Ok, first off my Vibrant has flat out awful reception.. fluctuates randomly between 4 bars and 0 bars on 3g and sometimes cant get more than 1 bar 3g in the middle of an HSPA+ city(Memphis). Its not a bar display problem, sometimes my speedtest shows download speeds as low as 150kbps. If that wasnt bad enough it takes forever to switch between 3g and edge, by forever I mean sometimes a full 60 seconds+ and if Im running a data using program (Pandora for instance) it sometimes refuses to switch at all... Is this a known issue or is it just my phone?? I know my G1 did not have these issues.
Try doing a master reset on your device.
If the master reset dosen't work, you might reflash the full stock rom from the android dev section. There's alot of people that have been reporting substantial increases in their reception and connection speeds.
And if you think it takes a long time to switch b/t 3g and edge, you ought to try owning an evo for a month. It takes FOREVA to switch the 4g radio on and off, at least 3 min for me, takes about that long to turn it on after a reset too.
Just because you're in a HSPA+ city doesn't mean you're on the HSPA+ network.
If you're having problems with it aquiring the 3G network try a new sim.
The G1 has mediocre reception but it is aided by the fact that the antenna is at the top and not the bottom like all other phones.
Bump,
I am actually having this problem too, I have tried a factory reset, I also tried reflashing the T-Mobile stock fimware, but it has not helped. I have good 3g and edge reception where I live.
Oh yeah, I am using ATT on the vibrant.
When this happens (ie. not switching between network or slow switch time), you can trigger airplane mode and then undo it and the phone will pick up the right network or switch network faster. For example, if use 2g network is checked, it will enter Edge, etc.
I see exactly what you guys are talking about, locking it on 3G will fix this right up. I was driving down the freeway and I KNOW I was passing 3G towers, but the Vibrant stayed on EDGE for way too long. I locked it on 3G and I never lost the signal and it was 4 bars for nearly all of the trip so I know 3G was there, it just wasn't switching back fast enough.
Looking under the Samsung debug mode, the Vibrant will hold onto 3G until -115 Recieve power, which is basically -115dBm under the Android network menu. Of course over -101 RSCP, it will show 0 bars so it's hard to know when reception is acutally really bad.
It should show -0 bars at -113dBm, 1 bar until -101dBm, 2 bars until -89dBm, 3 bars until -79dBm, and 4 bars until -51dBm.
just disable the extra frequencies from service menu and it will be super quick.
I'll try that, at any rate it should be remedied by Samsung.

I'm pretty sure hes talking about only having it on 1900/1700 (combi bands)

That's an unintuitive user interface. sheesh.
Looking at Wikipedia, it looks like TMO uses 1700/2100 WCDMA and 850/1900 GSM (2G/EDGE). There's also a WCDMA 1900, but according to what I'm reading, TMO doesn't use WCDMA signaling on 1900, just GSM/EDGE.
To try it, go to the service menu using the steps for 3G locking and select 1700 only instead of WCDMA ALL. Then go back using menu/back (not the back button) twice and go to Combi Bands and select WCDMA 2100. That should enable just 1700/2100 WCDMA 3G service. Turning on PCS 1900 does seem to get me an EDGE connection. Enabling GSM 850 ONLY gives me emergency calls only, so it might be worth keeping on for 911 calls. 850 goes further so it might have service when the others don't.
I don't get 3G service in my basement, for example, so I would like to keep EDGE enabled. Hopefully enabling just the bands that I would use will help keep the search times down.

To really get a full re-flash, you need Odin right now. It should be possible to do it without Odin now, but I don't know if anyone has put together a stock ROM that way yet.
I didn't see any difference in speed/stability with the stock Odin flash, but others might have. It seems to depend on the network more than the local stuff.
Band IV 1700 includes 2100Mhz so you don't have to enable it. From what I can tell, no.. combi-bands doesn't do much for the slow 3G requisition. I'm just going to lock it on 3G when I'm not at home.

This didn't work for me. I would do this, and it would only work changing from 3G to EDGE. But, from when I would put it on use 3g, it would first change from airplane mode to EDGE, then take around 1 min to change to 3G.

How do I disable the frequencies? I can only seem to enable them.
I may be way off base here and if I am feel free to delete. But with my reading and experience it seems that you cannot rely on the signal bars with this modem. Every thing on my end works see sig for what I'm running. The signal bars continuously display low or now coverage but everything works voice, data(HSUPA) make sure you enable the WCDMA 850. The only problems I see with this modem is battery life with I am seeing inconsistencies with. I flashed at 100% with the phone on charge when flashing. I saw 25% loss in the first hour and a half. I then deleted battery stats and continued to loss % quickly till I got to 63% and it seems to be holding and running fairly well. I have been unplugged for 3 hrs with very light use, wifi on and am 59%. I am going to continue testing and do a full recondition tonight and will report back.

While I agree that your signal bars may be lying to you, simply ignoring the problem is not a fix. To find out what is really going on you should go into the service mode:
On the dial pad enter *#*#197328640#*#*
select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
select [1] BASIC INFORMATION
Now you'll see real info on your signal and what band your phone is using. The important lines are the third and last. The third tells you what band and if you're using WCDMA or GSM. The RSCP value in the last line is your real signal strength and should be between -50 and -113 with lower numbers being better.
In order to make this thread useful, one should post their kernel/modem/rom information and what kinds of signal they are seeing with various combinations in the same locations. Posting location info might be beneficial as well.
If you want to force your phone to a single, or multiple bands, enter service mode from above then:
[1] DEBUG SCREEN
[8] PHONE CONTROL
[7] NETWORK CONTROL
[2] BAND SELECTION
From there you can select the bands you want the phone to connect to. Just remember that to go backward through the service mode, you have to use the soft keys as the back capacitive key will exit the service mode.
I'll start some useful information:
ROM: Tayutama's 1.0.3
Modem: JPM
Kernel: Reorient 2.1
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Observations:
At home even after enabling the 850 WCDMA band in the service menu while on automatic the phone was still trying to connect to the 1900 WCDMA band with a very poor signal > -109. Eventually it would even give up on the WCDMA signal and fall back to GSM 1900. I could force it to use 850 WDCMA only and see a good signal, but then if I were to leave the 850 WCDMA coverage area I'd have no signal at all. I returned to Cognition 2.1.7 and while I'm at home, the phone uses the 850 WCDMA band and has a good signal -80 to -95
Ok so here is what it says
WCDMA 1900 band 2
RSCP:-96/-103 ( Bounces around)
I have 3 bars here at work. I will report what it is at home were I have no bars once I get home.
Edit: This is running Tayutama's JPM Froyo 1.0.3 w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel with voodoo 2.1 jpm modem.
correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't WCDMA for data and GSM for voice?
I've been unplugged for 9 hrs 41 min... of normal use (calls, texts, email, wordfeud, light browsing, and a couple of market updates)
I'm at 58%
The weird thing I'm having an issue with, with the JPM modem at least, is when I got to work this morning, my phone would only show it was connect on G, not 3G, just G. Speedtests were in the 40/60kbs range for up and down. I had the 850 band enabled. Flashed back to the JI6 modem, and I connect at H. Speedtests are still low, for the downstream at least, with 500-800 down, 1.7-2MBps up.
The other thing that I'm wondering about is this: I bought a Vibrant off of craigslist because it was hella cheap, and I heard in some areas you could get AT&T 3G with a Vibrant, and was thinking about switching to T-Mo. Anyways, at home, I would get 3-4MB/s download speeds with the unlocked Vibrant & and AT&T SIM. I haven't come close to that with any of my Captivate. At least I'm pretty sure that's what I was getting. I was going to wait to post something about this until I had a chance to test the Vibrant on the AT&T 3G at my house, but then I saw this post about the modem and with the problem I had with data once I got to work, I thought I'd post.
Oh yeah, and I'm currently on Tayutama's 1.03 Captivate ROM/xcaliburinhand's 2.1 w/ Voodoo & BLN.
edit - With JI6, connecting on WCDMA 850, RSCP ≈ -90. If I get a chance, I'll flash back to JPM and test again before I leave, but I doubt I will as I'll have to un-Voodoo before doing that.

WCDMA is for high speed data (3G, NextG, HSDPA/UPA, or UMTS) , and GSM can do both voice and data (Edge, 2G, slow ass, whatever you want to call it)

Go into the service menu and post your connection info. You are partially correct about using a T-Mobile phone on AT&T's network. T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 Mhz for its 3G bands while AT&T uses 850 and 1900. That you get any 3g signal at all is kind of surprising. If you use the service menu you should be able to lock the phone to any one of the available bands, then return to the basic information and see your signal strength and such. That should give you some insight as to what is happening. Do you get a good signal with any other rom/modem/kernel combinations?

Uh well, it was pretty widely reported that Vibrants could get on AT&T 3G, but that Captivates couldn't get on T-Mo 3G. I forget why that is atm, I thought it was that they could connect the older 3G towers, whatever frequency that is. But it isn't a fluke, several people have tested it. The Vibrant would get 3G at my house, but not at work, and I didn't want to keep T-Mo anyway, so for now I have to phone, although I'll probably be selling it soon.
Anyways, after flashing back to JPM & enabling the 850 band, I only connect to GSM 1900, RSSI -91.

I think you do. I would
Yes. You always, always, always, always, always, always need to disable Voodoo before flashing anything. JPK seems to be a winner for now. I actually never had any complaints with JI6, and who knows, I may go back to that if I have the same problems I had at work with JPK as I did with JPM.
So, to back to what I had mentioned earlier, I checked my Vibrant when I got home, and I was connecting on WCDMA Band 2 (1900MHz) and getting pretty awesome 3G speeds. I ran speedtest.net three times and averaged 2250kbps down, upstream had two good runs, both around 1300kbps, and one around 300. This was with modem T959UVJI2 and eugene's Froyo ROM.
edit edit - Interesting, I went into the band selection menu on the Vibrant and I could select the 850MHz band. I'm going to look into this a little more.
I have my custom jpm rom with the jpm modem and the 2.1 voodoo.
my phone was unplugged from 7 am till 8 pm with moderate use and was at 75%.
I do use juice defender but jpm has the best battery life I have seen
12 hours off charger @ 24%; moderate to heavy use w/ GPS navigation on way home, checking email throughout the day, texting, and web use.
using:
1.03 Tatuyama ROM w/ JPM Modem
Tatuyama 1.0.3
reorient 2.1
jpm modem
wcdma 1900 band 2
rscp -94/-105, ecio -7
2-3 bars shown
Battery life is at 25% after approx. 12hrs of work use.
Does the JPK modem enables HSUPA like JPM does?
Okay, so I've been trying to figure this out.
When I get the tablet, I was in Florida, and the 3G worked fine. No problems whatsoever. Now that I get to my home in the NYC area, the 3G doesn't work at all.
I've tested with 3 different AT&T sims and 2 different S7 tablets.
Here's what I found out.
Edge works. Edge will always work. The device has no problem initializing with the connection with the cell tower when GSM Only is set. After the device has initialized with the cell tower and has signal (Settings > Status > Mobile network state: Connected), you can switch to WCDMA (3G bands)
Data will work, but dialing out will not. This is because voice is a different channel than radio on 3G.
But if you remember, I said it worked in Florida. I believe this is because, in Florida, I probably didn't have HSPA (3.5G). I only had UMTS (3G). I have tried to disable hspa and try to get it to work on 3G only, but I haven't found a way.
Are there any AT&T users on 3G that would like to report their findings?

I replied to you a while ago over on androidtablets.net - but have you tried the Indonesian Froyo update? It includes a radio (baseband) update, which seems to have fixed all of the 3G problems I was having before.
i have choosen net work is GSM/WCDMA ( WCDMA preferred), untick use only 2G
full out APN, user name, password, but the symbol 3G not appear, just EDGE.
i'm using CM7 2.3
thank you guys.
The first thing I'd try is to change the baseband to Argentina\Claro -- it works better than the stock Bravo baseband in my experiences. Any of the 850/1900 basebands will work, but the Argentina one works best (for me, in Arkansas).
Then you can try to use WCDMA only -- tha (should) make use of the 1900mhz radio and has faster speeds -- but you can get crappy coverage when you're far from towers. I don't think you'll ever see 3g in the status bar (I never have, always been H+ or similar, better than 3g btw).
Unless you're on some weird ass carrier, you shouldn't have to mess with APN settings.
I think its the baseband. I sometimes use a baseband with edge only; a baseband with 850mhz and anything other than 1900 -- helpful at the end of the month when you're near the limit of your 3g data usage...USA T-Mobile for me.
The Bravo only supports 850/1900 basebands even though all the websites say its a Quad Band device (like the Defy). That's why that T-Mobile baseband (850\1700\2100) is a neat little trick to save from hitting overage charges . Edge is only on 850 in my experience which is why I'm thinking baseband.
if i stick the WCDMA only, there is no signal on my phone.
thank you. That's ok with EDGE.

Have you tried reflashing?
My new LG G2 D802 seems to only want to conect to GSM, if I have it set to any other setting like GSM/Wcda auto, or LTE etc it wont even connect to GSM let alone the other networks? To be clear i can use the phone set to GSM, but not when set to the other settings, just keeps searching for network
I am in New Zealand on Vodafone network which is
2G - 900/ 1800 MHz GSM, GPRS
3G - 900/ 2100 MHz UMTS, HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA+
4G - 1800 MHz LTE
so I think the phone should connect shouldnt it? I am in 3G/WCDA coverage (not in 4g currently to try)
Any ideas?
the phone is stock rom, rooted, Xposed etc, Kitkat 4.4.2
Thanks
Edit, I just clicked network operators and searched and it came up with Vodafone Gsm which i have selected. So i take it my phone cant see a 3g network?
I think I have solved it. I went into the hidden menu and changed the modem settings to my carriers frequency instead of auto. So fingers crossed. II havedone a reboot and it is still working too.
So I had 3g for the day or so and then its gone again, I tried my wifes sim card which is on a different network and seemed to work, so i will get a new sim card for myself and hopefully be ok. my current sim card works ok in her phone, it just struggles to find 3g in mine for some reason.
Got a new sim card now but it still struggle to find 3g maybe because I'm not in a main town centre but I should still have service here as I am in there coverage area and my wife gets coverage on her phone
Tried updating to lollipop but problemremains. It is disconnecting maybe because of poor 3g reception but then struggles to connect to 2g again. Only solution to have working phone is ro have it set on gsm only all the time. Not good
