Everything is working, other than the backlight.
I can see the menu very very slightly in bright light, so the screen is working fine.
I navigated to the light setting and its up on full.
But nada.
Thoughts on a fix?
I think you'll have to take it to a phone store or send it to HTC. Sounds very broken

Dropped my phone in the toilet, fished it out and brought it back from the dead-again. After I let it dry out for a day or two, everything worked, except the red and green buttons were constantly lit up. That was when the screen was completely backlit. Now the screen won't light up at all, and I know it's not the backlight settings. Is this fixable at all?
Same problem. Replaced broken LCD with new one. First it only gave white light. Now it works fine, only no backlight. Who knows a solution?

How did you fix it?
I published the HTC Accelerometer SDK a while ago, and have been spending some time off and on trying to find out how to get access to the Nav API. No luck there yet, but I did figure out how to access the light sensor.
The updated API and source is available at:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/07/htc-light-sensor-sdk.html
Koush
can you give us compiled exe?
where are the lightsensor? is it the front/back cam?
how often will auto light adjust update?
alltime? once per power on switch? once per minute?
when the autolight is not set, and it will be done by frontcam, we can safe cams energy, by switching off automatic backlighht adjust. cameras are needing a lot of power.
can anybody confirm that?
WooooWWW this keeps getting better!
Thanks HTC
Please.. Somebody will make a "really" adjustable light settings util with this SDK.. I want to set min backlit level to lower for totaly dark enviroments... because default one is too much than required..
Sorry for my poor English..
Sure, I'll make a utility to do that. Give me a bit though, I'm coding up the Nav sensor SDK right now.
feature request
disable light sensor when call is in progress.
enable light sensor back after call was terminated.
sensor option
Thank you,
I have noticed on the new Bang & Ollefson and another new highend phone [not iphone] they are set so that when the display is away from the air is is visable...against ear off......thus...
when you are looking at the display it is visable
when phone is covered by ear...display is off
take phone away from ear....display comes back on
back to ear display goes off....etc...
This is a fantastic feature and has a wow factor as a sales tool.

Nice work Koush - and I completely agree with the above quote. I'm surprised HTC didn't have this already included, having to press a button to wake the display is kind of stupid since it gets turned off by the light sensor

Light sensor is just left of the front face phone speaker (inside the speaker recess).

This happens with the iPhone too.
It's exactly what we need to make the Diamond much better. I don't want the backlight on during a call as its a waste of battery - but I hate having to push the power button during a call if I need to enter a number or change to speakerphone etc.
How could HTC have missed out such a simple feature? Hopefully this is something that can easily be coded in? Fingers crossed

Any news here? I'd appreciate a tool or tweak to define minimal backlight level for myself because of the same reason.
somebody got ahead regarding the customization of automatic backlight changing with this api?
regards
this would be great if someone with programming skills looked into it!!! ie not me!
You don't have to press power button while on call to enable the backlight. Pressing the middle button (circle) will enable backlight and wont do anything with the call

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable the orange led by the earpiece and/or physical button lights on the bottom of the phone when charging? The lights keep my wife up at night...
Currently running fresh 2.0d by the way.

Not to sound like a jackass, can't you just turn the phone over so the light is facing down?

Glass Desk? (Yes I have this problem if I sleep on one side of the bed lol).
It really would be nice to have a bit more control over the LED though.

yes, but that doesn't disable the lights, so its not an answer to the question, but possibly the only workaround if not possible. i don't have a "naked" phone so i'm also not sure if without a case the trackball wouldn't be in the way of facing it down
i'm interested in this too as i'd rather have my phone face up at night vs. down so that instaed of having to grab my phone to disable an alarm, i can just reach over and swipe it down or snooze...
R
I run a clock on the phone at night. I got desperate enough last night to carve "endcaps" out off styrofoam to cover the lights...not very elegant, but works for now I suppose.

He said the lights keep his wife up, so I would think it is a solution since the light would be facing downwards and thus be much less visible.
I was going to look in to this since I already know how to control the leds via command line... but I would rather not re-invent the wheel.
Search the market for leds hack (put the s in leds or it won't find it. I believe it's also a protected app so make sure you're on a rom that shows it). Run it, select Nexus 1. Done.
The trackball led stays on at first but just hit the power button and it turns off. I know it says it only works for droid and nexus1 but I just tested it for you.

I have been using this for a while with bedside pro. the track ball does stay on. I have not been able to figure out how to turn it off.

On my phone it turns off and stays off as soon as I put the phone to sleep. Well anyways I just spoke to the developer and let him know what's up with it and he's going to look in to disabling the trackball. I offered my assistance if he needs any help tracking it down on our phones.

I sent the dev of that app I was talking about exactly what he needs to disable our trackball. He said he should be able to get it done tonight. I'll let you guys know. I have 0 use for this app but I just figured his was so close that I'd help the last little bit.

I put my phone on a dock, and it serves as my alarm clock. I like to be able to see what time it is, so turning phone down is not an option. Right now I slide the top of an old phone holster over the top inch or 2 of the phone just to block the LED.

Wow, I have to say I envy you guys who get to sleep in such dark rooms.
For the past 20 years of so I've been so close to bright street lights that even with heavy curtains something as dim as the LEDs on a phone isn't even noticable (much less be enough of a bother to keep me awake...).
It's one of the things I absolutely love about camping, getting to sleep in actual darkness.
I know I'm not offering any solutions here, just saying that if you can even notice the LEDs on the phone at night, be thankful that you don't have much light pollution to deal with.

Haha, I have electrical tape over all my LED's on computers etc in my room. I have two sets of blinds, and my area is just dark to begin with.
Darkness > *
The phone I just turn upside down though so it's never been an issue.
Luckily for me my wife hasn't said anything about my Hero keeping her up. But then again, I don't charge it while I sleep. My old phone had an LED all the way across the top of the phone and blinked every 15 seconds. I had to turn that one upside down or cover it with clothes.

I take it back, when plugged into my computer and set to "charge only" there are no lights, but when plugged into the AC adapter, the trackball still lights up...in case anyone was wondering
Hello.
The other day my phone suffered a little water damage. Not submerged in water or anything, but a couple drops found their way into the phone. The phone was turning off/on and functioning, but the display was black. I could feel buttons being pressed and stuff...the screen just wasn't illuminated. Well, I left it alone for a while, and now the screen works to a degree.
It's functioning perfectly, except it can't go above 40% brightness or the phone's screen goes black. As soon as I move the slider at or below 40%, the screen works perfectly again.
Obviously whatever illuminates the screen is damaged to some degree. The same thing happens when using apps like Lux...so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem now. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what exactly could be damaged so I can fix it myself, or have anything to try before taking it apart again.
Thanks!

Did You ever get to the bottom of this?
Having the same exact problem?
So this morning my phone screen just died. Didnt drop it or anything but suddenly it stopped working. The phone turns on (can hear the sound and see the LED lights light up). The screen is also still responsive because the phone vibrates on touch but its just completely black.
Help.
may be the flex cable connecting the display is loose?
