Hello folks,
I have my contacts uploaded to Gmail contacts, and a ton of them also include birthday information.
Unfortunately, it seems that the sync to the "Persons" app on the HTC Hero doesn't sync over that piece of info? Or am I missing something somewhere?

It did not do it for me. I had to create Google Calendar events for my contacts to get the birthday information synched.
In Google Mail, under "Other Calendars", there is a "Contact's Birthdays" calendar you can subscribe to.

Google Calendar, yes, of course.
BTW, Android 2.x will sync the birthday field in your contacts.
ok, we can have the calendar but not the sync in the address book.
if android 2.x can sync, we can not be sure that relative htc-sense addressbook upgrade does it...
...and I think that if you have saved some date on the phone is not sure that you can keep it during the update, expecially if you have a modaco or another mod...
does anyone know of a widget or app that will allow me to view upcoming or all contact birthdays ?

when you sync your phone with fb it'll sync the birthdays to your calendar as well so you'll able to see the birthdays of your fb contacts.

how exactly? i synced all my phone contacts to their respective fb account but their birthdays wont show in the calendar, i even tried syncing with outlook and back to the phone....

On my G1 I used to use one called ebobirthday which was quite good. On the Desire, instead I have a slightly nicer solution - but only slightly nicer, because for some reason you can't seem to get at the synced FB dates
Sarch facebook apps for swissmenuo and add that app - it'll give you feerds for your FB events and contact birthdays. You can then add the ICS feed to your Google Calendar and use any of the calendar widgets to view just that calendar, or include it with your standard calendars . . . .

Settings|Calendars|Browse interesting calendars|More|Contacts' birthdays and events<--subscribe ^^

unfortunately, i was hoping to steer clear of having data stored in the cloud. all of the birthdays are stored right there on the phone, all i want to do is have an app that displays upcoming birthdays in a widget.
used ebobirthday..works like a charm..it gets my fb friends birthday n integrated it into my HTC calendar...can even set alarm lol...

ebobirthday uses its own database to store birthdays doesn't it ? i was hoping to avoid this but it's looking like i'm going to have to cave in ...
after you set it to find all your contact birthday, there is an option to export the birthday into a csv file which i think u can save it and apply it to your google calendar or outlook or anything, i saved it but didnt try it, worried that it might mess up my calendar since i have ebobirthday on...hehe, you can try it and let us know the result

I used "birthday exporter" application on facebook, when you enter the application click "get your iCal file" then go to your google calendar and add the calendar (click on add, then "import calendar" and choose your downloaded iCal file) then sync from your phone to your google calendar.

thanks for the info, from the reviews, i see that some ppl says that it doesnt sync with android when there is no year added....

I am already synching emails with gmail in push and was wondering if it's possible to also sync contacts (and calendar) BUT ONLY FROM PHONE TO GMAIL: I use primarly my phone as source and would like to sync with gmail mainly as an additional backup.

thanks, but this I already know: was wondering if it's possible to sync only one way the contacts, from phone to gmail... cannot find any options for this
As u can see on screenshots in step 11 there is such possibility also there is an option to not to overwrite phone data when there is conflict

anyway, i have tried, and it made a total mess: duplicated contacts, contacts sorted by surname, name instead of name, surname, inconsistent number of contacts between phone and gmail...
Same problem here.
I just want to use gmail as as backup for my contacts, calendar... but every time I sync... I end up with duplicated contacts and calender entries .
Does anyone have a solution to sync only from phone 2 gmail?

I would like to upload ( & eventually sync. ) the contacts to GMail contacts.
I´m afraid to add GMail to automatic synchro, cause as far as I understand, it will double my contacts ?!

Ok after uploading do this:
Go to gmail and view your contacts. pres the "more actions" button above your contacts and choose "find & merge duplicates" this will merge the duplicates. i think this is what you mean.

Main question is, how to upload to GMail ?
Where are they now? on the phone? on the SIM card? exported on a CSV file?

Thanks for your response. I have the similar question. So can you please explain it clearly to us:
* the contact sync will simply add the contact of my phone to Gmail contact list? or the 2 contact lists will emerge, then we can get a complete contact list on the phone and gmail?
* if I have the duplicated contacts on my phone, how to merge them?

Kind of have the same question. My contacts are now on the phone and the SIM card. After using "sync now" in the settings, I got my gmail contacts onto my phone, but not the phone contacts into gmail.
Is there some trick to do this?
I finally updated GMail using a .csv backup made by "Backup Contacts" found on market.
But I still wonder how to also synch. them ?

What I did in your case, was:
First to backup all my phone contacts to outlook in my computer.
There I exported the contacts to a .csv file (like ChefChaudart said). With that file I imported the contacts to my gmail account. Meaning I have all my contacts (the ones I had in the phone and the ones I already had in gmail) all together in the email account.
Last I deleted the contacts in my phone, and syncronised with my gmail account. Now having all the contacts both in the phone and in gmail account.
It's not a fast way to do it, but I didn't found another way.

You mean that if you do not delete the contacts on your phone at last step, everything will be duplicated ?
Yes - Once you have all your contacts on Gmail you don't need them on your phone.. it will sync to your phone from Gmail..
in the phone go to accounts and sync tick background data, and auto sync... job done.

And maybe some of your contacts could merge. Meaning that if you had two contacts with the same name, one in the phone and the other in the email account, they could merge under the same name.
As im_iceman says, one you have them in your gmail account you don't need them on the phone, just sync and you'll have them all back in the phone, well organized, not duplicated nor merged.

What I would do, and I actually did:
All contacts in Phone list ====> to Outlook (in your case Thunderbird) =====> now to gmail account *====> and now synchronize from gmail to the phone.
* When I had all contacts gathered in one place (gmail account) I deleted them from the phone.

Once you make sure you have all of your contacts in gmail, I would recomend you to delete them from the phone so after you synchronize with gmail you won't get your contacts duplicated, meaning that in your phone you would have every contact two times.
For obvious reasons, just in case both my phone AND gmail account fail at the same time or any other problem, I keep a backup of all my contacts in outlook.

How to import facebook contacts to gmail ??
I m interested in birthdays... On my widget only birthdays from gmail account is shown so is there a way to import birthdays from facebook along with the contacts ???

Actually I wasn't quite right... you can sync contacts.. you just can't sync their birthday info and such like..
I'm not familiar with Thunderbird but.. can't you use Google as your primary source.. which syncs to your phone.. and the sync Thunderbird with either the live google account, or with the phone? Then you'll have everything you need..

I'm new around here, so I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
Can anyone tell me how I can get my contacts birthdays to appear on my phone calendar. In calendar settings I have the contacts birthdays option checked to display. When syncing my calendar with my google account, everything appears fine on my laptop when looking at Google calendar. I was temporary able to fix this issue by clearing my calendar and calendar storage data in my apps settings with the birthdays appearing on my calendar after I had done that. However, after adding a few more birthdays and trying the same method, not all the birthdays appear on my calendar that I have recently added. If I check on my laptop again they are all displayed there correctly.
Any ideas?

Make sure both the "display" and "synch" settings for the birthday calendar are checked in the Calendar app's settings on your Nexus.

Do your contacts birthdays show in the calendar or have you not tried?

No I just have one account but I use a hotmail address for my Google account. If I add a birthday to my contact, it will show up on the online calendar fine but wont display on my phone calendar. The only other thing I can think of is if my simple calendar widget maybe interfering?
