that WOULD work on Aria in the future (for the sake of expanding Flash support to more devices), although to date they haven't really given any indication that they would do that. I just wanted to point out that there is some hope still, although I wouldn't call myself optimistic.

Yes, but the Aria's processor isn't fast enough for smooth playback anyways.
I had a stock Aria with Sense for several months and loved every bit of it...then I flashed Cyongenmod and I love it even more. Somethings arent as "pretty" as with sense but you get the added benefit of making it look the way you want. The level of customization is incredible and I dont miss Sense at all.
For those that miss the Sense weather/clock on the home screen, Just Google "Fancy Widget"...its exactly the same thing but without the cool weather animation thing that you get after unlocking from the lock screen. I think it was pulled from the market, but you can still find it. I have the apk if you cant.
Just do what others have said. Nandroid back up your current ROM, flash a new one and see how you like it for a few weeks. If you dont, go back to your old ROM. Its super easy.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I tested out Sense without flash and the only site I really go to (a NBA forum) had problems because they usually post youtube videos of dunks or other plays embedded in the threads and they wouldn't show up. That sucks.
But I have seen so many really amazing customizations in the Home Screens thread that I will probably go to CM6. One more final on Monday and then I can get to messing around with my phone.
I just love what people have done with Clockr. And the sense weather animations are cool so I will miss those.
I guess you're right "Product F(RED)". It took me awhile to find it and I would like to provide it to anyone who is looking, but I see what you're saying and maybe its not a good idea. On another note, I did a little bit of research and the guys who made the one that was pulled have made a new one (still called Fancy Widget) that is on the market. It looks pretty nice and has a lot of features, but does not have the "flip clock" design that I like so much.

CyanogenMod vs MIUI

Why is Cyanogen the most widely discussed/used rom rather than MIUI? I just tried MIUI for the first time yesterday and im pretty impressed in about every way. It comes with an integrated way to customize every part of the rom, with lots of options. It comes with a firewall and a task killer, even if you probably dont need them. You can change the effect when moving between home screens. Customize the toggles in the status bar. It comes with a built in blacklist. Even the settings are more extensive. I mean the music app even find the lyrics to the song your listening to!
Is it just because it looks like the iphone, so you disregard it even though it has more features integrated more seamlessly?
Why?
CyanogenMod is supported on more devices thanks to a large dev team, faster (Android version) update pace & its a generally clean ROM with great codec support & other little tweaks that make a big difference. It has been around longer.
MIUI is a unique rom made by a great team of devs in China. It offers a great set of feature & a new experience. It requires a little more outside help (as far as U.S. users go) to get it going on other devices, not to mention the translation changes & hardware support. Hasn't been around as long.
Its not really a matter of it reminds me of ___, better than, as good or it does __ ___ __. That Cyanogen gets more viral commentary .vs any ROM.
MIUI is closed source. CyanogenMod is open source. Thats reason enough for a lot more discussion in here.
Besides... MIUI incorporated some good stuff from iPhone, but also some really crap things , like removing the app drawer. IMO
Also, where the hell is 4G? They've had it "in the works" for months and nothing. When they actually make it a fully-functioning EVO rom that makes use of the hardware I paid for, then I'll switch back to MIUI.

I echo these same sentiments as the same reason why I haven't fully adopted MIUI. Beautiful launcher and Core apps is really how I think about it (and IMHO a little too iOS).
Cyanogen is Awesome, but MIUI is a dream. To me aleast, don't have no 4g in San Diego so who cares. I put all my app's in a folder and named it "app drawer" as for closed source, oh well. I'm not a developer by a long shot, so I don't care. It's all about preference and mine is MIUI. I'm hooked like a bad drug.

Use Alt Drawer for your app drawer. I use it with ADW EX, even though there's already an app drawer. I'm running MIUI, but missed ADW so I switched back. It's really good and fits well with MIUI. Find an app drawer icon that you like and put it into your theme mtz with the package name for Alt Drawer & put it on your dock. Or do what I do and use an app like Button Shortcut to open it when you long-press the search button.
If you don't know how to change the icon, pm me and I'll do it for you. It's actually a bit faster & easier to do it than it is to explain it.

I prefer my android to look like android, especially aosp.

Also, where the hell is 4G? They've had it "in the works" for months and nothing. When they actually make it a fully-functioning EVO rom that makes use of the hardware I paid for, then I'll switch back to MIUI.

That has been answered 10,000 times. There will NEVER be 4G for MIUI unless the Chinese get 4G in Shanghai or they release the source code. If a tlittle bit of a faster data connection is enough to keep you away from the most innovative ROM out there, then buh bye.... Trust me, no one using MIUI will miss you
Also, other than no App drawer, MIUI is nothing like Iphone. I'm sick of that comparison, too.
Considering a large number of users use LPP, ADW EX and GO, not many are missing an app drawer, anyhow.
^Agree with Hipkat, MIUI is not to be compared to IOS. Only thing tht is happening to it is the 4G and that is subject to the chinese opening their source. As far as everything else, I had MIUI and is eye candy. One of the best made for androids phones.

Folders FTW!
The question shouldn't be "which is better" but rather which fits you best. Both roms are excellent but one might keep you away from other due to the way it operates. Cm has tons of extras including adw launcher, 4G, etc which makes it the way it is.
While miui has the "iphone" look (yes it looks like iPhone so get it over it) and has that awesome customization market that let's you change almost anything on the phone.
I personally don't use either due to the fact that both have some kinks to work out but that doesn't stop me from trying both out every now and then

Yah! Folders, FTW!!
Hey Nick where did u get that background
HTC EVO 4G
App drawer is a matter of preference. I'd rather organize my apps in different home screens or folders rather than be lumped into one massive list and hunt thru them. I have no idea why the app drawer is considered a great feature.
And if you really want it, there's an app on XDA which will do it.
In everything else, MIUI is leagues beyond other rom's. Contacts, dialer, sms, backup, theming, notifications, monitoring - all of these are best in class, and to even get close you have to get a bunch of extra apps in other rom's.
It may be inspired by iOS but it has more features than iOS or Android, is updated weekly, and runs faster.
Cyanogenmod never really did it for me. Granted I haven't tried it on the Evo 4G yet (used to have a Hero CDMA). All the extra stuff they added just never really grabbed me and the performance just never seemed as good as pure AOSP.
I really love MIUI. It's super fast and being able to customize everything really is nice. Plus since I'm an update junkie I love that there's new stuff every week.
I'm in Reno, NV, so there's no 4G so I don't really care about that. As for the app drawer, I don't see what the big deal is. Once I have the apps I use on my home screens I hardly every go into the app drawer.
I don't think one is better than another it just really comes down to preference.
I love them both and bounce between both. They both are great rom's based off a great os, so really do you have to pick? Just enjoy the freedom of being able to have a choice and not stuck with what your given... just my two cents...

4G is my main reason that I haven't tried MIUI.
And in my area, I do get 4G and its significantly faster. There are lots of sprint users where I live, but most of them are on 3G it seems, so bandwidth on 4G is much more available. Now, its not that much faster than 3G if you are in a good unsaturated 3G area, but I am not. The 3G around here is very saturated.
So for me, 4G isn't a little bit faster, its way faster, so don't be quick to judge. If it weren't for lack 4G, I would definitely try it. I don't mind the iPhone inspiration that some others have issues with and I have heard very good things about MIUI, but lack of 4G really is a dealbreaker for me.

Sense Alternatives

I don't know if ICS or JB with Sense will ever come to the DHD. But the reason I have never stuck with another ROM other than Android Revolution HD is because I end up missing Sense.
When people do change to a non-Sense ROM (haha, nonsense), what are you using for:
Friendstream alternative. With FS, I get both my twitter and FB feeds in one convenient widget. And I like how when a tweet has a link, if I click on the tweet, I can read the tweet and link all within FS. I don't get that with Android Pro Widget or Launcher Pro widget.
Calendar. The HTC calendar is so clean looking. I like the monthly view on a whole screen.
SMS. I know there are alternatives but many look so cartoony, not the clean interface of the HTC version.
But probably Friendstream is the big one. What are people doing?
Thanks.

DHD will be getting official ICS before the end of August
Good to see you're ditching Sense (less eyecandy: more RAM free & better performance), not sure if we have something like FS, maybe rip it from a sense ROM and install it?
Sent from my Desire HD using Swype beta for Android!
How to get a Friendstream apk? Would that install on any rooted phone?
Also, I forgot to mention a key app. Mail. The mail interface on Sense is nice and clean. On some of these other apps, like K-9, it's not as nice looking. Also, I need features like auto-BCC all emails. And what I like about Sense Mail is I have two mail accounts, one Yahoo, one POP, and both homescreen icons actually tell me how many new mails there are. What's the mail app everyone is using when they switch away from Sense?

You can't. FS requires a Sense framework to run at all. If it were that easy, someone would've done it already.

I know what you mean about Sense. I have tried as well and always came back to Sense..
A replacement for Friendstream.. Here are a couple:
- Seesmic (Facebook and Twitter)
- Multipost ( but I think Facebook doesn't work)
- HootSuite
- Tweetdeck

Very clean, iOS looking style, and very fast etc, great mail

Yup - FS is hard to do without. However... check out APW widgets. The pro version has a friendstream widget which is a perfect replacement. The non-pro you have to have separate twitter and facebook. The calendar widget is also the best sense replacement I have found.
I'd stick with sense, but have a DZ so sense eats up too much RAM.
What I miss most in non-Sense roms is actually the camera. I tried and bought several other camera apps (360 camera, Zoom FX), but none seem as fast or polished as the Sense camera app. Especially with regard to focussing. It autofocusses on faces or otherwise just in the center, but you can always overrule it with tap-to-focus. I haven't found this in any other camera (yet?)
perhaps its just that I have become accustomed to that camera app.
for me, that is the only app that keeps dragging me back to sense roms.

Never ever Sense
everything else is better than sense.
but the best is an stock android so like google thought it should be.
I like some things about sense and have had my days where I missed it a little. But IMO after I used jelly bean its pure Google for me from now on. Thanks for the alternatives!

*Sigh* yes it is unique.... at least.
Did i miss it the last 18 months? .... This gonna be a hard decissi..... Nope!
Miui has nice style and good cam, too and runs like a kitten on crack :cyclops:
Even though,in my opinion, Miui is no competition to latest ics/jellybean vanilla feeling.
I like Sense for Calendar, Mail, and (mosttly) intuitive dialler. Maybe except mail, no replacements. Therefore, Sense ROMs.
Every time I try switching I keep coming back. The simple Email icons for my two email addresses, it shows the number of NEW messages. I tried Kaiten Mail and the ugly mail icon (looks like a fire hydrant), shows UNREAD messages. The problem with Unread messages is that for my POP email address, I read on my computer, or my phone. So my POP email on my phone is basically all Unread. So the icon shows me 99 Unread all the time. Useless. I just want to see NEW messages, and that's what my simple Sense 3.5 does. Sense is just better.
For Friendstream, if I click a tweet with a link to an article, the article opens up in Friendstream. With other apps like Android Pro Widgets, you have to click the link to the article and open up your browser. Grrrrrr.
